Tues Feb 19

Yesterday when I went to McDonald's for morning green tea, a lady cleaner asked me to buy some food for a 60 year old local Chinese woman who has been sleeping at the cafe for some time now. Turns out the woman is one of many people at this time of year in HK who can no longer afford their rent (... LNY is a traditional time for putting up rents ... ) and are "out on the street". I asked the woman if she would like to see the Mercy Centre on Cheung Chau Island which has free accommodation for homeless people. The woman agreed so I phoned Mercy Centre manager Lucia who then arranged to meet the woman at Cheung Chau ferry pier. I gave the woman a little money for travel. Mid-afternoon Lucia let me know that the woman had arrived and would stay at the Mercy Centre overnight ... and maybe longer if she likes it ... and could work at a vegetable stall which Lucia now runs with the aim of providing employment for needy people. God bless everyone in this story ... not least McD's for compassionately allowing homeless people to stay overnight.

2 Samuel 10-11: The Ammonites went to war with the Israelites, but David led the Israelites to victory. During a further war with the Ammonites, David stayed in Jerusalem and did not go to the battle. While in Jerusalem, he made love to Bathsheba the wife of Uriah who conceived and sent word to David, "I am with child." David recalled Uriah to Jerusalem and tried to get him to sleep with his wife. But Uriah loyally observed the custom of the time and refrained from marital relations since he was a soldier at war. David then arranged for Uriah to be killed in battle by having him stationed in a defenceless position. After a time of mourning for Uriah, Bathsheba became David's wife and bore him a son. The Lord was displeased with David.
Dear God, help us not to displease you

My recording of this reading

Psalms 35-37: O Lord, please save me from people who slander me, you who rescue the weak from the strong, you whose love is so precious, you in whose light we see light. We believe that if we find our delight in you, you will grant our heart's desire. And so we commit our lives to you, confident you will help us in time of trouble.
Lord, please deepen our trust in you, especially in time of trouble

Hebrews 13.8-21: Jesus Christ is the same today as he was yesterday and as he will be for ever. Do not let yourselves be led astray by strange doctrines that teach a different Jesus. Jesus died outside the city. Let us go to him and share his rejection. Our life in this world is a temporary arrangement, like a tent. We look for a permanent home in the life to come. Keep doing good works and sharing your resources
God of peace, you brought  Jesus back from the dead to be our great Shepherd and Priest. Make me ready to do your will in any kind of good action

Listen

Mark 11.15-19: When Jesus arrived in Jerusalem, he went to the Temple. In the Temple there were money changers and people selling pigeons. Jesus tipped over their tables and drove them out of the Temple. He said to them "My house is a house of prayer for all the peoples of the world, but you have turned it into a place for robbery".
Jesus, protect  all places of prayer from corruption

Well, must be the season for such encouraging messages, because yesterday I received another one ... this time from a man in Australia who was a student of mine in the early 1980's and is now a school principal! God bless both these former students and their families! And see , below!

2 Samuel 8-9: Wherever David went, the Lord gave him success and victory. David showed kindness to Saul's family
Meribbaal, son of Jonathan and grandson of Saul was crippled in both feet. David restored Saul's property to Meribbaal and arranged for Meribbaal to eat at the royal table each day.

Lord, help us show kindness to people who treat us badly

My recording of this reading

Psalm 34: I will bless the Lord at all times, his praise always on my lips. In the Lord my soul shall make its boast, the humble shall hear and be glad. Glorify the Lord with me, together let us praise his name. I sought the Lord and he answered me. From all my terrors he set me free. The angel of the Lord is encamped around those who revere the Lord, to rescue them. Taste and see that the Lord is good. They are happy who seek refuge in him. The Lord is close to the broken-hearted. Those whose spirits are crushed he will save.
Lord, by our Bible reading and prayer, may we taste and see your goodness each day

Listen

Hebrews 12-13: Your ancestors were at Mount Sinai when God spoke to Moses. But you already have one foot in the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, where millions of angels gather in praise. So, continue to live a life of love and hospitality. Keep in mind those who are in prison, as though you were in prison with them. Keep your marriage undefiled. Avoid greed. Be content with what you have.
Jesus, help me remember heaven....and people in prison

Listen

Mark 11.1-11: Jesus sat on a donkey colt for the trip down the hill from the Mount of Olives into the city of Jerusalem. Big crowds accompanied Jesus down the hill. People spread their clothes on the road as a sign of honor. People cut branches from the trees and waved them singing "Hosanna to the Son of David. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.  Hosanna in the highest!"
Jesus, may you be warmly welcomed by every place and every person in the world

On this day in 1826 Pope Leo XII approved the Constitutions and Rules of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate. For this 193rd Anniversary, OMI Superior General Fr Louis Lougen has issued a special letter, on the topic of sexual abuse of minors - here

Yesterday I received these moving words from someone who was in this photo in 2003!:
Dear Father John, I am ...... I don't know whether you still remember me, the little girl who attended your English class in Zhaoqing years ago. I am currently in the U.S. pursuing my Ph.D. degree. It has been 16 years since we met! I tried to find your contact for years until I saw your stories from Google and decided to send an email. I am writing this letter to tell you I am really grateful for what you taught me when I was a kid. I want to say thank you for your devotion and dedication which benefitted us a lot. I just want to tell you I wish you all good and send my mom's best wishes to you. We are all grateful for what you have done for the kids!

c.f. readings for Sunday 6

Jeremiah 17.5-8: The Lord says this: "A curse on people who put their trust in humans, who rely on things of flesh, whose  hearts turn from the Lord. They are like dry scrub in the wastelands: if good comes, they have no eyes for it, they settle in the parched places of the wilderness, a salt land, uninhabited. A blessing on people who put their trust in the Lord, with the Lord for their hope. They are like a tree by the waterside that thrusts its roots to the stream: when the heat comes it feels no alarm, its foliage stays green; it has no worries in a year of drought, and never ceases to bear fruit."

Psalm 1: Happy the person who avoids evil and evil entertainment. Happy the person who reads and meditates on God's words. Such a person is like a tree planted beside a river, getting plenty of nourishment, bearing plenty of fruit. Such a person is on the Way of Life. People who do evil are on the Way of Death
Dear Lord, please help me do good and avoid evil

Luke 6.20-26: Jesus said to his disciples "Blessed are you who are poor: yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are you who are hungry: you shall be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now: you shall be happy. Blessed are you when people hate you because of me: your reward will be great in heaven. But alas for you who are rich: your consolation is only in this world. Alas for you who have plenty to eat: you shall go hungry. Alas for you who laugh now: you shall mourn and weep".
Jesus, please help me to give more time and importance to the things that really matter

Reflection on the above readings:  On the one hand a curse, the Way of Death. On the other hand a blessing, the Way of Life. Then in the afternoon, since I was one of the founding directors, I went to the Annual General Meeting of Aitece, a wonderful organisation which has sent more than 400 teachers to China over the past 30 years. Aitece this year has 19 teachers in China and would like to see that number grow. Website has details

2 Samuel 7: After David settled into his palace and the land enjoyed peace, David thought about building a temple for the Lord.
Then through the prophet Nathan the Lord told David: "I will establish your dynasty for ever. But it will be your son, not yourself, who will build a temple for me." David praised God: "Who am I, Lord, and what is my House, that you have helped me so much and promised me so much?
May my House continue in your presence for ever. May you bless my House forever."
Dear God, please bless everyone in my family tree, past, present and future

My recording of this reading

Psalm 33: Ring out your joy to the Lord, all good people, for praise is fitting for loyal hearts. For the Lord loves justice and right; he fills the earth with his love. By his word the heavens were made, he spoke and the universe came into being. They are happy, whose God is the Lord, he is the source of all true joy. May your love be upon us, O Lord, since we place all our trust in you.
Lord, we trust in your precious love

Hebrews 11.1 - 12.15: Only faith can keep us going. Only faith helped Abraham and other famous people in the Scriptures to keep going. So many of them were weak people who were given strength by God, to be brave when life became difficult. With so many witnesses in a great cloud all around us, we too should keep running in the race we have started. We should get rid of everything that slows us down. Keep focusing on Jesus. He is running beside us. His example going to the cross gives us courage. Try to live at peace with everyone. Don't let any seed of bitterness begin to grown and make trouble. This can poison a whole community
Jesus, help me remember your presence in my heart

Mark 10.46-52: As  Jesus was leaving Jericho on his way to Jerusalem, many people followed him along the road. Sitting by the road was a man who had become blind. His name was Bartimaeus ("son of Timaeus"). When he heard that Jesus was going past, he called out "Son of David, have pity on me". Some people tried to stop him from calling out, but he shouted even more loudly "Son of David, have pity on me". Jesus stopped and said to him "What do you want me to do for you?" He replied "Lord, let me see again". Jesus said to him "Go, your faith has saved you". Immediately his sight returned, and he followed Jesus along the road.
Jesus, please heal my blind friend (.. name ..)

Reflection on the above readings: Especially when anyone or anything tries to hinder us from approaching Jesus we must, like Bartimaeus, focus on Jesus (Hebrews)

Fri Feb 15

I spent most of yesterday at Lo Wu women's prison .... a "super prison" type building where new staff take quite a while to remember how to get from A to B. At one stage yesterday I thought to myself that I would like to see the building turned into a university! At the start of my day as I spent much time at the main entrance desk handing in items for prisoners I had a chat with two other priests and a sister who were there to visit prisoners in the visit rooms, on a "one-to-one" basis through glass with a phone. Then I headed for several workrooms to see many people. Happiest person I met during the day was a lady from Africa who is due to be released in 35 days after 6 years in prison. As usual I met several women who really are innocent, not guilty, "set up" ... asking for help. Jesus please help these women!

2 Samuel 6: David and 30,000 men went to Baalah (Kiriath-jearim) to bring the Sacred Chest to Jerusalem. David and the people danced before the Sacred Chest and sang loudly to the accompaniment of much music. After the Sacred Chest entered Jerusalem David blessed the people in the name of the Lord.
Dear God, please help us praise you with joy, as David did

My recording of this reading

Psalm 32: Happy is the person whose sin is forgiven. For a while I refused to ask for forgiveness, and my body paid the penalty. But then I said "Lord, forgive me" and my spirit and body revived.
Lord, when I do wrong, please give me the grace to say sorry and ask forgiveness

Hebrews 10.32-39: Remember all the suffering you experienced after you became  Christians - the insults and violence, the loss of your possessions. Don't give up now. Keep going in your Christian life. You and I are not the sort of people who give up. We are the sort of people who stay faithful until our souls are saved.
Jesus, help me keep going, despite difficulties

Mark 10.35-45: The brothers James and John were two of Jesus' disciples. One day their mother said to Jesus "When you become king, allow my sons to sit at your right and left". Jesus said to his cousins James and John "Only my Father in heaven can allocate seats on my right and left". The 10 other disciples were angry at James and John for seeking honor.  So Jesus said to them all  "In most places, people in power like to dominate and control others. But this is not to be your way of exercising authority. You must exercise authority by serving others, not dominating them, just as I came not to be served, but to serve, and to give my life as a ransom for the world".
Jesus, please help me want to help and serve other people, not dominate and control them

Valentine's Day: There are so many bad things happening - and they get so much publicity - so it's good to let Valentine's Day remind us that "love makes the world go round" .... only love gives meaning to our lives .... when we do something good/loving we feel good .... when we do something bad/unloving we feel bad. The key to improving things for ourselves or our group or our world is ... more love/compassion/care towards others, especially people in need. As in the old song "What the World Needs Now" - at this simple but beautiful YouTube, with lyrics. And Valentine's Day unique opportunity for Church (let's reclaim St Valentine's Day!)

Psalm 31: Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I am in distress. My eyes are full of tears, my heart full of sorrow. Everyone makes fun of me. My friends don't want to know me. Hebrews 10.21-25: Jesus is the supreme High Priest of the whole house of God. As we enter that house, let us have sincere hearts that are filled with faith and hope. Jesus, may my life encourage others to do good

Mark 10.28-30: On behalf of all the disciples, Peter asked Jesus "What about us?  We have left everything to follow you." Jesus replied "You will be leaders in the church on earth. 2 Samuel 1-3: When David heard that Saul and Jonathan had died, David was very sad. David was then anointed as king over the house of Judah, but Ishbaal became king of the rest of Israel. War broke out between the House of David (Judah) and the House of Saul (Israel). Gradually the House of David grew stronger and the House of Saul grew weaker.
Dear God, please give peace to all nations suffering from civil war

My recording of this reading

Psalms 29-30: The Lord gives us strength, the Lord blesses us with peace. Thank you, Lord, for so often helping and healing me. I cried to you when sickness surrounded me, and you healed me. You changed my mourning into dancing. So I will thank you always.
Thank you, Lord, for all the times you have healed me

Hebrews 8-9: Jesus' priesthood is part of the new covenant predicted in the Scriptures: "See, the days are coming - it is the Lord who speaks - when I will establish a new covenant with the House of Israel". Jesus has come as High Priest of all the blessings that were predicted would be part of the new covenant. He has offered not the blood of animals like priests of the old covenant, but his own blood, by which he won our redemption. His blood can purify our inner self from dead actions, to help us in our life of dedication to the living God.
Jesus, by your precious blood, purify my heart and protect me

Mark 10.17-27: A young man asked Jesus "Master, what do I have to do to get to Heaven?" Jesus replied "Keep the commandments: do not kill; do not commit adultery; honor your father and mother; care for others as much as you care about yourself". The young man said "I have kept all these commandments. What else do I need to do?" Jesus said "If you want to do something really special with your life, go and sell all your possessions, give the money to the poor, then come and follow me as one of my disciples". When the young man heard these words he went away sad, because he was very rich. Jesus then said to his disciples "It is hard for a rich person to get to Heaven".
Jesus, please don't let riches endanger my eternal life
