I spent most of yesterday at Lo Wu women's prison, grateful that

Pope's
letter to young people:
113. Perhaps your experience of fatherhood
has not been the best. Your earthly father may have been distant or absent, or
harsh and domineering. Or maybe he was just not the father you needed. I
don't know. But what I can tell you, with absolute certainty, is that you
can find security in the embrace of your heavenly Father, of the God who
first gave you life and continues to give it to you at every moment. He will be
your firm support, but you will also realize that he fully respects your
freedom.

Isaiah
9: The people that walked in darkness has seen a
great light.
On those who live in a land of deep shadow, a light has shone. For the yoke that was weighing on them,
the rod of their oppressor,
you have broken and removed. For there is a child born for
us,
a son given to us
and dominion is laid on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonder-Counselor,
Mighty-God,
Eternal-Father, Prince-of-Peace.
Lord, Prince of
Peace, thank you for the peace and hope and joy of your friendship and
love
My
recording of this reading
Psalm
106: O give thanks to the Lord for he is good.
His great love is without end. They are happy who do what is right,
who at all times remember what is just. When our ancestors came out of Egypt,
they forgot the greatness of God's love. Each time they strayed, God forgave them.
But still they continued to forget God who was their saviour,
God who had done such great things for them in Egypt.
O Lord, our God, please don't
let us forget your love

Corinthians
3.5-15: Apollos and I are servants who brought the
faith to you. I did the planting, Apollos did the watering, but God made
things grow. You are God's building. By God's grace,
I laid the foundation, the only foundation there can be: Jesus
Christ. On that foundation you can build a house with
good or poor materials.
At the end of your life, your building will be judged by God
Jesus, you are the foundation of my life. Help
me build a house with good material (= good deeds)

John
12.1-8: Six days before the Passover, Jesus went to
Bethany,
for a dinner at the home of Lazarus, Mary and Martha. Mary put expensive ointment on Jesus' feet.
Then she wiped his feet with her hair. Judas Iscariot, the disciple who was going to
betray Jesus, said "Why wasn't this ointment sold and the money given
to the poor?" He said this not because he cared about the
poor, but because he was a thief. He was in charge of the moneybag and would
steal from it. Jesus replied "Leave her alone. She is
anticipating and honoring my burial. Besides, the poor will always be with
you. But I will soon be gone"
Jesus, please help people in charge of money
not to steal

Reflection on the above readings: One Bible commentary says that the value of the ointment used by Mary was the equivalent of one year's salary. Mary's understanding of and love for Jesus was exceptional

Yesterday at Lo Wu women's prison an African lady wearing
bright red lipstick .... not exactly a common sight in prison .... joined the
queue for a chat at the entrance of her workshop. I jokingly said to her
"it's best to be careful of women wearing red lipstick", after
which she said "I just want to thank you for doing a great job helping
us" .... and then came the punch (..no pun intended) line: "Can you
please get me an Oxford dictionary?". No problem getting the dictionary,
but we both had a good laugh when I said "Yep, best to be careful of women
wearing red lipstick"!

7: A foreign king and his army attacked
Jerusalem.
The king of Judah and his people were full of fear. God told Isaiah to say to the king of Judah:

Corinthians 1.18-2.9: The language of the Cross doesn't make sense
for some people. But for us it is God's power to save.
While the Jews demand miracles and the Greeks
require philosophy, here we are preaching a crucified Christ: to the Jews
an obstacle they cannot get over, to the pagans madness. During my stay with you, I relied not on
philosophy or my own efforts, but only on the power of the Spirit. The wisdom we teach is about things no eye has
seen, and no ear has heard, things beyond human understanding - all that
God has prepared for those who love him
Jesus, crucified Lord, please increase my
faith in you

John
11.46-54: The religious leaders had a meeting to decide
what to do about Jesus.
They said "If this man keeps on doing miracles, everyone will follow him. Then
the Romans will see him as a threat, and they will wipe out our
nation". The main leader said "It is better
for one man to die for the people, than for the whole nation to be
destroyed". These words had more meaning than the leader
realized, since Jesus was to die not just for the nation, but for the
whole world. Since the leaders wanted to kill him, Jesus
went to a remote area near the desert, and stayed there with his disciples
Jesus, please help me better understand how
your death saved the world

Sirach 1-3: All wisdom comes from God.
Love for God is the source of wisdom. If you desire wisdom, keep the Lord's
commandments,
in private as well as in public. Keep the commandment to honor your parents.
Respect for your father will atone for your sins.
Honor for your mother will gain you blessings. Support your father in his old age.
Even if his mind should fail, show him kindness.
Do not despise him in your health and strength. Be gentle in the way you live your
life.
The greater you are, the more humbly you should behave.

see were top players everywhere. I thought to myself "what am I doing here

kind locals joined me for a hit, things were not too bad. Sixty years of table
tennis experience stood me in good stead!

Pope's
letter to young people:
110. Yet let me also remind you that when we
live apart from others, it is very difficult to fight against concupiscence, the
snares and temptations of the devil, and the selfishness of the world. Bombarded
as we are by so many enticements, we can grow too isolated, lose our sense of
reality and inner clarity, and easily succumb. This is especially the case with
young people, for whenever you are
united, you have marvellous strength. Whenever you are enthused about
life in common, you are capable of great sacrifices for others and for the
community. Isolation, on the other hand, saps our strength and exposes us to the
worst evils of our time.

Isaiah
6: In the year 740 B.C.,
I had a vision of the Lord God in Heaven: Above the Lord were 6 angels who cried out
"Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God.
His glory fills the whole earth." Then I heard a voice asking
"Whom shall I send? Who will be our messenger?" I answered "Here I am, send
me." Then the Lord sent me to be a prophet to the

Psalm
104: Bless the Lord, my soul!
Lord God, how great you are. You make the clouds your chariot.
You walk on the wings of the wind. You make springs gush forth in the valleys.
They give drink to all the animals of the field. You make grass grow for the cattle
and plants to provide food for people. You give us wine to cheer our hearts
and oil to make our faces shine. You made the moon to mark the months.
The sun knows the time for its setting. How many are your works, O Lord.
In wisdom you have made them all. The earth is full of your riches
and the sea is swarming with life. All things, great and small, look to you for
food.
You open your hand, they have their fill. You send forth your spirit, and life is
created.
You renew the face of the earth. I will sing to the Lord all my life.
May my thoughts be pleasing to him.
Bless the Lord, my soul!

11.1-44: Lazarus and his sisters Mary and Martha lived
in the village of Bethany. When Lazarus became very sick, the sisters sent
a message to Jesus "Lord, your dear friend is very sick". By the time Jesus and his disciples
arrived in Bethany,
Lazarus was dead and buried for 4 days. Martha said to Jesus "If you had been
here, my brother would not have died". Jesus replied "I am the resurrection and
the life. If anyone believes in me, he will have life after death". Jesus said to Mary and Martha "Where have
you put him?" Jesus cried as he went to the tomb. The tomb was a
cave with a stone at the entrance. Jesus said "Take the stone away".
Then he called out in a loud voice "Lazarus, come out!"
The dead man came out, wrapped in burial
clothes. Jesus said "Unwrap him and let him go free".

Isaiah 5: My friend had a vineyard on a fertile
hillside.
He planted choice vines in it and expected it to produce good grapes.
But it produced only sour grapes.
That vineyard is Israel. Its owner is the Lord.
That chosen plant is the people of Judah. The Lord expected the people of Israel to
produce justice.
But those people have produced only bloodshed and injustice. Those people have no time to think about the
Lord.
They have no interest in what he has done for them. So they are consigning themselves to ruin.
The vineyard will be trampled on and become a waste. Invaders will attack Israel.
The people of Israel will be taken into exile.
All because they rejected the Lord.

103: My soul, give thanks to the Lord.
All my being, bless his holy name. My soul, give thanks to the Lord
and never forget all his blessings. It is he who forgives all your guilt,
who heals every one of your ills. It is he who fills your life with good things,
renewing your youth like an eagle's life. The Lord is compassion and love,
slow to anger and rich in mercy. As the heavens are high above the earth
so strong is his love for those who love him. As far as the East is from the West,
so far does he remove our sins. As a father has compassion on his
children,
the Lord has pity on all who love and honor him. Give thanks to the Lord, all his angels,
who heed the voice of his word. Give thanks to the Lord, everyone and
everything.
My soul, give thanks to the Lord!

Pope's
letter to young people:
107. Don't
let them rob you of hope and joy, or drug you into becoming a slave to
their interests. Dare to be more, because who you are is more important
than any possession. What good are possessions or appearances? You
can become what God your Creator knows you are, if only you realize that you are
called to something greater. Ask the help of the Holy Spirit and
confidently aim for the great goal of holiness. In this way, you will not
be a photocopy. You will be fully yourself

The
Book Blog:
4 readings + recordings
Comments welcome here
Readings are from
Simple Bible
Isaiah 2: In the days to come, the mountain of the
Lord's Temple
will be specially blessed. All the nations will come to it and say:
"Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord,
that he may teach us his ways
so that we may walk in his paths". When they learn the ways of the Lord,
then the nations will hammer their swords into ploughshares,
their spears into sickles. Nation will not lift sword against nation,
there will be no more training for war. O House of Jacob, come,
let us walk in the light of the Lord!
Lord, please help world leaders
do more for peace in our world
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
101: My song is of mercy and justice.
I sing to you, O Lord. I will try to walk with blameless
heart.
I will try to give my attention to what is good, not what is bad. People who slander others, people of proud
looks,
these will not be my friends.
People who are good and do good,
these will be my friends.
Dear Lord, please help me to
avoid bad company

Romans
15.4-13: Learn hope from the
Scriptures, from the
example of people who did not give up,
and were helped by God. May the God of hope bring you such joy and
peace in your faith, that the power of the Holy Spirit will remove all
bounds to hope
Holy Spirit of God, help me understand that no
situation in this life is ever hopeless,
that you can enlighten even the
darkest place
Listen
John
10.11-14: Jesus said to the religious leaders "I am
the Good Shepherd.
The Good Shepherd is one who lays down his life for his sheep. A hired man, since he has no real concern for
the sheep,
abandons them and runs away if he sees a wolf coming. I am the Good Shepherd.
I know my own sheep, and my own sheep know me"
Jesus,
Good Shepherd, please help me to be a
good sheep, and a good shepherd

Reflection on the above readings: Jesus, our world urgently needs leaders who are good shepherds!
