JESUS, IF THERE IS ANYTHING THAT ANYONE CAN/SHOULD DO TO STOP THE CHAOS IN HK, PLEASE HELP/MAKE THEM DO IT!
From
a reader in the UK (re protests in HK):
No
mention of Nathan Road in this report - I saw it yesterday .... thousands of
protesters stopping traffic at junction with Jordan Road: Protests spread as HK descends into chaos
(I felt sorry for people trying to get to airport by bus ...) ***
Many photos here *** Sadly,
HK govt still unwilling to engage in any form of dialogue. May the Good Lord
move hearts on both sides of the fence.
Yesterday
before going for a late afternoon safe walk to the edge of the battle ground
that was Nathan Road, I spent the whole day at the computer preparing
individual support letters for five young Malaysian men due to be sentenced in
the High Court on Aug 26. Writing one letter is like writing an essay at
school .... but five letters is like a university exam! I'm grateful that drug
mules rarely come in groups!
On this anniversary of Hiroshima:

Conclusion of Paul Ham: H & N:
Pope's
letter to young people:
59. Blessed Isidore Bakanja was a
young man from the Congo who bore witness to his faith. He was tortured at
length for having proposed Christianity to other young people. Forgiving
his executioner, Isidore died in 1909.

Daniel 7: Once
when Daniel was asleep, he had a vision of heaven: "Thrones were put in
place and one of great age took his seat. His robe was white as snow, his hair
as pure as wool. A thousand thousand waited on him, ten thousand times ten
thousand stood before him. Then coming on the clouds of heaven was one
like a son of man. On him was conferred glory and kingship, and
people of all nations became his servants. His kingship is eternal. His empire
will never be destroyed."
Jesus, please help me understand that you are the "Son of Man" whose
kingship is eternal
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
97: The Lord is king, let
earth rejoice, the many coastlands be glad. Cloud and darkness are his robes.
His throne is justice and goodness. The skies proclaim his goodness. All peoples
see his glory. Let those who serve idols be ashamed. Let
all creation worship the Creator. Light shines forth for good
people. and joy for the upright of heart. Rejoice in the Lord, all good people.
Give glory to his holy name.
Lord, you indeed are God of the universe

Peter 1.12-18: As long as I am in this passing
world, my duty is to keep on reminding you of the truths we hold dear. Writing
this letter is one way of making sure that after my departure you will still
have a way of recalling the truths we hold dear. These truths are not cleverly
invented myths. I myself saw the majesty of our Lord Jesus Christ. He was
honored and glorified by God the Father, when the Sublime Glory himself
spoke to him and said "This is my Son, the Beloved. He enjoys my
favor". I heard this myself, spoken
from heaven, when I was with Jesus on the holy mountain.
Jesus, Beloved Son, may more and more people
accept the truth of your Good News
Recording

Matthew
17.1-8: One day Jesus took his disciples
Peter, James and John up a high mountain. On
the mountain Jesus' whole appearance changed. His face shone like the
sun. His clothes were as white as snow. The prophets Moses and Elijah
appeared and spoke with him. Peter said to Jesus "Lord, how good it is
for us to be here!" Then a bright cloud covered them with its shadow. From
the cloud came a voice: "This is my Son, the Beloved. Listen to him."
The disciples bowed to the ground. When they got up, they saw only Jesus in his
normal appearance.
Jesus, Beloved Son of God, how good it is to
spend time with you in prayer.

The madness continues in HK: marches which finish in violence,
govt leaders who are deaf and dumb. One thing I learnt from seeing the
protesters on Saturday night on Nathan Road (on my way to and from 7.30pm Mass
at St Paul's Mass Centre): there's a group of older protesters, in their 30's
and 40's, who are organising the students ... some people would say using the
students ... some people would say leading the students down Violence Avenue.
Who is this group? Anarchists? Extremists? They seem to be the ones behind
attacks on police stations .... notice their frequent presence in videos of
violence over the past two months.

Romans
6.3-11: When we were baptized,
two things happened:
1: We went into Jesus' tomb and joined him in death. We died.
2: We rose from the dead with Jesus. We came back to life. This dying and rising means we have died to
sin, and risen to a new life.
We died to an old life, and we came
back to a new life.
We have been re-born, born again.
Jesus, please help me leave my old life

John
6.1-15: Near the Sea of Galilee, a large crowd
followed Jesus, attracted by the way he healed so many sick people. Jesus climbed a hillside and
sat there with his disciples. Seeing the huge crowd, Jesus said to one of
his disciples "How can we feed so many people?" The disciple Andrew said "There's a young boy here with 5
loaves and 2 fish. But what good is that for such a huge crowd?" Jesus said "Make the people sit down". The crowd of about
20,000 sat down on the grass. Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and gave them out to all
the people. He did the same with the fish. Everyone ate as much as they
wanted to. The people, seeing this miracle, said "He really is God's great
prophet". Jesus, aware that they wanted to make him
king, slipped away and went up the hill by himself
Jesus, please bless my prayers and actions to
help others,
just as you blessed the loaves and fish

Yesterday
afternoon when I arrived at Queen Elizabeth Hospital for the monthly Mass for
patients, pastoral volunteers and families of recently deceased patients, I was
surprised to see that the carpet of the Mass meeting room was covered with white
flooring. Reason: in preparation for a possible flux of beds for injured people from last
night's protest in Mong Kok! I hope the room is not needed!

At 6.30pm when I walked to St Paul's Chapel Yau Ma Tei, I was on the footpath of traffic-less Nathan Road occupied by protesters. I could not collect mail from my post box in Nathan Road because the Post Office was closed early for security reasons I guess. When I walked home after Mass, Nathan Road was still occupied. And when I got home I was disturbed, on Now TV, to see live coverage of brewing trouble on Nathan Road in Mong Kok and near TST police station. *** Police emerge as protesters target two stations *** Latest: RTHK

Ecclesiastes 1-2:
Everything is
temporary and passing.
What's the use of all our toil?
Our life is over in a few days.
What's the use of all our toil? The same fate awaits
both wise person and fool.
Death is always just around the corner.
Dear God, please
help me understand the meaning of life. Help me understand that there is life in heaven after life on earth
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
90: O Lord you have been our refuge from one generation to the next.
Before the earth or the world
existed,
you are God, without beginning or end. For you, a thousand years are
like yesterday, come and gone so quickly. We humans have a short life,
our life is over like a sigh. Our span is 70 years,
or 80 for those who are strong. Make us know the shortness of our
life,
that we may gain wisdom of heart. In the morning, fill us with your
love.
Give success to the work of our hands.
Lord,
help us realize the shortness of our life, that we may live our lives more wisely

Colossians
3.5-11:
Kill all the bad things that trouble earthly
life:
fornication, impurity, evil desires, greed, anger, bad
temper, spitefulness, abusive language, dirty talk and lying. You have deleted your old self, and have
downloaded a fresh copy of the divine image. That image is Christ. He must
be installed in every part of your life.

Luke
12.16-21: Jesus told the people this story: There was a
rich man who, having had a good harvest from his land, thought to himself
"What am I to do? I don't have enough room to store my
crops". Then he said to himself "This is what I will do: I will pull down my
barns and build bigger ones, and store all my grain in them, and I will
say to my soul: My soul, you have plenty of good things laid by for many
years to come; take things easy, eat, drink, and have a good time". But God said to him "Fool! This very
night your earthly life will come to an end. And all your possessions, who
will get them?"
So it is when people store up treasure for themselves, instead of making themselves rich in the sight of God
Jesus, please help me to be satisfied with
what I have, and not to be greedy

Reflection on the above readings: Greed causes the rich to get richer .... which causes neglect of everyone else, especially the poor ... which causes people to take to the streets to demand housing and hospitals

Sirach 1-3: All wisdom comes from God.
Love for God is the source of wisdom. If you desire wisdom, keep the Lord's
commandments,
in private as well as in public. Keep the commandment to honor your
parents.
Respect for your father will atone for your sins.
Honor for your mother will gain you blessings. Support your father in his old age.

You should set them free from the hand of the wicked". O God, please protect your people from

will rise again to life. Those who did evil, will face condemnation".

5.1-14: Jesus again went up to Jerusalem for a Jewish

Get up, pick up your bed and walk".
The man was healed at once. He picked up his bed and walked away.

you are well, do not sin any more".
Jesus, if my sickness is due to some sin,
please forgive me and heal me

Wisdom 8-9: From my youth I sought and loved Wisdom.
Wisdom teaches us temperance, prudence, justice and fortitude. I prayed for Wisdom like this:
"God of our ancestors and Lord of mercy,
in Wisdom you made all things. Grant me Wisdom who was with you when you made
the world.
May she teach me what is right,
so that I may be a good ruler.
Lord, please give me Wisdom, as
you gave Wisdom to King Solomon
My
recording of this reading

Psalms
79-80: O God, the nations have invaded your sacred
land,
they have profaned your holy temple.
They have made Jerusalem a heap of ruins. We have become the taunt of our
neighbours,
the mockery and scorn of those who surround us. How long, O Lord, will all this last?
How long will this sorrow keep going? Do not hold the guilt of our ancestors against
us.
If their guilt is somehow influencing our situation now
please give peace and healing to everyone and everything
in our history. Let the groans of the prisoners come before
you.
Let your strong arm reprieve those condemned to die. O Lord, our God, help us and save us.
Let your face shine on us and we shall be saved.
Lord, please heal any problems
in my family tree

Romans
2.13-29: People become holy in God's sight by doing
what is right.
Listening to God's Law is not enough. We have to put it into practice in
our lives. Non-Jewish people who follow a good conscience
and do what is right,
have God's Law engraved on their hearts. What matters is not circumcision of the body,
but circumcision of the heart.
The real Jew is one who is a Jew in his
heart
Jesus, help me to love you with all my heart.
May my love for you not be just something external, but something real, in
my heart

John
4.46-53: Jesus went again to Cana in Galilee, where he
had changed water into wine. In Cana there was a royal official
whose son was dying in his home in the town of Capernaum.
The official asked Jesus to go to his home and cure his son.
"Sir", he said to Jesus, "come to my house before my child
dies". Jesus replied "Go
home. Your son will live". The official believed Jesus and started his
journey home. While on the journey, he was met by his servants who told him
the boy was alive and well. "The fever left him yesterday, they
said, "at 1pm". The father realized that this was the exact
time when Jesus had said "Your son will live". The
official and all his household then believed in Jesus
Jesus, (..name..) is sick.
Please heal him/her

Last Sunday's Gospel said "seek and you shall
find". Yesterday afternoon I went to YMT St Paul's Chapel where I last saw
my precious large O.M.I. Cross ... after a prayer meeting with sick people on
Sunday afternoon. And there it was ... in the office section near the chapel.
Thank you Jesus!
