Yesterday I had lunch in my home with the son of an elderly European man in prison (... tricked by Nigerian Drug Lords ... one of 6 recently arrived elderly men) and an evening restaurant meal with the parents of a young girl from Malaysia who also is facing a drug trafficking charge. God bless both families and somehow bring good out of their current tough situations

Maccabees 13-14: After Jonathan's capture, Jonathan's brother
Simon became leader of the Jews. He rallied the people to defend
their land
against an attack by Trypho. Trypho was forced to abandon his attack by a
heavy snowfall.
As he returned to his own land, he killed Jonathan. Trypho killed Antiochus and became king of
Asia. Simon made peace with Demetrius. He also
renewed the treaties with Sparta and the Romans. Israel had peace during the time of Simon.
Dear God, please give the world
leaders who work for peace

Psalm
144: Blessed be the Lord, my rock,
who gives me strength for every situation. He is my love, my fortress.
He is my stronghold, my savior. To you, O God, will I sing a new song,
you who so often rescued David your servant. Happy the people whose God is the
Lord.
Please continue to bless your people, Lord. Let our sons flourish like saplings
grown tall and strong from their youth;
our daughters graceful as columns,
adorned as though for a palace.
Let our crops and stock be blessed.
May there be no sound of weeping on our streets.
Lord, please help us love and
honor you every day.
Don't let us ever forget your love

Acts
12.1-17:
About this time, King Herod began persecuting
the church. He beheaded the apostle James, brother of John. He arrested
Peter during Passover time. He put Peter in prison and planned to have him
put on trial and killed after Passover. Each day Peter was in prison, the believers
stormed heaven praying for him. On the night before he was to be put on
trial, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, fastened with chains, with
more soldiers at the prison entrance. Suddenly Peter's cell was filled with light,
and an angel told him to get up. The chains fell from his
hands. The angel
led Peter out of the prison, without the guards knowing what was happening.
Peter then left for another place. Herod was
unable to find him

Luke
14.7-11: At the leader's house, Jesus noticed how the guests picked the places of
honor.
He said to them "When someone invites you to a meal, do not choose a
seat of honor. Rather, when you are a guest, make your way to the lowest place
and sit there. Maybe your host will ask you to move to a seat of honor.
Everyone
who exalts himself, will be humbled. Whoever humbles himself, will be
exalted"

Maccabees 12: Jonathan sent a delegation to Rome to renew
his treaty with the Romans. He also renewed treaties with other
groups, all the time using politics to secure peace for
Israel. But Demetrius once again made war on Jonathan,
this time with
a larger army than before. Jonathan bravely faced and defeated Demetrius'
army before they could enter the land of Israel. Not long after this Jonathan was tricked and
captured by Trypho who wanted to become king of Asia, replacing
Antiochus.

Acts
11.19-26: Some believers went to Antioch in Syria where they
preached the Good News
of the Lord Jesus to non-Jewish people. Many
non-Jewish people became believers. Barnabas, a good man filled with the Holy
Spirit, was sent to Antioch in Syria to encourage the new believers to remain
faithful to the Lord. Barnabas brought
Paul from Tarsus to Antioch.
They stayed in Antioch one year, instructing a large number of people.

Luke
14.1-6: One Sabbath day Jesus went for a meal to the house of a religious leader. In
the house Jesus saw a man with dropsy.
Jesus asked the leaders present there "Is it against the Law to cure a man on the
Sabbath?" But they remained silent.
Jesus took the man, healed him, and sent him away.
Then Jesus said to the leaders "Which of you here, if his son falls into a
well, will not pull him out on a Sabbath day?"
Again the leaders
remained silent
Jesus, help me understand that "the Sabbath was made for man, not
man for the Sabbath"

c.f. readings for Easter 6
Acts 15.1-29: Some
Jewish Christians came to Syrian Antioch from Judea and said that non-Jewish
Christians should be circumcised. Paul and Barnabas argued against such an idea,
and decided to go to Jerusalem to discuss this issue with the apostles there.
During a long meeting, Peter reminded everyone how the Holy Spirit had been
poured out on non-circumcised people. James
spoke of how all peoples are meant to be consecrated to the Lord. James
then issued a teaching for non-Jewish believers: "All we ask you to do is
to abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood from the meat of
strangled animals and from fornication. Avoid these, and you will do what
is right"
Jesus, please don't let me make unreasonable demands on other people

Psalms 66-68: O
God, be gracious and bless us and let your face shine its light upon us. Let
all the peoples praise you, O God. Let all the peoples praise you. O
sing to the Lord, make music to his name. Rejoice in the Lord, exult at his
presence. Father of the orphan, defender of the widow, God provides a shelter

Revelation
10.21-23: I saw the Holy City, the New
Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven. It had God's glory, and glittered
like a precious diamond. There was no temple in the city, since the
Lord God and the Lamb were themselves the temple. The city did not need
sun or moon for light, since it was lit by the radiant glory of God and of
the Lamb.

Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and
remind you of all I have said to you.

Maccabees 11: King Ptolemy of Egypt pretended to be friends
with Alexander.
But then he went to war with Alexander. Ptolemy's army won the battle,
but not long after both Ptolemy and Alexander died. Demetrius then became king.
He had an unstable relationship with Jonathan even though Jonathan on one
occasion rescued him from former supporters of Alexander. Demetrius was replaced as king by
a young Antiochus.
Antiochus confirmed Jonathan's position as leader of Israel.

1 Maccabees 10: When King Demetrius was challenged for the
throne by Alexander, Demetrius tried to get Jonathan's support for a
possible war with Alexander. Alexander then also sought Jonathan's support,
and appointed him as high priest of Israel. Demetrius again tried to win Jonathan's
support, but Jonathan
and the Jews did not trust Demetrius. Alexander and Demetrius went to war.
Demetrius died in the battle. Alexander then became king. He married
Cleopatra, daughter of Egypt's Ptolemy, thus securing a treaty with Egypt.
Jonathan met Alexander and Ptolemy and was
given great honor in their presence. About 147 B.C. Demetrius son of Demetrius
challenged Alexander for the throne.
This younger Demetrius also challenged Jonathan to fight.
Jonathan defeated the army of Demetrius.
Alexander then gave Jonathan new honors.

The size of this army was so large that many of Judas'

9.20-31: After a few days,
Paul began preaching in the

conversion. As time
passed, the Jews planned to kill

the city gates to stop him leaving. Then one night he was able to escape: some
disciples lowered him in a basket from the city wall. He went to Jerusalem and began preaching
boldly in the name of the Lord.
Soon another plot was made to kill him. Therefore the disciples sent him

Yesterday I attended two meetings to do with my anti-drug
campaign ... and was greatly encouraged by both meetings.
Carrie Lam

- this is why I, please God, will take part in the June 4 gathering (my first
time ever)

I recently watched this - excellent! Clear, easy to understand, most
informative:
Jesus and the Dead Sea
Scrolls - Dr Craig Evans
On this day in 1861, in Marseilles, a French bishop died at the age of 78. He
had been born into an aristocratic family which was forced to flee from the
French Revolution. His family went to Italy as refugees. His parents had an
unhappy marriage and eventually divorced. In Italy the young Eugene de Mazenod
had an overpowering experience of the love of Jesus on the Cross. Eugene became
a priest and dedicated himself to serving the poorest parts of French society
such as prisoners and domestic servants. To further his work he joined with
other priests to form a new congregation in the Church. The group came to be
known as the Oblates of Mary Immaculate.
Today the Oblates have around 4,000 members working for the poor in most
countries of the world. Saint
Eugene de Mazenod, pray for us!

Maccabees 7: Some Jews who were disloyal to Judas
joined
with supporters of the new king, Demetrius, to plot the overthrow of
Judas. Nicanor, one of the king's generals, was sent
to defeat Judas
and exterminate the Jews. But when the battle took place, Nicanor
himself died and his army was routed. Once again the land experienced peace
for a
while.
Dear God, please protect us
from people who are disloyal

Psalm
135: Praise the name of the Lord,
praise him, servants of the Lord. Praise the Lord for he is good.
Sing a psalm to his name for he is loving. I know the Lord is great. He does whatever he
wills
in heaven, on earth, in the seas. Pagan idols are silver and gold,
the work of human hands.
They have mouths but they cannot speak.
They have eyes but they cannot see. Sons of Israel, do not trust in useless idols.
Sons of Aaron, trust only in our Creator and Lord.
Dear Lord, please help people
who worship idols to know and love you

Acts
8.14-17:
The apostles in Jerusalem heard that people
in Samaria had accepted the word of God. Peter and John went to Samaria
to pray for the Samaritans to receive the Holy Spirit. So far the Samaritans had only been baptized
in the name of the Lord Jesus. The
Holy Spirit had not come down on them. When Peter and John prayed over them with the
laying on of hands, the Samaritans received the Holy Spirit
Come Holy Spirit. Come down on me. Please help me
understand the sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation

Luke
12.16-21:
Jesus told the people this story: There was a
rich man who, having had a good harvest from his land, thought to himself
"What am I to do? I don't have enough room to store my
crops". Then he said to himself "This is what I will do: I will pull down my
barns and build bigger ones, and store all my grain in them, and I will
say to my soul: My soul, you have plenty of good things laid by for many
years to come; take things easy, eat, drink, and have a good time". But God said to him "Fool! This very
night your earthly life will come to an end. And all your possessions, who
will get them?"
So it is when people store up treasure for themselves, instead of making themselves rich in the sight of God
Jesus, please help me to be satisfied with
what I have, and not to be greedy

Last night after I had a small tin of tuna with some
salad, when I went for a walk I took the little tuna tin downstairs to put in a
rubbish bin out on the street. Lady in street stall opposite my front door saw
me and said "just fed the cat?"!
