Jesus and the Dead Sea
Scrolls - Dr Craig Evans
On this day in 1861, in Marseilles, a French bishop died at the age of 78. He
had been born into an aristocratic family which was forced to flee from the
French Revolution. His family went to Italy as refugees. His parents had an
unhappy marriage and eventually divorced. In Italy the young Eugene de Mazenod
had an overpowering experience of the love of Jesus on the Cross. Eugene became
a priest and dedicated himself to serving the poorest parts of French society
such as prisoners and domestic servants. To further his work he joined with
other priests to form a new congregation in the Church. The group came to be
known as the Oblates of Mary Immaculate.
Today the Oblates have around 4,000 members working for the poor in most
countries of the world. Saint
Eugene de Mazenod, pray for us!

Maccabees 7: Some Jews who were disloyal to Judas
joined
with supporters of the new king, Demetrius, to plot the overthrow of
Judas. Nicanor, one of the king's generals, was sent
to defeat Judas
and exterminate the Jews. But when the battle took place, Nicanor
himself died and his army was routed. Once again the land experienced peace
for a
while.
Dear God, please protect us

Psalm
135: Praise the name of the Lord,
praise him, servants of the Lord. Praise the Lord for he is good.
Sing a psalm to his name for he is loving. I know the Lord is great. He does whatever he
wills
in heaven, on earth, in the seas. Pagan idols are silver and gold,
the work of human hands.
They have mouths but they cannot speak.
They have eyes but they cannot see. Sons of Israel, do not trust in useless idols.
Sons of Aaron, trust only in our Creator and Lord.
Dear Lord, please help people
who worship idols to know and love you

Acts
8.14-17:
The apostles in Jerusalem heard that people
in Samaria had accepted the word of God. Peter and John went to Samaria
to pray for the Samaritans to receive the Holy Spirit. So far the Samaritans had only been baptized
in the name of the Lord Jesus. The
Holy Spirit had not come down on them. When Peter and John prayed over them with the
laying on of hands, the Samaritans received the Holy Spirit

Luke
12.16-21:
Jesus told the people this story: There was a
rich man who, having had a good harvest from his land, thought to himself
"What am I to do? I don't have enough room to store my
crops". Then he said to himself "This is what I will do: I will pull down my
barns and build bigger ones, and store all my grain in them, and I will
say to my soul: My soul, you have plenty of good things laid by for many
years to come; take things easy, eat, drink, and have a good time". But God said to him "Fool! This very
night your earthly life will come to an end. And all your possessions, who
will get them?"
So it is when people store up treasure for themselves, instead of making themselves rich in the sight of God
Jesus, please help me to be satisfied with
what I have, and not to be greedy

As the Australian media pours forth articles about why Labor lost
and the Liberals won last Saturday's General
Election ... and why poll/media predictions were so mistaken ... I remember
the same thing happened when Tony Abbot unexpectedly won a General Election in
2013. I can't find it, but I remember one 2013 post-election ABC article saying
how the media has lost contact with the views of so many ordinary people ....
and another 2013 article saying that the media was not accurately reflecting
people's views but pushing/promoting its own agenda and saying that "its
agenda" was "what people think".... trying to influence rather
than accurately report people's views.

Maccabees 5-6: As the years went on, several nearby
countries made war
on Israel. But Judas and his followers used prayer and courage
to defeat all enemies. When King Antiochus heard of Judas' continued
victories,
he became severely depressed and realized he was dying. The king's son succeeded him and he too sent a

8.4-8: The believers who escaped from Jerusalem went

having a dirty heart full of extortion and wickedness. At meetings and in the market, you like being

that people walk on without knowing it. You expect ordinary people to observe
unreasonable laws, while you excuse yourselves from such laws. You don't care about obtaining real wisdom,

c.f. readings for Easter 5
Acts 14.19-27: Some Jewish leaders arrived from Pisidian
Antioch and Iconium.
They turned the people of Lycaonia against Paul and Barnabas. The people stoned Paul and, thinking he was
dead, dragged him outside the town. The disciples gathered around Paul's body. As
they did so, he stood up. The next day he and Barnabas went to the town of
Derbe. After Derbe, they went back to Pisidian
Antioch via Lystra and Iconium. In each place they encouraged the
believers to persevere in the faith, especially during difficult times in
their lives. In each place they also appointed elders to be
church leaders.
Eventually Paul and Barnabas arrived back in Syrian Antioch, where they
gave an account of how God had opened the door of faith to non-Jewish
people
Jesus, please help me persevere in the faith,

Psalm
145: I will give you glory, O God my king.
I will bless your name day after day. The Lord is great, worthy of all praise.
His greatness cannot be measured. Age to age shall proclaim your works,
shall speak of your splendor and glory. The Lord is kind and full of compassion,
slow to anger, abounding in love. How good is the Lord to all,
compassionate to all his creatures. All your creatures shall thank you, O Lord,
and tell all the world of your love. The Lord is faithful in all his words
and loving in all his deeds. The Lord supports all who fall
and raises all who are bowed down. The eyes of all creatures look to you
and you give them their food each day. The Lord is close to all who call him,
who call on him from their hearts. Let the whole world bless the Lord's holy
name,
for ever, for ages unending.
Thank you, Lord, for your love.

21.1-4:
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth.
The first heaven and the first earth
had disappeared now, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem,

as beautiful as a bride all dressed for her husband. I heard a voice call from the throne: "You

Here God lives among people. He will make his home among them. They shall
be his people. He will be their God.

General Election in Australia today. Liberals have problems but the danger of Labor to Christian life is enormous. Maybe the sacking of a
top footballer yesterday for posting a FB quote from the Bible about
homosexuality might be a wake-up call for people to beware of Labor whose
extreme gender policy might lead
to many such sackings. I feel the footballer overstated his case and put it in
extreme black and white ... since he comes from a fundamentalist Bible group. He
was quoting a passage from the Bible that needs to be interpreted
carefully. But it is a fact he was quoting the Bible and it is worrying that his
punishment was so harsh ... and might be the norm in the future. Ironically,
yesterday's decision by the Rugby Union people, kowtowing to the gay extremist Qantas
CEO Alan Joyce, might swing today's election result away from Labor?! A
Portuguese explorer once called Australia "the Southern Land of the Holy
Spirit". So we can pray today: Dear
Holy Spirit, please fall afresh on Australia today and keep it faithful to
Biblical values!

The army of Gorgias was routed. The next year another force, numbering 60,000

Acts
7.55-8.3:
Stephen, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked
up and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at God's right hand. "I can see heaven thrown open", he
said, "and Jesus standing at the right hand of God". At this, the religious leaders at the
meeting
covered their ears with their hands. They sent Stephen out of the city and
stoned him. The false witnesses (who were required to throw the first
stones) put down their clothes at the feet of a young man named Paul. As they were stoning him,
Stephen prayed
"Lord Jesus, receive my spirit". Then he knelt down and prayed
"Lord, do not hold this sin against them". Then he died. Paul
entirely approved of the killing. That day a bitter persecution started against
the church in Jerusalem
and everyone except the apostles fled to the countryside. Paul began working for the destruction of the church. He went from house to house arresting men and
women and sending them to prison

About May 6 I learned from prison sources that a Nigerian Drug Lord in HK had
bought plane tickets for two drug mules from Peru to come to HK. I gave the name
and phone number of the Drug Lord to various authorities .... Customs even have
a copy of his passport .... and tried using FB and other avenues to stop
two more women from going to prison for 10 years, but it was too late. Unbeknown
to me one woman had already been arrested on May 4. She was probably a
sacrificial decoy to let the second one pass. I wonder if the authorities will
go after the Drug Lord?

1 Maccabees 3: Judas led the people in many successful
battles.
He often said that it is easy for a great number of soldiers to be defeated
by a few. "Victory in war does not depend on the
size of an army.

Acts
7.1-54: The meeting of religious leaders had falsely
accused Stephen of being disloyal to Moses. So Stephen gave a long speech, full of loyalty

stubborn people, with your pagan hearts and pagan ears. You are always
resisting the Holy Spirit, just as your ancestors did. Your ancestors killed the prophets who
foretold the coming of the Just One. You have gone further: you
have killed the Just One himself". When the leaders heard these words, they were
very angry and wanted to kill Stephen

give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him".

10.38-42:
Jesus one day visited the home of Martha and her sister Mary. Mary sat and
listened to Jesus. Martha complained that Mary was not helping her with
the serving. Jesus said "Martha, Martha, you worry and fret about so
many things. Mary has chosen the one thing that matters".
Jesus, please help
me listen like Mary
