Tues April 9
During meals over the past week I watched this video - an excellent
summary of the famous Tang Dynasty period ... a time when the biggest country in
Europe had a population of 3 million, while China had a population of 70
million: The
Daming Palace &Tang Dynasty (618 - 907 AD) 唐朝大明宫
Last
night I was privileged to be a guest at the HK launch of China
in Life's Foreground, the autobiography of 96 year old Professor
Audrey Donnithorne who was born in Sichuan, who is one of the world's
greatest authorities on China ... and who was assisted in 1987 in HK by myself
and two others to establish the NGO Aitece
which has sent more than 400 teachers to China (with 19 in China this year). At
the book launch I met a number of most interesting people, like Dr Helen Tinsley
who in her retirement serves a HK
University one-stop information network for special needs children, and
Martin Alexander, Editor in Chief of Asia

not open in IE)

Tobit
1: Tobit was a Jewish
exile living in the city of Nineveh in Assyria.
Even though other
Jewish exiles, even his own relatives,
neglected their religion, Tobit stayed loyal to
God.
Tobit also cared for
the poor and hungry.
And he made a special practice of burying the dead.
Dear
God, please help me to be like Tobit:
loyal to you and caring for the poor
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
103: My soul, give thanks to the Lord.
All my being, bless his holy name. My soul, give thanks to the Lord
and never forget all his blessings. It is he who forgives all your guilt,
who heals every one of your ills. It is he who fills your life with good things,
renewing your youth like an eagle's life. The Lord is compassion and
love,
slow to anger and rich in mercy. As the heavens are high above the earth
so strong is his love for those who love him. As far as the East is from the West,
so far does he remove our sins. As a father has compassion on his
children,
the Lord has pity on all who love and honor him. Give thanks to the Lord, all his angels,
who heed the voice of his word. Give thanks to the Lord, everyone and
everything.
My soul, give thanks to the Lord!
Thank you, Lord, for your love
and compassion

Revelation
22.1-5:
Then an angel showed me the River of Life,
flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb, flowing crystal-clear through the middle of the city.
Here God's servants will worship him.
They will see him face to face,
and his name will be written on their foreheads. It will never be night again.
They will not need lamplight or sunlight,
because the Lord God will be shining on them
Jesus, may your name be written on my forehead

Luke
7.18-30:
John the Baptist, imprisoned by King Herod,
heard the news about Jesus. John sent two of his friends to
ask Jesus "Are you the promised One?" Jesus replied "Go and tell John
what you have seen today: the blind see again, the lame walk, lepers are
cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised to life, and the Good News is
proclaimed to the poor". Jesus then spoke to the people about John:
"Everyone who accepted baptism from John acknowledged God's plan. But
by refusing baptism from him, the religious leaders thwarted what God had
in mind for them"
Jesus, please don't let me do anything to
thwart your plan for my life

Reflection on the above readings: In today's world there's a need for more people like Tobit. May his example give us courage to stay loyal to God .... and to care for the poor.

??? Last Thursday night I made a late visit
to HK airport where I was allowed to give a little money to a man from South
America who was being deported from HK after a charge of not renewing his HKID
card was dropped against him ... and after he was tortured at a HK police
station ... and after police visited him during one of his 5 subsequent hospital
stays re metal that had been put into his stomach by police via a tube shoved
down his throat. Last night I received an email from the man to say he is safely
back in South America, so I can post this info .... including a short audio
recording from HK airport - made on Thursday night as the man and I had a quick
chat, surrounded by five male immigration officers, as he was being expelled
from HK with only a few items of clothing in a plastic bag and not one cent to his name:

Nehemiah
7-13:
The wall of Jerusalem was finally rebuilt
and doors were set in place in the wall.
In the seventh month of the lunar calendar
Nehemiah assembled all the people
and read to them the Book of the Law of Moses. This was the first time that most of the
people
had heard the words of Moses' Book. The people were grateful to God
and praised him with great happiness. The people also promised God
that they would serve him more faithfully in the future. But
while Nehemiah was away on a visit to the king
the people and leaders became careless about the Law. When
Nehemiah returned to Jerusalem
he brought the people back to proper observance of the Law
Dear God, may we find joy and
strength in reading the Bible
and may the world have more good leaders like Nehemiah

Psalm
102: O Lord, listen to my
prayer in my distress.
Do not hide your face from me. For my days are
vanishing like smoke,
my bones burn away like a fire. I forget to eat my
bread.
My skin clings to my bones. All day long my foes
revile me.
Those who hate me use my name as a curse. But you, O Lord, will
endure for ever.
You will arise and have mercy on Sion. You will hear the
groans of the prisoners
and free those condemned to die. I pray to you: "Do
not take me away before my time has come,
you whose days last from age to age.

Revelation
21.10-23: I saw the Holy City, the New
Jerusalem,
coming down from God out of heaven. It had God's glory, and glittered like
a precious diamond. There was no temple in the city, since the
Lord God and the Lamb were themselves the temple. The city did not need sun or moon for
light, since it was lit by the radiant glory of God and of the Lamb

Luke
7.11-17: Jesus and his disciples went to a town called
Nain. Many other people went with them. As they reached the town, a
dead man was being carried out for burial, the only son of his mother, and
she was a widow. When the Lord saw her, he felt sorry for her.
"Do not cry" he said. Then he said "Young man, I tell you
to get up". The dead man sat up and began to talk, and
Jesus gave him to his mother. Everyone was filled with awe and praised God
saying "A great prophet has appeared among us. God has visited his
people"
Jesus, please give me the faith to pray that
dead people will come back to life - you who once told your disciples

Isaiah 43-45: The Lord says:
Do not be afraid, for I have redeemed you.
I have called you by your name, you are mine. If you travel over the seas, I will be with
you.
If you travel on great rivers, I will protect you. For I am the Lord, your God,
the Holy One of Israel, your savior. They are ignorant, those who carry around an idol made of wood,
those who pray to a lump of wood that cannot hear. Turn to me and be saved

Psalm 126: When the Lord delivered Zion from bondage,
it seemed like a dream.
Then was our mouth filled with laughter,
on our lips there were songs. What marvels the Lord worked for us.
Indeed we were glad. Those who are sowing in tears
will sing when they reap. They go out, full of tears, carrying seed for
the sowing.
They come back, full of song, carrying their sheaves.

3.7-11: Because of Christ, I have come to consider
all my former advantages as a scholar as disadvantages. Nothing is more important than knowing Christ
Jesus my Lord. For him I have accepted the loss of
everything, and I look on everything as so much rubbish if only I can have
Christ. All I want is to know Christ and the power of
his resurrection.
I want to share his sufferings by carrying the Cross with him. This is the way I can hope to receive eternal
life.

John
8.1-11: While Jesus was teaching in the Temple, the
religious leaders brought to him a women who had been caught committing
adultery. The leaders said to Jesus "According to
the Law of Moses, this woman should be stoned to death. What do you
say?" They said this to test him, looking for something
to use against him. Jesus bent down and started writing on the
ground with his finger. Since they kept up their questioning, he looked up
and said to them "If there is one of you who has not sinned, let him
be the first to cast a stone". Then he kept writing on the ground. The leaders went away, beginning with the
eldest, until Jesus was left alone with the woman. Jesus said to her
"Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you? "No one, sir", she replied.
"Neither do I condemn you", said Jesus. "Go and don't sin
any more"
Jesus, what did you write on the ground? The
leaders' sins? "If you, O Lord, should write a record of our sins, who could
claim innocence?"

7.1-10: Jesus went to the town of Capernaum. In the

some Jewish friends to ask Jesus to come and heal his servant. The Jewish friends said to Jesus "He
deserves this of you. He is friendly to our people. He is the one who
built our prayer hall". Jesus went with them, but before they
reached the house the centurion sent some servants with the message
"Sir, I am not worthy to receive you into my house. This is why I
didn't come to you personally. Just say a word, and my servant will
be healed". When Jesus heard these words, he said to the
crowd following him
"I have not found faith as great as this man's". When the messengers got back to the house,
they saw that the servant was healed and in perfect health

you. Say but the word and I shall be healed" (prayer

Reflection on the above readings: "People who throw mud lose ground"
---------------------------
Usually at Lo Wu women's prison I sit at a table when I
visit each workroom .... and people come one by one. But yesterday I was running
late (after needing 3 hours to hand in items for prisoners and receive one hand
out from a prisoner) so I followed Plan B: no table/chairs ... stay standing ...
to encourage short chats only!
