Of the 9,000 or so asylum seekers in HK, only a few dozen have
been granted refugee papers by the United Nations - such is the harshness shown
to asylum seekers here. Last night I met two of the lucky ones, a Catholic (not
Coptic) couple from Egypt who are hoping some other country will accept them.
Husband has bullet wound in right leg. He and his wife fled from genuine danger
in Egypt. Refugees need a sponsoring group in order to apply for resettlement.
Not an easy thing in today's hostile world. But today being the feast of a man
who fled to Egypt with his family, may his intercession open a door
somewhere. If anyone in some other country would be interested in more details,

How quiet city became target for terror

Jefferson - last week I watch this fascinating two-part video about the man who wrote "all
men are born equal" yet had 200 slaves. Both he and his predecessor
President John Adams died on July 4, 1826, the 50th anniversary of the
Declaration of Independence.
A team of 12 students and 3 teachers from Newman College were
kind volunteers at yesterday afternoon's gathering for the poor at Yau Ma Tei.
The joy of the Newman group was most inspiring - God bless them!

Naaman was an army commander for the
king of Aram.
Naaman enjoyed success and favor, but he was a leper. He heard about Elisha and the king sent him to
Elisha
with gifts of gold, silver and garments to request healing. When Naaman reached Elisha's house,
Elisha sent him a message: "Bathe 7 times in the Jordan
River." At first Naaman was angry at this message,
having expected Elisha to see and heal him personally. But then he humbly bathed 7 times in the
Jordan
and his flesh became clean once more.
Elisha declined Naaman's gifts.
But after Naaman left Elisha, Elisha's servant Gehazi
caught up with Naaman and deceitfully obtained some silver. Elisha confronted Gehazi about this
and Gehazi became a leper.

"The spirit of the Lord has been given to me. He has sent me
to bring good news to the poor, to proclaim liberty to prisoners,
to give sight to the blind, to set the downtrodden free". Jesus then sat down and said to the people in
the prayer hall "These words from Isaiah are being fulfilled today
even as you listen".
Jesus, please help me be more open to the
power of your Spirit.
O Holy Spirit, please increase your influence in my life

Reflection on the above readings: "Liberty to prisoners" (Gospel) - when a prisoner is released from prison, there's a joy and relief that can only be imagined ... as in the case of two women who were acquitted by HK courts last week. May their number grow!

Yesterday I left home at 8am for the long trip to Fanling Court
for a special case. The I spent a couple of hours at Lai Chi Kok men's prison
before going to Central to sign an affidavit for a Court of Appeal case early
next month. But from midday on I was totally distracted by the news from New
Zealand.
On yesterday's menu I linked an article from California about its governor wisely opposing the death penalty. But after yesterday's killings in NZ I found myself thinking that the death penalty might well be justified in certain cases. A poor widow whose husband had been a
prophet asked Elisha for help when a creditor demanded her two sons
as slaves. All she had was a small pot of oil, not enough
to pay her debts.
Elisha told her to get many jars,
and start pouring oil from the pot into the jars. As she and her sons did this, the oil did not
run out.
Elisha told her to sell the oil to pay off her debts. At another time Elisha
brought back to
life a dead child. He also once brought about a miraculous
multiplication of bread.
Dear God, you once worked
miracles by the prayers of Elisha.
Please let miracles be done in our day.

morning I was at the High Court for the case of a Bangladesh man set-up on a
drug trafficking charge (case adjourned), then the case of a young Greek woman
jury-acquitted 7-0 on a drug trafficking charge (SCMP report will be on
tomorrow's menu).

2 Kings 1:
Ahaziah, king of Israel, was seriously ill
after a fall.
He tried to send messengers to the temple of a false god
to ask about his future. But the Lord sent Elijah the prophet to
intercept the messengers
and tell them that the king would die. The king sent 50 soldiers to arrest Elijah
but as they approached Elijah, fire from heaven destroyed them. The king sent another 50
soldiers.
They too were destroyed by fire from heaven. A third group of 50 was sent. They begged
Elijah to spare them.
The Lord told Elijah to go with them to the king. Elijah then told the king to his face that he
would soon die
because he had tried to ask a false god about his future.
Not long after this, Ahaziah died.
Dear Lord, please don't let us

I was at Tai Lam women's prison from 10am to 6pm yesterday and,
as usual, came away wondering what can be done to stop simple domestic helpers
(Filipino and Indonesian) from being tricked by Nigerian "boyfriends"
to allow, for the first time in their life, a parcel of drugs to be delivered to
their employer's address for them to sign for "because boyfriend and his
wife have to work and cannot be at their home to collect parcel" ....
the poor woman thereby falling into a trap arranged by the Nigerian (a Custom's
informer) and Customs ... with a disguised Customs officer delivering the
parcel. For which Nigerian gets protection, Customs officer gets promotion, and
woman gets prison. Yesterday I met 5 women so tricked, by two Nigerians (one has
3 victims, the other 2 victims). Correct me if I am wrong, but has the HK
government spent even one cent (out of it's trillion dollar bank account) on
advertising to warn people about this situation?

John went through the whole Jordan River area
proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. This had been foretold by the prophet Isaiah
when he said

inmate I have ever seen in a prison: a two day old baby whose mother is in
detention. God bless them both!
