Who Knew I’d Be Broken-hearted!

  Darlene's background

I commenced theological studies in the 1980’s and subsequently, added other courses and another diploma. It was however, in the late 80’s, that I assumed there was great promise in the Church, for women, and indeed, for all of the laity. In fact, the "book of the time" for me, was Leonard Doohans’ work, called The Lay-Centred Church. I was so excited with his book, that I telephoned him, at his home in California.

Alas, it is 2014, and my elation, has fizzled. Oh yes, there is the presence of hope and joy with Pope Francis, but, with the polarization of the Church into pre-Vatican II and post-Vatican II spirituality and theology, it is so very sad and frustrating.

Here I am, not that far from 60 years of life, and I wonder if this new wine, that the Lord created me as, will ever find a place of peace and joy, in the Church, again!

No doubt, my story is not unique. While the "war" rages between pre-Vatican II and post-Vatican II, how much new wine, is just left, to run, on the ground?

While I know, that the Lord’s Word does not return to Him empty, and that we are always led by Christ in triumphal procession, the time spent, waiting for an opportunity, to supply the new wine, is a heart-breaking time.

A lesson from the Wedding at Cana would be, that when the old wine is done, the bridegroom, being the eternal new wine, will ensure, that the Church receives and drinks of new Vatican II wine! And when that comes to pass, I will no longer be heart-broken.
