Song of Songs 3-4: The bride: On my bed at night, I sought him whom my heart loves. The groom: How beautiful you are, my love. You are wholly beautiful, my love, and without blemish.
Lord, please help me understand how much you love me

My recording of this reading

Psalms 61-65: O God, hear my cry, you who are my refuge and help. In you alone is my soul at rest. My help comes from you. Take refuge in God, everyone in trouble. Trust him at all times. O God, you are my God, for you I long. My body and soul thirst for you like a dry, weary land without water. Your love is better than life, my lips will speak your praise. On my bed I remember you. On you I muse through the night. You are the Creator of the world. You care for the earth, you give it water. To you our praise is due, wherever we are on earth.
Lord, my soul clings to you. Your right hand holds me fast

Listen

Acts 28.17-31: Not long after his arrival in Rome, Paul had a meeting with a large number of Jews. The meeting went from early morning until evening. Paul talked to them about the kingdom of God. He tried to help them believe in Jesus. Some accepted Jesus. Paul was in detention for two years, in his own rented house. He welcomed everyone who came to visit him.  With boldness and without hindrance, he taught people about the Lord Jesus Christ
Jesus, thank you for the Acts of the Apostles. May I help more people know and love you, like Paul

Listen

John 3.1-5: A religious leader said to Jesus "you are a teacher who comes from God, for no one could perform the signs that you do unless God were with him". Jesus replied "Unless you are born through water and the Spirit, you cannot enter God's kingdom"
Jesus, please help more people be baptized through water and the Spirit

Reflection on the above readings: Today we finish Acts. What an inspiring book! May it encourage us to do a little bit more to help other people know Jesus

Pope's letter to young people:
41. Young people do not want to see a Church that is silent and afraid to speak, but neither one that is always battling obsessively over two or three issues.  To be credible to young people, there are times when she needs to regain her humility and simply listen, recognizing that what others have to say can provide some light to help her better understand the Gospel

c.f. readings for Feast of Mary Magdalene

Song of Songs 3.1-4: The bride says: On my bed, at night, I sought him whom my heart loves. I sought but did not find him. So I will rise and go through the City; in the streets and in the squares, I will seek him whom my heart loves. I sought, but did not find him. The watchmen came upon me on their rounds in the City: "Have you seen him whom my heart loves?" Scarcely had I passed them, when I found him whom my heart loves.
Jesus, please increase my love for you, my longing for you.
My recording of this reading

Psalm 63: O God, you are my God, for you I long. My body and soul thirst for you, like a dry, weary land without water. Your love is better than life, my lips will speak your praise. On my bed I remember you. On you I muse through the night.
Lord, our hearts are restless, until they rest in you

Recording

2 Corinthians 5.14-19: The love of Christ is like a tsunami. It overwhelms us and sweeps us away when we remember how Jesus died for everyone. God, through Christ, has repaired his friendship with humanity. We must spread the news of this reconciliation.
"And when I think, that God his Son not sparing, sent him to die, I scarce can take it in"
- from "How Great Thou Art"
Recording

John 20.11-18: Peter and John went home. Mary Magdalene remained at the tomb, crying. When she looked inside the tomb, she saw two angels in white. She also saw Jesus standing there, though she did not recognize him. Jesus said "Woman, why are you crying?". Mary thought he was the gardener so she said to him "If you have taken him away, tell me where you have put him". Jesus said "Mary" and she recognized him. Jesus then said "I will ascend to my Father". Mary went and told the disciples all she had seen and heard.
Jesus, please bless people who are crying at funerals  today. May awareness of your presence bring them peace and strength for the days ahead

Recording

Reflection on the above readings:

Apostles' "right brain" said "no use staying at empty tomb. Can't do anything. Useless to stay". Mary Magdalene' feminine intuition said "Stay. Not sure why. But it's best to stay".

c.f. readings for Sunday 16

Genesis 18: One day at Mamre, God and two angels appeared to Abraham. At first, God and the angels looked like men.
Following the ancient custom of hospitality Abraham prepared a feast for them. God told Abraham that the town of Sodom was going to be destroyed because of the evil done there. Abraham pleaded with God not to destroy Sodom. God agreed to postpone Sodom's destruction for a while.

Dear God, please help people avoid sodomy

My recording of this reading

Psalms 14-15: So many people live and act as if God doesn't exist. Some foolish people even say there is no God. So many people have left the way of justice and truth. So many people follow the way of falsehood. Lord, help us to live as we should. Help us not to slander, help us not to wrong others
Lord, help us to stand firm in the way of goodness

Listen

Colossians 1.24 - 2.2: As I sit in my prison, I am at peace in my suffering, offering up my suffering to Christ for the sake of his body, the Church. My aim is to bind you together in love, and to keep you growing in your knowledge of God's plan for your lives.

Luke 10.38-42: Jesus one day visited the home of Martha and her sister Mary. Mary sat and listened to Jesus. Martha complained that Mary was not helping her with the serving. Jesus said "Martha, Martha, you worry and fret about so many things. Mary has chosen the one thing that matters".

Sat July 20

Yesterday I spent a long day at Lo Wu women's prison .... and of the dozens of inmates I chatted with a small group stands out: they are soon to return to their own countries after 7-8-9-10 years in detention in HK. Not a few of them have completed university study courses in prison. God bless them and keep them safe as they go home ... and ... if anyone asks them "what did you do in HK?", they can reply "I went to university"!

Pope's letter to young people:
40. The Synod recognized that "a substantial number of young people, for all sorts of reasons, do not ask the Church for anything because they do not see her as significant for their lives.  Some even ask expressly to be left alone, as they find the presence of the Church a nuisance, even an irritant.  This request does not always stem from uncritical or impulsive contempt.  It can also have serious and understandable reasons: sexual and financial scandals; a clergy ill-prepared to engage effectively with the sensitivities of the young; lack of care in homily preparation and the presentation of the word of God; the passive role assigned to the young within the Christian community; the Church's difficulty in explaining her doctrine and ethical positions to contemporary society"

Song of Songs 1-2: The bride says: Kiss me. Your love is better than wine. How right it is to love you, you whom my heart loves. The bridegroom says: How beautiful you are, my love, how beautiful you are. The bride: He has taken me to his banquet hall and his banner over me is love. The groom: Come then, my love, my lovely one, come. Show me your face and let me hear your voice, for your voice is sweet and your face is beautiful. The bride: My beloved is mine and I am his.
Dear God, please give me a lover's love for you

Psalms 52-60: Lord, I will tell everyone about how good you are. You are our Creator. Everyone should love you. Thank you for so often rescuing me from trouble. You uphold my life. Sometimes I have so many troubles and cares that I can't get to sleep.
Sometimes I wish I was a bird and could fly away to a safe place. When I fear, I will trust in you, in you whose word I praise. My heart is ready, O God, my heart is ready. I will sing, I will sing your praise. Each morning I will sing of your strength, and each morning acclaim your love.

O God, please help me to praise and love you every day

Acts 28.11-16: After three months we set sail in a ship going to Italy. Our trip took us to Syracuse, Rhegium and Puteoli before we arrived in Rome. John 2.13-22: Just before the Passover Feast, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the Temple he saw people selling cattle and sheep and pigeons, with money changers sitting at their counting tables. Jesus made a whip out of some cord, then drove the sellers out of the Temple, cattle and sheep as well. He scattered the money changers' coins, knocked their tables over, and said to the pigeon sellers "Take all of this out of here and stop turning my Father's house into a market". Some religious leaders asked him "What sign can you show us to justify what you have done?" Jesus answered "Destroy this sanctuary, and in three days I will raise it up".  The leaders replied "It has taken 46 years to build this sanctuary". But Jesus was speaking of the sanctuary that was his body, and when he rose from the dead, his disciples remembered his words.

Fri July 19

I was at Lai Chi Kok men's prison from 2pm to 6pm yesterday ... and came away quite angry ... after meeting two men .... one from Kenya and one from the Philippines ... who had been tricked/coerced by Nigerians in Addis Adaba to bring large quantities of drugs to Hong Kong....and another one, from India who had been tricked to collect an overseas parcel of drugs from Yau Ma Tei post office.

Pope's letter to young people:
39. Even though to many young people, God, religion and the Church seem empty words, they are sensitive to the figure of Jesus when he is presented in an attractive and effective way. Consequently the Church should not be excessively caught up in herself but instead, and above all, reflect Jesus Christ.  This means humbly acknowledging that some things concretely need to change, and if that is to happen, she needs to appreciate the vision but also the criticisms of young people.

Ecclesiastes 10-11: Foolish people are lazy,  and careless in speech. Wise people are diligent, and careful in speech. Young people, rejoice in your youth. Young people, remember your Creator in the days of your youth. Let everyone remember: our life is short. Don't waste your life. Live life well. Our days pass quickly and old age is soon at the doorstep. Old age: when to go uphill is difficult and even walking is not easy. In all we do, let us love and honor the Lord our God. At the end of our lives on earth, it is to God we will have to give an account of the way we have lived.
Lord, make us know the shortness of our life so that we may have more wisdom in living our lives

My recording of this reading

Psalm 51:
Have mercy on me, God, in your kindness, and cleanse me of my sin. My offences truly I know them. What is evil in your sight I have done. But in my defence please don't forget that sinfulness is part of the human condition, part of our DNA. A pure heart create for me, O God. Put a steadfast spirit within me. Give me again the joy of your help. With a spirit of fervor sustain me.
Lord,  you will not spurn a humbled, contrite heart

Acts 28.1-10:
We were on the island of Malta. The local people were really kind to us. They made us welcome. They lit a huge fire because the weather was cold and rain was falling. Paul collected a bundle of sticks and was putting them on the fire, when a snake bit his hand and held on. The locals expected him to die. But he just shook the snake into the fire. He was ok. The local Roman governor kindly gave us hospitality for three days. The governor's father was very sick in bed with fever and dysentery. He was healed when Paul prayed for him with the laying on of hands. Word of the healing got around fast, and soon everyone on the island who was sick, came and got healed
Jesus, please bless the people of Malta

John 2.1-11: Jesus, his mother and his disciples were guests at a wedding at Cana in Galilee. The wine ran out, so Jesus' mother said to him "They have no wine". Jesus replied "Woman, my time for doing special things has not yet come". His mother said to the servants "Do whatever he tells you". There were 6 big containers there, used for holding water. Each could hold more than 70 liters. Jesus said to the servants "Fill the containers with water" and they filled them up. Jesus then said "take some out and give it to the man in charge of the banquet".  When the man tasted the water, it had turned to wine. The man called the bridegroom and said "You have kept the best wine until now". This was the first public miracle done by Jesus
Jesus, help me to do whatever you tell me to do

Ecclesiastes 8-9: I see injustice in the world: good people are treated badly; bad people are treated well. I do know, however,
that good people are in the special care of God. We must try to be happy as much as we can. We must try to make the most of our lives. Spend your life with the woman you love. Whatever work you have to do, do it well.

Lord, please help me to be optimistic and cheerful

Recording

Psalms 49-50: I will turn my mind to a parable, with the harp I will solve a problem. The problem is: why do bad people prosper and succeed? The answer: at the end of their lives bad people will have to face death and judgement, just like everyone else. When we are rich, we often lack wisdom. Wealth blinds our minds and hearts. Let's not forgot God and his laws. Let's try to be good and lead good lives
Lord, please help me understand the meaning of life

Recording

Acts 27.39-44: The next day they could see land: a bay with a beach. They tried to reach the beach, but the ship ran aground on a reef and began to break up. The soldiers wanted to kill the prisoners to stop them from escaping, but Julius would not allow this. Some people swam. Some used pieces of wreckage. All of them got to shore safely
Jesus, help people in danger of shipwreck today

John 1.35-51: John the Baptist told his disciples Andrew and John that Jesus was the Chosen One of God. Andrew and John then followed Jesus. Andrew took his brother Simon to Jesus. Jesus changed Simon's name to Peter, and Peter followed Jesus. Jesus met  Philip and said to him "Follow me".  Philip called one more man, Nathanael (Bartholomew) and said to him "we have found the one Moses and the prophets wrote about. He is Jesus, son of Joseph, from Nazareth".

A Malaysian current affairs site has published this excellent report: 5 letters from drug smugglers (in HK) who don't sound like criminals (using letters sent to me)

HK is now tearing itself apart over the extradition law. People are taking sides. Each new protest march results in growing hostilities ..... and the further disintegration of society. HK is becoming like a bomb site ... destruction everywhere. The destruction can only be stopped if the govt withdraws the extradition law. Otherwise violence is going to increase to the point of anarchy and people dying. (A couple of hours after I typed these words last night, I received an email from Ming Po newspaper with the English editorial for me to record for today. Editorial says much the same - here)

Pope's letter to young people
37. Christ's Church can always yield to the temptation to lose enthusiasm because she no longer hears the Lord calling her to take the risk of faith, to give her all without counting the dangers; she can be tempted to revert to seeking a false, worldly form of security. Young people can help keep her young.  They can stop her from becoming corrupt; they can keep her moving forward, prevent her from being proud and sectarian, help her to be poorer and to bear better witness, to take the side of the poor and the outcast, to fight for justice and humbly to let herself be challenged

Ecclesiastes 6-7: Even if a person studies wisdom, what use is it? Wise person and fool both must die. Yet wisdom gives protection and strength. And wisdom reminds us that all of us make mistakes. Therefore we should be slow to condemn others.
Lord, may the memory of my own mistakes make me slow to judge other people
My recording of this reading

Psalms 47-48: All peoples, clap your hands, cry to God with shouts of joy. For the Lord, our Creator, we must love and honor,
great king over all the earth. Especially in his holy city is the Lord worthy to be praised. Praise is fitting in Mount Sion, our earth's most sacred site. O God, as we pray in your temple, our hearts meditate on your love. May peoples and rulers everywhere
acknowledge and love you as Creator of the Universe

Let all the peoples praise you, Lord. Let all the peoples praise you

Acts 27.21-37: Paul then spoke to everyone: Don't despair. There will be no loss of life. Last night an angel of God said to me: "Do not be afraid, Paul. You are destined to go to Rome. Therefore God grants you the safety of all who are sailing with you". On the 14th day, Paul took some bread, gave thanks to God in front of them all, broke it and  gave it to everyone to eat. This gave them courage. There were 276 of them on the ship
Jesus, thank you for the courage that Communion gives us

Listen

John 1: 5, 19-24: John the Baptist was sent by God as a witness to the people about the presence of the Word among them. When religious leaders asked John "Who are you?", he replied "I am, as the prophet Isaiah prophesied, a voice crying out: make a straight way for the Lord". When Jesus came to the river Jordan where John was baptizing, John said "Look, there is the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. He is far more important than I am, because he existed (as the Word) before I was born. I saw the Holy Spirit come down on him like a dove. He will baptize people with the Holy Spirit.  He is the Chosen One of God"
Jesus, lamb of God, Chosen One of God, please baptize me with the Holy Spirit
