Tues March 12

Yesterday morning when I came back to Jordan after going to Tsim Sha Tsui to enrol some prisoners for university correspondence courses, I met a domestic helper not long out of detention ... and due to have a baby next month ... and experiencing a common problem for asylum seekers and other needy people in HK: a delay, on release from detention of one or more months before receiving government aid for accommodation and food. This is a heartless and cruel policy. Shame, HK government, shame, shame, shame! (And see below!)

God bless the Malaysian authorities for this compassionate judgement:
Suspect in case of N. Korean murder case released after charges dropped

Readings are from Simple Bible

1 Kings 20-21: King Ahab wanted the vineyard of Naboth, but Naboth refused to sell his ancestral inheritance. Ahab's wife Jezebel then had Naboth murdered and Ahab took the vineyard. The prophet Elijah  confronted Ahab for his crime. Ahab then repented of his crime.
Dear God, please help us respect other people's property

My recording of this reading

Psalm 78: Listen, everyone, to my teaching. I will recount the lessons of our history. The things our parents have told us, we will not hide from our children, but will pass them on to the next generation. We want the next generation to know all that the Lord has done for us in the past. May the next generation in turn pass on this knowledge to their own children, so that they too will put their hope in God and never forget all that God has done for us. May future generations not be like our ancestors who so often were unfaithful to God. Even though our ancestors had seen God part the sea, even though they had seen him provide food and water for them in the desert, still they went on sinning. Yet he who is full of compassion forgave and spared them. He remembered they were only weak humans.

Eventually he brought them to the promised land and gave a home to each of Israel's tribes. But still they sinned by building mountain shrines and serving idols. Then God raised up David to be their leader. God called him from looking after sheep to be the shepherd of his people.
Lord, help us not to forget all you have done for us

Revelation 2.12-16: He gave me this message for the church in Pergamum: "I know you live in a place where idol worship is strong. I know you have stayed faithful, even after one of you was killed. But some of you have compromised yourselves by eating food sacrificed to idols. And some of you have followed false teachers. Listen to this message and repent"
Jesus, don't let me ever compromise my faith

Luke 1.1-4: Dear Friend of God, there are  already many  reports written about Jesus. These reports come from people who were the earliest eyewitnesses and ministers of the Good News. After checking the whole story, I also have decided to write a report, so that you may see for yourself the truth and accuracy of the Good News.
Jesus, help me understand your Good News

Mon March 11

At last night's regular gathering for the poor at Yau Ma Tei Catholic Primary School there were about 250 guests (including around 20 people who sleep at McDonald's or in parks and a dozen ex-inmates) - served by more than 50 volunteers including a marvellous music group from HK University's Ricci Hall, a YMT Vincent de Paul group, a Legion of Mary group and many other kind people ... especially the group I call "the engine" who arrange the setting up of the hall and the distribution of rice boxes and other items. A happy night. Jesus, please bless all the guests and volunteers!

1 Kings 19: Elijah once spent a night in a cave. The Lord then told him to stand at the mouth of the cave. Then there was a mighty wind that shattered trees and rocks. But the Lord was not in the wind. Then there was an earthquake. But the  Lord was not in the earthquake. Then there was a gentle breeze. And the Lord was in the breeze. Not long after this Elijah called Elisha to become his follower.
Dear Lord, please help us be aware of your presence in our lives

My recording of this reading

Psalms 73-77: Sometimes when I see how bad people prosper, I wonder what's the use in trying to be good? But then I realize that everyone someday has to pay the bill for any evil they have bought in the world. Sometimes when I see our world and religion in ruins, I wonder why has God abandoned us? Then I remember that God has promised to break the power of the wicked. He has promised to give strength to good people. So may all people honor the Lord our God and judge. May the Lord give us his loving help.
Lord, you are goodness itself. Please help us to be good and to trust you always

Revelation 2.8-10: He gave me this message for the church in Smyrna: "I know the trials you have been through, and how poor you are, and the slanderous attacks that have been made on you. Do not be afraid of suffering, afraid of prison. Even if you have to die, keep faithful, and I will give you the prize of eternal life"
Jesus, help me stay faithful when I experience trials and suffering

Mark 16.9-20: After he rose from the dead, Jesus appeared first to Mary of Magdala, from whom he had cast out 7 devils. Next  he appeared to two of his disciples while they were on a journey. Then he appeared to the 11 apostles. He said to them "Go everywhere in the world. Proclaim the Good News to all creation. Anyone who believes and is baptized, will be saved.
Anyone who refuses to believe, will be condemned. These are the signs that will be associated with believers:
- in my name they will cast out devils
- they will have the gift of tongues
- they will pick up snakes in their hands
- they will be unharmed if they drink poison
- they will lay their hands on the sick, who will be healed".
And so, the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up to heaven, while they, going out, preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming their message by the miracles that accompanied the message
Lord Jesus, may more and more people all over the world believe in you

c.f. readings for Lent 1

Deuteronomy 26: Moses' teaching: "When you enter the land the Lord your God is giving you, you must take the first-fruits of your produce to the priest then in office and say 'Today I declare to the Lord my God that I have come to the land the Lord swore to our fathers he would give us.' After the priest receives your offering, you must declare: 'My father was a wandering Aramaean. He went down to Egypt to find refuge there, few in number. But then he became a nation, great and strong. The Egyptians ill-treated us, they gave us no peace and inflicted harsh slavery on us. But we called on the Lord our God who heard our voice and saw our misery, toil and oppression. The Lord our God then brought us out of Egypt with mighty hand and outstretched arm, with signs and wonders. He brought us here and gave us this land, a land where milk and honey flow. So I now bring the first-fruits of my produce that you, Lord, have given me'. You are then to share these gifts with your household
and with the Levite and stranger who live among you
.

Dear Lord, help me to show gratitude for all your gifts, by sharing what I have with those less fortunate than I

Psalm 91: He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High says to the Lord "you are my refuge in whom I trust". The Lord will hide you and protect you. Under his wings you will find refuge. You will not fear any night time terror, nor any attack during the day. Upon you no evil shall fall, no plague approach where you dwell. For you has he commanded his angels to keep you safe in all your ways.
Dear God, thank you for your protection day and night

Romans 10-11: If your lips confess that Jesus is Lord, and if you believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, then you will be saved. How wonderful is God!  How great his wisdom and knowledge. What finite creature could ever understand the mind of our infinite Creator? All that exists comes from him. To him be glory for ever!
Jesus, Father, Spirit - three persons, one God - to you be glory for ever!

Luke 4.1-13: Filled with the Holy Spirit, Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness. For 40 days he ate nothing, and was tempted by the Devil. The Devil said "If you are the Son of God, turn a stone into bread". Jesus replied "Scripture says we do not live on bread alone". The Devil took him to a high place and showed him all the kingdoms of the world. "Worship me and they will all be yours" he said. Jesus replied "Scripture says we must worship only God". Then the Devil took him to the top of the Temple in Jerusalem and said "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down and let the angels protect you". Jesus replied "Scripture says we must not put the Lord our God to the test". The Devil then left him
Jesus, protect us from the Devil and all evil

Sat March 9

Yesterday I was at Lai Chi Kok men's prison from 10am to 6.30pm ... and as usual came away with a pile of "homework" which will keep me occupied for the next few days. Previously I said that 23 young Malaysians were arrested in HK for drug trafficking in 2018. Well yesterday I met one more who for some reason or other I didn't discover last year, so the figure is now 24. So far in 2019 there have been two I know of. I am hoping that the 2019 figure will not reach double digits. And speaking of statistics, Lai Chi Kok is again very overcrowded with 1,600 inmates

1 Kings 18: In the 3rd year of drought, the Lord sent Elijah to speak to Ahab. Elijah got Ahab to gather all the people and all the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel. Elijah challenged the prophets of Baal to produce fire to consume a sacrificed bull. Elijah mocked the false prophets as they ranted and raved and cut themselves, but produced no fire for their bull. Then Elijah got the people to pour water on his bull and he prayed to God to hear his prayer. A fire from heaven then consumed the bull and the people acknowledged the Lord as God. Elijah then told Ahab there would soon be rain, and the sky grew dark and produced torrents of rain.
Dear God, please help people not to follow false gods

Psalm 72: O Lord, please bless the king, that he might serve your people with justice. May the mountains bring forth peace for the people and the hills, justice. The kings of Sheba and Seba bring him gifts. All nations will serve him. He will save the poor when they cry for help and the needy who are helpless. He will have pity on the weak and save the lives of the poor. May every tribe be blessed in him. May every nation bless his name.
May all the nations know and love you, Lord

Mark 16.1-8: Jesus died on Friday afternoon. Early on Sunday morning, Mary of Magdala and two other women went to Jesus' tomb to anoint his body with spices. They had been wondering how they would roll away the large stone, but when they arrived, the stone had already been rolled away. When they went into the tomb, they saw a young man in a white robe and they were full of awe. But he said to them  "Do not be afraid. You are looking for Jesus who was crucified. He is not here. He has risen from the dead. Go and tell his disciples he  will see them in Galilee".
Jesus, when life seems hopeless, like a dead body in a tomb, please help us remember how you rose from the dead....and you can help us "rise" from any "hopeless" situation

Listen

Reflection on the above readings: In today's world so many situations in so many places seem "hopeless". The fight against drug trafficking or the fight against abortion are two which come to mind. But we need to remember that while the word "hopeless" is in every human dictionary, it is not in the Dictionary of Heaven  ... where HOPE appears in bright, bold capitals!

Recently when I helped an African prisoner send some money to their family through Western Union, I asked the lady at her tiny WU office how much the monthly rent was. 1 Kings 17: When Ahab was king of Israel, in the 9th century B.C., Elijah was a prophet of the Lord. Elijah told Ahab there would be no rain for a long time because the people were following the cult of Baal. Elijah did miracles in the name of the Lord:
he blessed a poor widow's food to make it increase, and he brought back to life a young boy who had died.

Dear God, please bless our prayers as you blessed the prayers of Elijah

My recording of this reading

Psalm 71: In you, O Lord, I take refuge. Please hear me and help me. Be a rock where I can take refuge. Rescue me from people who want to hurt me. It is you, O Lord, who are my hope. In you I have trusted since I was young. From my mother's womb you have been my help. My hope has always been in you. Now that I am old, please do not forget me. Now that my strength fails, do not abandon me. Now that I am old and grey-headed, may I continue to trust in you and proclaim your help. To you I will sing with the harp. All day long my tongue will tell of your goodness to me.
Lord, may all elderly people put their trust and hope in you

Revelation 1.9-17: I, John, share your sufferings. I was on the island of Patmos, imprisoned for having preached about Jesus. One Sunday the Spirit possessed me. I heard a voice shouting "Write down all you see, and send it to the seven churches of
Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea". I turned to see who had spoken to me, and I saw Jesus, full of glory. His face was like the sun shining with all its force. He said to me "Do not be afraid. It is I, the First and the Last. I am the Living One".

Jesus, Living One, we praise and adore you, Lord

Mark 15.33-39: Jesus was put on the cross sometime after 9am. From about noon until 3pm there was darkness over all the land. About 3pm Jesus cried out the words of Psalm 22 "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" A little while later he again cried out in a loud voice. Then he died. At that moment the holy curtain in the Temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The leader of the Roman soldiers who crucified Jesus, when he saw how Jesus died, said "Truly this man was a son of God"
Jesus, thank you for dying on the cross for the salvation of the world

Thu March 7

Yesterday I was at the High Court from 9.45am to 7pm! ... as part of a team supporting the application for bail by a 78 year old European man charged with drug trafficking (after being recruited by Nigerian Drug Lords in Sao Paulo). Appeal was successful, Thank you Jesus, and the man is now in a seniors' home (because he needs nursing care for a number of medical issues). He has a good chance of having his case dropped - like quite a number of elderly victims who have been acquitted in recent years. But because the charge was so serious, a lot (and I mean a lot!) of procedures had to be followed before the man was finally released from the High Court custodial section at 6.45pm. God bless his dedicated lawyers and a patient group of people from his home country's HK association who are sponsoring his stay at the seniors' home (and who stayed with me the whole day waiting for release time, then took him to the seniors' home).

1 Kings 12-16: After Solomon died, his son Rehoboam became king. The people asked Rehoboam not to be harsh like Solomon. Solomon had imposed heavy taxes, enforced labor etc. Rehoboam asked the elders for advice. They said "Treat the people kindly and they will serve you." Rehoboam asked his peers for advice. They said "Treat the people more harshly than your father." Rehoboam accepted the advice of his peers. Therefore the people of Israel rejected him as king. Only the people of Judah accepted him. The people of Israel made Jeroboam king. He had previously led an unsuccessful revolt against Solomon. Rehoboam and Jeroboam died and were succeeded by various kings who ruled over Judah and Israel.

Psalms 69-70: Save me, O God, for the waters have risen to my neck. I am sinking fast and can't keep afloat much longer. So many people hate me without cause. I have no more strength to resist them. May my situation not cause anyone to lose faith in you. May people realize that it is for your sake that I am taunted. Taunts have broken my heart. No one shows me any compassion. For food they give me poison. In my thirst they give me vinegar to drink. Lord, do not hide your face from your servant. Answer quickly for I am in distress. You are my rescuer, my help, O God. O Lord, do not delay to help me.
O God come to our assistance. Lord make haste to help us

Revelation 1.4-8: From John, to the seven churches of Asia province: grace and peace to you from him who is, who was, and who is to come, from the seven spirits at his throne, and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the First-born from the dead, the Ruler of the kings of the earth. Jesus Christ loves us and has washed away our sins with his blood, and made us a line of kings
and priests to serve his God and Father. It is he who will come on the clouds. Everyone, in every part of the world, will see him.
All hearts will be moved by his coming. "I am the beginning and the end", says the Lord God. "I am the originator and goal of all things".

Mark 15.21-32: As Jesus was taken to the place of crucifixion, a man named Simon, from Cyrene, was made to carry Jesus' cross. Sometime after 9am, Jesus was nailed to the cross. Two robbers were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left. Above Jesus' head was a sign with the charge against him. The sign said "The King of the Jews". People passing by that place made fun of Jesus. So did the religious leaders. They mocked and taunted him.

March 6 - ASH WED

Pope's Message for Lent includes these words:

Fasting means turning away from the temptation to "devour" everything to satisfy our voracity;

Prayer teaches us to abandon idolatry and the self-sufficiency of our ego;

Almsgiving helps us to escape from the insanity of hoarding everything for ourselves in the illusory belief that we can secure a future that does not belong to us.

c.f. readings for Ash Wed

Joel 1-4: My country has been invaded. Joy has disappeared from the land. Priests, put on sackcloth and lament. Proclaim a fast to pray for our nation. Turn to the Lord your God again, for he is all tenderness and compassion. Call out to the Lord for help. "Spare your people, Lord!" The Lord replies: "I will save and rescue you. I will pour out my spirit on all peoples. Every one will prophesy and see visions. You will learn that I am the Lord your God. Jerusalem will be a holy place."
Lord, let our land be filled with knowledge of you and love for you
My recording of this reading

Psalm 51: Have mercy on me, God, in your kindness, and cleanse me of my sin. My offences truly I know them. What is evil in your sight I have done. But in my defence please don't forget that sinfulness is part of the human condition, part of our DNA. A pure heart create for me, O God. Put a steadfast spirit within me. Give me again the joy of your help. With a spirit of fervor sustain me.
Lord, you will not spurn a humbled, contrite heart

Recording

2 Cor 5.14-19: The love of Christ is like a tsunami. It overwhelms us and sweeps us away when we remember how Jesus died for everyone. God, through Christ, has repaired his friendship with humanity. We must spread the news of this reconciliation.
"And when I think, that God his Son not sparing, sent him to die, I scarce can take it in"

- from the song "How Great Thou Art"

Recording

Matthew 6.1-15: Jesus said to the crowds: When you do a good deed, do it for its own sake, not just to get people to praise you. When you pray, love to pray in private in your heart. Don't be looking for people to notice and praise you. When you pray, there's no need to rave on and on. God is not deaf. Prayer is not a lawyer arguing a case. Prayer is a child speaking with simple trust like this: Our Father in heaven, may everyone love and honor you. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as in heaven. Thank you for enough food for today. Forgive us as we forgive others. Save us in time of trial. Protect us from evil.
Jesus, help me remember that each time I pray "The Our Father", you are praying with me. "Your Father = my Father = our Father"

Recording
