Last night as I left an O.M.I. meeting in Tai Wai for the trip home to Jordan, my heart was sad at the news that HK airport had shut down as protesters took over. I felt really sorry for all the people whose travel plans had been wrecked by the shut down. I support the need for HK govt leaders to officially withdraw the extradition amendments and then set up a Reconciliation Commission to heal and prevent conflict ... but I strongly oppose protesters hurting other people in their war against the government. May the Good Lord quickly bring both sides to the negotiating table ... for the sake of HK.

But as I walked from Yau Ma Tei MTR station to my home in Jordan I saw a sight that made me completely forget the airport: 20 homeless people with sad faces in a huddle behind the Kowloon Central Post Office. Usually on Monday night a kind couple in a white van bring them meals around 7pm. But it was past 8pm and no meals. And apparently no meals last Monday either ... possibly the protests a cause ... many canteens shut. So I took them to a nearby food place ... after a detour to use my EPS card ... and gave them all a meal. Homelessness a growing problem in HK ... as in many places. One of many growing social problems the HK govt is neglecting to address. ... while it fails not to kowtow to the world of big business. No wonder there are protests.

Pope's letter to young people:
75. We weep when we think of all those young people who have already lost their lives due to poverty and violence, and we ask society to learn to be a caring mother.  None of this pain goes away; it stays with us, because the harsh reality can no longer be concealed.  The worst thing we can do is adopt that worldly spirit whose solution is simply to anesthetize young people with other messages, with other distractions, with trivial pursuits.

Sirach 24: Wisdom speaks: "From eternity, in the beginning, God created me. God sent  me to be everywhere on earth. Approach me, you who desire me. Whoever listens to me will stay on the road of goodness."
Lord, please help me seek wisdom and listen to wisdom's voice

My recording of this reading

Psalm 91: He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High says to the Lord "you are my refuge in whom I trust". The Lord will hide you and protect you. Under his wings you will find refuge. You will not fear any night time terror, nor any attack during the day. Upon you no evil shall fall, no plague approach where you dwell. For you has he commanded his angels to keep you safe in all your ways.
Dear God, thank you for your protection day and night

Romans 8.35-39: Nothing can separate us from the love of Jesus, even if we are in big trouble of any kind. By the power of Jesus who loves us, we can get through any trouble
Jesus, when I am in trouble, help me remember your love

Listen

John 6.52-58: The people said among themselves  "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?" Jesus replied "If you refuse to eat my flesh , and drink my blood, you will not have life in you. Anyone who does eat my flesh and drink my blood has eternal life. For my flesh is real food, and my blood is real drink. Anyone who eats my flesh and drinks my blood lives in me, and I live in them. As I, who am sent by the living Father, myself draw life from the Father, so whoever eats me will draw life from me. This is the bread come down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will live for ever"
Jesus, thank you for the gift of your Body and Blood in Holy Communion

Reflection on the above readings: For the first Christians, "the Breaking of Bread" (the Eucharist) was of prime importance. Through the centuries Christians have died for their faith in the Eucharist. Today is some places Christians are persecuted if they attend the Eucharist. On the other side of the coin: in many places the problem is apathy and loss of faith in the Eucharist .... leading to spiritual malnutrition.

Mon Aug 12

As I watched live coverage of last night's protest at Tsim Sha Tsui police station, 10 minutes walk from my home, I had the thought: 5 mins from the police station is the Kowloon base of the PLA. How much longer will the PLA be restrained from joining the action? Doesn't the government realise that refusal to communicate with the protesters is a free ticket for the PLA to become involved? Or maybe the govt is being forced by Beijing not to communicate? If so, ... I hope and pray that someone in the govt will have the courage to break ranks with Beijing ... for the sake of HK

Pope's letter to young people:
74. Even more numerous in the world are young people who suffer forms of marginalization and social exclusion for religious, ethnic or economic reasons. Let us not forget the difficult situation of adolescents and young people who become pregnant, the scourge of abortion, the spread of HIV, various forms of addiction (drugs, gambling, pornography and so forth), and the plight of street children without homes, families or economic resources.
75. As a Church, may we never fail to weep before these tragedies of our young.  May we never become inured to them, for anyone incapable of tears cannot be a mother. We want to weep so that society itself can be more of a mother, so that in place of killing it can learn to give birth, to become a promise of life.

Sirach 20-23: People who foolishly talk too much become unpopular. Wise people know when to speak and how much to speak. The talk of a foolish person is like a load on a journey. The talk of a wise person is a pleasure to hear. Lord, do not give me proud eyes. Do not let lust take control of my life. Do not let my mouth use coarse and foul language. Help me avoid sins of impurity, alone or with others.
Lord, please give me the wisdom to avoid bad talk and bad actions

My recording of this reading

Psalm 90: O Lord you have been our refuge from one generation to the next. Before the earth or the world existed, you are God, without beginning or end. For you, a thousand years are like yesterday, come and gone so quickly. We humans have a short life, our life is over like a sigh. Our span is 70 years, or 80 for those who are strong. Make us know the shortness of our life, that we may gain wisdom of heart. In the morning, fill us with your love. Give success to the work of our hands.
Lord, help us realize the shortness of our life, that we may live our lives more wisely

Romans 8.26-29: When we are not sure of what to say in prayer, we ask the Spirit to pray in us. We know that by turning everything to their good, God blesses everyone who loves him. God the Father wants us to become living images of his Son, so that his Son will be the eldest of many brothers and sisters
Jesus, brother Jesus, please help me to be more like you

John 6.42-51: The people criticized  Jesus saying "We know his father and mother. How can he say he has come down from heaven?" Jesus replied "I am the bread of life. And the bread that I will give is my flesh, for the life of the world".

Sun Aug 11

People continue to speculate as to whether troops from China will be used in HK to stop protests etc. All the experts agree such an action is most unlikely for all sorts of reasons ... but the trouble is ... the Beijing leadership does not give a hoot about reasons or reasonableness ... they have an almost blind compulsion to bully and punish ....which, maybe in the long run, will be the undoing not of the protesters ... but of the Beijing leadership!?

Pope's letter to young people:
73. Many young people are taken in by ideologies, used and exploited as cannon fodder or a strike force to destroy, terrify or ridicule others. Worse yet, many of them end up as individualists, hostile and distrustful of others; in this way, they become an easy target for the brutal and destructive strategies of political groups or economic powers.

c.f. readings for Sunday 19

Wisdom 10-19: Wisdom has been present in the world since the beginning of time. Wisdom has always been a close friend of good people. Wise people see God in the beauty of creation. Foolish people are blind to God's presence in creation. Wise people ponder God's goodness and kindness. Wise people  try to be good and kind to other people.
Lord, please help me see and imitate your goodness and kindness

My recording of this reading

Psalm 33: Ring out your joy to the Lord, all good people, for praise is fitting for loyal hearts. For the Lord loves justice and right; he fills the earth with his love. By his word the heavens were made, he spoke and the universe came into being. They are happy, whose God is the Lord, he is the source of all true joy. May your love be upon us, O Lord, since we place all our trust in you.
Lord, we trust in your precious love

Hebrews 11-12: Only faith can keep us going. Only faith helped Abraham and other famous people in the Scriptures to keep going. So many of them were weak people who were given strength by God, to be brave when life became difficult. With so many witnesses in a great cloud all around us, we too should keep running in the race we have started. We should get rid of everything that slows us down. Keep focusing on Jesus. He is running beside us. His example going to the cross gives us courage. Try to live at peace with everyone. Don't let any seed of bitterness begin to grown and make trouble. This can poison a whole community
Jesus, help me remember your presence in my heart

Listen

Luke 12:

Jesus said to his disciples: See that you are dressed for action and have your lamps lit. Be like men waiting for their master to return from the wedding feast, ready to open the door as soon as he comes and knocks. Happy those servants whom the master finds awake when he comes. I tell you solemnly, he will put on an apron, sit them down at table and wait on them. It may be in the second watch he comes, or in the third, but happy those servants if he finds them ready. When a man has had a great deal given him, a great deal will be demanded of him

Reflection on the above readings:  Hard-working parents who sacrifice everything to ensure their children have a good education, hope their children will be diligent and good people. God who has given us everything, hopes we will be good people.

Sirach 15-19: Wisdom makes us happy. Foolishness makes us sad. Humility is the pathway to wisdom. We are free to choose good or evil, wisdom or foolishness. To live a good life is something everyone can try to do. If we have done something wrong, we must ask pardon of the Lord. We must turn our back on wrongdoing, and face towards the Lord. Do not indulge in luxurious living. Too much wine and luxury corrupts the heart. Avoid gossip and slander. Be someone who can keep a secret. The way people dress tells you what work they do. The way people walk also tells a lot about them
Lord, please help me turn my back on wrongdoing. Help me face towards you

My recording of this reading

Psalm 89: I will sing for ever of your love, O Lord. Of this I am sure, that your love lasts for ever. The heavens proclaim your wonders, O Lord. The heavens are yours, the world is yours. Blessed the people who find joy in you, who walk, O Lord, in the light of your face.
Thank you, Lord, for our beautiful world

Romans 8.14-21: Everyone moved by the Spirit is a child of God. The Spirit lets us use children's language to speak to God tenderly as "Abba, Father". Since we are God's children, we are also his heirs, coheirs with Jesus, sharing his suffering so as to share his glory. What we suffer in this life can never be compared with the glorious life we will have in heaven. The whole of creation looks forward to sharing the same glory, to sharing immortality
Abba, Father, may everyone love and honor you. Help everyone get to heaven

Pope's letter to young people:
67. Anyone called to be a parent, pastor or guide to young people must have the farsightedness to appreciate the little flame that continues to burn, the fragile reed that is shaken but not broken (cf. Is 42:3).  The ability to discern pathways where others only see walls, to recognize potential where others see only peril.  That is how God the Father see things; he knows how to cherish and nurture the seeds of goodness sown in the hearts of the young.  Each young person's heart should thus be considered "holy ground", a bearer of seeds of divine life, before which we must "take off our shoes" in order to draw near and enter more deeply into the Mystery.

Sirach 12-14: No good will come to a person who persists in evil. No good will come to a person who refuses to help the poor. In prosperity you cannot always be sure who is a true friend, but in adversity you can be sure who is not a friend. Greed causes a personality to wither. The pursuit of wisdom causes a personality to blossom.
Lord, please give me the wisdom to be kind and to avoid greed

Psalm 88: Lord my God, day and night I call to you for help. Please turn your ear to my cry. For my soul is filled with evils. My life is on the brink of the grave. I am reckoned as one in the tomb. Thu Aug 8

After spending a long afternoon at Lai Chi Kok men's prison yesterday I had the sad job last night of telling a mother in Africa and a mother in Malaysia that their sons are safe and well but in detention in HK. Neither parent knew. Prisoners not allowed to make a call until 2nd month of detention (very cruel rule) and consulates in these two cases not able (?) to contact families. No letters written because one of the prisoners not very literate and the other from a location without a mailing address. Both men had been arrested at HK airport for drug trafficking: one man on July 9, the other on July 24. I feel really sorry for families when people lose contact ...  a dreadful worry for the families.
