Proverbs 2: If you turn your ear to wisdom, you will discover the knowledge of God. For God himself is the giver of wisdom. From his mouth come knowledge and discernment. When wisdom comes into your heart, then prudence and discernment will protect you from evil.
Dear God, source of wisdom, please give us more wisdom

My recording of this reading

Psalms 9-13: I will praise you, Lord, with all my heart. You have so often rescued me from trouble. Thank you! You are the best helper for people in trouble. Please keep on helping me when troubles come. Please stop bad people from hurting others. Please let peoples in all countries know they must avoid evil and live a life of justice.
Dear Lord,  thank you for so often rescuing me
Listen

Acts 17.29-34: Paul continued speaking to the intellectuals: "We have no excuse for thinking that the Creator looks like something carved in gold, silver or stone. God overlooked that sort of thing when we were ignorant. But now he is telling everyone to repent and believe in Jesus raised from the dead". Some intellectuals laughed at Paul. A few became believers.
Jesus, please give intellectuals the humility to believe in you

Listen

Luke 21.3-38: Jesus said to his disciples that Jerusalem would be destroyed and its people scattered throughout the world. He also spoke of how his followers would be persecuted,  and of the end of the world: "The planets will be shaken, nations will be in agony,  bewildered by the force of the oceans. Then they will see me coming in a cloud with great power and glory. To prepare for your own end of earthly life, stay faithful to prayer and goodness. Don't let your heart be coarsened by debauchery, drunkenness and material cares". In this his final week on earth, Jesus spent the daytime in the Temple, teaching. From early morning the people would gather round him to listen to him. Then he would spend the night on the Mount of Olives
Jesus, help me be faithful to prayer and goodness

Extradition: Yesterday with a group of friends I attended the march against Extradition. What an experience! First we joined Bishop Joseph Ha and several thousand Catholics for a prayer service before the march began. Then, behind a large Cross, we walked ever so slowly with more than one million (!) others towards the govt centre in Admiralty. So many young people! Inspiring. The crowd was so huge that many, many tens of thousands broke away from the main route along Hennessy Road and, like an overflowing river, filled many side streets parallel to Hennessy Road. And so well-behaved! God bless all who took part! May the Lord move the hearts of HK's leaders never again to jeopardize HK's freedom. God bless Hong Kong!  *** Protesters spill over into key streets on HK Island *** Latest reports: RTHK, HKFP *** (below)

Pope's letter to young people:
2.
Jesus is in you, he is with you and he never abandons you.  However far you may wander, he is always there, the Risen One.  He calls you and he waits for you to return to him and start over again.  When you feel you are growing old out of sorrow, resentment or fear, doubt or failure, he will always be there to restore your strength and your hope.

Proverbs 1: If you listen to these sayings, you will acquire wisdom. These sayings will help you develop virtue, justice and fairness. Be careful of bad people who try to mislead you. A net is spread in vain if the bird is watching. Wisdom calls aloud in the streets. She delivers her message at the city gates: "How much longer will you prefer ignorance to knowledge? The complacency of fools works their own ruin. But whoever listens to me will live in safety. Whoever listens to me will choose good and avoid evil."
Dear God, please give us more wisdom

Psalm 8: How great is your name, O Lord our God, through all the earth. When I see the heavens, the work of your hands, the moon and stars which you have arranged, then I stop and think: what are we insignificant humans that you should care about us? Yet you have put us in charge of the world. Everything is subject to our control.
How great is your name, O Lord our God, through all the earth

Acts 17.16-28: In Athens, Paul was sad see so much idol worship. Each day he talked to as many people as he could about Jesus. He was invited to a meeting of intellectuals. He said to them "The Creator of the world does not make his home in shrines made by human hands. He wants everyone to know him as the living God. It is in him that we live and move and have life".
In its mother's womb, a baby lives and moves and has life. The universe is like a giant womb, God's womb, in which we live and move and have life. Jesus, please help me understand Paul's words

Luke 20.45-47: After some  leaders had asked him some trick questions, Jesus said to his disciples. "Beware of the religious leaders who like to walk about in special clothes and love to be greeted obsequiously in the market places. They like the front seats in prayer halls and the places of honor at banquets. They like making a show of lengthy prayers. But at the same time they steal the property of widows. They will receive a severe sentence from God at the end of their lives
Jesus, please help religious leaders be good people

Romans 5.1-5: By faith and through Jesus we can live in the friendship of God (the Father). We look forward to heaven and an end to all suffering. In the meantime our suffering teaches us patience. Patience produces perseverance. Perseverance produces hope. This hope is not imaginary. It's real, since the love of God has been poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit who has been given to us

John 16.7-33: Jesus said to his disciples at the meal "I will leave you soon. After I go, I will send the New Friend to you. The New Friend will teach you all about right and wrong. No one will be able to take that joy from you. I have told you all these things so that you may find peace in me. In the world you will have trouble, but be brave: I have conquered the world.

Job 40-42: Job said to God " My words have been frivolous. I will not say anything else." God then reminded Job how God was creator of everything, including amazing animals like the hippo and crocodile. Job then said to God "I know you are all-powerful. I have been speaking about things I don't fully understand. I retract all I have said and in dust and ashes I repent." God then praised Job for his fidelity. God restored Job to good health. God restored Job's possessions, more than he had before:
10 more children and thousands of animals. Job lived to be 140 years old and died full of peace.

Dear God, you never really answered Job's questions about the mystery of evil and suffering .... but I know your Son Jesus gave us the answers

My recording of this reading

Psalm 7: Lord God, I take refuge in you. Please rescue me from people who are trying to hurt me. Lord, please stop bad people from doing bad things. Please help good people to keep on doing good things. Lord, I will sing to you and thank you for your goodness to me.
Lord, please help me to avoid evil and to do good

Acts 17.10-12: That night Paul and Silas left for the town of Beroea. At the local prayer hall, the Jews were very open-minded and they warmly welcomed the word of the Lord. Every day they studied the Scriptures to check that Paul's words were true. Many Jews and many non-Jewish people became believers
Jesus, please help people be open-minded when hearing your message

Luke 19.41-48: As Jesus caught sight of Jerusalem, he shed tears over it and said "How I wish you had accepted my message of peace. You will be totally destroyed, because you rejected God's offer of grace". Jesus then went into the Temple and drove out the sellers. According to the Scripture", he said, "my house will be a house of prayer. But you have turned it into a robbers' den". Each day Jesus taught in the Temple. The leaders wanted to do away with him, but they didn't know how to, since most of the ordinary  people had great respect for Jesus
Jesus, please don't let me ever reject your friendship

Job 32-39: Job's three friends had no more to say. But a young man named Elihu, decided to join the conversation. He said to Job "How can you claim to be innocent and yet say that God is persecuting you without cause?" As Elihu continued his speech, suddenly  the voice of God himself was heard. God asked Job "Have you ever given orders to the morning for day to begin? Have you ever arranged the stars in the sky? Was it you who gave all the animals their various powers? Who do you think you are?"
Dear God, when we are confronted by the mystery of suffering and evil, please help us realize that these things do not come from you

Acts 17.1-9: Paul and his friends next went to the town of Thessalonika. On three Sabbaths,  Paul spoke at the local prayer hall, explaining how Jesus is the Anointed One. Some Jewish listeners and many non-Jewish people became believers. But the religious leaders, out of jealousy, stirred up a gang from the market place. The gang dragged some believers to the city council. The leaders shouted "The people who have been turning the whole world upside down, have come to our town. They claim there is another emperor, Jesus". The believers were eventually allowed to go on bail
Jesus, please don't let jealous people stop anyone from becoming a Christian

Luke 19.28-40: When Jesus came near to Jerusalem, he sent two disciples to a nearby village to get a donkey colt which no one had ever ridden. Jesus sat on the colt and began the descent from the Mount of Olives down the hill to Jerusalem. The disciples spread their clothes on the road, and joyfully praised God for all the miracles they had seen. They cried out "Blessings on the King who comes in the name of the Lord!" Some religious leaders told Jesus to stop the disciples from calling out. Jesus replied "If these keep silence, the stones will cry out"
Jesus, you who came in the name of the Lord, we praise and love you

Job 25-31: Bildad then reminded Job that God's power is beyond human understanding.  No one should question God's actions. Job replied: "I swear by God who denies me justice that as long as I have breath, I will live a life of innocence. I remember how I have always lived as a friend of God: how I helped the poor, the orphan, the dying, the widow, the blind, the lame. I remember how I made a pact with my eyes not to linger on any other woman but my wife. I remember how I have never put my trust in riches or fame. I have always trusted only in the Lord. Yet now people laugh at me and make fun of me. They avoid me and even spit on me. When will God answer me?"

Psalm 5: At the start of this day I pray to you, O Lord, my King and my God. I offer you my prayer and ask for your help. Through the greatness of your love, I have access to your friendship.  I bow down in reverence and worship. Lead me, Lord, in the way you want me to go. It is you, Lord, who bless good people. You surround them with favors, as with a shield.

Acts 16.25-37: Late that night in prison, Paul and Silas were praying and singing God's praises, while the other prisoners listened to them. Suddenly there was an earthquake that shook the prison. All the doors opened, and the chains fell from all the prisoners. The main jailer drew his sword and was about to kill himself, thinking the prisoners had escaped. But Paul shouted to him "Don't hurt yourself. We are all still here". Trembling, the jailer threw himself at the feet of Paul and Silas. Then he escorted them out of the prison asking "What must I do to be saved?" They said "Become a believer in the Lord Jesus, and both you and your household will be saved". They explained the word of God to him and his family. He washed their wounds and then they "washed his wounds" by baptizing him and all his household. They had a meal together in the jailer's home, to celebrate the family's conversion to belief in God

Luke 19.1-9: In Jericho there was a wealthy man named Zacchaeus, a senior tax collector. He wanted to see what kind of person Jesus was. But because of his short stature he couldn't see over the crowd. So he climbed a tree. Jesus saw him up the tree and said "Zacchaeus, come down, because I will stay at your house today". Zacchaeus hurried down and welcomed Jesus warmly. People complained "He's gone to stay at the house of an outcast". Zacchaeus replied "Sir, I am going to give half of my property to the poor. And if I have cheated anyone, I'll pay them back fourfold". Jesus said to him "Today salvation has come to this house".
Jesus, please help more people to want to know and love you

Job 22-24: Eliphaz then said that God was punishing Job because justice demanded that Job be punished for his sins. Job replied: "I know that God sees everyone and everything. God sees every step I take. But I cannot contact him. He has filled my life with sadness and fear and yet he doesn't answer my prayer."
Dear God, in times of darkness, with Jesus we pray "My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?"

Psalm 4: At the end of this day I praise you, Lord, for all your love and help. O people of the world, how long will you close your hearts to God? How long you will keep on chasing false goals? Acts 16.16-24: One day we met a slave girl  who made a lot of money for her owners by telling fortunes. The girl followed us each day shouting "These are the servants of God". Paul said to the spirit possessing her "I order you, in the name of Jesus Christ, to leave her". The spirit immediately left her, but her owners were angry that she could no longer tell fortunes. The owners seized Paul and Silas and dragged them to court, saying to the magistrate "These people are causing a disturbance in our city". A crowd supported the owners in calling for their punishment. They were given many lashes and put into prison with their feet in irons

Luke 18.35-43: As Jesus entered Jericho, there was a blind beggar sitting by the road. People in the crowd told him that Jesus of Nazareth was passing by. So he called out "Jesus, Son of David, have pity on me". Some people told him to be quiet, but he just shouted all the louder "Jesus, Son of David, have pity on me". Jesus stopped and asked him "What do you want me to do for you?" He replied "Sir, let me see again". Jesus said to him "Receive your sight. Your faith has saved you". Instantly his sight returned, and he followed Jesus, praising God
