Tues March 5

As I spent 8 hours at Lo Wu women's prison yesterday I was close to tears a couple of times as I heard some of the women's stories. HK's justice system is one of the best in the world, but it's not perfect, and it has made some glaring mistakes that have caused innocent women to spend long years behind bars. In particular the treatment of women from Mainland China could well be the subject of a judicial inquiry.

Most informative documentary about Haiti (might upset US and French viewers). Massacre tales of natives happened all over the world, including Australia: The massacres of Aboriginal people (Aboriginal population decreased by about 500,000 in one century)

My article in today's Ming Pao newspaper has the topic: Do HK police really need water cannons? It is on Ming Pao website - click "Australian in HK". Text without recording

Readings are from Simple Bible

1 Kings 11: Solomon had 700 wives and 300 concubines. Many of these women were foreigners. As Solomon grew old, his foreign women swayed his heart to allow the worship of foreign idols. This displeased the Lord and led to the breakup of Solomon's kingdom. Solomon was king for 40 years and then died.
Dear God, please protect leaders from corruption

My recording of this reading

Psalms 66-68:
O God, be gracious and bless us and let your face shine its light upon us. Let all the peoples praise you, O God.
Let all the peoples praise you
. O sing to the Lord, make music to his name. Rejoice in the Lord, exult at his presence. Father of the orphan, defender of the widow, God provides a shelter for the homeless. God gives his people strength.

May all the peoples of the earth know you and praise you, O God

Listen

Jude: From Jude, servant of Jesus Christ and brother of James, to those who are dear to God the Father and kept safe, wishing you mercy and peace and love. I write with urgency to appeal to you: stand up for the faith that has been entrusted to us. Some false teachers have infiltrated our ranks. They reject the teaching of our Master and Lord, Jesus Christ. They say "anything goes" in the area of morality. Such teaching, such people, must be opposed. Be kind to such people, but with great caution. To God who saves us through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory and all honor, now and forever
Jesus, please protect your church from false teachers

Listen

Mark 15.16-20: After the Roman soldiers scourged Jesus, they made fun of him. They put a purple cloak on him. They made a crown out of thorns and put it on his head. They knelt in front of him and mocked him saying "Hail, king of the Jews".  They hit his head with a reed, and spat on him. When they had finished making fun of him, they dressed him in his own clothes and led him away to crucify him.
Jesus, please don't let me hurt other people by making fun of them

Listen

Reflection on the above readings: During China's Cultural Revolution, children were encouraged to punish their parents and teachers for any "counter-revolutionary ideas". It's hard to imagine how a child could punish good parents/teachers. How distraught those parents/teachers must have felt. Yet how much more intense was the distress of Jesus as he was tortured by humans who had life through him.

In some countries (.. Africa, South America, Philippines ... ) relatives and friends have to take food to prisoners since the prison food can hardly be called "meals". But in HK the prison food is so good that many prisoners, especially overseas prisoners, put on weight .... which is what I noticed at Lo Wu women's prison yesterday. As one Big Mama from African said yesterday "We don't keep fit. We keep fat"!

1 Kings 10: Solomon's wealth continued to grow. He acquired a fleet of ships for trading. He also had a huge force of chariots and horses. The queen of Sheba heard about Solomon's wisdom and came to visit him. Solomon answered all her questions. None of her questions was too difficult for him.
Dear Lord, please give wisdom to all world leaders

My recording of this reading

Psalms 61-50: O God, hear my cry, you who are my refuge and help. In you alone is my soul at rest. My help comes from you. Take refuge in God, everyone in trouble. Trust him at all times. O God, you are my God, for you I long. My body and soul thirst for you like a dry, weary land without water. Your love is better than life, my lips will speak your praise. On my bed I remember you. On you I muse through the night. You are the Creator of the world. You care for the earth, you give it water. To you our praise is due, wherever we are on earth.
Lord, my soul clings to you. Your right hand holds me fast

3 John: From the Elder to my dear friend Gaius. People have told me of your faithfulness to the truth. It is always a great joy for me when I hear that my children are living according to the truth. Thank you for your hospitality to believers who travel to spread the Good News. Such people deserve whatever support we can give them
Jesus, please bless people who travel to spread the Good News

Mark 15.1-15: Early in the morning, the religious leaders had Jesus bound with ropes. They took him to Pilate, the Roman governor. The leaders accused Jesus of many crimes. To the governor's amazement, Jesus remained silent. The leaders persuaded the crowd to demand the execution of Jesus. They called out to Pilate "Crucify him". Pilate asked "Why? What has he done wrong?" The crowd shouted all the louder "Crucify him. Crucify him". Giving in to the crowd, Pilate then ordered Jesus to be scourged and crucified.
Jesus, help people who are condemned to death

Listen

Reflection on the above readings: Jesus was put on the Cross around 9am. It would have taken about an hour to get to Calvary from Pilate's place. And he was with Pilate for at least an hour (... Barabbas .... scourging .... ). So the scene in today's Gospel was around 7am. Not long after dawn. Where did a crowd come from at that hour? "Rent-a-crowd"?

Sun March 3

Yesterday afternoon after I finished the monthly Mass at Queen Elizabeth Hospital for volunteers, patients and for families of recently deceased patients, I visited the Custodial ward and also some open wards. In one open ward I met two former inmates from Hei Ling Chau drug treatment centre: one was a patient and the other was visiting his very ill father. Reminding me I used to go to Hei Ling Chau Island every week, but so far this year have not been even once. Hope I can go before Easter.

c.f. readings for Sunday 8

Sirach 25-28: Happy the husband of a really good wife. A good wife is the joy of her husband. Do not praise a person before they have spoken. A person's speech reveals what sort of person is speaking. Among stupid people look for an opportunity to leave, but among thoughtful people take your time. Sarcasm and abuse are the mark of an arrogant person. Resentment and anger are bad for everyone. Forgive others if they have offended you. Then when you pray, your own sins will be forgiven. Avoid quarrelling and losing your temper. Do not let your mouth speak scandal.
Lord, please give me the wisdom to control my speech

My recording of this reading

Psalm 92: It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to make music to your name, O Most High, to proclaim your love in the morning, and your truth right through the night. Your deeds, O Lord, have made me glad. For the work of your hands, I shout with joy. To me you give the wild ox's strength. You anoint me with the purest oil. May we love and praise you right through our lives, right till the end of our days. May we keep on proclaiming your goodness, proclaiming that in you, our rock, there is only goodness.
Lord, it is right and fitting to love and praise you

Listen

1 Corinthians 15.54-58: When this mortal nature has put on immortality, then the words of Scripture will come true: "Death has been defeated. Death, where is your victory? Death, where is your sting?" Never give up, dear friends, never admit defeat. Keep on working at the Lord's work always. Know that, in the Lord, no work is in vain.
Jesus, please give me more faith  to "keep going"

Listen

Luke 6.41-45: In his teaching, Jesus said "Why do you notice the splinter in someone else's eye, but don't notice the plank in your own eye?  Deal with your own faults before you start correcting other people. A good tree does not produce bad fruit. A bad tree does not produce good fruit. The fruit tells you what sort of tree it came from. So with people: their words and actions tell you what their heart is like - good or bad
Jesus, please help me be a good person, producing good fruit

Sat March 2

I spent yesterday morning at Lai King prison for young women, and yesterday afternoon at Pik Uk prison for young men. I usually try to visit these two places once a month. One of the young men I visited, from Malaysia, is aged 19 and never went to school. He cannot read or write. Neither his consulate nor himself was able to tell his family he was in HK. He couldn't remember his address or complete phone number. On his behalf and at his request I found his family (with the help of a kind taxi driver) when I was in Malaysia in January. His father at first said "it's impossible ... he does not have a passport". They did not know he was outside of Malaysia. Son and family are now in contact. And speaking of contacts, see below!

1 Kings 8-9: When the temple was finished, Solomon shifted the Sacred Chest to the temple. After the Chest was placed in the temple, the glorious cloud of the Lord filled the temple. Solomon then praised God and blessed the people. Solomon prayed that the temple would be a place of blessings. Solomon also prayed that all the peoples of the world would come to know the Lord from whom all life comes. The Lord again appeared to Solomon and said: "I will be near to all who enter the temple you have built."
Dear God, may all temples and churches in the world be places where people praise and love you

My recording of this reading

Psalms 52-60: Lord, I will tell everyone about how good you are. You are our Creator. Everyone should love you. Thank you for so often rescuing me from trouble. You uphold my life. Sometimes I have so many troubles and cares that I can't get to sleep. Sometimes I wish I was a bird and could fly away to a safe place. When I fear, I will trust in you, in you whose word I praise. My heart is ready, O God, my heart is ready. I will sing, I will sing your praise. Each morning I will sing of your strength,
and each morning acclaim your love.

O God, please help me to praise and love you every day

Listen

2 John: In our life of truth and love, we have grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father. I write not to give you any new commandment, but the one we were given at the beginning: let us love one another; let us live a life of love. Keep to what Jesus taught. Don't follow anyone who changes what Jesus taught
Jesus, please protect me from people who distort your message

Listen

Mark 14.66-72: Peter went to the place where the religious leaders had Jesus on trial. A young woman in the courtyard of the place said to him "You were with Jesus, the man from Nazareth". Peter replied "I don't know what you're talking about". Peter went to the gateway of the place, where the woman saw him again and said to people around her "This man is one of them".
Peter denied it. Not long after this a group of people said to Peter "You are his friend. We can tell by your Galilean accent". Then Peter even more strongly replied "I do not know the man". At that very moment, a rooster crowed. Peter remembered Jesus' words "Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times". Peter then wept loudly.

Jesus, please help me not to deny you. Give me courage to say "I am a Christian"

Listen

Reflection on the above readings: He who had seen Jesus heal the sick, raise the dead, calm the storm, transfigured on the mountain ... he who had been appointed the first pope .... on the night of his ordination ("Last Supper") denied Jesus three times and was then absent at the sacred time of Jesus' agony and death on the Cross. Yet Jesus gave him a second chance. As Jesus also did for Saul/Paul. Much to think about.

---------------------------

In between prisons yesterday I went to an optical shop in Mei Foo to collect 14 boxes of contact lenses, 7 for each eye, for a woman in Lo Wu prison. Enough for 7 months. As I left the shop I started thinking about why the Creator gave us two eyes rather than one. Guess one nose was enough and it had to go in middle of face, so, good to have an eye each side? Better than one eye in the middle of two noses!

Fri March 1

Yesterday morning I visited 75 year old Nick in a local hospital ... a drug trafficking charge against him was dropped last Friday and he hopes, after recovering from an infection, to be able to return to the UK later this month.

In the afternoon I attended a meeting with lawyers preparing a Court of Appeal case for two Indonesian women who were recruited by a Nigerian in Malaysia to bring drugs to HK. While doing some Google searches before the lawyers' meeting I came across this video about Nigerian love scammers operating in Malaysia

During breakfast the past few days I watched this enlightening video about Benjamin Franklin .. who invented the lightning rod, who was quite a playboy, who helped the US gain its independence, and who birthed the idea of a two-house assembly for the US.

1 Kings 6-7: Solomon built the temple of the Lord with finest wood and many precious materials. The temple took 7 years to build. Solomon also built a palace for himself. This took 13 years to build.
Dear God, may all temples and churches in the world be places of prayer and peace

My recording of this reading

Psalm 51: Have mercy on me, God, in your kindness, and cleanse me of my sin. My offences truly I know them. What is evil in your sight I have done. But in my defence please don't forget that sinfulness is part of the human condition, part of our DNA. A pure heart create for me, O God. Put a steadfast spirit within me. Give me again the joy of your help. With a spirit of fervor sustain me.

1 John 4.20 -5.13: Anyone who says "I love God" but hates his brother, is a liar. A man who does not love the brother he can see cannot love God whom he has never seen. Who can overcome the world? Only the person who believes that Jesus is the Son of God. God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. You who believe in the Son of God have eternal life.
Jesus, I believe you are the Son of God

Listen

Mark 14.53-65: The men who arrested Jesus took him to a meeting of the religious leaders. The leaders wanted to condemn Jesus to death, even if they had to use false evidence. Jesus remained silent before their accusations. Then the main leader challenged Jesus: "Are you the Saviour, the Son of God?" Jesus replied "I am". The leader then called out "We have heard him claim to be of Divine origin. This is blasphemy". The rest of the leaders shouted "He should die". Then they spat in Jesus' face and hit him with their fists.
Jesus, thank you for submitting yourself to insult and spittle for the salvation of the world

Thu Feb 28

Yesterday morning I once again came away disappointed from the High Court after a strict-interpretation-of-the-rules judge gave only a miserly 3 months discount to an African man sentenced for drug trafficking  - even though the man had made a significant contribution to my anti-drug campaign.

Late afternoon I attended a meeting arranged by the new NGO "Voice for Prisoners" to discuss the issue of visitors for prisoners ... a complex issue indeed. Then last night I met with the family of a Malaysian man in prison who had a court hearing yesterday. Family came to HK to attend the hearing. I visited the man's home last month in Malaysia

1 Kings 4-5: Solomon enjoyed peace with all his neighbouring countries. He was blessed by God with great wisdom and understanding. He composed 3,000 proverbs and 1,000 songs. People from all nations went to hear Solomon's wisdom. Solomon made preparations for building a temple for the Lord. Hiram, king of Tyre, made a treaty with Solomon. Hiram provided wood for building the temple.

Psalms 49-50: I will turn my mind to a parable, with the harp I will solve a problem. The problem is: why do bad people prosper and succeed? The answer: at the end of their lives bad people will have to face death and judgement, just like everyone else. When we are rich, we often lack wisdom. Wealth blinds our minds and hearts. Let's not forgot God and his laws. Let's try to be good and lead good lives
Lord, please help me understand the meaning of life

1 John 4.7-16: Let us love one another. Love comes from God. God is love. God showed his love for us by sending his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins. Since God has loved us so much we should love one another. God is love. Anyone who lives in love, lives in God, and God lives in him

Jesus said to them "Am I a robber that you needed to capture me with swords and clubs?  Day after day I was openly teaching in the Temple". All the apostles then deserted him and ran away

Thought for the day: The basic building block of the universe is not an atom or DNA but  ...... love. This knowledge is a Eureka moment waiting to be discovered by science. As in these words from the great French scientist Pierre de Chardin: "Someday, after mastering the winds, the waves, the tides and gravity, we shall harness for God the energies of love, and then, for a second time in the history of the world, we will have discovered fire".

1 Kings 3: The Lord appeared to King Solomon in a dream and said "Ask me for anything you'd like." Solomon asked for wisdom: "Give your servant a heart to understand how to discern between good and evil." God replied: "I now give you a heart full of wisdom, wisdom greater than anyone else has ever had. And I also give you what you did not ask for: riches and glory and long life." Not long after this, two prostitutes came for judgement: they lived in the same house and both had given birth to a son, but one of the babies died during the night. The mother of the dead baby changed babies during the same night and claimed that the living baby was hers. Solomon  asked for a sword to cut the living baby in two and give half to each mother. The lying woman agreed, but the real mother said "No. Don't kill the baby. Give it to the other woman." Solomon then knew the real mother was telling the truth and gave the baby to her. For wisdom such as this, Solomon's reputation spread far.
Dear Lord, please give me more wisdom for my life

Psalms 47-48: All peoples, clap your hands, cry to God with shouts of joy. For the Lord, our Creator, we must love and honor,
great king over all the earth. Especially in his holy city is the Lord worthy to be praised. Praise is fitting in Mount Sion, our earth's most sacred site. O God, as we pray in your temple, our hearts meditate on your love. May peoples and rulers everywhere
acknowledge and love you as Creator of the Universe.

Let all the peoples praise you, Lord. Let all the peoples praise you

1 John 3.16-21: This has taught us love: that Jesus gave up his life for us. We too should give up our lives for others. If you see someone in need and refuse to help him, how can the love of God be in you? Our love must be put into practice, not be just words. Anyone who loves God must also love other people.
Jesus, help me put my love into practice by helping people in need

Mark 14.26-42: After the meal, Jesus said to his apostles "Tonight all of you will desert me". Peter said "I will never desert you". Jesus replied "Tonight before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times". They came to a place with olive trees called Gethsemane. Jesus asked Peter, James and John to pray with him. Jesus was overcome with sadness and fear. He said to them "Sadness is filling my heart, as if my heart is dying. Please support me as I pray". Then he fell on his face and prayed for about an hour: "Father, don't let this suffering continue. But your will be done". He stood up and found that the apostles were asleep. He said to them "Couldn't you stay awake one hour to support me?" Three times he prayed the same way. Three times the apostles went to sleep. Then he said "Get ready.  The one who is betraying me is coming".
Jesus, please help me give more time to prayer
