Tues March 19

Of the 9,000 or so asylum seekers in HK, only a few dozen have been granted refugee papers by the United Nations - such is the harshness shown to asylum seekers here. Last night I met two of the lucky ones, a Catholic (not Coptic) couple from Egypt who are hoping some other country will accept them. Husband has bullet wound in right leg. He and his wife fled from genuine danger in Egypt. Refugees need a sponsoring group in order to apply for resettlement. Not an easy thing in today's hostile world. But today being the feast of a man who fled to Egypt with his family, may his intercession open a door somewhere. If anyone in some other country would be interested in more details, please email me: jdwomi@gmail.com

c.f. readings for Feast of St Joseph

2 Samuel 7: After David settled into his palace and the land enjoyed peace, David thought about building a temple for the Lord. Then through the prophet Nathan the Lord told David: "I will establish your dynasty for ever. But it will be your son, not yourself, who will build a temple for me." David praised God: "Who am I, Lord, and what is my House, that you have helped me so much and promised me so much? May my House continue in your presence for ever. May you bless my House forever."
Jesus, Son of David, give peace to our world

My recording of this reading

Psalm 134: I will sing for ever of your love, O Lord; through all ages my mouth will proclaim your truth. Of this I am sure, that your love lasts for ever,  that your truth is firmly established as the heavens. "I have made a covenant with my chosen one;  I have sworn to David my servant: I will establish your dynasty for ever, and set up your throne through all ages".
Jesus, Son of David, may your kingdom of peace come in our troubled world

Recording

Revelation 22.16-20: "I, Jesus, have sent my angel to make these revelations to you for the sake of the churches. I am of David's line, the Root of David, the Bright Star of the Morning". The Spirit and the Bride say: "Come". Let all who want eternal life say: "Come". Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!
Jesus, Son of David, come into our world!

Recording

Matthew 1.18-24: This is how Jesus Christ came to be born. His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph; but before they came to live together she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. Her husband Joseph, being a man of honour and wanting to spare her publicity, decided to divorce her informally. He had made up his mind to do this when the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, 'Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because she has conceived what is in her by the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son and you must name him Jesus, because he is the one who is to save his people from their sins.' When Joseph woke up he did what the angel of the Lord had told him to do.
Jesus, Son of David, save your people from war and strife

Recording

Reflection on the above readings:

Correction to popular use:  Joseph was the step-father, not foster-father of Jesus, because Joseph was the husband of Mary, and Mary was Jesus' biological mother. c.f. What's the difference between foster father and step father?
St Joseph, pray for our families!

(in honor of March 19, St Joseph): Thief broke into convent of Sisters of St Joseph. Then a voice was heard: Joseph is watching. Voice was again heard: Joseph is watching. Thief uses torch....sees that "voice" is a parrot. Thief goes on putting items in his sack. Voice then says to huge guard dog: "Get him, Joseph!"!!!

2 Kings 5: Naaman was an army commander for the king of Aram. Naaman enjoyed success and favor, but he was a leper. He heard about Elisha and the king sent him to Elisha with  gifts of gold, silver and garments to request healing. When Naaman reached Elisha's house, Elisha sent him a message: "Bathe 7 times in the Jordan River." At first Naaman was angry at this message, having expected Elisha to see and heal him personally. But then he humbly bathed 7 times in the Jordan and his flesh became clean once more. Elisha declined Naaman's gifts. But after Naaman left Elisha, Elisha's servant Gehazi caught up with Naaman and deceitfully obtained some silver. Elisha confronted Gehazi about this and Gehazi became a leper.
Dear God, please heal everyone who has leprosy

My recording of this reading

Psalm 85: I will hear what the Lord God has to say, a voice that speaks of peace. Peace for his people and his friends and those who turn to him in their hearts. His help is near for those who love him and his glory will dwell in our land. Mercy and faithfulness have met. Justice and peace have embraced. Faithfulness shall spring from the earth and justice shall look down from heaven. The Lord will make us prosper and our earth shall yield its fruit. Justice shall march before him and peace shall follow his steps
Lord, please give more peace to our world

Listen

Revelation 4.1-11: In my vision I saw a door open in heaven. The same voice as before said to me "Come up here. I will show you what is to come in the future". I saw God in all his glory, being worshipped by the angels who sang: "Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord God, the Almighty". And I saw 24 elders around the throne. They were praising God saying "You are our Lord and our God. You are worthy of glory and honor and power because you are the Creator of the universe
"Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God, Almighty. Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee"

Listen

Luke 4.14-22: Jesus, with the power of the Spirit in him, returned to Galilee. He taught in local prayer halls. His reputation spread. He came to his home town of Nazareth and went to the prayer hall on the Sabbath day as he usually did. He stood up and read these words from the prophet Isaiah: "The spirit of the Lord has been given to me. He has sent me to bring good news to the poor, to proclaim liberty to prisoners, to give sight to the blind, to set the downtrodden free". Jesus then sat down and said to the people in the prayer hall "These words from Isaiah are being fulfilled today even as you listen".
Jesus, please help me be more open to the power of your Spirit. O Holy Spirit, please increase your influence in my life

Reflection on the above readings: "Liberty to prisoners" (Gospel) - when a prisoner is released from prison, there's a joy and relief that can only be imagined ... as in the case of two women who were acquitted by HK courts last week. May their number grow!

c.f. readings for Lent 2

Psalm 27: The Lord is my light and my help, whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life, before whom shall I shrink? Though an army encamp against me, even then would I trust. There is one thing I ask of the Lord, for this I long: to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life. It is your face, O Lord, that I seek. Hide not your face. I am sure I will see your goodness in the land of the living. Hope in the Lord, hold firm and take heart. Hope in the Lord!
Lord, you are my light and my help. I will always praise you.

Listen

Philippians 3.20 - 4.1: Our homeland is in heaven. We wait for the Savior from heaven who will transfigure these wretched bodies of ours into copies of his glorious body. He will do this by the same power he has as C.E.O. of the universe. So, do not stop running but remain faithful in the Lord.
Jesus, please increase my longing for heaven

Listen

Luke 9.28-36: One day Jesus took his disciples Peter, James and John up a high mountain to pray. On the mountain, while Jesus was praying, his whole appearance changed. His clothes became brilliant as lightning. The prophets Moses and Elijah appeared and spoke with Jesus. Peter said to Jesus "Lord, how good it is for us to be here!" Then a bright cloud covered them with its shadow. From the cloud came a voice: "This is my Son, the Beloved. Listen to him". When the voice had finished speaking, the disciples saw only Jesus in his normal appearance.
Jesus, Beloved Son of God, how good it is to spend time with you in prayer.

Sat March 16

Yesterday I left home at 8am for the long trip to Fanling Court for a special case. The I spent a couple of hours at Lai Chi Kok men's prison before going to Central to sign an affidavit for a Court of Appeal case early next month. But from midday on I was totally distracted by the news from New Zealand.

On yesterday's menu I linked an article from California about its governor wisely opposing the death penalty. But after yesterday's killings in NZ I found myself thinking that the death penalty might well be justified in certain cases. See also my reflection on the readings, below, re connection between yesterday's killer, Brenton Tarrant, and Satanism

2 Kings 4: A poor widow whose husband had been a prophet asked Elisha for help when a creditor demanded her two sons as slaves. All she had was a small pot of oil, not enough to pay her debts. Elisha told her to get many jars, and start pouring oil from the pot into the jars. As she and her sons did this, the oil did not run out. Elisha told her to sell the oil to pay off her debts. At another time Elisha brought back to life a dead child. He also once brought about a miraculous multiplication of bread.
Dear God,  you once worked miracles by the prayers of Elisha. Please let  miracles be done in our day.

My recording of this reading

Psalm 84: How lovely is your sacred temple, Lord. My heart is longing to spend time in your holy dwelling. Even sparrows and swallows are your temple guests. They build homes for their young near your altar. Blessed are the people who live and work in your temple. And blessed, too, are people who keep the memory of your temple in their hearts. As they go through the troubles of life, you give them strength to face the trials of each day. Lord, one day within your temple is better than a thousand anywhere else.
Dear God, thank you for special places of prayer

Listen

Revelation 3.14-17: He gave me this message for the church in Laodicea: "You are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were one or the other. But since you are lukewarm, you are cutting yourself off from me. You are rich in this word's goods, but you are spiritually poor. Listen to this message and repent"
Jesus, please don't ever let me become a lukewarm Christian

Listen

Luke 4.1-13: Filled with the Holy Spirit, Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness. For 40 days he ate nothing, and was tempted by the Devil. The Devil said "If you are the Son of God, turn a stone into bread". Jesus replied "Scripture says we do not live on bread alone". The Devil took him to a high place and showed him all the kingdoms of the world. "Worship me and they will all be yours" he said. Jesus replied "Scripture says we must worship only God". Then the Devil took him to the top of the Temple in Jerusalem and said "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down and let the angels protect you". Jesus replied "Scripture says we must not put the Lord our God to the test".  The Devil then left him
Jesus, protect us from the Devil and all evil
Listen

Reflection on the above readings: The word "evil" is in the word "Devil", reminding us that all evil is somehow connected with the Devil ... like the evil killings in New Zealand yesterday. In fact, on his shirt and in his manifesto, Brenton Tarrant used the Black Sun, a special symbol for Satanists

2 Kings 2-3: The Lord revealed to Elisha and other prophets that Elijah would be taken up to heaven in a whirlwind. Elisha said to Elijah "Let me inherit a double share of your spirit." Then a chariot of fire appeared with horses of fire, and Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind. The spirit of Elijah then came to rest on Elisha and he began to do miracles by the power of the Lord.

Psalms 82-83: God says to corrupt officials: "How long will you judge unjustly and mistreat the poor? You should do justice for the weak and the orphan. You should defend the afflicted and the needy. You should rescue the weak and the poor. You should set them free from the hand of the wicked". O God, please protect your people from corruption and injustice. Jesus, please give me more opportunities to spread the Good News

Luke 3.15-22: John the Baptist said to the people "I baptize you with water, but someone more powerful than I will baptize you with the Holy Spirit. I am not fit to undo the strap of the powerful one's sandals". Jesus then came and was baptized by John. While Jesus was praying after his baptism, heaven opened and the Holy Spirit came down on him in the shape of a dove. And a voice came from heaven "You are my Son, the Beloved. My favor rests on you"
Jesus, Beloved Son, please baptize me with your Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit, please increase your influence in my life

Listen

2 Kings 1: Ahaziah, king of Israel, was seriously ill after a fall. He tried to send messengers to the temple of a false god to ask about his future. But the Lord sent Elijah the prophet to intercept the messengers and tell them that the king would die. The king sent 50 soldiers to arrest Elijah but as they approached Elijah, fire from heaven destroyed them. The king sent another 50 soldiers. They too were destroyed by fire from heaven. A third group of 50 was sent. They begged Elijah to spare them. The Lord told Elijah to go with them to the king. Elijah then told the king to his face that he would soon die because he had tried to ask a false god about his future. Not long after this, Ahaziah died.
Dear Lord, please don't let us ever get involved with false religion

Psalm 81: Ring out your joy to God our strength, shout in triumph to the God of Jacob. Listen to the voice of the Lord: "I am the Lord your God who brought you out from the land of Egypt. Let there be no foreign god among you, no worship of a false god. O that my people would heed me, that Israel would walk in my ways. At once I would subdue their foes. But Israel I would feed with finest wheat and honey".
Lord, please help us to walk in your ways

Recording

Revelation 3.1-3: He gave me this message for the church in Sardis: "I know all about you. You are a shining red apple on the outside, but inside you are rotten. Wake up, revive your faith and love. Remember the eagerness you showed when you first heard the Good News. Listen to this message and repent"
Jesus, don't ever let me become a rotten apple

Luke 3.10-14: People asked John the Baptist how they should reform their lives. He replied: "If anyone has extra clothing, share with people who have none. If anyone has plenty to eat, share with people who have nothing". Tax collectors asked John what they should do. He replied "Don't cheat anyone". Soldiers asked him "What about us? What must we do?" He replied "No bullying. No extortion. Be content with your pay"
Jesus, what about me? What should I do?

Wed March 13

I was at Tai Lam women's prison from 10am to 6pm yesterday and, as usual, came away wondering what can be done to stop simple domestic helpers (Filipino and Indonesian) from being tricked by Nigerian "boyfriends" to allow, for the first time in their life, a parcel of drugs to be delivered to their employer's address for them to sign for "because boyfriend and his wife have  to work and cannot be at their home to collect parcel" .... the poor woman thereby falling into a trap arranged by the Nigerian (a Custom's informer) and Customs ... with a disguised Customs officer delivering the parcel. For which Nigerian gets protection, Customs officer gets promotion, and woman gets prison. Yesterday I met 5 women so tricked, by two Nigerians (one has 3 victims, the other 2 victims). Correct me if I am wrong, but has the HK government spent even one cent (out of it's trillion dollar bank account) on advertising to warn people about this situation?

Happy 6th Anniversary today Pope Francis!

1 Kings 22: Some false prophets encouraged the king of Israel and the king of Judah to go to war. Micah, a true prophet of the Lord, warned the kings not to go to war. The men of Israel and Judah were defeated in the war. Ahab, the king of Israel, died in the war.
Dear Lord, please don't let false prophets deceive the world

My recording of this reading

Psalm 79-80: O God, the nations have invaded your sacred land, they have profaned your holy temple. They have made Jerusalem a heap of ruins. We have become the taunt of our neighbours, the mockery and scorn of those who surround us. How long, O Lord, will all this last? How long will this sorrow keep going? Do not hold the guilt of our ancestors against us. If their guilt is somehow influencing our situation now please give peace and healing to everyone and everything in our history. Let the groans of the prisoners come before you. Let your strong arm reprieve those condemned to die. O Lord, our God, help us and save us. Let your face shine on us and we shall be saved.
Lord, please heal any problems in my family tree

Revelation 2.18-22: He gave me this message for the church in Thyatira: "I know how charitable you are. I see you faith and devotion, and your courage in suffering. But some of you are being misled by a false teacher. You are imitating her bad behavior. Listen to this message and repent".
Jesus, please don't let me imitate bad behavior

Luke 3.1-6: In the 15th year of the Roman Emperor Tiberius Caesar, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judaea, Herod was ruler of Galilee and during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, God's message entered the heart of John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. John went through the whole Jordan River area proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. This had been foretold by the prophet Isaiah when he said "A voice cries in the wilderness: Prepare a way for the Lord"
Jesus, help us prepare your way, like John
