Judith
9: Judith put ashes on her head, bowed with her
face to the ground,
and prayed urgently to God: "Lord God, help of the oppressed, support
of the weak,
please hear my prayer and protect your people Israel."
Dear God, help us to imitate
Judith
and pray to you with faith when we are in trouble

Psalm
113: Praise, O friends of the Lord,
praise the name of the Lord. May the name of the Lord be blessed
both now and for evermore. From the rising of the sun to its setting
praised be the name of the Lord. Who is like the Lord our God,
above the heavens his glory. From the dust he lifts up the lowly,
to put them in the company of royalty. To the childless wife he gives a home
and gladdens her heart with children.
May the Lord be praised from
sunrise to sunset

Acts
2.22-36:
Peter said to the crowd "You know that
Jesus of Nazareth was a man from God. You know all about the miracles he
worked. This same Jesus has been raised from the dead
by God. There are many witnesses to his resurrection. Jesus has been taken up to God's right hand.
He has received the Holy Spirit from the Father. He has poured out the Holy
Spirit on us. Know for sure that Jesus whom you crucified is
the Messiah and he is Lord".

Lord, please pour your Holy Spirit into my heart

Luke
8.40-56:
A prayer hall official came to Jesus and
urgently asked him to go to his house, where his 12 year old daughter was
dying.
As Jesus and his friends were following the official to his home,
a woman who had a hemorrhage for 12 years came up behind Jesus and touched
his clothing. Her bleeding stopped at that moment.
Jesus knew what had happened and said to her
"My daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace".
Before Jesus arrived at the official's house, a messenger arrived
and said to the official "Your daughter is dead. Do not trouble the
Master any more". Jesus heard these words and said to the
official "Do not be afraid. Have faith, and she will be ok". At the house Jesus allowed only Peter, James,
John and the girl's parents to go with him inside.
To the mourners Jesus said "Stop
crying.
She is not dead, but asleep".
They laughed at him, since they
knew she was dead.
Jesus took the little girl by the hand and called to her "Child, get
up". Her spirit returned and she got up at once.
Jesus, please increase my faith in your power to
heal sick people and raise the dead

Judith
8 :
Judith lived in Bethulia. She had been
a widow for 3 years.
She loved God, prayed all the time, and often fasted. When she heard about the situation of Bethulia
she encouraged the elders to keep on trusting God for
help.
Dear God, when life gets tough,
help us to keep trusting you

Psalm
112: Happy are people who love and honor the Lord,
who take delight in his commands.
The children of such people will be blessed. Such people are a light in the darkness for
others.
Such people are generous, merciful and just. They take pity and help those in need.
They conduct their affairs with integrity. Open-handed they give to the
poor.
Their justice and goodness will never be forgotten.
Lord, please help me do more
for the poor

Acts
2.11-18: When people heard the apostles' group
speaking in many different languages, some said the apostles were drunk. Peter stood up with the Eleven and said to the
crowd:
These people are not drunk. It's only 9am .... too early to drink.
What is happening is what God said through the prophet Joel: 'I, the Lord, will pour out my spirit on all
peoples. They will prophesy and see visions. I will pour out my spirit on
everyone'.
Come Holy Spirit, fall afresh on all peoples,
all nations

Luke
8.22-25: Jesus and his disciples got into a boat to
cross the lake. Jesus was so tired that he went to sleep in
the boat.
Then a sudden storm caused big waves to lash the boat. Jesus' friends woke him up and said
"Master, we are sinking". Jesus ordered the wind and sea to be
calm.
Straight away the wind and sea were calm. The disciples said to each other
"Who is this? Even the wind and sea obey
him."
Jesus, please calm the storms in my life

Sun April 28
Almost every day over the past week I have met and chatted with asylum seekers - mainly on the street. And most of them have young children, mainly babies. All have the same story: a losing battle to pay for rent and food on a deliberately too-low government allowance designed to persuade/force them to go back to their own countries. But how can you persuade a young couple with a baby to go back to Sri Lanka or Bangladesh or Congo? What should/can we do? What would Jesus do? Plan A: help them in their immediate needs. Plan B: lobby at the decision-making level for a more humane government policy.

c.f. readings for Easter 2
Acts 5.12-16: All the believers used to meet regularly in an
area of the Temple. Their numbers kept on increasing. So many miracles kept happening that sick
people were laid on beds on the street, in the hope that at least
Peter's shadow would cover them as he walked past. People came from the towns near Jerusalem,
bringing their sick,
and all of the sick were healed
Jesus,
let more healings take place in
our day
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
118: Give thanks to the Lord for he is good.
His love has no end. Let the sons of Israel say:
"His love has no end." Let those who honor the Lord say:
"His love has no end." It is better to take refuge in the Lord than
to trust in humans.
It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes. I was falling,
falling, falling,
but the Lord was my helper. The Lord is my strength and my song.
He is my saviour. The Lord's right hand has triumphed.
His right hand has raised me up. I shall not die, I shall live
and recount all his deeds. The stone which the builders rejected
has become the corner stone. This is the work of the Lord,
a marvel in our eyes. This day was made by the Lord.
We rejoice and are glad.
Lord, we give thanks to you,
for you are good.
Your love has no end

Rev
1.9-17:
I, John, share your sufferings. I was on the
island of Patmos, imprisoned for having preached about Jesus. One Sunday the
Spirit possessed me. I heard a
voice shouting
"Write down all you see, and send it to the seven churches of
Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea".
I turned to see who had spoken to me, and I
saw Jesus,
full of glory. His face was like the sun shining with all its force. He said to me "Do not be afraid.
It is I,
the First and the Last. I am the Living One"
Jesus, Living One, we praise and adore you,
Lord
Listen
John
20.21-29: That same Sunday evening, the doors were
locked in the room where the disciples had gathered, for fear of the
religious leaders. But Jesus appeared and stood before them,
saying "Peace be with you". He showed them his hands and his
side and said "As the Father sent me, so I am sending you". Then he breathed on them, saying "Receive the
Holy Spirit". Thomas, one of the 12 apostles, was not there
that night. When the other disciples said they had seen the Lord, he
replied "Unless I see and touch his wounded body, I refuse to
believe". Eight days later, the group was again in the
same house, with the doors locked. This time Thomas was with them. Jesus again appeared and stood before them
saying "Peace be with you". Then he said to Thomas "Put
your hand into my side. Doubt no longer, but believe". Thomas
replied "My Lord and my God!"
Jesus said "You believe because you can
see me. Blessed are those who have not seen me and yet believe"
Jesus, my Lord and my God, I believe in you.
Help me live and grow and die in your friendship

Reflection on the above readings: Each time we praise Jesus as our Lord and our God, we are reminded we belong to him and should honor him - just as a child belongs to its parents and should honour them .... and Jesus is reminded it's his job to help and protect us - just as parents have the job of helping and protecting their children. Especially when we enter a church and acknowledge Jesus in the tabernacle ...and at the Consecration ... and in Communion ... and as we leave the church ...let's use Thomas' words: My Lord and my God!

Judith
7: Holofernes laid siege against the Israelite
mountain town of Bethulia.
Holofernes seized control of Bethulia's water supply springs,
thinking that thirst would force the Israelites to surrender. For 34 days the siege continued, until the
people of Bethulia were weak from thirst. The people of Bethulia prayed hard to God for
help.
The leaders of Bethulia planned to hold out for 5 more days
before surrendering.
A feeling of hopelessness hung over the town.
God, help of the helpless, please help people who are in big trouble

111: I will thank the Lord with all my heart.
Great are the works of the Lord,
to be pondered by all who love him. His goodness stands firm for ever.
The Lord is compassion and love. His precepts are for all peoples and all

He is to be honored by all nations. To love and honor the Lord

Acts
2.1-4:
About ten days after Jesus' ascension to
heaven was the Feast of Pentecost. Jesus' 12 apostles, his mother,
several other women, and his brothers were together in one room. Suddenly they heard what sounded like a powerful wind. Tongues of
fire appeared and came to rest on the head of each of them. They were all filled with the Holy
Spirit, and began to speak
foreign languages

Mark
16.9-20: After he rose from the dead, Jesus appeared
first to Mary of Magdala, from whom he had cast out 7 devils. Next
he appeared to two of his disciples while they were on a journey. Then he appeared to the 11 apostles. He said
to them "Go everywhere in the world. Proclaim the Good News to all
creation.
Anyone who believes and is baptized, will be saved.
Anyone who refuses to believe, will be condemned.
These are the signs that will be associated with believers:
- in my name they will cast out devils
- they will have the gift of tongues
- they will pick up snakes in their hands
- they will be unharmed if they drink poison
- they will lay their hands on the sick, who will be healed".
And so, the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to
them, was taken up to heaven, while they, going out, preached everywhere,
the Lord working with them and confirming their message by the miracles that
accompanied the message
Lord Jesus, may more and more
people all over the world believe in you

21.1-14: Jesus also appeared to the disciples at the
Sea of Galilee, when Peter, John and 5 other disciples were fishing. They
had spent all night in their boat, but had caught nothing. In the morning, Jesus stood on the shore,
though the disciples did not recognize him. He called out "Lower your
net on the right side of the boat". Immediately the net filled with fish. John
realized that the man on the shore was Jesus. John said to Peter "It
is the Lord", and they returned to the shore, which was only about
100 meters away. The net had 153 big fish, but did not break. Jesus had prepared some bread. He also had
some fish cooking on a charcoal fire. He said "Come and have
breakfast".

you, 153 fish. Please help me be more aware of your presence in my life

For today's Feast of St. Mark
Mark 14.48-52: Jesus
said to them "Am I a robber that you needed to capture me with swords and
clubs? Day after day I was openly teaching in the Temple". All the apostles
then deserted him and ran away. A
young man who followed Jesus had nothing
on but a linen cloth. They caught hold of him, but he left the cloth in their
hands and ran away naked.

Acts 15.36-40: Some
time after this, Paul said to Barnabas "Let's revisit the towns where we
preached the word of the Lord". Barnabas suggested taking John
Mark with them, but Paul opposed this,
since John Mark had deserted them on the previous trip when the situation became
dangerous. After a violent argument, Paul and Barnabas split up. Barnabas went

Acts
1.12-14: After Jesus went up to heaven from the Mount
of Olives, the apostles went back down to Jerusalem, a walk of about half
a kilometer. They gathered in an upstairs room which they used as
a meeting place. The 11 apostles were Peter, John, James, Andrew, Philip,
Thomas, Bartholomew, Matthew, James son of Alphaeus, Simon and Jude. They spent a long time
praying. With them were
several women, including Mary the mother of Jesus, and also Jesus'
brothers.

Luke
24.13-35: That same day, two of Jesus' disciples were
on their way from Jerusalem to the village of Emmaus, about 7 km from
Jerusalem. As they talked about all that had happened,
Jesus himself joined them as they walked along. But they did not recognize
him. When Jesus asked them what they were talking
about, they said "About Jesus of Nazareth, and how our
leaders had him crucified. And how some women in our group went to Jesus'
tomb and were told by angels that he was alive". Jesus then explained the Scripture passages
which predicted his suffering and resurrection. Jesus joined the two men for an evening meal.
During the meal,
he blessed some bread and gave it to them. They then
recognized him. But he immediately vanished from their sight. They said to each other "Did not our
hearts burn within us as he talked to us on the road and explained the
Scriptures to us?" Straight away they returned to Jerusalem where
the eleven apostles said to them "Yes, it is true. The Lord has
risen". Then they told their story of what had
happened on the road, and how they had recognized Jesus at the
breaking of bread
