Tues April 9

During meals over the past week I watched this video - an excellent summary of the famous Tang Dynasty period ... a time when the biggest country in Europe had a population of 3 million, while China had a population of 70 million: The Daming Palace &Tang Dynasty (618 - 907 AD) 唐朝大明宫

Last night I was privileged to be a guest at the HK launch of China in Life's Foreground, the autobiography of 96 year old Professor Audrey Donnithorne who was born in Sichuan, who is one of the world's greatest authorities on China ... and who was assisted in 1987 in HK by myself and two others to establish the NGO Aitece which has sent more than 400 teachers to China (with 19 in China this year). At the book launch I met a number of most interesting people, like Dr Helen Tinsley who in her retirement serves a HK University one-stop information network for special needs children, and Martin Alexander, Editor in Chief of Asia Literary Review (this last link will not open in IE)

My article in today's Ming Pao newspaper has the topic: A Great Wall to protect HK from Beijing. It's on Ming Pao website - click "Australian in HK". Text without recording

Readings are from Simple Bible

Tobit 1: Tobit was a Jewish exile living in the city of Nineveh in Assyria. Even though other Jewish exiles, even his own relatives, neglected their religion, Tobit stayed loyal to God. Tobit also cared for the poor and hungry. And he made a special practice of burying the  dead.
Dear God, please help me to be like Tobit: loyal to you and caring for the poor

My recording of this reading

Psalm 103: My soul, give thanks to the Lord. All my being, bless his holy name. My soul, give thanks to the Lord and never forget all his blessings. It is he who forgives all your guilt, who heals every one of your ills. It is he who fills your life with good things, renewing your youth like an eagle's life. The Lord is compassion and love, slow to anger and rich in mercy. As the heavens are high above the earth so strong is his love for those who love him. As far as the East is from the West, so far does he remove our sins. As a father has compassion on his children, the Lord has pity on all who love and honor him. Give thanks to the Lord, all his angels, who heed the voice of his word. Give thanks to the Lord, everyone and everything. My soul, give thanks to the Lord!
Thank you, Lord, for your love and compassion

Listen

Revelation 22.1-5: Then an angel showed me the River of Life, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb, flowing crystal-clear through the middle of the city. Here God's servants will worship him. They will see him face to face, and his name will be written on their foreheads. It will never be night again. They will not need lamplight or sunlight, because the Lord God will be shining on them
Jesus, may your name be written on my forehead

Listen

Luke 7.18-30: John the Baptist, imprisoned by King Herod, heard the news about Jesus.  John sent two of his friends to ask Jesus "Are you the promised One?" Jesus replied "Go and tell John what you have seen today: the blind see again, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised to life, and the Good News is proclaimed to the poor". Jesus then spoke to the people about John: "Everyone who accepted baptism from John acknowledged God's plan. But by refusing baptism from him, the religious leaders thwarted what God had in mind for them"
Jesus, please don't let me do anything to thwart your plan for my life

Listen

Reflection on the above readings: In today's world there's a need for more people like Tobit. May his example give us courage to stay loyal to God .... and to care for the poor.

Mon April 8

??? Last Thursday night I made a late visit to HK airport where I was allowed to give a little money to a man from South America who was being deported from HK after a charge of not renewing his HKID card was dropped against him ... and after he was tortured at a HK police station ... and after police visited him during one of his 5 subsequent hospital stays re metal that had been put into his stomach by police via a tube shoved down his throat. Last night I received an email from the man to say he is safely back in South America, so I can post this info .... including a short audio recording from HK airport - made on Thursday night as the man and I had a quick chat, surrounded by five male immigration officers, as he was being expelled from HK with only a few items of clothing in a plastic bag and not one cent to his name: here (YouTube)

Nehemiah 7-13: The wall of Jerusalem was finally rebuilt and doors were set in place in the wall. In the seventh month of the lunar calendar Nehemiah assembled all the people and read to them the Book of the Law of Moses. This was the first time that most of the people had heard the words of Moses' Book. The people were grateful to God and praised him with great happiness. The people also promised God that they would serve him more faithfully in the future. But while Nehemiah was away on a visit  to the king the people and leaders became careless about the Law. When  Nehemiah returned to Jerusalem he brought the people back to proper observance of the Law
Dear God, may we find joy and strength in reading the Bible and may the world have more good leaders like Nehemiah

Psalm 102: O Lord, listen to my prayer in my distress. Do not hide your face from me. For my days are vanishing like smoke,
my bones burn away like a fire. I forget to eat my bread. My skin clings to my bones. All day long my foes revile me. Those who hate me use my name as a curse. But you, O Lord, will endure for ever. You will arise and have mercy on Sion. You will hear the groans of the prisoners and free those condemned to die. I pray to you: "Do not take me away before my time has come, you whose days last from age to age.

Lord, please help people who are in great distress

Revelation 21.10-23: I saw the Holy City, the New Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven. It had God's glory, and glittered like a precious diamond. There was no temple in the city, since the Lord God and the Lamb were themselves the temple. The city did not need sun or  moon for light, since it was lit by the radiant glory of God and of the Lamb
Jesus, Light of the world, Light of Heaven, we adore you, Lord!

Listen

Luke 7.11-17: Jesus and his disciples went to a town called Nain.  Many other people went with them. As they reached the town, a dead man was being carried out for burial, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. When the Lord saw her, he felt sorry for her. "Do not cry" he said. Then he said "Young man, I tell you to get up". The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him to his mother. Everyone was filled with awe and praised God saying "A great prophet has appeared among us. God has visited his people"
Jesus, please give me the faith to pray that dead people will come back to life - you who once told your disciples "to raise the dead"

Yesterday morning I had a meeting to do with my anti-drug campaign, then after the usual 3pm monthly Mass at Queen Elizabeth Hospital for volunteers and special families, I visited the hospital's custodial ward and some open wards .... before getting a taxi to collect a 78 year old European man out on bail and taking him to Notre Dame College in Kowloon City for an O.M.I. meal ... all the while being greatly distracted by a most exciting game of football in Brisbane which the Lions won in the final few minutes

Isaiah 43-45: The Lord says: Do not be afraid, for I have redeemed you. I have called you by your name, you are mine. If you travel over the seas, I will be with you. If you travel on great rivers, I will protect you. For I am the Lord, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your savior. They are ignorant, those who carry around an idol made of wood, those who pray to a lump of wood that cannot hear. Turn to me and be saved all peoples of the world.
Lord, please help me be more aware of your protection each day and night

My recording of this reading

Psalm 126: When the Lord delivered Zion from bondage, it seemed like a dream. Then was our mouth filled with laughter, on our lips there were songs. What marvels the Lord worked for us. Indeed we were glad. Those who are sowing in tears will sing when they reap. They go out, full of tears, carrying seed for the sowing. They come back, full of song, carrying their sheaves.
Dear God, please bless all people who are sorrowful as they work

Philippians 3.7-11: Because of Christ, I have come to consider all my former advantages as a scholar as disadvantages. Nothing is more important than knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For him I have accepted the loss of everything, and I look on everything as so much rubbish if only I can have Christ. All I want is to know Christ and the power of his resurrection. I want to share his sufferings by carrying the Cross with him. This is the way I can hope to receive eternal life.
Christ Jesus my Lord, knowing you is No. 1

John 8.1-11: While Jesus was teaching in the Temple, the religious leaders brought to him a women who had been caught committing adultery. The leaders said to Jesus "According to the Law of Moses, this woman should be stoned to death. What do you say?"  They said this to test him, looking for something to use against him. Jesus bent down and started writing on the ground with his finger. Since they kept up their questioning, he looked up and said to them "If there is one of you who has not sinned, let him be the first to cast a stone". Then he kept writing on the ground. The leaders went away, beginning with the eldest, until Jesus was left alone with the woman. Jesus said to her "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you? "No one, sir", she replied. "Neither do I condemn you", said Jesus. "Go and don't sin any more"
Jesus, what did you write on the ground? The leaders' sins? "If you, O Lord, should write a record of our sins, who could claim innocence?"
(Psalm 130)

Luke 7.1-10: Jesus went to the town of Capernaum. In the town there was a Roman soldier, a centurion, who had a dear servant who has sick and close to death. Having heard about Jesus, the centurion sent some Jewish friends to ask Jesus to come and heal his servant. The Jewish friends said to Jesus "He deserves this of you. He is friendly to our people. He is the one who built our prayer hall". Jesus went with them,  but before they reached the house the centurion sent some servants with the message "Sir, I am not worthy to receive you into my house. This is why I didn't come to you personally.  Just say a word, and my servant will be healed". When Jesus heard these words, he said to the crowd following him "I have not found faith as great as this man's". When the messengers got back to the house, they saw that the servant was healed and in perfect health
"Jesus,  I am not worthy to receive you. Say but the word and I shall be healed"

Nehemiah 5: The people were very  poor and could not pay their debts. Therefore Nehemiah cancelled all debts owed by poor people. Nehemiah was a just and kind leader. He even used his own money to pay his expenses, and never took the salary that he could have claimed.

Psalm 100: Cry out with joy to the Lord, all the earth. Serve the Lord with gladness. Come before him, singing for joy. Know that he, the Lord, is God. He made us, we belong to him. We are his people, the sheep of his flock. Go within his gates, giving thanks. Enter his temple with songs of praise. Give thanks to him and bless his name. Revelation 21.1-4: Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth. The first heaven and the first earth had disappeared now, and there was no longer any sea. Here God lives among people. He will make his home among them. They shall be his people. He will be their God. His name is God-with-them. He will wipe away all tears from their eyes. There will be no more death, no more sadness. The world of the past has gone.

Luke 6.46-49: In his teaching, Jesus said "Why do you call me 'Lord', yet do not do what I ask you to do? But anyone who listens and does not put my words into practice is like a man who built his house without a foundation. As soon as floods came, the house collapsed"

Yesterday morning I once again came away sad from the High Court after a kind judge who usually gives generous discounts to defendants who have helped by anti-drug campaign was forcefully reminded by a prosecution barrister that last year's Court of Appeal ruling must strictly be followed: "Maximum of 3 months discount for help to campaign". Judge reluctantly complied.

Nehemiah 1-4: Nehemiah was cupbearer for the king of Persia. He heard how the Jews who had returned to Jerusalem were facing many difficulties. Nehemiah received permission from the king to go to Jerusalem and help rebuild the city. Nehemiah then supervised the re-building of Jerusalem's wall, even though some foreigners in Jerusalem made fun of him. When the workers were ridiculed by foreigners, Nehemiah said to the workers: "Do not be afraid of them. Just keep your mind on the Lord."

Yesterday I was at Lo Wu women's prison from 10am to 6pm. The last prisoner I met was a member of HK Catholic Diocese Justice and Peace Commission! She is serving a one month sentence for courageouly taking a stand against injustice in HK a few years ago ... followed by lengthy court cases. When I saw she was holding a book I asked her what was the book about, so she showed me the cover ... all in Chinese except the name of the author: Fr Ron Rolheiser O.M.I. (who gave the O.M.I. retreat in HK some years ago)!

Psalm 98: Sing a new song to the Lord for he has worked wonders. His right hand has brought salvation. The Lord has made known his salvation. He has shown his justice to the nations. He has remembered his truth and love for the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. Shout to the Lord all the earth, ring out your joy. Sing psalms to the Lord with the harp, with the sound of music. Let the sea, the world and all peoples acclaim the King, the Lord. Let the rivers clap their hands and the hills ring out their joy at the presence of the Lord, for he comes to rule the earth. He will rule the world with justice and the peoples with fairness.

Let us be glad and joyful, and give praise to God, because this is the time for the marriage of the Lamb". And an angel said "Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding feast of the Lamb"
