Tues April 16
Yesterday afternoon I received phone call from CIC (Castle Peak
Immigration Centre) from a man from India who has been at CIC since January when
he claimed asylum on arrival in HK .... after he paid HK$90,000 to an agency in
India to arrange his trip to HK ... with the false promise "you can work
illegally and make a lot of money in HK". I wonder if HK authorities have
made any effort to go after that agency? Or to do publicity in India to warn
people about such scams?
The above phone call was received while I was at a canteen having
a drink with two ex-inmates: a man who I had arranged to meet to give him a
support letter for a relative of his who will be on trial at the High Court
soon; the other a disturbed young women (affected by Ice ...) who had been
disoriented and shouting on a nearby street. Who do you turn to for help when
you come across a troubled person on the street in HK? In previous such cases I
have called the police but, while sympathetic, they can't do anything unless the
person is dangerous or has committed an offence. I hope the time will come when
police have the authority to commit such people to a period of safe confinement
with a compulsory medical examination. Safe confinement where? Prison? ... not
suitable or fair. Needs to be somewhere else.
Above canteen drink was while on way to visit the custodial ward of a local
hospital ... where I met yet another elderly foreigner tricked by Nigerian Drug
Lords in Johannesburg to go to J'burg and bring drugs to HK.
After the above three experiences I came home "with much to pray
about" as an O.M.I. colleague once said

c.f. readings for Tues of Holy Week. Let's
use these readings with Jesus ... they apply to him
Isaiah 46-49: The Lord called me before I
was born. From my mother's womb he knew my name. While I was thinking that I had
toiled in vain, all the while my cause was with the Lord. The Lord who formed me
in the womb and assigned me to rescue his people, that same Lord said to me:
"I will make you the light of the
nations, so that my salvation will reach to the ends of the earth"
Jesus, please help me understand how
these words refer to you
Psalm
71: In you, O Lord, I take refuge. Please
hear me and help me. Be a
rock where I can take refuge. Rescue me
from people
who want to hurt me. It
is you, O Lord, who are my hope. In you I have trusted since I was young. From
my mother's womb you have been my help. My hope has always been in you. Now that
I am old, please do not forget me. Now that my strength fails, do not abandon
me. To you I will sing with the harp. All day long my tongue will tell of your
goodness to me. Jesus, please help me
understand how these words refer to you
Recording

Luke
22.63-65: The men who were guarding
Jesus mocked him and beat him.
They blindfolded him. "Since you are a prophet", they said, "tell
us who hit you just then". And they continued heaping insults on him.
Jesus, please stop me from making offensive fun of other people
Recording

Luke
22.66 - 23.12: At daybreak there was a meeting
of the religious leaders. Jesus was brought before them. They asked him
"Are you the Son of God?". He replied "Yes". They said
"We have heard his blasphemy from his own lips". They took him to the
Roman governor, Pilate, and made many false accusations against him. Pilate said
"I find no case against him". Jesus was then taken to King Herod who
made fun of him and sent him back to Pilate.
Jesus, on trial before the leaders, before Herod and before Pilate, please help
all prisoners who are on trial today
Recording

Reflection
on the above readings: When someone makes fun of
us, we react, internally if not externally. Being made fun of is not a pleasant
experience. And most of us have to admit to having made fun of others. But human
hurt feelings pale into insignificance when compared with what Jesus must have
felt. The Creator of the Universe being ridiculed by creatures. A loving and
kind parent being ridiculed by a son or daughter .... only a faint image of what
happened 2,000 years ago this week.

Last night's gathering for the poor at Yau Ma Tei Catholic
Primary School was attended by many visitors: a student-parent-teacher group
from YMTCPS, a Legion of Mary group, a local NGO group, a large number of
kind volunteers serving more than 200 poor guests .... and an asylum
seeker family asking help to cope with increased rent. Oh, nearly forgot: Jesus
also was there! ... since whenever we help poor people we help him. Some photos
of last week's gathering are here

Isaiah 42: Here is my
servant whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom my soul delights. I have endowed
him with my spirit that he may bring true justice to the nations. He does not
cry out or shout aloud. He does not
extinguish the wavering flame. I have called him to serve the cause of
right, to open the eyes of the blind, to free captives from prison.
Jesus, Servant of the Father, you are the Saviour of the world.
My

Psalm
27: The Lord is my light and my help,
whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life, before whom shall I
shrink? Though an army encamp against me, even then would I trust. There is one
thing I ask of the Lord, for this I long: to live in the house of the Lord all
the days of my life. It is your face, O Lord, that I seek. Hide not your face. I
am sure I will see your goodness in the land of the living. Hope in the
Lord, hold firm and take heart. Hope in the Lord!
Jesus, may we pray this psalm in time of trial, just as you did

John
12.1-8: Six
days before the Passover, Jesus went to
Bethany, for a dinner at the home of Lazarus, Mary and Martha. Mary
put expensive ointment on Jesus' feet. Then she wiped his feet with her hair.
Judas Iscariot, the disciple who was going to betray Jesus, said "Why
wasn't this ointment sold and the money given to the poor?" He
said this not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief.
He was in charge of the moneybag and would steal from it. Jesus replied
"Leave her alone. She is anticipating and honoring my burial. Besides, the
poor will always be with you. But I will soon be gone".
Jesus, may we "anoint your feet" by serving the poor

Reflection on the above readings: We can wash Jesus' feet ... by serving him in the poor ... by real service of the real poor, not insincere lip-service like that of Judas.

c.f. readings for Palm Sunday
Isaiah 50: The
Lord has opened my ear to hear his message. The Lord has given me words to
proclaim his message. For my part, I made no resistance, neither did I turn
away. I offered my back to those who struck me, my cheeks to those who tore at
my beard. I did not protect my face from insult and
spittle. I set my face like
flint. The Lord will help me.
Jesus, please help me understand how these words refer to you
My
recording of this reading

Psalm 22: My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? I call to you for help, but day and night you give no reply. I am a worm and not a man. Everyone who sees me makes fun of me. They taunt me: "He trusted in the Lord, why doesn't the Lord help him?" Like water I am poured out, my bones no longer connected. My throat is parched, my tongue sticks to my jaws. Many evil people attack me. They make holes in my hands and my feet. They await my death. They divide my clothing among them, they throw a dice for my robe.
Yet I know Lord, that
you are good and holy. I know how you heard the cries of our ancestors and you
helped them. It was you who took me from the womb and entrusted me to my
mother's breast. To you I was committed from my birth, from my mother's womb you
have been my God. Lord, I trust in you even now. I trust you will not scorn my
prayer. Even now I praise you as my Creator. May all the nations know and
worship you.
Lord, please help people who are in big trouble right now, especially people
whose lives are in danger
Philippians 2.6-11: O Lord, unite us in your love and keep our minds in you. O Lord, unite us in your love and keep our minds in you. Though you were God in state divine you did not cling to what you were. No, you shed your glory's shine so as to live just like a slave. O Lord, unite us in your love and keep our minds in you. You came on earth in human form and you shared our troubled life. A humbler man there never was, even in death obedient. Yes, Lord, death upon a cross, yes, upon a cross.
Therefore are you raised on high and you have the name of names. At that name should bend the knee and tongue confess: Jesus Christ is LORD. And tongue confess that Jesus Christ is LORD. And tongue confess that Jesus Christ is LORD. To the glory of God the Father
Luke
19.28-40: When Jesus came near to Jerusalem, he
sent two disciples to a nearby village to get a donkey colt which no one
had ever ridden. Jesus sat on the colt and began the descent
from the Mount of Olives down the hill to Jerusalem. The disciples spread their clothes on
the road,
and joyfully praised God for all the miracles they had seen. They cried
out "Blessings on the King who comes in
the name of the Lord!" Some religious leaders told Jesus to stop the
disciples from calling out. Jesus replied "If these keep silence, the
stones will cry out"
Jesus, you who came in the name of the Lord,
we praise and love you

Tobit
12: When Tobit's banquet was finished,
Tobit wanted to thank Raphael for all his help. Only then did Raphael tell Tobit
and Tobias
that he was an angel sent by God to help them. "I am Raphael, one of the 7
angels who stand ever ready
to enter the presence of the glory of the Lord. Never tire of giving God thanks.
And never tire of helping the poor."
Raphael farewelled them, rose in the air, and left them.
They praised and thanked God for all he had done for them.

your love, all your blessings

Tobit
13: Tobit praised and thanked God in these words:
"Blessed be God who lives

Praise him for all his kindness to us. My soul rejoices in the King of
heaven.
Let his praise be sung in Jerusalem and in all nations."

Tobit
14:
Tobit was 62 when he went blind.
He died when he was 112. After he was cured of blindness,
he continued his custom of helping the poor. Before he died he said to Tobias:

Serve God sincerely, always be willing to help poor people." After Tobit and Anna died, Tobias

Tobit 8: Before Tobias went to bed with Sarah,
he remembered what Raphael had said. Tobias put some of the fish's heart and liver
on burning incense. The smell of the fish made Asmodeus flee.
Tobias with Sarah then prayed to the Lord:
"You are blessed O God of our fathers.
Let the heavens and all creatures bless you,
you who created Adam and Eve. I now take Sarah as my wife
not for any lustful reason, but out of true love. Please have pity on us
and bring us to old age together." Then they went to bed. Meanwhile
Raguel, who feared Tobias would die,
prepared a secret grave. But when Raguel sent a maid to the room of
Tobias and Sarah
the maid found they were alive and sleeping peacefully. Then Raguel too praised God:
"Thank you, my God, for making me happy.
What I feared has not happened." The next day Raguel prepared the customary 14
day wedding feast.
Dear God, thank you for the many times when we
could say
"What I feared has not happened"
My
recording of this reading
Tobit
9-10: Tobias arranged that Raphael go to Gabael
to collect the silver left by Tobit many years before. Gabael returned with Raphael to
Raguel's house
and joined the wedding feast. Realising that his parents would
be worried about him,
Tobias left for home as soon as the wedding feast was over. Raguel gave Tobias and Sarah half
his possessions
and prayed that he would see their children some day. A happy and grateful Tobias
thanked God
for all the blessings of his journey to Media
Dear God, thank you for all the blessings of my
life

Tobit
11: When Tobias returned home, his
parents were full of joy. Tobias followed Raphael's
instructions
and applied the fish gall to his blind father's eyes. Tobias then peeled away a filmy
skin from the eyes
and his father Tobit was able to see again. Tobit and Tobias joyfully
praised God. Tobit welcomed Sarah and held a
banquet for all his friends.
Dear God, please give sight to the blind people I
know,
just as you gave back sight to Tobit long ago

Luke
8.4-15: One day Jesus told the people this story:
A farmer was planting seeds in his field.
Some seeds fell on the path. Birds ate them. Some seeds fell on rocky ground.
They became sickly plants, without roots, and died. Some seeds fell among thorns.
When they became plants, they were choked by the thorns. Some seeds fell on good soil
and produced a rich harvest. People who hear God's word without good will
are like the seeds on the path.
They are easy prey for Satan. People who hear God's word only superficially
are like the seeds on rocky ground.
As soon as difficulties come, such people easily give up. People who hear God's word with one ear
but with the other are listening to the call of greed and pleasure
are like the seeds among thorns. Greed kills the word.
People who hear God's word with good will and
put it into practice
are like the good seeds which produced a rich harvest
Jesus, please help me be
good seed!

Tobit 4: Tobit said to his son Tobias:
"When I die give me an honorable burial.
Always honor your mother. When she dies, bury her at my side. Be faithful to the Lord all your days.
Always be willing to help poor people. Give your bread to those who are hungry
and your clothes to those who are naked. Ask advice of every wise person.
Bless the Lord God in everything. Beg him to guide your ways

know Raphael was an angel. On the first night of their journey, Tobias

the fish.
Raphael explained that the gall would cure the blindness of Tobit, and
that the liver and heart would drive away the demon Asmodeus.
Dear God, thank you for the
help we receive from your angels

Tobit 7: When Tobias and Raphael reached Media,
they went to the home of their relative Raguel, father of Sarah. Tobias asked Raguel for Sarah to be his wife.
Raguel told Tobias that 7 previous bridegrooms had died. Tobias repeated his request, and Sarah became
his wife.
That night everyone prayed for the safety of the

8.1-3: Jesus went to many towns and villages,
proclaiming the Good News.
The 12 apostles went with him, as did a group of women who had been healed
of evil spirits and sicknesses: Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Susanna and
several others.
These women used their own money to support Jesus and the apostles.
Jesus, thank you for all the women who support
the spread of the Good News in today's world

Reflection on the above Bible readings: Luke, a doctor always interested in health issues, stresses how the women who generously supported Jesus and the apostles had been healed by Jesus. This story has often been repeated over the centuries: people healed by God have become wonderful servants of the Good News.

Tobit 2-3: One night when Tobit was resting,
sparrow droppings fell into his eyes and he became blind.
Some people made fun of Tobit for his misfortune.
Tobit humbly entrusted his life to the Lord. At the same time as Tobit was praying,
Sarah was praying in the town of Media. Sarah had been given in marriage 7 times
but all of her bridegrooms had been killed by the demon Asmodeus
before the couple could make love. The Lord heard the prayers of Tobit and Sarah

Psalm
104: Bless the Lord, my soul!
Lord God, how great you are. You make the clouds your chariot.
You walk on the wings of the wind. You make springs gush forth in the valleys.
They give drink to all the animals of the field. You make grass grow for the cattle
and plants to provide food for people. You give us wine to cheer our hearts
and oil to make our faces shine. You made the moon to mark the months.
The sun knows the time for its setting. How many are your works, O Lord.
In wisdom you have made them all. The earth is full of your riches
and the sea is swarming with life. All things, great and small, look to you for
food.
You open your hand, they have their fill. You send forth your spirit, and life is
created.
You renew the face of the earth. I will sing to the Lord all my life.
May my thoughts be pleasing to him.
Bless the Lord, my soul!

7.36-50: A religious leader invited Jesus for a meal.
A woman who had a bad name heard that Jesus was at the leader's home.
She entered the house and knelt behind Jesus, crying. Her tears fell on
Jesus' feet and she wiped them away with her hair. She covered his feet
with kisses, and put ointment on them.
The leader was thinking "If Jesus is a prophet, he would know what
sort of woman is now touching him". So Jesus said to the leader "I

show great love
