I
spent yesterday afternoon at Lai Chi Kok men's prison where I was sad to meet a
new drug mule from Malaysia, but happy to meet an old friend back for a medical
check up - a Tanzanian man who was at LCK in the days when there were 30 (!)
Tanzanians there who had been arrested at HK airport ... while today there is
not one....thanks to the anti-drug campaign and outstanding work by the
authorities in Tanzania. I hope the Malaysian authorities will follow the
example of their counterparts in Tanzania!

Esther
6-8: On the night between the two banquets, the
king could not sleep.
To induce sleep he started reading the history of his kingdom. He read how some years ago two of his eunuchs
planned to assassinate him, but the plot was foiled by Mordecai. The king asked Haman how to honor a man whom
the king wished to honor. Haman thought the king was talking about
himself, Haman, so
he suggested royal clothes, a royal horse and a royal parade. The king agreed and told Haman to honor
Mordecai in this way.
This was a great humiliation for Haman.
And it got even worse for Haman. At the second banquet, Esther told the
king that she was Jewish and that Haman planned to
kill all Jews.
The result: Haman was hanged on the gallows which he had prepared for
Mordecai, and the Jews were not only spared annihilation - they were given
places of honor in the kingdom. The
Jews praised God for all his help through Mordecai.
Dear God, please stop people
like Haman from committing injustice

Psalm
126: When the Lord delivered Zion from bondage,
it seemed like a dream.
Then was our mouth filled with laughter,
on our lips there were songs. What marvels the Lord worked for us.
Indeed we were glad. Those who are sowing in tears
will sing when they reap. They go out, full of tears, carrying seed for
the sowing.
They come back, full of song, carrying their sheaves.
Dear God, please bless all
people who are sorrowful as they work

Acts
1.15-26:
(for Feast of St Matthias):
During these days, Peter spoke to a group of about 120 disciples:
"As you know, Judas hanged himself after betraying Jesus. We must now
choose someone to take Judas' place, someone who has been with us since
the time when John was baptizing". Two men were nominated, Joseph and
Matthias.
After prayer was offered, Matthias was chosen. He was listed as one of the
12 apostles.
Jesus, please protect your church from
betrayal and disloyalty

Luke
10.29-37:
The religious leader then asked another
question: "Who is my neighbor?" Jesus replied "A man on a journey was
attacked by robbers. They beat him, took all he had, and left him
seriously injured. A priest came by and saw the man, but did not help
him. A temple worker also saw him, but did not help. But a lowly foreigner
who saw him was moved with pity. The foreigner bandaged his wounds, and used
his own donkey to take the man to an inn. He paid the innkeeper to look
after the man. Which of the three was a neighbor to the
injured man?" The leader replied "The one who
helped him". Jesus then said "Go, and do the same"
Jesus, please don't let me ignore people who
need help
Listen

Reflection on the above readings: When Matthias was not chosen in the original 12, he didn't go away in a sulk. When most of Jesus' disciples left him because they could not accept the Bread of Life teaching, Matthias did not go away. He continued to follow Jesus

Esther
5: After Esther prayed to God for a long time,
she went to the palace and presented herself to the king. At first the king was angry that
Esther came without being invited,
but then his heart softened and he
welcomed her. When King Ahasuerus saw that
Esther was distressed,
he asked her what was wrong. He promised to do anything for her. Esther asked that there be two
special banquets for herself,
the king and Haman. The king agreed and the banquets were arranged. Haman meanwhile was making his
own arrangements:
a high gallows on which to hang Mordecai.

Acts
5.34-42: One religious leader at the meeting,
Gamaliel,
asked that the apostles be removed from the room. Then he spoke to the
other leaders: "Men of Israel, be careful how you deal
with these people. If this movement of theirs is of human origin, it will
die out of its own accord. But if it comes from God, you will not be able
to destroy it. You might even find yourselves fighting against God".
His advice was accepted. The apostles were
warned, flogged and released. They left the meeting glad to have had the
honor of suffering humiliation for the sake of Jesus. They resumed their
daily preaching, in the Temple and in private homes
Jesus, thank you for times
of suffering for you
Listen

Luke
10.25-28: To test Jesus, a religious leader asked him
in public "Master, what must I do to inherit eternal life?" Jesus replied "What does the Law
say?" He replied "You must love the Lord your
God with all your heart, and you must care for others as much as you care about yourself".
"You are correct", said
Jesus, "do this and life is yours".
Jesus, help me to love you with all my
heart....and to care for others as much as I care about myself

Reflection on the above readings: Physically we obey the Law of Gravity. Spiritually, in our DNA, there is a gravitational force urging us to obey the Law of Love. According to the great French scientist, Pierre de Chardin, we are being drawn to a Divine Magnet, Jesus, who is Love.

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!
HK legislature is beginning to look like that of Taiwan where fights sometimes
happen:
More
chaos as rival groups clash (check the video!)
So many places in the world - including HK - are experiencing a leadership crisis ... people have lost confidence in leaders ... because so many leaders are more concerned with power/wealth/fame than about their people. Today's readings for Good Shepherd Sunday remind us that real leadership - in government/church/organisation/family - is all about concern for the sheep. Real concern is like that of a mother for her baby: total focus on the good of the baby.

c.f. readings for Easter 4
Acts 13.13-52: Paul and Barnabas went to another Antioch,
Antioch in Pisidia.
Out of jealousy, the local Jewish leaders there stopped Paul from preaching to
the Jewish community. Paul and Barnabas then turned their attention to non-Jewish
people, and so the word of the Lord spread through the whole countryside.
But the Jewish leaders kept up their campaign,
and had Paul and Barnabas expelled from Pisidia.

Psalm
100: Cry out with joy to the Lord, all the earth.
Serve the Lord with gladness.
Come before him, singing for joy. Know that he, the Lord, is God. He made us, we
belong to him.
We are his people, the sheep of his flock. Go within his gates, giving thanks.
Enter his temple with songs of praise.
Give thanks to him and bless his name. Indeed, how good is the Lord,
eternal his merciful love.
He is faithful from age to age.
Dear Lord, please help us to
serve you with gladness

Revelation
7.9-17:
I saw a huge number, impossible to count, of
people from every nation, race, and language. They were standing in front of the throne,
with palms in their hands.
They shouted: "Victory to our God,
who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb". One of the elders told me who these people
are:
"These are the people who have been through the great persecution.
They now serve God day and night in his sanctuary. The Lamb is their
Shepherd. He leads them to springs of living water. God has wiped away all
tears from their eyes".
Jesus, please help sorrowing people who are
crying today
Listen

John
10.11-14:
Jesus said to the religious leaders "I am
the Good Shepherd.
The Good Shepherd is one who lays down his life for his sheep. A hired man,
since he has no real concern for
the sheep,
abandons them and runs away if he sees a wolf coming. I am the Good Shepherd.
I know my own sheep, and my own sheep know me"
Jesus,
Good Shepherd, please help me to be a
good sheep, and a good shepherd

Esther
4: When Mordecai heard about Haman's plan,
Mordecai asked Esther to appeal to Ahasuerus for help. Mordecai and Esther both knew that to approach
the king
without an invitation was a crime punishable by death,

Ahasuerus to welcome Esther.

Psalm
124: "If the Lord had not been on our
side",
this is Israel's song. If the Lord had not been on our side
when people rose against us, then would they have swallowed us alive
when they were angry with us. Blessed be the Lord who did not let us become
a prey for their teeth. Our life, like a bird, has escaped
from the snare of the hunter. Indeed the snare has been broken
and we have escaped. Our help is in the name of the Lord
who made heaven and earth.

they said, "even the devils submit to us when we use your name".
Jesus replied "Yes, I have given
you power to tread underfoot the whole strength of the enemy. Yet do not rejoice that the spirits submit to
you. Rejoice rather that your names are written in heaven. Blessed are the eyes that see what you
see.
For I tell you that many prophets and kings wanted to see what you see,

Esther 3:
About this time Haman from the land of Agag
was promoted by King Ahasuerus to a top position. All other officials were
to bow and prostrate themselves before Haman. Mordecai refused to bow to
Haman. This made
Haman very angry.
Haman found out that Mordecai was a Jew.
Haman decided to kill Mordecai and all Jews in the kingdom. Ahasuerus agreed to Haman's plan
and a decree to this effect was announced:
all Jews were to be killed on the 14th day of the 12th month.

Psalm
123:
To you have I lifted up my eyes,
you who dwell in the heavens. My eyes, like the eyes of slaves
on the hand of their lords. Like the eyes of a servant on the hand of her

so our eyes are on the Lord our God till he show us mercy. Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy.

Acts 5.12-16:
All the believers used to meet regularly in an
area of the Temple. Their numbers kept on increasing. So many miracles kept happening that sick
people were laid on beds on the street, in the hope that at least
Peter's shadow would cover them as he walked past. People came from the towns near Jerusalem,
bringing their sick,
and all of the sick were healed
Jesus,
let more healings take place in
our day
Listen
Luke
10.1-9: Jesus appointed 72 disciples to go ahead of
him in pairs, to all the towns and places he himself was to visit. He said to them "The harvest is rich, but
the laborers are few, so ask the Lord of the harvest to send laborers to
his harvest. When you go into a town, cure those in it who
are sick, and say: 'The kingdom of God is very near to you'".
Jesus, please inspire more people to make the
spreading of the Good News their life's work
Listen

Reflection on the above Bible readings: Some people say that miracles of healing were just to help Christianity get started ... a temporary arrangement just for a time ... but a record of healings through the centuries shows that the healing ministry is meant to have a basic place in all Christian ministry

Luke 9.28-36: One day Jesus took his disciples Peter, James

On the mountain, while Jesus was praying, his whole appearance

and spoke with Jesus. Peter said to Jesus "Lord, how good it is for
us to be here!" Then a bright cloud covered them with its
shadow.
From the cloud came a voice:
"This is my Son, the Beloved. Listen to him"
