I spent yesterday morning at Lai King young women's prison ..... and came away with many jobs ... mainly to help prisoners pass on information to their legal teams. Sometimes my extra information (especially about complicated backgrounds) to legal teams helps prisoners get a better deal when they go to trial

It's a miracle that no one has died in the protests so far, but how long will the miracle continue as protesters raise their level of violence? Will we see a repeat of 1967 when 51 people died?

Pope's letter to young people:
119. The same Christ who, by his cross, saved us from our sins, today continues to save and redeem us by the power of his total self-surrender. Look to his cross, cling to him, let him save you, for those who accept his offer of salvation are set free from sin, sorrow, inner emptiness and loneliness

Isaiah 41-42: The Lord says to his people Israel: "I have chosen you. I have not rejected you. Do not be afraid, for I am with you. Stop being anxious and worried. I am your God. I give you strength and help. Here is my servant whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom my soul delights. I have endowed him with my spirit that he may bring true justice to the nations. He does not cry out or shout aloud. He does not extinguish the wavering flame. I have called him to serve the cause of right, to open the eyes of the blind, to free captives from prison".
Lord, please help me understand how "my servant" is Jesus

My recording of this reading

Psalm 118: Give thanks to the Lord for he is good. His love has no end. Let the sons of Israel say: "His love has no end." Let those who honor the Lord say: "His love has no end." It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in humans. It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes. I was falling, falling, falling, but the Lord was my helper. The Lord is my strength and my song. He is my saviour. The Lord's right hand has triumphed. His right hand has raised me up. I shall not die, I shall live
and recount all his deeds. The stone which the builders rejected has become the corner stone. This is the work of the Lord, a marvel in our eyes. This day was made by the Lord. We rejoice and are glad.

Lord, we give thanks to you, for you are good. Your love has no end

Listen

1 Corinthians 13.1-13: If I am the most brilliant speaker, but don't have love, I am just a gong booming. If I understand all mysteries, and if I have a faith that will move mountains, but don't have love, I am nothing. Love is always patient and kind. It is never jealous, never boastful, never conceited, never rude or selfish. Love does not take offence. It's not resentful. Love delights in the truth. Love is always ready to excuse, to trust, to hope and to endure whatever comes. Love is virtue Number One, greater than faith or hope.
Jesus, please help me love like you

Listen

John 15.1-8: At the meal, Jesus said to his disciples "I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. Each branch in me that bears no fruit, he cuts off. Each branch that does bear fruit, he prunes to make it bear even more fruit. As a branch cannot bear fruit by itself, but must remain part of the vine, so you can't bear fruit unless you remain in me. Cut off from me, you can do nothing. If you remain in me, and my words are alive in your heart, you can ask for any good thing and you will get it. It is to the glory of my Father that you should bear much fruit".
Jesus, please help me stay close to you. Help me bear much fruit

About 30 years ago I several times climbed Lion Rock Mountain - right to top of Lion's head - not an easy feat ... see video of hike route here *** Last Friday afternoon and evening, thousands of peaceful protesters lit up Lion Rock Mountain for the Moon Festival  *** Group included 87 year old Cardinal Joseph Zen! *** Yesterday's violent protesters *** Video: plainclothes  police subdue men at bus stop

Isaiah 36-40: "Console my people, console them" says the Lord. A voice cries out "Prepare in the wilderness a way for the Lord. Make a straight highway for our God across every desert. Let every valley be filled in, every mountain and hill be laid low.
Then the glory of the Lord shall be revealed and all people will see the Lord's glory." Go up on a high mountain, joyful messenger to Zion. Shout with a loud voice, joyful messenger to Jerusalem. Shout to the towns of Judah "Here is your God".

1 Corinthians 12.12-30: A human body is made of many parts: arms, legs, muscles, eyes etc. Every part is important and needed for the body to be healthy. The church is like a body. The spiritual health of each member affects the health of the whole body

Beijing continues to stop the HK govt from taking steps to fix the present mess which is largely Beijing's making. October 1 is shaping up as a huge date in the history of China and HK: the biggest ever military parade in Beijing and the biggest ever number of people taking part in protests in HK. A huge slap in the face for Beijing. An own goal. And on Dec 10 if HK's students are awarded the Nobel Peace prize (possibly going to Joshua Wong alone), Beijing will have itself to blame.

Pope's letter to young people:
117. When God asks something of you, or simply makes you to face life's challenges, he is hoping that you will make room for him to push you, to help you grow. He does not get upset if you share your questions with him. He is concerned when you don't talk to him, when you are not open to dialogue with him. God's love is so real, so true, so concrete, that it invites us to a relationship of openness and fruitful dialogue.

c.f. readings for Sunday 24

Exodus 32: Moses stayed on the mountain about 40 days. During this time the people told Aaron to make them a god out of gold. Aaron made a golden calf and the people worshipped it. On the mountain, God said to Moses "Go down now, because the people have been unfaithful to me. I will punish them, but of you I will make a great nation." Moses pleaded with God not to punish the people. When Moses, carrying the two tablets, came down the mountain he saw the people partying before the golden calf. He threw down the tablets and broke them. He smashed the golden calf. The men of the tribe of Levi were then commissioned to go through the camp and kill many men. About 3,000 men were killed.
Dear God, please don't let us ever worship anyone or anything except you

Psalm 51: Have mercy on me, God, in your kindness, and cleanse me of my sin. My offences truly I know them. What is evil in your sight I have done. But in my defence please don't forget that sinfulness is part of the human condition, part of our DNA. A pure heart create for me, O God. Put a steadfast spirit within me. Give me again the joy of your help. With a spirit of fervor sustain me.
Lord,  you will not spurn a humbled, contrite heart

Listen

1 Timothy 1.12-17: I thank Christ Jesus our Lord who called me into his service, even though I was an offender. Mercy was shown me, because I was acting in ignorance. Christ Jesus came into the world to save offenders. I myself am the greatest offender. Christ Jesus' patience and mercy to me is available to all offenders. I am a demonstration model of Christ's mercy
To the eternal King, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen

Luke 15.11-24: Jesus told this story: a man had two sons. The younger said to his father "Father, give me the share of the estate that would come to me". So the father divided his property between them. A few days later, the younger son left for a distant land where he wasted his money in wild living. When he had used all his money, that country had a severe famine, and he began to feel the pinch, so he got a job on a farm  feeding  pigs. He would willingly have eaten the pigs' food, but no one offered him anything. Then he came to his senses and said "How many of my father's paid servants have more food than they want, and I am dying of hunger. I will leave this place and go to my father and say: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I no longer deserve to be called your son. Treat me as one of your paid servants." So he left the place and went back to his father.
While he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was moved with pity. He ran to the boy, clasped him in his arms and kissed him tenderly. Then the son said "Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I no longer deserve to be called your son". But the father said to his servants "Quick! Bring out the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the calf we have been fattening, and kill it. We are going to have a feast, a celebration, because this son of mine was dead and has come back to life. He was lost and is found."
Jesus, please help me understand how much you love me, no matter what  mistakes I make

Reflection on the above readings: The younger son had his speech ready, but the father never let him get the second part out. The father was not interested in the son's past, not interested in the son's mistakes/sins .... interested only in the present and the future .... rejoicing that the son was safely back home

Yesterday afternoon at Lai Chi Kok men's prison it was good to see the inmates enjoying a special meal for Mid-Autumn. The meals are not a surprise: all menus are posted on a bulletin board in advance. Just like a restaurant .... and no bill!

Late Thursday afternoon on my FB: Addis Ababa Drug Trade - I posted a letter from a Kenyan woman who in Addis was raped by a Nigerian who then forced her to accept drugs into her body and go to HK, where she is now facing a 10 year prison sentence. I boosted the post, the target being women 20-40 in Addis. In 24 hours the post reached 63,000 people and had 698 engagements. The boost will continue for another week. I hope it does something to stop the Nigerian gang in Addis.

Readings for Feast of The Cross

Numbers 21: In order to avoid the land of Edom, the Israelites headed towards the coastline. But the people again criticized God and Moses. So God sent snakes among the people, and many people died. The people then said to Moses "We have sinned; please pray for us to save us". Moses prayed for them, and God heard his prayer. God told Moses to make a bronze snake and put it on a pole. Anyone bitten by a snake could then look at the bronze snake and live.
Jesus' words (John 3.13): "The Son of Man must be lifted up as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him".
Recording

Psalm 78b: May future generations not be like our ancestors who so often were unfaithful to God. Even though our ancestors had seen God part the sea, even though they had seen him provide food and water for them in the desert, still they went on sinning. Yet he who is full of compassion forgave and spared them. He remembered they were only weak humans. Eventually he brought them to the promised land and gave a home to each of Israel's tribes. But still they sinned by building mountain shrines and serving idols. Then God raised up David to be their leader. God called him from looking after sheep to be the shepherd of his people.
Lord, help us not to forget all you have done for us

Recording

Philippians 2.6-11: His state was divine, yet Christ Jesus did not cling to his equality with God, but emptied himself to assume the condition of a slave and became as humans are. And being as all humans are, he was humbler yet, even to accepting death, death on a cross. But God raised him high, and gave him the name which is above all other names, so that all beings in the heavens, on earth and in the underworld, should bend the knee at the name of Jesus, and that every tongue should acclaim Jesus Christ as Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Recording (song: The Philippians Hymn)

John 3.13-17: Jesus said to Nicodemus: "No one has gone up to heaven except the one who came down from heaven, the Son of Man who is in heaven; and the Son of Man must be lifted up, as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him". Yes, God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not be lost but may have eternal life. For God sent his Son into the world not to condemn the world, but so that through him the world might be saved.
Jesus, only Son of God the Father, thank you for coming into this world. Please help more and more people believe in you

Soon you must return to tasks
That sicken and appall:
The calumnies will never cease,
Look only to the sign of peace,
The Cross upon the wall.

That measures every chart;
This square and level overrules
The subtle calculus of fools
By a celestial art.

I WISH ALL DEAR READERS A HAPPY MID-AUTUMN FESTIVAL!

Usually on Thursday nights I have a meal with a group of about 30 homeless people who sleep at McDonald's or in parks. Last night a little bit different: I was one of several hundred guests at the South China Morning Post annual "Spirit of HK" awards ceremony. Chief Executive Carrie Lam was guest of honour and gave a very positive message. (Maybe some photos on tomorrow's menu)

Pope's letter to young people:
116.
God's love is a love that does not overwhelm or oppress, cast aside or reduce to silence, humiliate or domineer. It is the love of the Lord, a daily, discreet and respectful love; a love that is free and freeing, a love that heals and raises up. The love of the Lord has to do more with raising up than knocking down, with reconciling than forbidding, with offering new changes than condemning, with the future than the past.

Some special readings for Mid-Autumn Festival!

Genesis 1-2: God made the world. God made the sun, the moon and the stars....the whole universe. God said "Let there be light" and there was light. God made the earth with all its plants and trees and animals and fish and birds. God made the first people ..... the first man and first woman. God made them in his own image and said to them "Be fruitful, multiply and fill the earth." God saw all that he had made, and all of it was good, very good
Dear God, thank you for making such a beautiful world!

My recording of this reading

Psalm 8: How great is your name, O Lord our God, through all the earth. When I see the heavens, the work of your hands, the moon and stars which you have arranged, then I stop and think: what are we insignificant humans that you should care about us? Yet you have put us in charge of the world. Everything is subject to our control.
How great is your name, O Lord our God, through all the earth

Listen

Revelation 12.1-6: A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman, dressed in the sun, standing on the moon, crowned with 12 stars. She was giving birth to a child, and she cried out in the pain of childbirth. Then a second sign appeared: a huge red dragon, which wanted to eat the child. The woman gave birth to a son, the ruler of all nations. The son was taken straight up to heaven, to God on his throne. The woman escaped to safety in the desert, to a place prepared for her by God

John 1.1-14: From all eternity the Word existed. The Word was with God the Father. The Word was God the Son. The Word was the source of life for all creatures. The Word became a man, and lived among us. We saw his glory, full of grace and truth. Many people did not recognize and did not accept the Word. But to everyone who did accept him, he gave power to become children of God

Thu Sep 12

Yesterday, in a W/App from their father, I received 5 letters from 5 young children in Africa to their mother in prison in HK for drug trafficking .... the mother having been desperate for money when the husband was ill for a long time .... the mother becoming a victim to a well-known Drug Lord in Hong Kong who recruited her. I don't usually read family mail, but just the first line of each letter was heart-breaking. The 5 letters were printed and posted to the prison yesterday afternoon.

Also heart-breaking is the letter from a South African mother of 4, serving a 6 year prison term for drug trafficking - her story, and her warning to others: here. Yesterday morning I posted a link to this letter on my FB: Johannesburg Drug Trade, then boosted the post. By last night it had reached 4075 people and had 387 engagements. My target audience in the boost was "women 20-45 years old".

Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, the ears of the deaf unsealed. Then the lame shall leap like a deer, and the tongues of the dumb sing for joy. When I arrived home around 8.30 on Monday night after an O.M.I. meeting, before I started work on this website and did the usual recording for Ming Pao, I checked the Court List for yesterday ... and was horrified to find that a woman from South America was due to be sentenced .... a woman who had greatly helped my anti-drug campaign ... but I had not prepared a support letter for her - because she hadn't told me her court date. So I stayed up late and prepared a letter ... which I took to the High Court yesterday morning (...after phoning a prison to cancel a scheduled visit...) and a very kind judge gave the woman 3 months discount. Thank you Jesus!

Isaiah 31-32: How foolish are people who trust in armaments but never bother to consult the Lord. Help and salvation come from the Lord who says: "Once more I will send the good rain. Then shall the wilderness be fertile land and fertile land will become a forest. In the wilderness justice will come to live and integrity in the fertile land. Integrity will bring peace, and justice will bring security. My people will live in a peaceful home, in safe houses, in quiet dwellings."

1 Corinthians 11.20-26: Concerning the Lord's Supper, this is what I received from the Lord and then taught you: On the night he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took some bread, broke it and said "This is my body which will be broken for you". After supper he took a cup and said "This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Each time you drink this cup, drink it in memory of me". Until the Lord comes, therefore, each time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you re-enact the death of the Lord
Jesus, help me understand how bread and wine become your body and blood when Christians celebrate the Eucharist

John 13-14: At the meal, Peter said to Jesus "I will lay down my life for you". Jesus replied "Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times. To all of you I say, there are many rooms in my Father's house. I am going now to prepare a place for you. I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through me"
Jesus, you are the Way, the Truth and the Life. Please help more and more people follow you to find truth and life

When kind judge at High Court case yesterday read my letter and realised it was a last minute job, she asked me publicly in court would I like her to adjourn the case to give me time to do more research for my letter. Wow! What a kind lady! I thanked her and said "no need for adjournment". I may not get a chance in this life to offer her a cup of tea, but tea with her is on my Heavenly Bucket List!

Gay marriage: an elephant in the room (by John W)

Frightening YouTube reports: LGBT radical impact on educational institutions (No. 5); LGBT infiltrating churches (No. 6); US corporations massively supporting LGBT agenda (No. 7). What has happened in the US is now starting to happen in other places. Some day our children will ask "why didn't you do more to stop this evil?"
