Tues May 28

Yesterday I had lunch in my home with the son of an elderly European man in prison (... tricked by Nigerian Drug Lords ... one of 6 recently arrived elderly men) and an evening restaurant meal with the parents of a young girl from Malaysia who also is facing a drug trafficking charge. God bless both families and somehow bring good out of their current tough situations

1 Maccabees 13-14: After Jonathan's capture, Jonathan's brother Simon became leader of the Jews.  He rallied the people to defend their land against an attack by Trypho. Trypho was forced to abandon his attack by a heavy snowfall. As he returned to his own land, he killed Jonathan. Trypho killed Antiochus and became king of Asia. Simon made peace with Demetrius. He also renewed the treaties with Sparta and the Romans. Israel had peace during the time of Simon.
Dear God, please give the world leaders who work for peace

My recording of this reading

Psalm 144: Blessed be the Lord, my rock, who gives me strength for every situation. He is my love, my fortress. He is my stronghold, my savior. To you, O God, will I sing a new song, you who so often rescued David your servant. Happy the people whose God is the Lord. Please continue to bless your people, Lord. Let our sons flourish like saplings grown tall and strong from their youth; our daughters graceful as columns, adorned as though for a palace. Let our crops and stock be blessed. May there be no sound of weeping on our streets.
Lord, please help us love and honor you every day. Don't let us ever forget your love

Acts 12.1-17: About this time, King Herod began persecuting the church. He beheaded the apostle James, brother of John. He arrested Peter during Passover time. He put Peter in prison and planned to have him put on trial and killed after Passover. Each day Peter was in prison, the believers stormed heaven praying for him. On the night before he was to be put on trial, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, fastened with chains, with more soldiers at the prison entrance. Suddenly Peter's cell was filled with light, and an angel told him to get up. The chains fell from his hands. The angel led Peter out of the prison, without the guards knowing what was happening. Peter then left for another place. Herod was unable to find him

Luke 14.7-11: At the leader's house, Jesus noticed how the guests picked the places of honor. He said to them "When someone invites you to a meal, do not choose a seat of honor. Rather, when you are a guest, make your way to the lowest place and sit there. Maybe your host will ask you to move to a seat of honor. Everyone who exalts himself, will be humbled. Whoever humbles himself, will be exalted"
Jesus, please help me  choose the lowest place

1 Maccabees 12: Jonathan sent a delegation to Rome to renew his treaty with the Romans.  He also renewed treaties with other groups, all the time using politics to secure peace for Israel. But Demetrius once again made war on Jonathan, this time with
a larger army than before. Jonathan bravely faced and defeated Demetrius' army before they could enter the land of Israel. Not long after this Jonathan was tricked and captured  by Trypho who wanted to become king of Asia, replacing Antiochus.

Dear God, please give wisdom and courage to all leaders

Psalms 140-143: Lord, save me from people who do evil, you who do justice for the needy. I have no way out of this situation.
And no one wants to help me.
Lord, I beg you tonight to make haste and give me an answer, for my spirit fails within me. In the morning let me know your love for I put my trust in you.
Lord, please help people who are in big trouble

Acts 11.19-26: Some believers went to Antioch in Syria where they preached the Good News of the Lord Jesus to non-Jewish people. Many non-Jewish people became believers. Barnabas, a good man filled with the Holy Spirit, was sent to Antioch in Syria to encourage the new believers to remain faithful to the Lord. Barnabas brought Paul from Tarsus to Antioch. They stayed in Antioch one year, instructing a large number of people. It was at Antioch that the believers were first called "Christians"

Luke 14.1-6: One Sabbath day Jesus went for a meal to the house of a religious leader. In the house Jesus saw a man with dropsy. Jesus asked the leaders present there "Is it against the Law to cure a man on the Sabbath?" But they remained silent.
Jesus took the man, healed him, and sent him away. Then Jesus said to the leaders "Which of you here, if his son falls into a well, will not pull him out on a Sabbath day?" Again the leaders remained silent

Jesus, help me understand that "the Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath"

c.f. readings for Easter 6

Acts 15.1-29: Some Jewish Christians came to Syrian Antioch from Judea and said that non-Jewish Christians should be circumcised. Paul and Barnabas argued against such an idea, and decided to go to Jerusalem to discuss this issue with the apostles there. During a long meeting, Peter reminded everyone how the Holy Spirit had been poured out on non-circumcised people. James  spoke of how all peoples are meant to be consecrated to the Lord. James then issued a teaching for non-Jewish believers: "All we ask you to do is to abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood from the meat of strangled animals and from fornication. Avoid these, and you will do what is right"
Jesus, please don't let me make unreasonable demands on other people

My recording of this reading

Psalms 66-68: O God, be gracious and bless us and let your face shine its light upon us. Let all the peoples praise you, O God. Let all the peoples praise you. O sing to the Lord, make music to his name. Rejoice in the Lord, exult at his presence. Father of the orphan, defender of the widow, God provides a shelter for the homeless. God gives his people strength.
May all the peoples of the earth know you and praise you, O God

Recording

Revelation 10.21-23: I saw the Holy City, the New Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven. It had God's glory, and glittered like a precious diamond. There was no temple in the city, since the Lord God and the Lamb were themselves the temple. The city did not need sun or  moon for light, since it was lit by the radiant glory of God and of the Lamb.
Jesus, Light of the world, Light of Heaven, we adore you, Lord!

John 14.23-27: At the meal, Jesus said to his disciples "If you love me, you will put my words into practice, and my Father will love you, and we shall make our home in your heart. The New Friend, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and remind you of all I have said to you. Peace I leave with you, my own peace I give you, a peace the world cannot give"
Father, Son and Holy Spirit, please help me understand how you live in my heart. Thank you for your peace

Yesterday morning I went to Caritas Hospital to assist an elderly street sleeper prepare for Heaven. He might be there by the time you read this. He was a regular guest at our Sunday night gathering for the poor. I was privileged to administer four sacraments to him: Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist and the Sacrament of the Sick. Giving him his First Communion on the 66th anniversary of my own First Communion was especially meaningful.

Yesterday afternoon at the High Court I was a character witness for a local Chinese lady facing a drug trafficking charge.

1 Maccabees 11: King Ptolemy of Egypt pretended to be friends with Alexander. But then he went to war with Alexander. Ptolemy's army won the battle, but not long after both Ptolemy and Alexander died. Demetrius then became king.  He had an unstable relationship with Jonathan even though Jonathan on one occasion rescued him from former supporters of Alexander. Demetrius was replaced as king by a young Antiochus. Antiochus confirmed Jonathan's position as leader of Israel.
Dear God, please stop countries from fighting each other

Psalm 139: O Lord, you search me and you know me. You know my resting and my rising. You know exactly what's going on in my life, all my ways are an open book to you. Before ever a word is on my tongue, you know, O Lord, what I'm going to say. Your knowledge is beyond my understanding, too high, beyond my reach. It was you who created my being, knit me together in my mother's womb. I thank you for the wonder of my life, for the wonders of all your creation.
Lord, thank you for the gift of life. Please help me follow the path to eternal life

Acts 10.1-48: Cornelius was a Roman centurion stationed in the town of Caesarea. He and his household prayed, loved God, and helped the local people. One morning Cornelius had a vision that Peter would visit him. In another town, Peter was instructed by the Lord to visit Cornelius. Peter preached God's message to Cornelius and his household. While Peter was speaking, the Holy Spirit came down on all the listeners. Jewish believers  who had accompanied Peter were astonished
that the Holy Spirit would come down on non-Jewish people

Luke 13.18-35: Jesus said to the people "The kingdom of God is like a tiny seed planted in the ground. It grows and becomes a big tree, and the birds live in its branches. The kingdom of heaven is like yeast mixed with flour until the flour is leavened all through. Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you kill the prophets who are sent to you. How often have I longed to gather your children, as a hen gathers her chickens under her wings, and you refused".
Jesus, may your kingdom grow in the hearts of more and more people

1 Maccabees 10: When King Demetrius was challenged for the throne by Alexander, Demetrius tried to get Jonathan's support for a possible war with Alexander. Alexander then also sought Jonathan's support, and appointed him as high priest of Israel. Demetrius again tried to win Jonathan's support, but Jonathan and the Jews did not trust Demetrius. Alexander and Demetrius went to war. Demetrius died in the battle. Alexander then became king. He married Cleopatra, daughter of Egypt's Ptolemy, thus securing a treaty with Egypt. Jonathan met Alexander and Ptolemy and was given great honor in their presence. About 147 B.C. Demetrius son of Demetrius challenged Alexander for the throne. This younger Demetrius also challenged Jonathan to fight.
Jonathan defeated the army of Demetrius. Alexander then gave Jonathan new honors.

Dear God, please help all countries live at peace with each other

My recording of this reading

Psalm 138: I thank you, Lord, with all my heart. You have heard the words of my mouth. With the angels I will bless you. I will adore you in your holy temple. I thank you for your faithfulness and love which are far above what we can understand. On the day I called you answered. You increased the strength of my soul. All earth's kings shall thank you when they hear the words of your mouth. They shall sing of the Lord's ways: "How great is the glory of the Lord!" Though I walk in the midst of affliction
you give me life and frustrate my foes. Your love, O Lord, is eternal. Do not abandon us whom you have made.

Acts 9.32-35: Peter visited churches in many areas. When he went to Lydda, he saw a man named Aeneas, a paralytic who had been bed-ridden for 8 years. Luke 13.10-17: One Sabbath day Jesus was teaching in a prayer hall. There was a woman there who for 18 years had been possessed by a spirit which left her bent over and unable to stand up straight. When Jesus saw her, he called her over and said "Woman, you are rid of your infirmity" and he laid his hands on her. At once she was healed and could stand up straight, and she glorified God
Jesus, please heal the people I know who are bent over and can't stand up straight

1 Maccabees 9: King Demetrius sent another army against Israel. The size of this army was so large that many of Judas' soldiers deserted him. Judas had only a small force to fight the king's army. Judas could have saved his life by running away from the battle, but he courageously chose to stay and fight. Judas died in the battle and his troops fled. Judas' brother Jonathan succeeded him as leader of the Jews. Jonathan gradually reclaimed control of most of the country and again there was peace for a time.

Psalm 137: By the rivers of Babylon we sat and cried, remembering Zion. On the poplars that grew there we hung up our harps. For it was there that they asked us, our captors, for songs. "Sing to us", they said, "one of Zion's songs". O how could we sing the song of the Lord on alien soil? If I forget you, Jerusalem, let my right hand wither. O let my tongue cleave to my mouth
if I remember you not, Jerusalem, above all my joys.

Acts 9.20-31: After a few days, Paul began preaching in the prayer halls that Jesus is the Son of God. People were amazed at Paul's conversion. As time passed, the Jews planned to kill Paul. Paul heard of this and decided to leave the city. The Jews kept watch at the city gates to stop him leaving. Then one night he was able to escape: some disciples lowered him in a basket from the city wall. He went to Jerusalem and began preaching boldly in the name of the Lord. Soon another plot was made to kill him. Therefore the disciples sent him to Tarsus. After this the churches throughout Judea, Galilee and Samaria were left in peace. They steadily grew, strengthened by the Holy Spirit
Holy Spirit, please strengthen me, as you strengthened Paul and the first believers

Luke 12.35-38: Jesus said to his disciples "Be like people waiting for their master to return, ready to open the door as soon as he comes and knocks. Be ready, for I will come at an hour you do not expect. "When someone is given a great deal, of that person more will be expected"
Jesus, you have given me so much. Please help me use my gifts and my situation to do more  to help other people

Reflection on the above Bible readings: Sometimes we need to stay and fight (like Judas in 1st reading). Sometimes we need to make a careful retreat (like Paul in Acts). If Paul had stayed and died in Tarsus, a large part of our Bible would be missing.

1 Maccabees 8:  Judas had heard about the Romans: how they had conquered many lands and yet acted in a friendly way to other nations. Judas therefore sent representatives to Rome  and an alliance was agreed to with the Romans. Judas' aim was to obtain protection and peace for Israel.

Psalm 136: O give thanks to the Lord for he is good, for his great love is without end. It was his wisdom which made the skies,
for his great love is without end. It was he who made the sun, moon and stars, for his great love is without end. It was he who rescued and protected his people Israel, for his great love is without end. He gives food to all living things, for his great love is without end. Acts 9.1-19: Paul kept up his campaign against the Lord's disciples. He got the ok to arrest followers of the Way in Damascus. But on his way to Damascus, a light from heaven surrounded him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying "Paul, Paul, why are you persecuting me?" He said "Who are you, Lord?" The voice replied "I am Jesus, and you are persecuting me. Go into Damascus and you will be told what to do". Paul's eyes were open, but for more than a day he was without his sight, and he ate and drank nothing. The Lord got Ananias, a disciple in Damascus, to visit Paul and pray for him. The Lord said to Ananias "Paul  is my chosen instrument to bring my name to non-Jews and Jews. He will suffer much for me". Ananias went to Paul and prayed for him with the laying on of hands. Straight away, Paul could see again. Then Ananias baptized him

Luke 12.22-34: Jesus said to his disciples "Do not worry about food and clothing. As regards food, think of the birds. They don't sow or reap, and they have no homes to store things. Yet God feeds them. As regards clothing, think how the flowers grow with a beauty greater than that of Solomon's clothes. God will look after you more than he looks after the flowers. So, don't set your hearts on food and clothing. Don't go in for worry. Just set your hearts on God's kingdom, then food and clothing will not be a problem. Where your treasure is, that is where your heart will be too.

On this day in 1861, in Marseilles, a French bishop died at the age of 78. He had been born into an aristocratic family which was forced to flee from the French Revolution. His family went to Italy as refugees. His parents had an unhappy marriage and eventually divorced. In Italy the young Eugene de Mazenod had an overpowering experience of the love of Jesus on the Cross. Eugene became a priest and dedicated himself to serving the poorest parts of French society such as prisoners and domestic servants. To further his work he joined with other priests to form a new congregation in the Church. The group came to be known as the Oblates of Mary Immaculate. Today the Oblates have around 4,000 members working for the poor in most countries of the world. Saint Eugene de Mazenod, pray for us!

Nicanor, one of the king's generals, was sent to defeat Judas and exterminate the Jews. But when the battle took place, Nicanor himself died and his army was routed. Once again the land experienced peace for a while.
Dear God, please protect us from people who are disloyal

My recording of this reading

Psalm 135: Praise the name of the Lord, praise him, servants of the Lord. Praise the Lord for he is good. Sing a psalm to his name for he is loving. I know the Lord is great. He does whatever he wills in heaven, on earth, in the seas. Pagan idols are silver and gold, the work of human hands. They have mouths but they cannot speak. They have eyes but they cannot see. Sons of Israel, do not trust in useless idols. Sons of Aaron, trust only in our Creator and Lord.
Dear Lord, please help people who worship idols to know and love you

Acts 8.14-17: The apostles in Jerusalem heard that people in Samaria had accepted the word of God. Peter and John went to Samaria to pray for the Samaritans to receive the Holy Spirit. So far the Samaritans had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. The Holy Spirit had not come down on them. When Peter and John prayed over them with the laying on of hands, the Samaritans received the Holy Spirit
Come Holy Spirit. Come down on me. Please help me understand the sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation

Luke 12.16-21: Jesus told the people this story: There was a rich man who, having had a good harvest from his land, thought to himself "What am I to do? I don't have enough room to store my crops". Then he said to himself "This is what I will do: I will pull down my barns and build bigger ones, and store all my grain in them, and I will say to my soul: My soul, you have plenty of good things laid by for many years to come; take things easy, eat, drink, and have a good time". But God said to him "Fool! This very night your earthly life will come to an end. And all your possessions, who will get them?" So it is when people store up treasure for themselves, instead of making themselves rich in the sight of God
Jesus, please help me to be satisfied with what I have, and not to be greedy

Reflection on the above readings: The guy in the Gospel thought only about the present ... and his vision of life was out of focus

Last night after I had a small tin of tuna with some salad, when I went for a walk I took the little tuna tin downstairs to put in a rubbish bin out on the street. Lady in street stall opposite my front door saw me and said "just fed the cat?"!

Frightening YouTube reports: LGBT radical impact on educational institutions (No. 5); LGBT infiltrating churches (No. 6); US corporations massively supporting LGBT agenda (No. 7). What has happened in the US is now starting to happen in other places. Some day our children will ask "why didn't you do more to stop this evil?"
