Isaiah 28-30: God says: "I will punish priests and prophets who mislead the people. Their mouths utter lies. They honor me only with lip-service while their hearts are far from me. Religion has become just a mental exercise, just a series of human laws." The Lord appeals to everyone: trust in him and cease to do evil. Salvation is found in conversion and tranquility. Strength is found in complete trust in the Lord.
Lord, please help us honor you with our hearts as well as our heads
My recording of this reading

Psalm 113: Praise, O friends of the Lord, praise the name of the Lord. May the name of the Lord be blessed both now and for evermore. From the rising of the sun to its setting praised be the name of the Lord. Who is like the Lord our God, above the heavens his glory. From the dust he lifts up the lowly, to put them in the company of royalty. To the childless wife he gives a home and gladdens her heart with children.
May the Lord be praised from sunrise to sunset

Listen

1 Corinthians 10.16-11.1: The cup that we bless is a communion with the blood of Christ. The bread that we break is a communion with the body of Christ. Avoid anything to do with idol worship.  It doesn't make sense to share in the table of the Lord and in the table of demons. Whatever you eat, whatever you drink, whatever you do at all, do it for the glory of God. Never do anything offensive to anyone. Try to be helpful to everyone at all times, not anxious for your own advantage, but for the advantage of others, so that they may be saved. Take me for your model, as I take Christ.
Jesus, please help me imitate you in my daily life

Listen

John 13.34-35: Jesus said to his disciples at the meal "I give you a new commandment: love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also must love one another. By this love you have for one another, everyone will know that you are my disciples". Jesus, please help all Christians to love one another as you have loved us

Reflection on the above readings: Loving as Jesus loved is not an option or suggestion or invitation. It's a .... commandment

The madness continues in HK: RTHK *** HKFP *** JPs denied access to police holding centre *** See below!

If Beijing wants to stop the protests in HK, it must give the HK government complete freedom to deal with the situation as soon as possible. Otherwise Beijing is going to finish up with a huge loss of face on October 1 when HK's biggest ever march/gathering will get world media coverage ahead of the "biggest ever military parade" in Beijing. HK's Oct 1 protest will "rain on the parade" in Beijing!

Isaiah 26-27: Trust in the Lord for ever, for the Lord is an everlasting Rock. Lord, we trust in you, we hope in you. At night our hearts long for you. Lord, when we shelter under your protection you give us peace.
Lord, please help us trust you more

My recording of this reading

Psalm 112: Happy are people who love and honor the Lord, who take delight in his commands. The children of such people will be blessed. Such people are a light in the darkness for others. Such people are generous, merciful and just. They take pity and help those in need. They conduct their affairs with  integrity. Open-handed they give to the poor. Their justice and goodness will never be forgotten.
Lord, please help me do more for the poor

Listen

1 Corinthians 9.12-27: I put up with anything, rather than obstruct the Good News of Christ in any way. I make myself all things to all people, in order to save some. All the runners at the stadium are trying to win, but only one of them gets the prize. You must run in the same way, meaning to win the gold medal of eternal life. That is how I run, intent on winning. Therefore I try to stay in top condition, avoiding sloppy living
Jesus, may I run a good race till my last day

Listen

John 13.21-30: Jesus became visibly upset and said to his disciples at the meal. "One of you is going to betray me. It is the one to whom I give a piece of bread  that I have dipped in the dish". He dipped the piece of bread and gave it to Judas Iscariot. Immediately, Satan entered Judas. Jesus said to Judas "What you are going to do, do quickly". Judas left the meal. Night had fallen
Jesus, please don't let me ever be disloyal to you

HK born Australian citizen - English teacher Rachel Smyth - beaten up by police *** HK protests have galvanised groups in Australia who see parellels with Tibet and Xinjiang

c.f. readings for Sunday 23

Wisdom 10-19: Wisdom has been present in the world since the beginning of time. Wisdom has always been a close friend of good people. Wise people see God in the beauty of creation. Foolish people are blind to God's presence in creation. Wise people ponder God's goodness and kindness. Wise people  try to be good and kind to other people.
Lord, please help me see and imitate your goodness and kindness

My recording of this reading

Psalm 90: O Lord you have been our refuge from one generation to the next. Before the earth or the world existed, you are God, without beginning or end. For you, a thousand years are like yesterday, come and gone so quickly. We humans have a short life, our life is over like a sigh. Our span is 70 years, or 80 for those who are strong. Make us know the shortness of our life, that we may gain wisdom of heart. In the morning, fill us with your love. Give success to the work of our hands.
Lord, help us realize the shortness of our life, that we may live our lives more wisely

Listen

Philemon 9-25: While here in prison, I have helped someone you know to become a believer. He is carrying this letter - Onesimus. I'm sending him back to you, no longer your slave, but your brother in Christ. Please welcome him as you would welcome me. And let me pay for anything he stole from you. May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you
Jesus, please put an end to slavery in the world

Listen

Luke 14.25-27: Great crowds accompanied Jesus on his way and he turned and spoke to them. "If any man wants to be my disciples he must realise that I am more important than his father, mother, wife, children, brothers, sisters, yes and his own life too. Anyone who does not carry his cross and come after me cannot be my disciple"

Reflection on the above readings: Most translations of today's Gospel have Jesus saying we must hate our own parents etc ....which is ridiculous ...Jesus would never say such a thing. What he is saying is that our relationship with him must be number one. In fact, if Jesus is No. 1 in my life, my love for parents etc will increase!

Sat Sep 7

I spent yesterday afternoon at Lai Chi Kok men's prison, and was sad to meet two drug mules from Tanzania - the first Tanzanians for 20 months. Anti-drug campaign must keep going!

My train home to Jordan from Lai Chi Kok did not stop at Prince Edward station since the station had been closed because of a protest at its entrance *** This first week of the school year has seen many secondary students holding protests outside their schools. The voices of the girls calling out for the protection of HK is especially poignant (and see   below!)

Isaiah 25: On Mount Zion in Jerusalem, the Lord will prepare for all peoples a banquet of rich food, a banquet of fine wines. On this mountain he will delete Death. The Lord will wipe away the tears from every cheek. Lord, you are my God, I extol you, I praise your name. You, Lord, are a refuge for the poor, a refuge for the needy in distress.
Lord, please give hope and courage to people who are sad and troubled in the world today

My recording of this reading

Psalm 111: I will thank the Lord with all my heart. Great are the works of the Lord, to be pondered by all who love him. His goodness stands firm for ever. The Lord is compassion and love. His precepts are for all peoples and all times. He is to be honored by all nations. To love and honor the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.
Dear Lord, please help me to love and honor you every day

1 Corinthians 6.18-20: We should respect our bodies as a gift from the Lord. Our bodies are not meant for fornication. Avoid sexual activity that avoids commitment. Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who lives in you. Let people know that your body is not something to be profaned
Jesus, please help me avoid sex outside marriage

Listen

John 13.1-15: While Jesus and his disciples were eating a meal just before the Passover, Jesus got up from the table, removed his outer clothing, and wrapped a  towel around his waist as an apron. He then poured water into a basin, and like a slave, began to wash the disciples' feet,  wiping them with the towel he was wearing. After washing their feet he said to them "You are right in calling me Master and Lord. If I, then, the Lord and Master, have humbly served you, you should humbly serve one another. I have given you an example so that you may copy what I have done for you"
Jesus, please help us to serve other people humbly, just as you humbly served the disciples

Isaiah 20-24: Trust in the Lord, not in military might. Israel is going the wrong way in forgetting God's protection. It has no thought for its Maker, no eyes for him who shaped everything long ago. The reason why the earth is without rain and crops is that people have forgotten their Creator.
Lord, please increase my trust in you, and help all nations remember you

My recording of this reading

Psalms 109-110: O God whom I praise, do not be silent, for people are bombarding me with  words of hate. They speak to me with lying tongues and attack me without cause. They repay me evil for good. While I pray for them,  they show me hatred. I have become an object of scorn. Help me, Lord my God.
Lord, when people are unkind to me, please give me the grace to pray for them

1 Corinthians 5.8-11: Get rid of all evil and wickedness from your life. Replace them with sincerity and truth. People who do wrong will not inherit the kingdom of God: people of immoral lives, idolaters, adulterers, catamites, sodomites, thieves, usurers, drunkards, slanderers and swindlers. Some of you were like that once, but now you have been washed clean and sanctified by Jesus Christ and his Spirit
Jesus, help me avoid doing bad things. Help me do more good things

Listen

John 12.42-46: Many people believed in Jesus, even some important people, but they did not admit it, through fear of being expelled from the prayer hall. They put honor from people before the honor that comes from God. Jesus said openly "I, the light, have come into the world, so that whoever believes in me, need not stay in the dark any more".
Jesus, true Light of the world, please help me put honor from you before honor from people

Pope's letter to young people:
115. For God, you have worth; you are not insignificant. You are important to him, for you are the work of his hands. That is why he is concerned about you and looks to you with affection. "Trust the memory of God: his memory is not a 'hard disk' that 'saves' and 'archives' all our data. His memory is a heart filled with tender compassion, one that finds joy in 'deleting' from us every trace of evil". He does not keep track of your failings and he always helps you learn something even from your mistakes. Because he loves you. Try to keep still for a moment and let yourself feel his love. Try to silence all the noise within, and rest for a second in his loving embrace.

Isaiah 13-19: God will punish the world for its evil-doing. Then  peoples' hearts will turn back to their Creator. Then people will no longer worship idols made by human hands. Instead, people will look towards their Creator. The nations will be converted and know the Lord. Egypt and Assyria will be blessed like Israel. John 12.23-33: Jesus said to his apostles Andrew and Philip "Now the time has come for me to be glorified.  Unless a wheat grain goes into the ground and dies, it remains only a single grain. But if it dies, it yields a rich harvest. Now sentence is being passed on this world. Now Satan is to be defeated. And when I am lifted up from the earth, I shall draw all people to myself". By these words, Jesus indicated the kind of death he would die
Jesus, lifted up on the Cross, you are the Saviour of the world

Reflection on the above Bible readings: Today's readings have a strong "universal" theme - Jesus is the Saviour of all the peoples of the world. May all Christians try to introduce him to someone who doesn't yet know his love.

My first reaction to secondary students staging protests instead of going to class was "they would be better off in class". But when I watched videos showing the passion of the students as they bravely took a stand for the protection of HK's basic freedoms, I began to think "Good on them". Dumb/ruthless Beijing just doesn't understand basic psychology as far as HK people - young and old - are concerned: the more you try to bully them the more strongly they will re-act

Pope's letter to young people:
114. In Gods word, we find many expressions of his love. There are times when God speaks of himself as an affectionate father who plays with his children.
At other times, he speaks of himself as filled with the love of a mother whose visceral love for her children makes it impossible for her to neglect or abandon them. He even compares himself to a lover who goes so far as to write his beloved on the palm of his hands, to keep her face always before him

Isaiah 10-12: Woe to legislators who issue unjust laws, laws which exploit poor people. A day of reckoning is coming when unjust legislators will answer to the Lord. The Lord will send a good and just king to rescue the poor. A shoot will spring from the stock of Jesse, on him the spirit of the Lord will rest, a spirit of wisdom and insight, a spirit of counsel and power, a spirit of knowledge, a spirit of love and respect for the Lord. He will judge justly and the land will know peace. The country will be filled with the knowledge of the Lord. Exiles will return to their homeland. Then we will draw water joyfully from the springs of salvation, for great in our midst will be the Holy One of Israel.
Lord, please help governments to do more for poor people

My recording of this reading

Psalm 107: O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His great love is without end. Let them say this, those the Lord has helped, people from east and west, north and south. Some people wandered in the desert, lost and unable to find their way to safety. In their hunger and thirst they cried to the Lord for help. He rescued them and showed them the way to safety. Let them thank the Lord for his love, for he fills the hungry with good things. 01

Some people were prisoners in misery and chains, living in darkness and gloom. In their distress they cried to the Lord for help. He rescued them and restored their freedom. Let them thank the Lord for his goodness, for he shatters the iron bars of prisons. 02

Some people were sick on account of their sins, unable to eat,  and close to death. They cried to the Lord in their need. He healed them and saved them from the grave. Let them thank the Lord for his love, for the wonders he does for us. 03

Some people sailed to the sea in ships and were caught in terrifying storms. They cried to the Lord in their need and he calmed the sea and wind. Let them thank the Lord for his love, for the wonders he does for us. Whoever is wise should meditate on these things and reflect on the love of the Lord.
Thank you Lord, for your rescuing love

John 12.12-19: People who had gone to Jerusalem for the Passover, heard that Jesus was coming down to Jerusalem from Bethany. They used palm branches as they went out to meet him, shouting "Hosanna! Blessings on the King of Israel who comes in the name of the Lord". Jesus rode a young donkey down the hill, just as the Scriptures had predicted: "Daughter of Sion, behold! Your king is coming, mounted on the colt of a donkey". Some religious leaders said to each other "Look, there is nothing you can do. The whole world is running after him".
Jesus, humbly entering Jerusalem on a donkey, may you be known and welcomed and praised by the whole world

---------------------------

So many protesters arrested lately ....most of them released on bail .... the backlog of court cases and appeals etc will put enormous strain on the judicial system. Not to mention there's not much room in HK's prisons .... no place to lock up 10,000 people let alone 1,000,000. Beijing's bullying tactics are continuing to pour oil on the fire which it started. A huge own-goal.
