Judith 14-16: At daybreak the Jews attacked the Assyrian camp. When the Assyrians realized that Holofernes was dead, they panicked and fled. The Jews gave thanks to God for all that Judith had done. Judith praised the God of Israel for rescuing the Jews: "Lord you are great, you are glorious, wonderfully strong, unconquerable. May all peoples love and serve you."
Dear God, thank you for the story of Judith. Please help me imitate her faith

My recording of this reading

Psalm 119: They are happy who follow God's word, those who seek God with all their hearts. How can young people avoid evil? By seeking you and obeying you, Lord. Open my eyes, Lord, that I may understand the beauty of your word. Lord, when I'm worried or in trouble, your word revives me and gives me strength. Lord, keep my eyes from what is false. Bend my heart to your word and not to love of gain. The word from your mouth means more to me than silver and gold. The unfolding of your word gives light and teaches simple people.
Lord, thank you for your word which gives peace to our hearts

Listen

Acts 4.13-22: The religious leaders were astonished that two uneducated men like Peter and John could speak so confidently. The leaders also realized that a miracle had taken place: the crippled man was standing next to  Peter and John. The leaders gave Peter and John a formal legal warning not to speak in future about Jesus. Peter and John replied "Which is right? To obey you, or obey God? We cannot stop proclaiming what we have seen and heard". The leaders released the two apostles. They were afraid to punish them since all the people were giving glory to God for the miracle that had happened
Jesus, please help me obey you always

Listen

Luke 9.22-25: Jesus now began explaining to his disciples how he would suffer, die and rise from the dead. He also said "If you want to be my disciple, you must deny yourself, take up your own cross, and follow me. Selfishness will ruin your life. Self-sacrificing will bless your life. What use is it to have everything in this world yet miss out on Heaven?"
Jesus, please help me find my life by losing it in service of others

Welfare at one prison unable to phone inmate's family to let them know he was being transferred to another prison. Yesterday I was able to make a phone call ... to inmate's girl friend. When I said her BF was going to Tai Lam she asked where was that (she's from Indonesia). I said "near Tuen Mun ... there's a men's prison and a women's prison there". She replied in all seriousness "Does that mean my BF will be with women prisoners?"!

Judith 13: When the banquet was over at a late hour, Judith was alone with Holofernes in his tent. Holofernes lay drunk on his bed. After praying to God for strength, Judith used Holofernes' sword to cut off his head. She went outside and gave the head to her maid. Her maid put the head in her bag. Judith and her maid then left the camp as they usually did when they went to pray early in the morning. They went straight to Bethulia and showed Holofernes' head to the people. The people were overcome with joy and praised God for what he had done by the hand of a woman.
Dear God, please give people the courage to confront injustice

My recording of this reading

Psalm 118: Give thanks to the Lord for he is good. His love has no end. Let the sons of Israel say: "His love has no end." Let those who honor the Lord say: "His love has no end." It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in humans. It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes. I was falling, falling, falling, but the Lord was my helper. The Lord is my strength and my song. He is my saviour. The Lord's right hand has triumphed. His right hand has raised me up. I shall not die, I shall live and recount all his deeds. The stone which the builders rejected has become the corner stone. This is the work of the Lord, a marvel in our eyes. This day was made by the Lord. We rejoice and are glad.
Lord, we give thanks to you, for you are good. Your love has no end

Acts 4.1-12: While Peter was talking to the crowd, some religious leaders and soldiers came and arrested Peter and John. The next day the leaders held a meeting and asked the prisoners: "By what power and by whose name did you heal the crippled beggar?" Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, replied "The cripple is able to stand up perfectly healthy because he was healed by Jesus the Nazarene, the one you crucified, whom God raised from the dead. Salvation comes no other way. Only by the name of Jesus can we be saved".
Jesus, your name means "God
saves", you are indeed the Saviour of the world

Luke 9.18-21: One day Jesus asked his disciples "Who do people say I am?" The disciples replied "Some people say you are one of the famous prophets come back to life". Jesus then asked them "And what about you. Who do you say I am?" Peter answered "You are the Anointed One of God".

Sun May 5

Yesterday after the usual monthly Mass at Queen Elizabeth Hospital for volunteers and for mourning families, I visited the hospital's custodial ward and also one prisoner in an open ward. Then I used a taxi to collect an elderly prisoner on bail ... for a meal at Notre Dame in Kowloon City ... with another taxi to take him back to the place where he is staying .... the whole afternoon being greatly distracted by a football match in Brisbane where my team the Lions defeated the Sydney Swans (for the first time in 10 years!)

Happy Ramadan:

c.f. readings for Easter 3

Acts 5.21-23: When the leaders had their big meeting later that same morning, they sent for the apostles to be brought from prison. The police went to the prison, then came back and reported to the leaders "We found that the prison was properly locked, and the guards were on duty. But when we unlocked the door, there was no one inside". Then a man arrived at the meeting with the news "At this very moment, the men you imprisoned are now in the Temple preaching to the people". The police again arrested the apostles and brought them to the meeting. When the main religious leader reminded them of his previous warning not to preach, Peter and the apostles replied "Obedience to God comes before obedience to men. God raised Jesus up to be the Savior. We are witnesses to this, we and the Holy Spirit whom God gives to those who obey him". This made the leaders so angry that they wanted to kill the apostles.
Jesus, please help me put obedience to you before all other obediences

Psalms 29-30: The Lord gives us strength, the Lord blesses us with peace. Thank you, Lord, for so often helping and healing me. I cried to you when sickness surrounded me, and you healed me. You changed my mourning into dancing. So I will thank you always.
Thank you, Lord, for all the times you have healed me

Listen

Revelation 5.11-14: I heard the sound of an immense number of angels gathered around God's throne. There were 10,000 times 10,000 of them, shouting: "The Lamb that was sacrificed is worthy  to be given power, riches, wisdom, strength, honor, glory and blessing". I heard all living things in creation - angels, people, animals - crying out: "To the One sitting on the throne and to the Lamb, be all praise, honor, glory and power for ever and ever"
"Thou are worthy, Thou art worthy, Thou are worthy O Lord, to receive glory, glory and honor, glory and honor and power"

Listen

John 21.1-14: Jesus also appeared to the disciples at the Sea of Galilee, when Peter, John and 5 other disciples were fishing. They had spent all night in their boat, but had caught nothing. In the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, though the disciples did not recognize him. He called out "Lower your net on the right side of the boat". Immediately the net filled with fish. John realized that the man on the shore was Jesus. John said to Peter "It is the Lord", and they returned to the shore, which was only about 100 meters away. The net had 153 big fish, but did not break. Jesus had prepared some bread. He also had some fish cooking on a charcoal fire. He said "Come and have breakfast"
Jesus, Risen Lord, without you, no fish. With you, 153 fish. Please help me be more aware of your presence in my life

Listen

Reflection on the above readings: Not just a few fish, but 153. So, same reflection as yesterday: Whether it was changing water to wine or multiplying loaves and fish, Jesus was the opposite of stingy

Sat May 4

Yesterday I was at Lai Chi Kok men's prison for about 7 hours, with the final hour spent in the prison's hospital section which is most professionally staffed by CSD officers who are trained nurses. Each of HK's prison has its own hospital section. Only difference between men's and women's prisons is that the latter have a maternity section!

Judith 12: Holofernes allowed Judith and her maid to stay in a special tent each night, and each morning to go to a spring near Bethulia to wash and pray. After 3 days, Holofernes held a banquet for his staff. He invited Judith to the banquet with the aim of seducing her. Holofernes was so captivated by Judith's beauty that he kept on drinking wine until he was drunk. All the while Judith kept praying to God for strength and help.

Acts 3.9-16: When people saw the former crippled man walking, they couldn't believe their eyes. So Peter said to them "Why are you so surprised? Do you think John and I made this cripple walk? It is by our faith in Jesus that this man has been restored to health. Jesus is the Holy One, the Just One, the Prince of Life whom you handed over to Pilate for crucifixion. But God raised him from the dead

Luke 9.10-17: Once after Jesus had been healing and teaching all afternoon,  his disciples said to him "It's getting late and the people need to go and eat". Jesus answered "They don't need to go. You feed them". The disciples replied "We have only 5 loaves and 2 fish". Jesus got the people to sit on the grass. There were about 20,000 of them. Then he blessed the loaves and fish. He handed the loaves and fish to his disciples. His disciples gave them to the crowd. Everyone had plenty to eat. They even had 12 baskets of leftovers.

Fri May 3

Yesterday was a prisoner message day for me: in the morning I went to nearby Queen Elizabeth Hospital to collect a prisoner's medical report ... then on the way home went to a bookstore for something for a prisoner .... then from a photo shop collected some family photos for an African woman starting a long prison sentence (see menu of May 1, below). Photos from a W/App message sent to me by her husband in Nigeria. In the afternoon I went to the Open University of HK for the course registration of a prisoner, then to the Chinese University of HK office in Tsim Sha Tsui for a similar registration .... stopping for a while on the way home at Rosary Church where I seemed to hear Jesus say: "I was in prison .... and you went on messages for me"

Judith 11: Judith was very clever when she spoke to Holofernes. She told him that the Jews would be abandoned by God if they broke God's laws. She said that the Jews planned to break God's laws in a few days by eating consecrated foods. She said she would monitor the situation each day and let Holofernes know when the Jews were abandoned by God and ready to be attacked by Holofernes. Judith's words and beauty won over Holofernes and his staff and they agreed to her suggestions.
Dear God, please give us wisdom and tact for dealing with difficult people

My recording of this reading

Psalm 116: I love the Lord for he has heard the cry of my appeal. He turned his ear to me in the day when I called him. They surrounded me, sorrow, distress and the snares of death. I was helpless, so the Lord saved me. Calm down my soul, for the Lord has been good. I will walk in the presence of the Lord in the land of the living. How can I repay the Lord for his goodness to me? The cup of salvation I will raise to thank the Lord. O precious in the eyes of the Lord is the death of his faithful. Lord, you have loosened my bonds. I am your servant.
Thank you, Lord, for all your goodness to me

Acts 3.1-10: One afternoon about 3pm, Peter and John went to the Temple for prayer. A beggar asked them for money. He was crippled from birth. Peter said to him "I don't have any silver or gold. But I do have something to give you: in the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, get up and walk!" Peter then took him by the hand and helped him to stand up. Immediately, his feet and ankles became firm and he could walk. He was so happy he started jumping around. He went into the Temple, praising God
Jesus, there are so many crippled people in the world. Please heal them

John 1.35-51 (for Feast of Sts Philip & James, apostles): John the Baptist told his disciples Andrew and John that Jesus was the Chosen One of God.  Andrew and John then followed Jesus. Andrew took his brother Simon to Jesus. Jesus changed Simon's name to Peter, and Peter followed Jesus. Jesus met Philip and said to him "Follow me".  Philip called one more man, Nathanael (Bartholomew) and said to him "we have found the one Moses and the prophets wrote about. He is Jesus, son of Joseph, from Nazareth".
Jesus, please help me introduce more people to know and love you

Psalms 114-115: When Israel came out of Egypt, Jacob's descendents from an alien people, Judah became the Lord's temple,
Israel became his kingdom. Descendents of Israel, trust in the Lord. He is our help and our shield. To you may the Lord grant increase, to you and all your children. May you be blessed by the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth

Acts 2.37-47: The crowd was deeply moved by Peter's words, and asked "What should we do?" Peter replied "You must repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then you too will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit". That day about 3,000 people were baptized. These remained faithful to the teaching of the apostles, to a life of sharing and caring, to the Breaking of Bread, and to prayer. Many miracles were worked by the apostles, and this made a deep impression on everyone. Each day the Lord added new members to their group

Re L. Day yesterday I learnt a few things from Google:
Labor vs. Labour: There is no difference in meaning between labor and labourLabor is the preferred spelling in American English, and labour is preferred throughout the rest of the English-speaking world. One exception: In Australia, the American spelling is used in reference to the Australian Labor Party. The ALP adopted the formal name "Australian Labour Party" in 1908, but changed the spelling to "Labor" in 1912 ... influenced by the United States labor movement ... and a prominent figure in the early history of the party, the American-born King O'Malley, was successful in having the spelling "modernised". (ALP = American Labor Party?!)

c.f. readings for St Joseph the Worker (For International Labor Day)

Genesis 1-2: God made the world. God made  the sun, the moon and the stars....the whole universe. God said "Let there be light" and there was light. God made the earth with all its plants and trees and animals and fish and birds. God made the first people.....the first man and first woman. God made them in his own image and said to them "Be fruitful, multiply and fill the earth." God saw all that he had made, and all of it was good, very good.
Dear God, thank you for making such a beautiful world!

My recording of this reading

Psalm 90: O Lord you have been our refuge from one generation to the next. Before the earth or the world existed, you are God, without beginning or end. For you, a thousand years are like yesterday, come and gone so quickly. We humans have a short life, our life is over like a sigh. Our span is 70 years, or 80 for those who are strong. Make us know the shortness of our life, that we may gain wisdom of heart. In the morning, fill us with your love. Give success to the work of our hands.
Lord, help us realize the shortness of our life,  that we may live our lives more wisely

Recording

Colossians 3.18 - 4.1: Wives and husbands, understand and support each other. Children, be obedient to your parents. Parents, treat your children fairly or else they will rebel. Slaves, be obedient and respectful to your owners. Offer up your work to the Lord, our Heavenly Owner. Owners, be just and fair to your slaves. Remember your Heavenly Owner.
Jesus,  help families to live together in harmony

Recording

Matthew 13.53-58: One day Jesus went to Nazareth, his home town. In the prayer hall there he taught the local people. But the local people would not accept him.  They said "Where did he get such wisdom and miraculous power? He is just a carpenter's son. His mother is that woman called Mary. His brothers are James, Joseph, Simon and Jude. His sisters are here, too.  He's nobody special." Jesus said to them "A prophet is despised only in his own country and his own house". And he did not work many miracles there because of their lack of faith.
Jesus, please give me more faith in you .... and don't let me reject people

Recording

Reflection on the above readings: On this International Workers/Labor Day, may the example of the carpenter whom Jesus called "father" help us to offer up our work as a prayer to the Lord ... like a woman who used to pray "Jesus, I don't really like washing and ironing, but I offer it up as a prayer asking that you would keep my family safe".
