Tues July 2

This is sad, disgraceful, dangerous, counter-productive, crazy: Protesters storm Legislative Council. Because this adventure started early yesterday morning, therefore ...in sadness and in protest .... I cancelled my plan to attend the Catholic Diocese peace prayer meeting before the main march. Not that the prayer meeting had anything to do with the violence - quite the opposite, has been a force for moderation and peace since the beginning of these troubles. But the main march was initially intended to go to the Legco area .... dangerous etc. The whole extradition issue has now been made worse by the actions of radicals - vandals - whom I hope to see in the near future ... in prison. Live updates from SCMP (many of the leading vandals seem to be adults, not students .... who is behind this??)

Pope's letter to young people:
16: An ancient sage asks us to respect certain limits and to master our impulses: "Urge the younger men to be self-controlled" (Tit 2.6).  It is unhelpful to buy into the cult of youth or foolishly to dismiss others simply because they are older or from another generation.  Jesus tells us that the wise are able to bring forth from their store things both new and old (cf. Mt 13:52). A wise young person is open to the future, yet still capable of learning something from the experience of others.

Proverbs 15: A mild answer diffuses a tense situation. A sharp answer stirs up anger. A kind tongue is a source of life. A harsh tongue hurts other people's feelings. A happy heart produces a cheerful face. A sad heart means a drooping spirit. Hot-headed people provoke disputes. Peaceful people prevent disputes. Without deliberation, plans come to nothing. Successful plans need many counselors. A kindly glance gives joy to the heart. Good news gives strength to the bones.
Dear Lord, please give me a kind tongue

My recording of this reading

Psalm 27: The Lord is my light and my help, whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life, before whom shall I shrink? Though an army encamp against me, even then would I trust. There is one thing I ask of the Lord, for this I long: to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life. It is your face, O Lord, that I seek. Hide not your face. I am sure I will see your goodness in the land of the living. Hope in the Lord, hold firm and take heart. Hope in the Lord!
Lord, you are my light and my help. I will always praise you.

Listen

Acts 20.22-24: Paul continued "Now you see me a prisoner already in spirit. I am on my way to Jerusalem, and have no idea what will happen to me there. The Holy Spirit has made it clear that imprisonment and persecution await me there. But life to me is not a thing to waste words on. What matters is that when I finish my race, I have carried out the mission the Lord Jesus gave me - to bear witness to the Good News of God's grace"
Jesus, please help me live a worthwhile life

Listen

Luke 23.13-25: Pilate said to the religious leaders and to the people "You brought this man before me as a political agitator. Neither Herod nor I have found a case against the man. He has done nothing deserving death. I shall have him flogged and then let him go". But the leaders and people screamed out "Away with him. Crucify him!". Pilate asked "Why? What harm has he done?" They kept shouting "Crucify him! Crucify him!" Pilate then gave in to them and handed Jesus over for crucifixion
Jesus, how great your mental suffering must have been as the crowd shouted for your death

Reflection on the above readings:  I hope and pray that HK govt officials and student protesters will think about conflict resolution as in today's first reading!

July: month of the Precious Blood of Jesus

An amazing story: The singing of a London tramp, made into a moving recording: Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet (need to turn volume up ...and wait for sound to begin at about 28 seconds...then music at 4 mins). Words: Jesus' blood never failed me yet, Never failed me yet, Jesus' blood never failed me yet, There's one thing I know, For he loves me so

Pope's letter to young people:
16. Nonetheless, young people are also urged "to accept the authority of those who are older" (1 Pet 5:5).  The Bible never ceases to insist that profound respect be shown to the elderly, since they have a wealth of experience; they have known success and failure, life's joys and afflictions, its dreams and disappointments.  In the silence of their heart, they have a store of experiences that can teach us not to make mistakes or be taken in by false promises

Proverbs 13-14: Guard your talk and you will protect your life. People who talk too much, easily get into trouble. Choose wise people as your friends and you will be happy. Choose foolish people as  friends and your problems will multiply. The heart knows its own grief best. No human person can fully understand another person's heart. A peaceful heart is necessary for good health.
Envy is like a cancer in the bones. Injustice to the poor is an insult to our Creator. Kindness to the poor gives honor to our Creator. Virtue makes a nation great. Sin causes empires to fall.

Dear God, please help everyone in our country to be wise and kind and just.

My recording of this reading

Psalms 24-26: The Lord's is the earth and all its peoples. It is the Lord who is Creator of the universe. May all hearts open their doors to the Lord. Let him enter, the king of glory. Lord I hope in you all the day long. Forgive my sins and help me walk in your truth.
God my savior, teach me your way of truth

Acts 20.17-21: Paul's journey took him to Meletus where he met the elders of the church from Ephesus. He said to them "You know what my way of life has been from the first day I arrived among you. I have served the Lord in all humility, facing all the sorrows and trials that came to me through the plots of the Jews. I have not hesitated to do anything that would be helpful to you.
I have preached to you and instructed you, both in public and in your homes, urging everyone to believe in our Lord Jesus"

Jesus, please help me be a bit more like Saint Paul

Luke 22.66 -23.12: At daybreak there was a meeting of the religious leaders. Jesus was brought before them. They asked him "Are you the Son of God?". He replied "Yes". They said "We have heard his blasphemy from his own lips". They took him to the Roman governor, Pilate, and made many false accusations against him. Pilate said "I find no case against him". Jesus was then taken to King Herod who made fun of him and sent him back to Pilate
Jesus, on trial before the leaders, before Herod and before Pilate, please help all prisoners who are on trial today

Yesterday at the beginning of the 8.30 Mass at Yau Ma Tei ... in the school hall with a statue of St Paul (Patron of parish) on the stage .... the main overhead projector was not working and people could not see the words of the opening song. So, after the Sign of the Cross, I looked towards St Paul and asked him to fix the projector. When I next looked at the screen, after the Gospel, I was staggered to see the projector was working again. Even more staggered after Mass when people told me the projector was ok as soon as I turned around from asking Paul for help. (Disclaimer: yesterday's Mass was that of Peter and Paul, so Paul was on special duty!)

Pope's letter to young people:
15. The word of God says that young people should be treated "as brothers" (1 Tim 5:1), and warns parents not to "provoke your children, lest they become discouraged" (Col 3:21). Young people are not meant to become discouraged; they are meant to dream great things, to seek vast horizons, to aim higher, to take on the world, to accept challenges and to offer the best of themselves to the building of something better. That is why I constantly urge young people not to let themselves be robbed of hope; to each of them I repeat: "Let no one despise your youth" (1 Tim 4:12).

c.f. readings for Sunday 13

1 Kings 19: Elijah once spent a night in a cave. The Lord then told him to stand at the mouth of the cave. Then there was a mighty wind that shattered trees and rocks. But the Lord was not in the wind. Then there was an earthquake. But the  Lord was not in the earthquake. Then there was a gentle breeze. And the Lord was in the breeze. Not long after this Elijah called Elisha to become his follower.
Dear Lord, please help us be aware of your presence in our lives

My recording of this reading

Psalm 16: Please protect me, Lord, I take refuge in you. You are the only source of all true happiness. I bless you, Lord, who guide and lead me. Even at night you direct my heart. And so my heart rejoices, my soul is glad. My body shall rest in safety now and always. You will show me the path of life, the fullness of joy in your presence, at your right hand, happiness for ever.
Thank you, Lord, for the little joys you give us each day ....and the big joy you've prepared for us in Heaven

Galatians 5.13-15: Serve one another in works of love, since the whole of the Law is summed up in the command "Love your neighbor as yourself". If you go in for non-stop criticism and personal attacks, you will destroy the church community
Jesus, help me avoid unfair/unnecessary criticism of other people

Listen

Luke 9.51-58: When the time came for Jesus to finish his life on earth, he resolutely took the road to Jerusalem. As Jesus and his disciples traveled along, they met a man who said to him "I will follow you wherever you go". Jesus replied "Foxes have holes, and birds have nests, but I have nowhere to lay my head"
Jesus, give me  courage to do what I should do

Pope's letter to young people:
14. Let us also keep in mind that Jesus had no use for adults who looked down on the young or lorded it over them.  On the contrary, he insisted that "the greatest among you must become like the youngest" (Lk 22:26).  For him age did not establish privileges, and being young did not imply lesser worth or dignity.

c.f. readings for Feast of Peter & Paul

Acts 12.1-17: About this time, King Herod began persecuting the church. He beheaded the apostle James, brother of John. He arrested Peter during Passover time. He put Peter in prison and planned to have him put on trial and killed after Passover. Each day Peter was in prison, the believers stormed heaven praying for him. On the night before he was to be put on trial, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, fastened with chains, with more soldiers at the prison entrance. Suddenly Peter's cell was filled with light, and an angel told him to get up. The chains fell from his hands. The angel led Peter out of the prison, without the guards knowing what was happening. Peter then left for another place. Herod was unable to find him.
Jesus, please help Christians who are in prison for their faith

My recording of this reading

Psalm 34: I will bless the Lord at all times, his praise always on my lips. In the Lord my soul shall make its boast, the humble shall hear and be glad. Glorify the Lord with me, together let us praise his name. I sought the Lord and he answered me. From all my terrors he set me free. The angel of the Lord is encamped around those who revere the Lord, to rescue them. Taste and see that the Lord is good. They are happy who seek refuge in him. The Lord is close to the broken-hearted. Those whose spirits are crushed he will save.
Lord, by our Bible reading and prayer, may we taste and see your goodness each day

2 Timothy 4.6-8:
As for me, my life of service to the Lord is nearly over. I have fought the good fight to the end. I have run the race to the finish. I have kept the faith. The Lord will soon give me the best of all prizes: eternal life in heaven. He will give it not only to me, but to everyone who has loved him sincerely in this life.
Jesus, help me keep running to the finish line

Matthew 16.13-20: One day Jesus asked his disciples "Who do people say the Son of Man is?" The disciples replied "Some people say you are one of the famous prophets". Jesus then asked them "And what about you. Who do you say I am?" Peter answered "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God". Jesus then said to Peter "Blessed are you, for my Father in heaven has revealed this to you. So I now say to you: you are Peter ('the rock') and on this rock I will build my church. I will give you the keys of the kingdom."
Jesus, Son of God,  please help the church to continue your work on earth

Pope's letter to young people:
13. Jesus, himself eternally young, wants to give us hearts that are ever young. God's word asks us to "cast out the old leaven that you may be fresh dough".  Saint Paul invites us to strip ourselves of the "old self" and to put on a "young" self. In explaining what it means to put on that youthfulness "which is being renewed" (v. 10), he mentions "compassion, kindness, humility, meekness and patience, bearing with one another and forgiving each other if anyone has a complaint against another".  In a word, true youth means having a heart capable of loving, whereas everything that separates us from others makes the soul grow old.

Readings from Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

2 Corinthians 5.14-19: The love of Christ is like a tsunami. It overwhelms us and sweeps us away when we remember how Jesus died for everyone. God, through Christ, has repaired his friendship with humanity. We must spread the news of this reconciliation.
"And when I think, that God his Son not sparing, sent him to die, I scarce can take it in"
- from "How Great Thou Art"
My recording of this reading

Ephesians 3.14-21: This is what I pray, kneeling before the Father from whom every family, whether spiritual or natural, takes it name: May he give you  power through his Spirit, for your hidden self to grow strong. May Christ live in your hearts through faith. Planted in love and built on love, may you continually focus on the love of Christ, until your life is filled with that love.
Glory be to him whose power  working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine. Glory be to him from generation to generation in the Church, and in Christ Jesus for ever and ever. Amen

Recording

Matthew 11.25-30: One day Jesus prayed: Father, Lord of heaven and earth, I am joyfully amazed at the way simple people understand and accept what I'm saying, while proud and clever people miss the plot. And he said to the ordinary people: Come to me, all you who are treated unfairly by unjust religious laws. I will give you peace and justice. Learn from me, and you will know peace, for I am gentle and humble of heart.
Jesus, please help people who are suffering from unjust religious laws

John 19.31-37: The next day was the Passover. To prevent the bodies remaining on the crosses during the Passover, the soldiers broke the legs of the two men crucified with Jesus. But when they came to Jesus, they saw that he was already dead. Instead of breaking his legs, they pierced his side with a spear.  Immediately there came out blood and water. And so the Scriptures were fulfilled "Not one of his bones will be broken" and "They will look on the one they have pierced".
Jesus, please help me understand how blood and water are symbols of the Eucharist and Baptism

Pope's letter to young people:
12. One of Jesus' parables relates that a "younger" son wanted to leave his father's home for a distant land.  Yet his thoughts of independence turned into dissolution and excess, and he came to experience the bitterness of loneliness and poverty. Nonetheless, he found the strength to make a new start and determined to get up and return home. Young hearts are naturally ready to change, to turn back, get up and learn from life. How could anyone fail to support that son in this new resolution?

Proverbs 11-12: Pride comes before a fall. Humility brings wisdom. A city prospers when good people are many. A city falls when good people are few. Good people are kind to animals. Bad people are cruel to animals. Good people overlook insults. Good people's speech promotes harmony in society. Worry makes our hearts heavy. Kindly words from others make us glad.

Psalm 23: The Lord is my shepherd, there is nothing I shall want. Fresh and green are the pastures where he gives me repose. Near restful waters he leads me, to revive my drooping spirit. He guides me along the right path. He is true to his name. If I should walk in the valley of darkness no evil would I fear. You are there with your crook and your staff; with these you give me comfort. You have prepared a banquet for me in the sight of my foes. My head you have anointed with oil. My cup is overflowing. Surely goodness and kindness shall follow me all the days of my life. In the Lord's own house shall I dwell for ever and ever.

Acts 20.7-12: In the city of Troas Paul and his group joined the local believers for the Breaking of Bread one Saturday night. Paul's sermon went on till the middle of the night. As Paul went on and on, a young man who was sitting on the window-sill, went to sleep and fell to the ground three floors below. He was dead when they picked him up. Paul went down to the boy and prayed over him. The boy came back to life. Paul kept on talking till dawn. That same day he left Troas

Jesus, please stop me from making offensive fun of other people

Reflection on the above Bible readings: The image of parents being mocked and beaten by their children gives only a tiny glimpse of what was happening in today's Gospel: The Creator being mocked and beaten by creatures. And the Creator didn't stop it .... he let it happen.... for the salvation of the world. Thank you Jesus!

Proverbs 10:  A wise child is a father's joy. A foolish child is a mother's sorrow. Laziness leads to poverty. Diligence leads to success. Hatred provokes disputes. Love covers over all offences. A flood of words is never without fault. Prudent people control their lips.
Lord, may my words be wise and loving

My recording of this reading

Psalm 22: My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? I call to you for help, but day and night you give no reply. I am a worm and not a man. Everyone who sees me makes fun of me. They taunt  me: "He trusted in the Lord, why doesn't the Lord help him?" Like water I am poured out, my bones no longer connected. My throat is parched, my tongue sticks to my jaws. Many evil people attack me. They make holes in my hands and my feet. They await my death. They divide my clothing among them, they throw a dice for my robe. Yet I know Lord, that  you are good and holy. I know how you heard the cries of our ancestors and you helped them. It was you who took me from the womb and entrusted me to my mother's breast. To you I was committed from my birth, from my mother's womb you have been my God. Lord, I trust in you even now. I trust you will not scorn my prayer. Even now I praise you as my Creator. May all the nations know and worship you. Lord, please help people who are in big trouble right now, especially people whose lives are in danger

Acts 19.23-20.1: In Ephesus there was a silversmith who employed many craftsmen making shrines of the local idol, Diana. The silversmith called a meeting of the city's silversmiths and said to them "Not just here in Ephesus, but in many parts of the region, this man Paul has converted many people with his argument that gods made by hand are not gods at all. This is a threat to our trade". A mob was formed and dragged two of Paul's companions to a local theatre. The town clerk eventually calmed the mob and dismissed them. By now Paul had decided to leave Ephesus. He went to Greece and spent three months there

Luke 22.54-62: The men who arrested Jesus took him to the home of the main religious leader. Peter followed at a distance. As Peter sat by a fire in the courtyard, a servant-girl said "This man was with Jesus".  Peter replied "Woman I do not know him". A little while later, another person said "You are one of them". Peter replied "I am not". About an hour later, a man said "He was certainly with them. He is from Galilee". Peter replied "I do not know what you are talking about". While he was still speaking, a rooster crowed, and the Lord looked straight at Peter, and Peter remembered what the Lord had said, "Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times". Peter went outside and cried bitterly
Jesus, don't let me ever deny that I know you

What has happened in the US is now starting to happen in other places. Some day our children will ask "why didn't you do more to stop this evil?"
