2 Kings 20: King Hezekiah became ill and was dying. Hezekiah begged the Lord to cure him. The Lord told Isaiah the prophet to tell Hezekiah: "I will add 15 years to your life." The king recovered and lived for another 15 years.

Dear God, please cure (..a sick person..) the way you curd Hezekiah

My recording of this reading

Psalm 91: He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High says to the Lord "you are my refuge in whom I trust". The Lord will hide you and protect you. Under his wings you will find refuge. You will not fear any night time terror, nor any attack during the day. Upon you no evil shall fall, no plague approach where you dwell. For you has he commanded his angels to keep you safe in all your ways.
Dear God, thank you for your protection day and night

Revelation 12.1-6: A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman, dressed in the sun, standing on the moon, crowned with 12 stars. She was giving birth to a child, and she cried out in the pain of childbirth. Then a second sign appeared: a huge red dragon, which wanted to eat the child. The woman gave birth to a son, the ruler of all nations. The son was taken straight up to heaven, to God on his throne. The woman escaped to safety in the desert, to a place prepared for her by God.
Jesus, protect us from Satan who goes round like a hungry lion wanting to eat us

Luke 5.12-16: In one town that Jesus went to, a leper fell on his face and pleaded "Sir, if you want to, you can heal me". Jesus stretched out his hand, touched him, and said "Of course I want to!  Be healed!" And the leprosy left him at once. Jesus' reputation continued to grow. Large crowds gathered to hear him speak and to have their sicknesses cured. But afterwards Jesus would always go to a quiet place where he could be alone and pray.
Jesus, please help me understand that you want sick people to be healed

Listen

Reflection on the above readings: The leper broke the law by approaching Jesus (... lepers were  supposed to stay away from people ...). Jesus broke the law by touching the leper (... not supposed to touch someone "unclean"). What about someone who's not supposed to receive Holy Communion .... ?

c.f. readings for March 25, Annunciation

Isaiah 7: A foreign king and his army attacked Jerusalem. The king of Judah and his people were full of fear. God told Isaiah to say to the king of Judah: "Keep calm, have no fear. You will not be defeated. The Lord himself gives you a sign of his protection: a maiden is with child and will give birth to a son whom she will call God-with-us."
Lord,  please help me understand how you are God-with-me every day

My recording of this reading

Psalm 40: You do not ask for sacrifice and offerings, but an open ear. You do not ask for holocaust and victim. Instead, here am I. In the scroll of the book it stands written that I should do your will. My God, I delight in your law in the depth of my heart. Your justice I have proclaimed in the great assembly. My lips I have not sealed, you know it, O Lord. I have not hidden your justice in my heart, but declared your faithful help. I have not hidden your love and your truth from the great assembly.
Here I am, Lord. I come to do your will

Luke 1.26-38 (a) In the sixth month of Elizabeth's pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to the town of Nazareth in Galilee, to a virgin named Mary who was betrothed to a man named Joseph. The angel said to her "Mary, Rejoice! You have been greatly blessed by God. You are to conceive and have a son whom you must name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of God". Mary said to the angel, "How can this happen since I am a virgin?"

Luke 1.26-38 (b) The angel replied "The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will specially bless you. Know this too: your cousin Elizabeth has, in her old age, conceived a son, and is now in her sixth  month". "I am the handmaid of the Lord", said Mary, "let what you have said, be done for me". And the angel left her.
God the Son, thank you for becoming a baby in Mary's womb

c.f. readings for Lent 3

Exodus 3: The Israelites begged God to free them from slavery in Egypt. God heard their cry and called Moses to be their leader. God appeared to Moses in a burning bush and said to him "I am the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. I have heard the prayers of my people in Egypt. I now send you to Pharaoh to win the freedom of my people." Moses asked what was God's name. God replied 'I Am who I Am. Tell the people "I Am has sent me to you".'
Dear God, God of life, God of Abraham, we praise you Lord.

My recording of this reading

Psalm 103: My soul, give thanks to the Lord. All my being, bless his holy name. My soul, give thanks to the Lord and never forget all his blessings. It is he who forgives all your guilt, who heals every one of your ills. It is he who fills your life with good things, renewing your youth like an eagle's life. The Lord is compassion and love, slow to anger and rich in mercy. As the heavens are high above the earth so strong is his love for those who love him. As far as the East is from the West, so far does he remove our sins. As a father has compassion on his children, the Lord has pity on all who love and honor him. Give thanks to the Lord, all his angels, who heed the voice of his word. Give thanks to the Lord, everyone and everything. My soul, give thanks to the Lord!
Thank you, Lord, for your love and compassion

Luke 13.1-9: Some people arrived and told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with that of their sacrifices. At this he said to them, "Do you suppose these Galileans who suffered like that were greater sinners than any other Galileans? They were not, I tell you. No; but unless you repent you will all perish as they did. Or those eighteen on whom the tower at Siloam fell and killed them? Do you suppose that they were more guilty than all the other people living in Jerusalem? They were not, I tell you. No; but unless you repent you will all perish as they did."
He told this parable: "A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came looking for fruit on it but found none. He said to the man who looked after the vineyard, "Look here, for three years now I have been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree and finding none. Cut it down: why should it be taking up the ground?" "Sir," the man replied "leave it one more year and give me time to dig round it and manure it: it may bear fruit next year; if not, then you can cut it down.""

Reflection on the above readings:  God who is LIFE (Exodus) and who is COMPASSION (Psalm 103) wants all his sons and daughters to be like him  - especially by bearing THE FRUIT (Gospel) of compassion for others

Sat March 23

Yesterday I was at Lai Chi Kok men's prison from 10.30am to 6pm. As usual I visited the prison's hospital section where the following conversation took place with a man from Nepal: Fr John, I've been granted bail, but I can't afford the money. Would you please help me? What are you charged with? A very tiny possession of Ice. How long have you been on Ice? Several years. Maybe it would be better for you to stay here to help you get off the Ice. But I can win my case. So I'm just wasting time here. Can you find someone else to pay your bail? What about your wife? She says the same as you - better for me to stay here....at which he broke into a big smile as he realised it was game over with the score at 2-0.

2 Kings 19: King Hezekiah asked the prophet Isaiah for advice. Isaiah said to the king: "The Lord says 'Do not be afraid of the King of Assyria. He shall not enter Jerusalem. I will protect this city and save it.'" That same night the angel of the Lord struck the Assyrian camp with a type of plague which killed thousands of men. The Assyrians then went back to their own land and did not attack Jerusalem.
Dear God, please protect ....... (the city where I am living now)

My recording of this reading

Psalm 90: O Lord you have been our refuge from one generation to the next. Before the earth or the world existed, you are God, without beginning or end. For you, a thousand years are like yesterday, come and gone so quickly. We humans have a short life, our life is over like a sigh. Our span is 70 years, or 80 for those who are strong. Make us know the shortness of our life, that we may gain wisdom of heart. In the morning, fill us with your love. Give success to the work of our hands.
Lord, help us realize the shortness of our life, that we may live our lives more wisely

Revelation 8-11: I saw how punishment is coming for all evil doers on the earth. I heard voices shouting: "The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and his Christ. He will reign for ever and ever". The 24 elders worshipped God saying: "We give thanks to you, Almighty Lord God. The time has come for everyone to be judged. The time has come for good people to be rewarded and bad people to be punished"
Jesus, please help bad people stop being bad

Listen

Luke 5.1-11: One day when Jesus was standing near the Lake of Gennesaret, with people pressing round him listening to the word of God, he saw two fishing boats near the bank. He got into one boat, it belonged to Simon Peter, and taught people from the boat, away from the shore a little distance. When he'd finished speaking he said to Simon "Go out further to deep water and use your nets for a catch of fish". Simon replied "Master, we worked hard all night and caught nothing, but if you say so I'll lower the nets". They soon caught so many fish that the nets began to tear. They called to their friends in the second boat to come and help. Both boats were soon filled with fish. Peter fell at Jesus' knees and said "Leave me, Lord, I am a sinful man", for he was overcome by the catch they had made, as were James and John who were his partners. But Jesus said to Simon "Don't be afraid. From now on, you will be fishers of men".  Simon and his friends then left everything to follow Jesus.
Jesus,  bless and protect  all "fishers of men"

Fri March 22

? An Indonesian domestic helper become asylum seeker who was due to be released from Lo Wu prison tomorrow and then spend a short period in Castle Peak Immigration Centre (CIC) was unexpectedly taken March 20 to CIC where staff (4 male and one female) insulted her with vile language, repeatedly bashed her head on a table and twisted her ears ... in an attempt to get her to agree to  leave HK and go back to Indonesia that night. She was allowed to call me at one stage around 1pm on March 20, but when I hesitated to encourage her to leave HK, the line was cut. She arrived back in Indonesia yesterday morning, immediately getting medical treatment for shock and a number of physical injuries. About a week ago when she realised what might happen on release from Lo Wu she wrote a letter dated March 15 to MercyHK manager Lucia Leung, asking Lucia to contact the Immigration Dept about her case. The letter's posting by staff was strangely dated March 11, and the actual posting date was March 19  ... and Lucia received the letter yesterday after the woman was already back in Indonesia. This shameful incident must be investigated. The woman's previous employer last year testified in court how she often cried through the night remembering the distressing circumstances she had fled from in Indonesia

2 Kings 14-18: After the death of Elisha, kings continued to come to power and be assassinated in Judah and Israel. It was then that the king of Assyria invaded Israel and Judah. Hezekiah, king of Judah, a good man, prayed to God for help
Dear God, please save us in time of trial

Psalm 89: I will sing for ever of your love, O Lord. Of this I am sure, that your love lasts for ever. The heavens proclaim your wonders, O Lord. The heavens are yours, the world is yours. Blessed the people who find joy in you, who walk, O Lord, in the light of your face.

Revelation 7.9-17: I saw a huge number, impossible to count, of people from every nation, race, and language. They were standing in front of the throne, with palms in their hands. They shouted: "Victory to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb". One of the elders told me who these people are: "These are the people who have been through the great persecution. They now serve God day and night in his sanctuary. The Lamb is their Shepherd. He leads them to springs of living water. God has wiped away all tears from their eyes"
Jesus, please help sorrowing people who are crying today

Luke 4.38-44: Jesus went to the home of Simon Peter. Simon's mother-in-law was sick in bed with a fever. Jesus was asked to help her. He bent over her, rebuked the fever and it left her. She immediately got up and served her guests. After the Sabbath finished at sunset, everyone who had sick friends brought them to Jesus. Laying his hands on each of them, he healed them. The next morning Jesus got up early and went to a lonely place to pray.  People found him and asked him not to leave the area. But he replied "I must proclaim the Good News of the kingdom of God to other towns too, because that is what I was sent to do"
Jesus,  heal my friend ... (name)... who is sick

Psalm 88: Lord my God, day and night I call to you for help. Please turn your ear to my cry. For my soul is filled with evils. My life is on the brink of the grave. I am reckoned as one in the tomb. Revelation 5.11-14: I heard the sound of an immense number of angels gathered around God's throne. There were 10,000 times 10,000 of them, shouting: "The Lamb that was sacrificed is worthy  to be given power, riches, wisdom, strength, honor, glory and blessing". I heard all living things in creation - angels, people, animals - crying out: "To the One sitting on the throne and to the Lamb, be all praise, honor, glory and power for ever and ever".
"Thou are worthy, Thou art worthy, Thou are worthy O Lord, to receive glory, glory and honor, glory and honor and power"

Luke 4.31-37: Jesus went to Capernaum, a town in Galilee. On the Sabbath day he taught in the local prayer hall. In the hall there was a man possessed by a devil which shouted "What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are: the Holy One of God". Jesus said sharply "Be quiet! Come out of him". And the devil left the man without hurting him. People in the hall said "He gives orders to unclean spirits and they obey him". Jesus' reputation continued to spread through the district.
Jesus, please protect my family from evil

2 Kings 6: The king of Aram was at war with Israel. But each time he planned an attack, Elisha warned the king of Israel and the attack was foiled. The king of Aram therefore sent soldiers to capture Elisha. Elisha prayed to God for help and the soldiers were temporarily blinded. While they were blinded, Elisha led them to the king of Israel. The king of Israel asked Elisha "Shall I kill them?" Elisha told him not to kill them but to feed them and let them go. After this there was peace for a time between Aram and Israel.
Dear God, please bless our enemies, and help us be kind to them

My recording of this reading

Psalm 87: On the holy mountain is Jerusalem, the Lord's cherished city. Of you are told glorious things, O city of God. All nations are called to serve and love the Lord. Revelation 5.1-10I saw a sealed scroll that no one could open. Then I saw a Lamb, which seemed to have been sacrificed. Luke 4.23-30: People in the prayer hall rejected Jesus. "Who does he think he is?" they asked. "He's just the son of Joseph". Jesus replied "No prophet is ever accepted in his own country". Jesus, please forgive people who reject you. Please help them accept you
