Tues June 25
Yesterday morning I visited Lai King young women's prison, followed by a visit
in the afternoon to Pik Uk young men's prison. One piece of good news: no recent
young drug mules from Malaysia arrested in HK (... only 3 for 2019, compared
with 24 last year...). This in part is due to the excellent team work between The
Star and police in Malaysia, which has already led to the arrest
of several "recruiters". Yesterday The
Star published the first of 6 reports on the
Malaysian Drug Trade - online
here. On June 30 a full documentary movie is due to be published. Hard copy
of yesterday's Star (which mentions my work):

My article in today's Ming Pao newspaper has the topic: HK young people - a Nobel Peace Prize? It's on Ming Pao website - click "Australian in HK". Text without recording

Pope's
letter to young people:
10. Solomon,
when he had to succeed his father, felt lost and told God: "I am a mere
youth, not knowing at all how to act". Yet the audacity of youth
moved him to ask God for wisdom and he devoted himself to his mission.
Something similar happened to the prophet Jeremiah,
called despite his youth to rouse his people. The devotion of Jeremiah to his
mission shows what can happen when the
brashness of youth is joined to the power of God.

Proverbs
9: Wisdom has built herself a house,
she has erected 7 pillars. She has sent out her maidservants
to proclaim from the city's heights:
"Come and eat my bread,
drink the wine I have prepared. Leave your foolishness and you will live.
Come and walk in the way of wisdom."
Lord, please help us accept
your invitation to grow in wisdom

Psalms
20-21: May the Lord protect and help you,
may he give you your heart's desire
and fulfil every one of your plans. Some trust in chariots or horses,
but we trust in the Lord.
Lord, may our plans and hopes
be acceptable to you.
Please bless our plans

Acts
19.11-20: So remarkable were the miracles worked by God
through Paul, that even handkerchiefs which had touched him,
were taken to the sick, and they were healed and evil spirits came out of
them. Some believers admitted how they had practised
magic. They collected their expensive books on magic and burnt them in
public. Things like these helped the word of the Lord
to continue spreading
Jesus, what can I do to help your message
spread?

Luke
22.47-53: While Jesus was speaking, a group of
men arrived, led by Judas.
One of Jesus' apostles used his sword to cut
off the right ear of one of the men sent to arrest Jesus. Jesus told his apostles not to use their
swords. Then touching the man's ear, he healed him. Jesus said to the men arresting him "This
is your hour. This is the reign of darkness"
Jesus, you gave up your freedom for our salvation

Pope's
letter to young people:
9. King David was chosen while still a boy.
When the prophet Samuel was seeking the future king of Israel, a man offered as
candidates his sons who were older and more experienced. Yet the prophet said
that the chosen one was the young David, who was out tending the flock, for
"man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the
heart". The glory of youth is
in the heart, more than in physical strength or the impression given to others.

Isaiah 46-49: The
Lord called me before I was born. From
my mother's womb he knew my name. While I was thinking that I had toiled
in vain, all the while my cause was with the Lord. The Lord who formed me in the
womb and assigned me to rescue his people, that same Lord said to me: 'I
will make you the light of the nations, so that my salvation will reach to the
ends of the earth'. The Lord also says to his people: "Does a woman forget
her baby, or a mother the child within her womb? Yet even if these forget, I
will never forget you".
Lord, please help me understand how you loved me even before I was born.

Psalm
139: O Lord, you search me and
you know me. You know my resting and my rising. You know exactly what's going on
in my life, all my ways are an open book to you. Before ever a word is on my
tongue, you know, O Lord, what I'm going to say. Your knowledge is beyond my
understanding, too high, beyond my reach. It
was you who created my being, knit me together in my mother's womb. I
thank you for the wonder of my life, for the wonders of all your creation.
Lord, thank you for the gift of life. Please help me follow the path to
eternal life

Luke
1.67-80: When John was named, his father
Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and said "Blessed be the Lord,
the God of Israel. He has visited his people. And you, little child, you shall
be called a prophet of the Most High. You
will go before the Lord to prepare a way for him". When John grew
older, he lived in the wilderness until the time came for him to begin his
ministry.
Jesus, please help me prepare your way by helping people to know you

Reflection on the above readings: Why June 24 for John the Baptist? Because Jesus was conceived in the 6th month of Elizabeth's pregnancy .... so John was born 6 months (approximately) before Jesus ... and 6 months before Dec 25 is June 24. Every Christian is meant to be like John the Baptist - preparing a way for Jesus in whatever way we can

Genesis 14-15: In
the land of Canaan there were many kings. Sometimes they went to war against
each other. Melchizedek, king of Salem, was also a priest of God. Abraham gave
Melchizedek 10% of all his possessions. Melchizedek gave Abraham bread
and wine. Melchizedek
asked God to give Abraham a special blessing. God said to Abraham, "This
land of Canaan is yours; I give it to you and your descendants."

Psalm 116: I
love the Lord for he has heard the cry of my appeal. He turned his ear to me in
the day when I called him. They surrounded me, sorrow, distress and the snares
of death. I was helpless, so the Lord saved me. Calm down my soul, for the Lord
has been good. I will walk in the presence of the Lord in the land of the
living. How can I repay the Lord for
his goodness to me? The cup of
salvation I will raise to thank the Lord. O
precious in the eyes of the Lord is the death of his faithful. Lord, you have
loosened my bonds. I am your servant.

Corinthians 11.20-26: Concerning the
Lord's Supper, this is what I received from the Lord and then taught you: On the
night he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took some bread, broke it and said "This
is my body which will be broken for you". After supper he took a cup
and said "This cup is the new
covenant in my blood. Each time you drink this cup, drink it in memory of
me". Until the Lord comes, therefore, each time you eat this bread and
drink this cup, you re-enact the death of the Lord

Luke 9.10-17: Once
after Jesus had been healing and teaching all afternoon, his disciples said to
him "It's getting late and the people need to go and eat". Jesus
answered "They don't need to go. You feed them". The disciples
replied "We have only 5 loaves and 2 fish". Jesus got the people to
sit on the grass. There were about
20,000 of them. Then he blessed the loaves and fish. He handed the loaves
and fish to his disciples. His disciples gave them to the crowd. Everyone had
plenty to eat. They even had 12 baskets of leftovers.
Jesus, please make leaders do more to help the
starving people of the world

Reflection on the above readings (from Daniel Daring, below): The name of Jesus in Chinese is: 耶稣. The character on the left, 耶, represents ear and refers to listening. The character on the right, 稣, is a combination of two characters. The first one 鱼 means fish, the second one 禾 means grain. Ever since the miracle of multiplication recorded in today's Gospel, bread and fish became the earliest symbols of the Eucharist.

22.39-46: After the Passover meal, Jesus and his

"Pray for protection in time of trial". Then he went apart by himself, about 40 meters

trial. But let your will, not mine, be done". An angel from heaven appeared to him to give
him strength. His agony was so great that his sweat became drops of blood
falling to the ground. When he got up and went to the disciples, he
found them sleeping - so overcome were they with sorrow
