Tues Aug 27

Yesterday morning I was at the High Court for the case of 5 young Malaysian men charged with drug trafficking. Very sad to see young people going to prison for 8 or more years ... and sad that no one from the Malaysian Consulate attended Court

In the afternoon I was at West Kowloon Court where a drug trafficking charge was dropped against 78 year old Fr Louis Zimmerman from Switzerland who was tricked by Nigerians on the internet to take drugs from Sao Paulo, Brazil to HK. Fr Louis has been out on bail for five months and has been joining me for a meal on Saturday nights at Notre Dame College in Kowloon. I went surety for him, my first time to do such. Now he is free. Thank you Jesus! ( .. and please bless his excellent legal team ...)

I support this wise suggestion: Amnesty for both sides could end crisis (and ... I totally condemn violence used by the protesters ... and I find HK media increasingly has an anti-police bias) *** Carrie Lam must end protests before Oct 1 (and see below)

One of many fault-lines in HK society: HK's overtime culture is a time-bomb

Pope's letter to young people:
105. Carlo Acutis was well aware that the whole apparatus of communications, advertising and social networking can be used to lull us, to make us addicted to consumerism and buying the latest thing on the market, obsessed with our free time, caught up in negativity. Yet he knew how to use the new communications technology to transmit the Gospel, to communicate values and beauty.

106. Carlo didn't fall into the trap. He saw that many young people, wanting to be different, really end up being like everyone else, running after whatever the powerful set before them with the mechanisms of consumerism and distraction.  In this way they do not bring forth the gifts the Lord has given them; they do not offer the world those unique personal talents that God has given to each of us. As a result, Carlo said, "everyone is born as an original, but many people end up dying as photocopies".  Don't let that happen to you!

Isaiah 1: Listen, heaven and earth, for the Lord is speaking: "The ox knows its owner and the donkey its master's crib. But my people have rebelled against me. I am tired of your hypocritical lives, tired of offerings given with dirty hands. You are so greedy for profit, always looking for bribes. Take your wrong-doing out of my sight. Stop doing evil. Learn to do good. Practise justice towards the poor. Help the oppressed, the orphan and the widow. Then, though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow."
Lord, please help me "wash my hands" by doing good for poor people

My recording of this reading

Psalm 100: Cry out with joy to the Lord, all the earth. Serve the Lord with gladness. Come before him, singing for joy. Know that he, the Lord, is God. He made us, we belong to him. We are his people, the sheep of his flock. Go within his gates, giving thanks. Enter his temple with songs of praise. Give thanks to him and bless his name. Indeed, how good is the Lord, eternal his merciful love. He is faithful from age to age.
Lord, please help me "wash my hands" by doing good for poor people

Listen

Romans 14-15: The life and death of each of us, has its influence on others. If we live, we live for the Lord. If we die, we die for the Lord. Alive or dead, we belong to the Lord. Never pass judgment on other people. Never treat other people with contempt. The kingdom of God is not about eating special food. The kingdom of God is about friendship with God, and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. Do whatever you can to help other people become stronger Christians
Jesus, please help me be a good Christian

Listen

John 10.1-10: Jesus said to the religious leaders "I am the gate of the sheepfold. If anyone enters the sheepfold by some other means than the gate, that person is a thief. The person who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the flock. The sheep hear his voice as he calls each one by name and leads them out of the sheepfold. When he has brought them out, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I have come so that people may have life, not just now but for ever"
Jesus, Good Shepherd, please help more and more people hear your voice and follow you

Water canon used against protesters for first time in HK *** My concern about water canon

Interesting comments heard recently: the focus of HK protests now is not the extradition ordinance but general unhappiness about a number of other issues .. especially the behaviour of the police; ... and ... going to China now is a nightmare as phones are checked for any message that might make any reference to the protests

Pope's letter to young people:
104. I remind you of the good news we received as a gift on the morning of the resurrection: that in all the dark or painful situations that we mentioned, there is a way out.  For example, it is true that the digital world can expose you to the risk of self-absorption, isolation and empty pleasure. But don't forget that there are young people even there who show creativity and even genius. That was the case with the young servant of God Carlo Acutis.

Sirach 51: When I was young, before I became a traveler, I prayed for wisdom. Thanks to wisdom, I have been successful in my work. And so I finish this book by praising the God who gave me wisdom: I give thanks to you, Lord and King, and praise you, God my savior. For by wisdom you have protected and supported me, and rescued me from so many troubles. I will praise you all my days and gratefully sing your praises.
Lord, thank you for the wisdom in this book. Please give me wisdom for each day

Psalm 99:
The Lord is king. He is great in Sion. His power is seen throughout the world. Among his priests were Aaron, Moses and Samuel. They prayed to the Lord and he answered their call. Let peoples everywhere praise his name. He is holy, full of power.

John 9.1-33: Once when Jesus was walking along the road, he saw a man who had been blind from birth. Jesus spat on the ground and made some mud with the spittle. He put the mud on the man's eyes, and said "Go and wash in the Siloam Pool".
The blind man went and washed, and came away able to see. When the blind man heard people criticize Jesus, he said "Ever since the world began, it has never been recorded that someone opened the eyes of a man born blind. This man must be from God"

Pope's letter to young people:
98. Clericalism is a constant temptation on the part of priests who see the ministry they have received as a power to be exercised, rather than a free and generous service to be offered. It makes us think that we belong to a group that has all the answers and no longer needs to listen or has anything to learn. Doubtless, such clericalism can make consecrated persons lose respect for the sacred and inalienable worth of each person and of his or her freedom.

c.f. readings for Sunday 21

Isaiah 62-66: The Lord says: "My eyes are drawn to the humble and contrite person who lovingly meditates on my word. Towards Jerusalem I will send peace, flowing like a river. I am going to gather the nations of every language. All peoples will know and love me
Lord, please give me more love for the Bible. Please give the world more peace. Please help all peoples know and love you

Psalm 117: O Praise the Lord, all you nations. Acclaim him, all you peoples! Strong is his love for us. He is faithful for ever.
May all the nations love and praise you, Lord

Hebrews 11-12: Only faith can keep us going. Only faith helped Abraham and other famous people in the Scriptures to keep going. So many of them were weak people who were given strength by God, to be brave when life became difficult. With so many witnesses in a great cloud all around us, we too should keep running in the race we have started. We should get rid of everything that slows us down. Keep focusing on Jesus. He is running beside us. His example going to the cross gives us courage. Try to live at peace with everyone. Don't let any seed of bitterness begin to grown and make trouble. This can poison a whole community
Jesus, help me remember your presence in my heart

Luke 13.22-30:

Through towns and villages Jesus went teaching, making his way to Jerusalem. Someone said to him, "Sir, will there be only a few saved?" He said to them, "Try your best to enter by the narrow door, because, I tell you, many will try to enter and will not succeed.  Once the master of the house has got up and locked the door, you may find yourself knocking on the door, saying, "Lord, open to us" but he will answer, "I do not know where you come from." Then you will find yourself saying, "We once ate and drank in your company; you taught in our streets" but he will reply, "I do not know where you come from. Away from me, all you wicked men!"  Then there will be weeping and grinding of teeth, when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, and yourselves turned outside. And men from east and west, from north and south, will come to take their places at the feast in the kingdom of God. Yes, there are those now last who will be first, and those now first who will be last.

Reflection on the above readings:  Ever since the human family began, humans have been dividing themselves into kingdoms, nations ... "us and them".... while the Father of the human family has been posting message after message saying that all humans are brothers and sisters of the same family

Pope's letter to young people:
98. Abuse exists in various forms: the abuse of power, the abuse of conscience, sexual and financial abuse. Clearly, the ways of exercising authority that make all this possible have to be eradicated, and the irresponsibility and lack of transparency with which so many cases have been handled have to be challenged. The desire to dominate, lack of dialogue and transparency, forms of double life, spiritual emptiness, as well as psychological weaknesses, are the terrain on which corruption thrives

Sirach 44-50: It is good to remember the famous people in history who had a special love for God. Remembering their faith and their love for God will give us courage for our daily lives. They were human and made mistakes, yet they persevered in serving the Lord. People like Abraham, Moses, David. Let us try to imitate their faith and courage.
Lord, please give me courage to live each day as I should

My recording of this reading

Psalm 98: Sing a new song to the Lord for he has worked wonders. His right hand has brought salvation. The Lord has made known his salvation. He has shown his justice to the nations. He has remembered his truth and love for the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. Shout to the Lord all the earth, ring out your joy. Sing psalms to the Lord with the harp, with the sound of music. Let the sea, the world and all peoples acclaim the King, the Lord. Let the rivers clap their hands and the hills ring out their joy at the presence of the Lord, for he comes to rule the earth. He will rule the world with justice and the peoples with fairness.

Romans 13.8-9: Avoid getting into debt, except the debt of love we owe each other. Love other people as you should, and you will keep all the commandments. Jesus, help me care about others as much as I care about myself

John 1.35-51(for Feast of St Bartholomew): John the Baptist told his disciples Andrew and John that Jesus was the Chosen One of God.  Andrew and John then followed Jesus. Andrew took his brother Simon to Jesus. Jesus changed Simon's name to Peter, and Peter followed Jesus. Jesus met  Philip and said to him "Follow me".  Philip called one more man, Nathanael (Bartholomew) and said to him "we have found the one Moses and the prophets wrote about. He is Jesus, son of Joseph, from Nazareth"
Jesus, please help me introduce more people to know and love you

Three lots of good news from 3 cases I attended at The High Court on Aug 20: a 19 year old local man (from a terrible background) received a surprisingly low sentence for a large amount of drug trafficking; a woman from Africa was granted leave to have her case heard by the Court of Appeal; and an Indonesian lady for whom I was a witness was yesterday acquitted 7:0 by a jury! Pope's letter to young people:
96. It is true that the scourge of the sexual abuse of minors is, and historically has been, a widespread phenomenon in all cultures and societies, especially within families and in various institutions; its extent has become known primarily thanks to changes in public opinion.  Even so, this problem, while it is universal and gravely affects our societies as a whole, it is especially monstrous when it takes place within the Church.  Indeed, in people's justified anger, the Church sees the reflection of the wrath of God, betrayed and insulted

Sirach 42-43: What an amazing world we live in! The Creator sure did a good job programming everything! Great is the Lord who made the sun, the moon and stars. What a beautiful creature is the rainbow! The seasons, the rain, the snow, lightning and thunder: all proclaim the glory of God. How great is God who has made such an amazing universe. How can we praise and honor him enough?

Psalm 97: The Lord is king, let earth rejoice, the many coastlands be glad. Cloud and darkness are his robes. His throne is justice and goodness. The skies proclaim his goodness. All peoples see his glory. Let those who serve idols be ashamed. Let all creation worship  the Creator. Light shines forth for good people and joy for the upright of heart. John 8.42-58: Jesus said to the people "If God were your father, you would love me, since I have come from God and I speak the truth. You avoid the truth, because your father is the father of lies, the Devil. Abraham rejoiced at the thought of my coming. He saw it in the future and was glad". The people said "You are not yet 50 years old. How could you have seen Abraham?" Jesus replied "I tell you, before Abraham ever was, I Am". The people then picked up stones to throw at Jesus for claiming to be God. But Jesus safely left the Temple.
Jesus, you who existed as God the Son from all eternity, please increase my love for the truth, and help me avoid lies

90. The fresh and exuberant lives of young people who want to affirm their personality today confront a new challenge: that of interacting with a real and virtual world that they enter alone, as if setting foot on an undiscovered global continent. Young people today are the first to have to effect this synthesis between what is personal, what is distinctive to their respective cultures, and what is global. This means that they must find ways to pass from virtual contact to good and healthy communication

Isaiah 9: The people that walked in darkness has seen a great light. On those who live in a land of deep shadow, a light has shone. For the yoke that was weighing on them, the rod of their oppressor, you have broken and removed. For there is a child born for us, a son given to us, and dominion is laid on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonder-Counselor, Mighty-God, Eternal-Father, Prince-of-Peace.
Jesus, Prince of Peace, thank you for the peace and hope and joy of your friendship and love

My recording of this reading

Psalm 113: Praise, O friends of the Lord, praise the name of the Lord. May the name of the Lord be blessed both now and for evermore. From the rising of the sun to its setting, praised be the name of the Lord. Who is like the Lord our God, above the heavens his glory. From the dust he lifts up the lowly, to put them in the company of royalty. To the childless wife he gives a home, and gladdens her heart with children.
May the Lord be praised from sunrise to sunset

Luke 1.26-38 (a): In the sixth month of Elizabeth's pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to the town of Nazareth in Galilee, to a virgin named Mary who was betrothed to a man named Joseph. The angel said to her "Mary, Rejoice! You have been greatly blessed by God. You are to conceive and have a son whom you must name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of God". Mary said to the angel, "How can this happen since I am a virgin?"

Luke 1.26-38 (b): The angel replied "The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will specially bless you. Pope's letter to young people:
89. It should not be forgotten that there are huge economic interests operating in the digital world, capable of exercising forms of control as subtle as they are invasive, creating mechanisms for the manipulation of consciences and of the democratic process. The way many platforms work often ends up favouring encounter between persons who think alike, shielding them from debate. These closed circuits facilitate the spread of fake news and false information, fomenting prejudice and hate. The proliferation of fake news is the expression of a culture that has lost its sense of truth and bends the facts to suit particular interests. The reputation of individuals is put in jeopardy through summary trials conducted online. The Church and her pastors are not exempt from this phenomenon

Psalm 96: O sing a new song to the Lord. Sing to the Lord, all the earth. O sing to the Lord, bless his name. Proclaim his help day by day. Tell among the nations his glory, and his wonders among all the peoples. It was the Lord who made the heavens. Give the Lord, you families of peoples, give the Lord glory and honor. Bring an offering and enter his temple. Worship the Lord in his sacred place. Let the heavens rejoice and earth be glad. Let the sea and all within it thunder praise.  From article above, by Chris McDonnell:

Many years ago I attended a weekend gathering at La Sainte Union College in Southampton. We had with us a Buddhist monk, who late on the Saturday afternoon, led us in a silent meditation in the College chapel. Concluding after an hour, we found we couldn't leave, for the doors were locked. When the caretaker finally arrived, he told us that he listened at the door and not hearing anything, locked up! That left 80 of us inside. Silence has its dangers...
