Tues June 25

Yesterday morning I visited Lai King young women's prison, followed by a visit in the afternoon to Pik Uk young men's prison. One piece of good news: no recent young drug mules from Malaysia arrested in HK (... only 3 for 2019, compared with 24 last year...). This in part is due to the excellent team work between The Star and police in Malaysia, which has already led to the arrest of several "recruiters". Yesterday The Star published the first of 6 reports on the Malaysian Drug Trade - online here. On June 30 a full documentary movie is due to be published. Hard copy of yesterday's Star (which mentions my work):

Pope's letter to young people:
10. Solomon, when he had to succeed his father, felt lost and told God: "I am a mere youth, not knowing at all how to act".  Yet the audacity of youth moved him to ask God for wisdom and he devoted himself to his mission.  Something similar happened to the prophet Jeremiah, called despite his youth to rouse his people. The devotion of Jeremiah to his mission shows what can happen when the brashness of youth is joined to the power of God.

Proverbs 9: Wisdom has built herself a house, she has erected 7 pillars. She has sent out her maidservants to proclaim from the city's heights: "Come and eat my bread, drink the wine I have prepared. Leave your foolishness and you will live. Come and walk in the way of wisdom."
Lord, please help us accept your invitation to grow in wisdom

My recording of this reading

Psalms 20-21: May the Lord protect and help you, may he give you your heart's desire and fulfil every one of your plans. Some trust in chariots or horses, but we trust in the Lord.
Lord, may our plans and hopes be acceptable to you. Please bless our plans

Listen

Acts 19.11-20: So remarkable were the miracles worked by God through Paul, that even handkerchiefs which had touched him, were taken to the sick, and they were healed and evil spirits came out of them. Some believers admitted how they had practised magic. They collected their expensive books on magic and burnt them in public. Things like these helped the word of the Lord to continue spreading
Jesus, what can I do to help your message spread?

Listen

Luke 22.47-53: While Jesus was  speaking, a group of men arrived, led by Judas. One of Jesus' apostles used his sword to cut off the right ear of one of the men sent to arrest Jesus. Jesus told his apostles not to use their swords. Then touching the man's ear, he healed him. Jesus said to the men arresting him "This is your hour. This is the reign of darkness"
Jesus, you gave up your freedom for our salvation

R.I.P. Fr Peter King O.M.I.

Fr Peter was born in Shanghai in 1925 ... was a refugee seminarian in Macau and the Philippines ...ordained a priest in the Philippines in 1958 ... joined the Oblates in 1961....worked in Philippines until about 1990, then came to Hong Kong where he ministered to prisoners, migrant workers and religious communities. He died at 11.35pm last Saturday night June 22 at Tai Po Hospital. His funeral service will be at Notre Dame College, Kowloon, at 8pm on Friday July 5 and on Saturday morning July 6 also at Notre Dame. Thank you God for the life of Fr Peter. May his prayers on the other side of the veil in Heaven help us on this side here on earth.

Pope's letter to young people:
9. King David was chosen while still a boy. When the prophet Samuel was seeking the future king of Israel, a man offered as candidates his sons who were older and more experienced. Yet the prophet said that the chosen one was the young David, who was out tending the flock, for "man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart".  The glory of youth is in the heart, more than in physical strength or the impression given to others.

c.f. Readings for Birthday of John the Baptist

Isaiah 46-49: The Lord called me before I was born. From my mother's womb he knew my name. While I was thinking that I had toiled in vain, all the while my cause was with the Lord. The Lord who formed me in the womb and assigned me to rescue his people, that same Lord  said to me: 'I will make you the light of the nations, so that my salvation will reach to the ends of the earth'. The Lord also says to his people: "Does a woman forget her baby, or a mother the child within her womb? Yet even if these forget, I will never forget you".
Lord, please help me understand how you loved me even before I was born.

My recording of this reading

Psalm 139: O Lord, you search me and you know me. You know my resting and my rising. You know exactly what's going on in my life, all my ways are an open book to you. Before ever a word is on my tongue, you know, O Lord, what I'm going to say. Your knowledge is beyond my understanding, too high, beyond my reach. It was you who created my being, knit me together in my mother's womb. I thank you for the wonder of my life, for the wonders of all your creation.
Lord, thank you for the gift of life. Please help me follow the path to eternal life

Listen

Acts 13: Paul said: God deposed Saul and made David their king, of whom he approved in these words, "I have selected David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart, who will carry out my whole purpose." To keep his promise, God has raised up for Israel one of David's descendants, Jesus, as Saviour, whose coming was heralded by John when he proclaimed a baptism of repentance for the whole people of Israel. Before John ended his career he said, "I am not the one you imagine me to be; that one is coming after me and I am not fit to undo his sandal." "My brothers, sons of Abraham's race, and all you who fear God, this message of salvation is meant for you.

Luke 1.67-80: When John was named, his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and said "Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel. He has visited his people. And you, little child, you shall be called a prophet of the Most High. You will go before the Lord to prepare a way for him". When John grew older, he lived in the wilderness until the time came for him to begin his ministry.
Jesus, please help me prepare your way by helping people to know you

Listen

Reflection on the above readings: Why June 24 for John the Baptist? Because Jesus was conceived in the 6th month of Elizabeth's pregnancy .... so John was born 6 months (approximately) before Jesus ... and 6 months before Dec 25 is June 24. Every Christian is meant to be like John the Baptist - preparing a way for Jesus in whatever way we can

c.f. readings for Corpus Christi

Genesis 14-15: In the land of Canaan there were many kings. Sometimes they went to war against each other. Melchizedek, king of Salem, was also a priest of God. Abraham gave Melchizedek 10% of all his possessions. Melchizedek gave Abraham bread and wine. Melchizedek asked God to give Abraham a special blessing. God said to Abraham, "This land of Canaan is yours;  I give it to you and your descendants."
Dear God, please help all the kings and leaders in the world to be friends
My recording of this reading

Psalm 116: I love the Lord for he has heard the cry of my appeal. He turned his ear to me in the day when I called him. They surrounded me, sorrow, distress and the snares of death. I was helpless, so the Lord saved me. Calm down my soul, for the Lord has been good. I will walk in the presence of the Lord in the land of the living. How can I repay the Lord for his goodness to me? The cup of salvation I will raise to thank the Lord. O precious in the eyes of the Lord is the death of his faithful. Lord, you have loosened my bonds. I am your servant.
Jesus, thank you for the Cup of Salvation that is your Eucharistic Blood
Recording

1 Corinthians 11.20-26: Concerning the Lord's Supper, this is what I received from the Lord and then taught you: On the night he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took some bread, broke it and said "This is my body which will be broken for you". After supper he took a cup and said "This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Each time you drink this cup, drink it in memory of me". Until the Lord comes, therefore, each time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you re-enact the death of the Lord
Jesus, help me understand how bread and wine become your body and blood when Christians celebrate the Eucharist

Recording

Luke 9.10-17: Once after Jesus had been healing and teaching all afternoon, his disciples said to him "It's getting late and the people need to go and eat". Jesus answered "They don't need to go. You feed them". The disciples replied "We have only 5 loaves and 2 fish". Jesus got the people to sit on the grass. There were about 20,000 of them. Then he blessed the loaves and fish. He handed the loaves and fish to his disciples. His disciples gave them to the crowd. Everyone had plenty to eat. They even had 12 baskets of leftovers.
Jesus, please make leaders do more to help the starving people of the world

Recording

Reflection on the above readings (from Daniel Daring, below):  The name of Jesus in Chinese is: . The character on the left, , represents ear and refers to listening. The character on the right, , is a combination of two characters. The first one means fish, the second one means grain. Ever since the miracle of multiplication recorded in today's Gospel, bread and fish became the earliest symbols of the Eucharist.

8. Samuel was still a young boy, yet the Lord spoke to him.  Thanks to the advice of an adult, he opened his heart to hear God's call: "Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening".  As a result, he became a great prophet who intervened at critical moments in the history of his country. King Saul was also young when the Lord called him to undertake his mission).

Proverbs 7-8: To Wisdom say "My sister". Call Perception your dearest friend. Wisdom says: "The Lord created me before time began. I was by his side, delighting him day after day. Psalm 19 (sun + law = the "sun-in-law" psalm): The heavens proclaim the glory of God, the starry skies are the work of his hands. The stars can't speak, but they are God's handwriting. The sun is God's love shining on the whole world. The universe is a masterpiece, and so is God's law which shines in our hearts. The precepts of the Lord enlighten our lives each day. The law of the Lord gives joy and wisdom to our hearts. The decrees of the Lord are to be desired more than gold, they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb. But  often we are unaware of  our errors. Lord, please protect us from making mistakes.
Lord, may the words of my mouth and the thoughts of my heart  be pleasing to you

Acts 19.8-10: For three months, Paul went to the Jewish prayer hall in Ephesus, speaking boldly about the kingdom of God. When some Jews strongly attacked the Way, he stopped going to the prayer hall, and began daily discussions in a lecture room. He kept doing this for two years, with the result that people from many places, both Jews and non-Jews, were able to hear the word of God
Jesus, please give more and more people the opportunity to hear your word

Luke 22.39-46: After the Passover meal, Jesus and his disciples went to the Mount of Olives. Jesus said to them "Pray for protection in time of trial". Then he went apart by himself, about 40 meters away,  knelt down and prayed "Father, save me from this time of trial. But let your will, not mine, be done". An angel from heaven appeared to him to give him strength. His agony was so great that his sweat became drops of blood falling to the ground. When he got up and went to the disciples, he found them sleeping - so overcome were they with sorrow
Jesus, please help me to pray "not my will, but yours be done"

Pope's letter to young people:
7. In Gideon, we see the frankness of young people, who check if words are matched by facts. When told that the Lord was with him, Gideon responded: "But if the Lord is with us, why then have all these things happened to us?" Proverbs 6: Idler, go to the ant.  Ponder her ways and grow wise. No one gives her orders, yet she makes sure of her food. Night and day you spend so much time sleeping. In no time poverty and want will be at your pillow. Avoid deceitful people, those who have leering lips, winking eyes, shuffling feet, beckoning fingers. Avoid people with a haughty look and people who sow dissension. Do not desire the beauty of your neighbour's wife. Adultery means trouble and disgrace.
Dear God, please give us the wisdom to avoid deceit and dishonesty

My recording of this reading

Psalms 17-18: Lord,  when trouble breaks out on every side, please protect and help me. For you are my strength, my rock, my fortress, my savior. I love you, Lord who save me because you love me. Lord, you are my lamp who lightens my life. I will praise you among the nations.

When Paul explained Jesus to them, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Paul then prayed with them using the laying on of hands, and the Holy Spirit came down on them. They began to speak in tongues and to prophesy

Proverbs 4-5: Acquire wisdom, never forget her. Do not desert her. She will keep you safe. Wisdom is life to those who obtain her, health for the entire body. Take no notice of a loose-living woman, go nowhere near the door of her house. Drink the water of your own cistern, fresh water from your own well. Proverbs 3:  Let kindness and loyalty never leave you. Tie them around your neck. In everything you do, keep God in mind. He will help you take the right path. Love God and turn your back on evil. This will give good health to your body. Do not refuse a kindness to anyone who asks, if it is in your power to help them

Psalms 14-15: So many people live and act as if God doesn't exist. Some foolish people even say there is no God. So many people have left the way of justice and truth. Luke 22.1-6: Big crowds were in Jerusalem for the feast of the Passover which was only a few days away. The religious  leaders were afraid that the crowds would prevent them from killing Jesus. Judas then began looking for an opportunity to betray Jesus at a time when there were no crowds around
