Ezra 7: Ezra was a scholar who loved to study the Law of the Lord. He was a descendant of Aaron. The Lord moved the heart of the king of Persia to grant any request that Ezra made to help the Jews. Ezra prayed: "Blessed be the Lord our God, for moving the king's heart to look favorably on the rebuilding of our temple."
Dear God, please move the hearts of all government leaders to look favorably on citizens who want to do good things

My recording of this reading

Psalm 97: The Lord is king, let earth rejoice, the many coastlands be glad. Cloud and darkness are his robes. His throne is justice and goodness. The skies proclaim his goodness. All peoples see his glory. Let those who serve idols be ashamed. Let all creation worship  the Creator. Light shines forth for good people and joy for the upright of heart. Rejoice in the Lord, all good people. Give glory to his holy name.
Lord, you indeed are God of the universe

Revelation 18.1-4: I saw another angel, shouting at the top of his voice: "Babylon has fallen, Babylon the Great has fallen. Gone for ever, never to return, is your life of magnificence and ease". Another voice spoke from heaven: "Come out, my people, away from Babylon, so that you do not experience her punishment"
Jesus, please help us not be contaminated by worldly values

Listen

Luke 6.2-26: Jesus said to his disciples "Blessed are you who are poor: yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are you who are hungry: you shall be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now: you shall be happy. Blessed are you when people hate you because of me: your reward will be great in heaven.

But alas for you who are rich: your consolation is only in this world. Alas for you who have plenty to eat: you shall go hungry.
Alas for you who laugh now: you shall mourn and weep"

Jesus, please help me to give more time and importance to the things that really matter

Mon April 1

At last night's weekly gathering for the poor at Yau Ma Tei Catholic Primary School there were several groups of visiting volunteers including a wonderful music group from Peng Chau Island, a youth group from Cheung Chau Island, and a group of 9 students and 3 teachers from Mazenod O.M.I. college in Melbourne. A very happy night, thank you Jesus! With one special bit of providence: An Egyptian refugee couple (mentioned in this blog a few weeks ago) who have UN-acknowledged refugee papers (they are not just asylum seekers) came last night ... and one of the Mazenod boys is from Egypt! My dream: the Mazenod group might be able to help the couple get to Australia please God!

Ezra 5-6: The prophets Haggai and Zechariah encouraged the people in the rebuilding of the temple. Despite opposition, the Jews kept on rebuilding the temple.
Dear God, when anyone tries to stop us from doing good, please give us courage to keep going

My recording of this reading

Psalm 96: O sing a new song to the Lord. Sing to the Lord, all the earth. O sing to the Lord, bless his name. Proclaim his help day by day. Tell among the nations his glory, and his wonders among all the peoples. It was the Lord who made the heavens. Give the Lord, you families of peoples, give the Lord glory and honor. Bring an offering and enter his temple. Worship the Lord in his sacred place. Let the heavens rejoice and earth be glad. Let the sea and all within it thunder praise. Let the land and all it bears rejoice, all the trees of the forest shout for joy. Everyone and everything, give the Lord glory and honor.
Lord, you are our Creator. We love and praise you

Listen

Revelation 15.1-4: Then I saw something great and wonderful: those who had fought against the beast and won, were singing the Song of the Lamb: "Great and wonderful are all your works, Lord God almighty. Just and true are all your ways, King of nations. All nations will come and adore you"
Jesus, may all the nations of the earth adore you

Listen

Luke 6.12-16: Jesus went to the hills to pray. He spent a whole night praying. In the morning he called all his disciples together. He chose 12 of them and called them "apostles": Peter and his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Simon, Judas son of James - and Judas Iscariot who became a traitor. Jesus and the 12 came down from the hill to a place of level ground. Gathered there were his many disciples and a large crowd of people from all over the country who had come to hear him and to be healed of diseases. People in the crowd tried to touch Jesus because power came out of him that cured everyone
Jesus, please bless modern day apostles who pray for the sick to be healed

Reflection on the above readings: May healing of the sick be a ministry which restores/renews the image of the Church in the world ... fulfilling the words of Francis McNutt that the healing ministry will lead to an immense spreading of the Good News.

Sun March 31

To make up for so much criticism I have posted about HK Customs, here is a story on the other side of the fence: a 77 year old European man was arrested at HK airport last year after being tricked on-line by Nigerian Drug Lords to go from Europe to Sao Paolo, Brazil and bring a bag of drugs to HK. Man's medical condition, a top legal team and a kind judge combined saw him granted bail about a month ago (with myself going bail and surety for him). Last night during a meal the man recalled how Customs officers from HK airport went with him to the hotel where he was supposed to deliver the bag .... man even spent a night at the hotel in case the bad guy showed up ... with Customs officers sleeping on the floor! Next day, back at HK airport after a 3 hour video statement was taken, a senior Customs officer took the man to a private room and .... with tears in his eyes ... said "I'm sorry, but we have to charge you" ... and man then spent the next 3 months in detention. What a kind Customs officer!  (and see below!)

c.f. readings for Lent 4

Joshua 5: The kings of the Jordan area heard that the Lord had dried up the Jordan's waters to let the Israelites cross over. The kings became very afraid of the Israelites. At Gilgal near the Jordan the Lord instructed Joshua that all un-circumcised men should be circumcised. It was at Gilgal that the Israelites kept the Passover Feast and tasted the produce of the land. As soon as the Israelites tasted the produce of the land, the manna stopped falling.
Dear God, thank you for all you did for the Israelites

My recording of this reading

Psalm 34: I will bless the Lord at all times, his praise always on my lips. In the Lord my soul shall make its boast, the humble shall hear and be glad. Glorify the Lord with me, together let us praise his name. I sought the Lord and he answered me. From all my terrors he set me free. The angel of the Lord is encamped around those who revere the Lord, to rescue them. Taste and see that the Lord is good. They are happy who seek refuge in him. The Lord is close to the broken-hearted. Those whose spirits are crushed he will save.
Lord, by our Bible reading and prayer, may we taste and see your goodness each day

2 Cor 5.14-19: The love of Christ is like a tsunami. It overwhelms us and sweeps us away when we remember how Jesus died for everyone. God, through Christ, has repaired his friendship with humanity. We must spread the news of this reconciliation

Luke 15.11-24: Jesus told this story: a man had two sons. The younger said to his father "Father, give me the share of the estate that would come to me". So the father divided his property between them. A few days later, the younger son left for a distant land where he wasted his money in wild living. When he had used all his money, that country had a severe famine, and he began to feel the pinch, so he got a job on a farm  feeding  pigs. He would willingly have eaten the pigs' food, but no one offered him anything. Then he came to his senses and said "How many of my father's paid servants have more food than they want, and I am dying of hunger I will leave this place and go to my father and say: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I no longer deserve to be called your son. Treat me as one of your paid servants." So he left the place and went back to his father.

While he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was moved with pity. He ran to the boy, clasped him in his arms and kissed him tenderly. Then the son said "Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I no longer deserve to be called your son"

But the father said to his servants "Quick! Bring out the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the calf we have been fattening, and kill it. We are going to have a feast, a celebration, because this son of mine was dead and has come back to life. He was lost and is found."
Jesus, please help me understand how much you love me, no matter what  mistakes I make

Reflection on the above readings: We remember the Lord's goodness to us (first reading), how "good to eat" is his goodness (Psalm 34), how he continually calls us to be reconciled to himself and others (2 Corinthians) ... with the "Prodigal son" (Gospel) being a classic example of such reconciliation

Yesterday morning was spent at Lai King prison for young women. Followed by an afternoon at Pik Uk prison for young men. I came away from both places with the same mantra: "If only Customs and the police would go after the Drug Bosses who are putting young people in prison". I also felt renewed frustration at the fact that sometimes Customs not interested in asking obvious in-depth questions when they arrest people at the airport.

Ezra 4: Having returned from exile, the Jews started to rebuild their temple in Jerusalem. But some enemies of Israel tried to frighten and dishearten the Jews from rebuilding the temple.
Dear God, when anyone tries to stop us from doing good, please give us courage to keep going

My recording of this reading

Psalm 95: Come ring out our joy to the Lord. Hail the rock who saves us. Let us come before him giving thanks. With songs let us praise the Lord. A mighty God is the Lord, a great king above all gods. In his hand are the depths of the earth. The heights of the mountains are his. To him belongs the sea, for he made it, and the dry land shaped by his hands. Come in, let us bow and bend low. Let us kneel before the God who made us. For he is our God and we are the people who belong to his pasture.
Lord, you are our Creator. Our life comes from you. We praise and love you, Lord

Luke 6.6-11: On another Sabbath Jesus  visited a prayer hall. A man with a withered hand was in the prayer hall. Some religious leaders were watching to see if Jesus would heal the man (since no work was allowed on the Sabbath, and they regarded healing as work). Jesus knew what they were thinking,  so he said to the man with the withered hand "Stand up! Come out into the middle of the hall". He came out and stood there. Jesus then asked the leaders "Is it against the law on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil; to save life or to destroy it?" Then he said to the man with the withered hand "Stretch out your hand". He stretched it out. It was healed. The leaders were very angry. They left the prayer hall and began plotting how to get rid of Jesus
Jesus, please stop bad religious leaders from misleading people

Reflection on the above readings:  Some people are professional obstructionists (as in today's first reading). No matter what is proposed, they will oppose it. This is one reason why democracy doesn't work so well in many places - the obstructionists have too much influence.

Psalm 94: O Lord,  Judge of the earth, how long will the wicked crush the poor? The wicked say "God does not hear". But can he who made the ear, not hear? Blessed are those whom the Lord teaches. Revelation 14.6-13: I saw an angel flying high in the sky,  sent to announce the Good News of eternity to every nation, race, language and tribe. He was calling: "Honor God and praise him. Luke 6.1-5: One Sabbath day Jesus and his disciples were walking through a cornfield.  The disciples were hungry. They picked some ears of corn and ate them. Picking corn on the Sabbath was regarded as unlawful by the Pharisees. So the Pharisees said to Jesus "Your disciples are breaking the Sabbath law". Jesus replied "Don't you remember what King David and his followers once did when they were hungry? They ate the Temple bread which only the priests were allowed to eat. I am Master of the Sabbath".
Jesus,  please help me understand that love is more important than law

Thu March 28

A few years ago I used to visit the two men's prisons on Hei Ling Chau Island on alternate weeks. But to my shame, my last visit was Easter last year. Main reasons: need for increased visits to other prisons + anti-drug campaign + time at High Court etc.  Well, yesterday I finally got back to HLC - to section "18C" where I shook hands with around 300 men (80% of them local Chinese men) and gave out many copies of the Simple Bible and other books (following usual practice: at request of prisoners ... I put their numbers on the front cover, then gave the books to Welfare officers to distribute). Please God I can visit HLC more often in the future. It's a place where I should be more often.

On leaving the prison I was thinking about Jesus' words: "I was in prison and you visited me". And I thought how these words are very different from  "I was hungry/thirsty/naked/homeless and you helped me". Difference being that the hungry etc are usually good and innocent people ... whereas those in prison are usually "bad" and guilty people. c.f. Jesus' over the top love

Ezra 1: After the Jewish people had been in Babylon about 70 years, the Lord moved the heart of the king of Persia to free the Jews. The king also told the Jews to re-build their temple in Jerusalem.

Psalm 93: The Lord is king, with majesty enrobed, he has girded himself with power. The world you made firm, not to be moved. From all eternity, O Lord, you are. The oceans and coastlines of the world are majestic and powerful. But greater than the roar of mighty waters, more glorious than the surging of the sea is the Lord on high. Such a Lord, such a Creator, such a God. Truly your decrees are to be trusted. Holiness is fitting to your house O Lord, always and everywhere.
We praise you, Lord, our Creator

Luke 5.27-32: As Jesus walked along, he noticed a tax collector sitting by the customs house. The collector's name was Levi (Matthew). Jesus said to him "Follow me".  Leaving everything, he got up and went with Jesus. In Jesus' honor Levi held a banquet in his house. Many  tax collectors and social outcasts were present. The religious leaders complained "Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and outcasts?" Jesus replied "It is not those who are well who need the doctor, but the sick. I have come to call sinners, not the virtuous, to repentance".
Jesus, thank you for befriending people who were looked down on. Please help me do likewise

2 Kings 21-25: Josiah king of Judah was a good leader who loved the Lord and promoted religious reform. But most other kings of Judah and Israel at this time were not good. The country was invaded by the king of Babylon who deported most of the population to Babylon. Only the poorest people in the countryside were left behind.

Psalm 92: It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to make music to your name, O Most High, to proclaim your love in the morning, and your truth right through the night. Your deeds, O Lord, have made me glad. For the work of your hands, I shout with joy. To me you give the wild ox's strength. You anoint me with the purest oil. The dragon began to make war on the children of the Woman - those who obey God and bear witness to Jesus.

Luke 5.17-26: God's power was on display when Jesus healed people. People came from far and near to hear him teach, and to ask for healing. One day some people carried  a paralyzed man through a crowd to Jesus. The man was on a stretcher. Jesus knew that these people believed he could help them, so he said to the paralyzed man "My friend, your sins are forgiven". Some religious leaders in the crowd were thinking to themselves that Jesus was wrong to say he could forgive sins. So Jesus said to the leaders "Which is easier: to say 'Your sins are forgiven', or to say 'Get up and walk'?" Then to prove that he had authority to forgive sins, he said to the paralyzed man "Get up, pick up your bed and go home". The man got up, picked up his stretcher and went home. The crowd praised God for what they had seen
Jesus, please give me more faith in your power to forgive, your power to heal
