Tues June 4

Tonight I plan to attend the 30th Anniversary June 4 gathering. Why? Well, for 29 years I have never taken part in the June 4 gathering - I felt it was best for me not to take part since I had once worked in China etc. But now the situation has changed dramatically. Hong Kong is in danger. If the extradition law is changed on June 12, a huge nail will be driven into the coffin of HK freedom. This is not a time to think about one's own convenience. As legendary democratic leader Martin Lee says: At a time like this, when HK govt leaders are not listing to the people of HK (... just listening to Beijing ...) the only thing ordinary people can do is take to the streets. Tonight is one chance to show our concern for democratic freedoms; Sunday June 9 is another (a protest march against the extradition law).

My article in today's Ming Pao newspaper has the topic: June 4 - See you tonight! It's on Ming Pao website - click "Australian in HK". Text without recording. If HK readers would like to join me at Victoria Park tonight, please give me a call: 67095674

To prepare for Pentecost (June 9)  let's reflect on the Holy Spirit each day this week:

The seal is a symbol close to that of anointing. "The Father has set his seal" on Christ and also seals us in him. Because this seal indicates the indelible effect of the anointing with the Holy Spirit in the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Orders, the image of the seal (sphragis) has been used in some theological traditions to express the indelible "character" imprinted by these three unrepeatable sacraments. CCC 698

In this week before Pentecost let's often pray each day: Come Holy Spirit, fall afresh on our world!

Job 8-10: Bildad then spoke of God's justice and the fate of people who forget God. Job agreed and said how God was sole creator and judge of the world: "He and no other stretched out the skies. The Bear, Orion, the Pleiades and the Mansions of the South - all were made by him. "Challenging God is unthinkable. Yet I know I am innocent and I'm being punished unjustly. I also know that God knows I'm innocent. So why am I being punished?  This is my question."
Dear God, please save us in time of trial

My recording of this reading

Psalms 149-150: Sing a new song to the Lord. Let the praise of God be always on our lips. Praise God in his holy temple. Praise him in the heavens. O praise him with sound of trumpet. Praise him with lute and harp. Praise him with drums and dancing. Praise him with strings and pipes. Let everything that lives and breathes, give praise to the Lord our Creator.  Alleluia! Lord, to you we say every day "Allelu-ia" ("praise God")
Listen

Acts 14.19-27: Some Jewish leaders arrived from Pisidian Antioch and Iconium. They turned the people of Lycaonia against Paul and Barnabas. The people stoned Paul and, thinking he was dead, dragged him outside the town. The disciples gathered around Paul's body. As they did so, he stood up. The next day he and Barnabas went to the town of Derbe. After Derbe, they went back to Pisidian Antioch via Lystra and Iconium.  In each place they encouraged the believers to persevere in the faith, especially during difficult times in their lives. In each place they also appointed elders to be church leaders. Eventually Paul and Barnabas arrived back in Syrian Antioch, where they gave an account of how God had opened the door of faith to non-Jewish people
Jesus, please help me persevere in the faith, like Paul and Barnabas

Listen

Luke 18.1-7: Jesus told his disciples a story about the need to pray continually and never lose heart: There was a judge who had neither fear of God nor respect for people. In the same town there was a widow who kept asking the judge for justice against someone who had wronged her. For a long time the judge refused to help her, but at last he said to himself "I must give this widow her rights or she will pester me to death". Even more so God will see that justice is done for those who cry out to him for help day and night, even if he delays to help them
Jesus, please give me the perseverance to pray each day

To prepare for Pentecost (June 9), let's reflect on the Holy Spirit each day this week:
Cloud
and light
.
These two images occur together in the manifestations of the Holy Spirit. In the theophanies of the Old Testament, the cloud, now obscure, now luminous, reveals the living and saving God, while veiling the transcendence of his glory - with Moses on Mount Sinai, at the tent of meeting, and during the wandering in the desert, and with Solomon at the dedication of the Temple. In the Holy Spirit, Christ fulfills these figures. The Spirit comes upon the Virgin Mary and "overshadows" her, so that she might conceive and give birth to Jesus. On the mountain of Transfiguration, the Spirit in the "cloud came and overshadowed" Jesus, Moses and Elijah, Peter, James and John, and "a voice came out of the cloud, saying, 'This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to him!' Finally, the cloud took Jesus out of the sight of the disciples. (CCC 697)

In this week before Pentecost let's often pray each day:
Come Holy Spirit, fall afresh on our world!

Job 3-7: Job broke the 7 day silence by wishing that he had never been born. He added "For me, there is no peace, no sleep. My suffering doesn't let me rest." Eliphaz then spoke and reminded Job that God corrects those whom he loves. Job replied that he was innocent of any wrongdoing, so why was he being punished?  He added: "Lying in bed I wonder 'When will it be day?'  During the day I think 'How slowly night comes.' Neither day nor night offers me any relief from my suffering."
Dear Lord, please give courage and peace to people who are suffering great pain or distress

My recording of this reading

Psalm 148: Praise the Lord from the heavens, praise him in the heights. Praise him all his angels, praise him all his spirits. Praise him, sun and moon, praise him, shining stars. Let them praise the name of the Lord. His word gave life to all of them. Praise the Lord from the earth, sea creatures and all oceans. Praise him fire and hail, snow and mist, stormy winds that obey his word. Praise him all mountains and hills, all fruit trees and cedars. Praise him all animals, wild and tame, reptiles and birds in the air. Praise him all earth's kings and peoples, earth's princes and rulers. Praise him young men and maidens, old people together with children. Let them praise the name of the Lord. He is the praise of all who love him.
Lord our God and Creator, you are worthy of all praise

Acts 14.8-18: In Lycaonia, there was a man who had never walked in his life, because his feet were crippled from birth. As he listened to Paul preaching, Paul noticed him and saw that he had the faith to be cured. Paul said in a loud voice "Get to your feet! Stand up!" The crippled man jumped up and began to walk. The local people thought that Paul and Barnabas must be gods, so Paul said to them "We are only human beings like you. We have come with Good News to help you turn from empty idols to the living God who made heaven and earth. It is he who sends you rain and who makes your crops grow".
Jesus, help people turn away from idol worship

Listen

Luke 17.11-19: On the way to Jerusalem, Jesus entered a village where 10 lepers came to meet him. They stood at a distance and called out "Jesus, Master, take pity on us!" Jesus said to them "Go and show yourselves to the priests". As they went away, their leprosy disappeared. Seeing that he was healed, one of them turned back praising God at the top of his voice. He threw himself at Jesus' feet and thanked him. This made Jesus say "Were not all 10 healed? Where are the 9 others?"
Jesus, please don't let me forget to say "thank you" when someone helps me

c.f. Feast of the Ascension
Acts 1.6-11:
On the day he was taken up to heaven, Jesus said to his apostles "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you. Then you will be my witnesses in every part of the world". As he said this, he was lifted up while they watched. A cloud took him from their sight. Then two angels appeared to them and said "Jesus who has been taken up from you, will come back some day in the same way as you have seen him leave".
Jesus, help me be your witness by the way I think and speak and live

My recording of this reading

Psalms 47-48: All peoples, clap your hands, cry to God with shouts of joy. For the Lord, our Creator, we must love and honor, great king over all the earth. Especially in his holy city is the Lord worthy to be praised. Praise is fitting in Mount Sion, our earth's most sacred site. O God, as we pray in your temple, our hearts meditate on your love. May peoples and rulers everywhere acknowledge and love you as Creator of the Universe
Let all the peoples praise you,  Lord. Let all the peoples praise you

Recording

Ephesians 1.16-18: I never fail to remember you in my prayers and to thank God for you. May the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, give you more and more wisdom and knowledge to see ever more clearly his great love for you. May he enlighten your mind to hope for the glorious life he has prepared for us in heaven
Father, Son and Holy Spirit, may I see you more clearly, love you more dearly, follow you more nearly, day by day

Recording

Luke 24.50-53: Jesus then took his disciples out of Jerusalem to the village of Bethany. Lifting up his hands, he blessed them.
As he blessed them, he was carried up to heaven. They worshipped him, then went back to Jerusalem full of joy. They were continually in the Temple praising God.

Jesus, thank you for the Gospel of Luke. Please increase my faith in you as the One who came down from heaven, and went back to heaven

Job 2: Satan asked permission from God to test Job even further. God gave permission. Satan struck Job with sores and ulcers from the soles of his feet to the top of his head. Job scraped himself with a piece of pot. His wife told him to curse God and die. But Job replied "If we take happiness from God's hand, must we not take sorrow too?" News of Job's situation reached three of his friends: Eliphaz, Bildad and Zophar and they decided to visit Job. When they drew near to Job, they did not recognize him.
They wept, tore their clothes and sat on the ground beside Job for 7 days without speaking, stunned and saddened by Job's appearance.

Dear God, please help me imitate Job's trust and faith

My recording of this reading

Psalm 147: Praise the Lord for he is good. Sing to our God for he is loving. To him our praise is due. The Lord builds up Jerusalem and brings back Israel's exiles. He heals the broken-hearted and binds up all their wounds. The Lord raises the lowly
and humbles the wicked. He fixes the number of the stars. He calls each one by name. Our Lord is great and almighty. His wisdom can never be measured. He covers the heavens with clouds. He prepares rain for the earth, making mountains sprout with grass and with plants to serve our needs. His delight is not in horses nor his pleasure in warriors' strength. The Lord delights in those who love and honor him, in those who wait for his love.

Dear God, please help me imitate Job's trust and faith

Acts 13.13-52: Paul and Barnabas went to another Antioch, Antioch in Pisidia. Out of jealousy, the local Jewish leaders there stopped Paul from preaching to the Jewish community. Paul and Barnabas then turned their attention to non-Jewish people, and so the word of the Lord spread through the whole countryside. But the Jewish leaders kept up their campaign, and had Paul and Barnabas expelled from Pisidia.

Luke 16.19-26: Jesus told this story to the people: There was a rich man who used to dress in expensive clothes and feast magnificently every day. At his gate there was a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, who longed to eat scraps that fell from the rich man's table. Dogs even came and licked his sores. The poor man died and was carried away by the angels to be with Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried. In his torment in Hell, the rich man looked up and saw Abraham a long way off with Lazarus at his side. So the rich man cried out "Father Abraham, pity me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in agony in these flames". "My son", replied Abraham, "remember that during your life, good things came your way, just as bad things came the way of Lazarus. Now he is being comforted here, while you are in agony"
Jesus, please help me understand how I should do more to help poor people

Fri May 31

Yesterday afternoon I came away sad from the High Court after a young Pakistan-HK man was given a 17 year sentence for drug trafficking .... by a kind judge who did all that was possible to keep the sentence low but had to follow the guidelines of the Court of Appeal. 17 will come down by a third for good behaviour, and man has already been in detention 3 years ... so he has about 8 years to go. He was given 3 months discount for helping my campaign ... all that the miserly Court of Appeal will allow.

Last night at the usual canteen meal for about 20 homeless people I shared a table with 5 men and 2 women. Of the 8 of us, I was the only one to sleep in a bed last night - the rest slept at McDonald's (God bless McD for their compassion) or in a park. Group last night remembered one of their number who went home to Heaven two days ago. We have asked him to ask Jesus in Heaven to help us find a centre for the poor in Yau Ma Tei!

c.f. readings for Feast of Visitation of Mary to her cousin Elizabeth

Zephaniah 3.14-18: Shout for joy, daughter of Zion, Israel, shout aloud! Rejoice, exult with all your heart, daughter of Jerusalem! The Lord has repealed your sentence; he has driven your enemies away. The Lord, the king of Israel, is in your midst; you have no more evil to fear. When that day comes, word will come to Jerusalem: Zion, have no fear, do not let your hands fall limp. The Lord your God is in your midst, a victorious warrior. He will exult with joy over you, he will renew you by his love; he will dance with shouts of joy for you as on a day of festival.

Isaiah 12: Truly, God is my salvation, I trust, I shall not fear. For the Lord is my strength, my song, he became my saviour. With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation. Give thanks to the Lord, give praise to his name! Make his mighty deeds known to the peoples! Declare the greatness of his name. Sing a psalm to the Lord for he has done glorious deeds; make them known to all the earth! People of Zion, sing and shout for joy, for great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel

Romans 12.9-13: Do not let your love be superficial, but sincerely prefer good to evil. Have a family love for each other, and a profound respect for each other. Luke 1.39-45: As soon as she could and as quickly as she could, Mary went to Elizabeth's home in the hills near Jerusalem. As soon as Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the baby in Elizabeth's womb jumped, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. Elizabeth said to Mary "Of all women, you are the most blessed, and blessed is the baby in your womb. Why should I be honored with a visit from the mother of my Lord?  Blessed are you for believing God's promise"
Mary, blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus

Job 1: Job lived in Southern Israel. He had 7 sons and 3 daughters. He owned thousands of animals. He loved God and was a good man. Satan, one of the fallen angels, challenged God to let Job be put to the test. God gave permission to Satan to test Job. On the same day, all Job's animals were captured by raiders, and all his children died in a storm. Job tore his clothes, shaved his head, bowed to the ground and prayed: "Naked I came from my mother's womb, naked I shall return to the womb of the earth.
The Lord gave, the Lord has taken back. Blessed be the name of the Lord."

Psalm 146: My soul, give praise to the Lord. I will praise the Lord all my days. Put no trust in princes, in mortal men in whom there is no help. Take their breath, they return to clay and their plans that day come to nothing. They are happy who are helped by Jacob's God, whose hope is in the Lord our God, who alone made heaven and earth, the seas and all they contain. It is he who gives bread to the hungry, the Lord, who sets prisoners free. It is the Lord who gives sight to the blind, who raises up those who are bowed down. It is the Lord who protects the stranger and upholds the widow and orphan. It is the Lord who loves the just but thwarts the path of the wicked. The Lord will reign for ever, Zion's God, from age to age.
Lord, please increase my trust and faith in you

Acts 13.1-3: In the church at Antioch in Syria, the following were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon, Lucius, Manaen and Paul. One day while they were offering worship to the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said "I want Barnabas and Paul set apart for the work to which I have called them". After fasting and prayer, the leaders prayed for Barnabas and Paul with the laying on of hands and sent them off on a missionary journey

Luke 15.11-24: Jesus told this story: a man had two sons. The younger said to his father "Father, give me the share of the estate that would come to me". So the father divided his property between them. A few days later, the younger son left for a distant land where he wasted his money in wild living. When he had used all his money, that country had a severe famine, and he began to feel the pinch, so he got a job on a farm  feeding  pigs. He would willingly have eaten the pigs' food, but no one offered him anything. Then he came to his senses and said "How many of my father's paid servants have more food than they want, and I am dying of hunger. I will leave this place and go to my father and say: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I no longer deserve to be called your son. Treat me as one of your paid servants." So he left the place and went back to his father.
While he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was moved with pity. He ran to the boy, clasped him in his arms and kissed him tenderly. Then the son said "Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I no longer deserve to be called your son". But the father said to his servants "Quick! Bring out the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the calf we have been fattening, and kill it. We are going to have a feast, a celebration, because this son of mine was dead and has come back to life. He was lost and is found."
Jesus, please help me understand how much you love me, no matter what  mistakes I make

Reflection on the above Bible readings: The father was not interested in the son's past ... no doubt he knew the son was truly sorry for what he'd done and would try to make up for his mistakes .... the father was just full of joy at having the son back.

During one of the cases I attended at the High Court yesterday - where the subject matter involved questions about translators - a top barrister recalled for the judge that court rooms in the building have a room with a dark window ... for translators to use .... translators to use headphones to hear what is being said in court ... and using a microphone to let a defendant (wearing headphones) hear the translation. Only problem, in the HC's 35 years, translators have not used the room .... they have had to sit next to a defendant to pass on translation by word of mouth .... because no equipment was ever installed in the translation room! Barrister expressed hope that proposed new HC building (first I've heard of this) will remedy the problem.

During heavy rain yesterday morning I stayed home for office work. When the rain stopped in the afternoon I went to the Open University of HK to enroll two prisoners for courses by correspondence.

The Book Blog:   4 readings + recordings
Comments welcome here
Readings are from Simple Bible

1 Maccabees 15: In 138 B.C., Antiochus son of Demetrius made war with Trypho. This same Antiochus became hostile to Simon  after the Romans renewed their treaty with Israel. When Antiochus sent an army to attack Israel, Simon defeated that army. A disloyal and ambitious Jew named Ptolemy got Simon and two of his sons drunk at a banquet and killed them. Simon was succeeded by his son John as leader of the Jews.
Dear God,  please protect good leaders from disloyalty

My recording of this reading

Psalm 145: I will give you glory, O God my king. I will bless your name day after day. The Lord is great, worthy of all praise. His greatness cannot be measured. Age to age shall proclaim your works, shall speak of your splendor and glory. The Lord is kind and full of compassion, slow to anger, abounding in love. How good is the Lord to all, compassionate to all his creatures. All your creatures shall thank you, O Lord, and tell all the world of your love. The Lord is faithful in all his words and loving in all his deeds. The Lord supports all who fall and raises all who are bowed down. The eyes of all creatures look to you and you give them their food each day. The Lord is close to all who call him, who call on him from their hearts. Let the whole world bless the Lord's holy name, for ever, for ages unending.
Thank you, Lord, for your love. Thank you for your love

Acts 12.20-23: Wearing his robes of state and sitting on a throne, King Herod made a speech to the leaders of Tyre and Sidon. People acclaimed him saying "It is a god speaking, not a man!" At that moment, the angel of the Lord struck him down, because he had not given the glory to God. He was eaten away with worms and died
Jesus, please help us remember that all our talents are a gift from you. "Not to us, Lord, but to your name be the glory"

Luke 14.12.-14: Jesus said to the meal guests "When you give a lunch or a dinner, do not ask your friends, family, or rich neighbors. Rather, when you have a party, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind. That they cannot repay you means you are fortunate, because repayment will be made to you when the virtuous rise again".
Jesus, help me do more to help poor people

Reflection on the above readings: My experience (e.g. Sunday and Thursday nights) is that having a meal for/with poor people is one of the most meaningful and happy things I can do

Frightening YouTube reports: LGBT radical impact on educational institutions (No. 5); LGBT infiltrating churches (No. 6); US corporations massively supporting LGBT agenda (No. 7). What has happened in the US is now starting to happen in other places. Some day our children will ask "why didn't you do more to stop this evil?"
