Several times in the past few days I have heard people say "I can't watch the news about the violent protests any more .... it's too upsetting". I had the same feeling yesterday when I saw MTR stations being vandalised. It's like watching a video of your house burning.  And the video of people desecrating the flag of China was particularly offensive and disturbing. This will cause an enormous reaction in China, not least in the Beijing leadership. The protesters' aims are supported by many if not most HK people, but the violence used by radical protesters is causing great distress to many ordinary HK people.

My article in today's Ming Pao newspaper has the topic: 1967 riots & 2019 protests. It's on Ming Pao website - click "Australian in HK". Text without recording

Isaiah 54-55: Though the mountains may fall and the hills turn to dust, the love of the Lord will never cease. O come to the water, all you are thirsty, though you have no money, come. Why spend your money on what is useless, your wages on what fails to satisfy? Seek the Lord while he is to be found. Call to him while he is near.
Lord,  please help us give more time to things that are important .... and less time to things that are not so important.

My recording of this reading

Psalm 124: "If the Lord had not been on our side", this is Israel's song. If the Lord had not been on our side when people rose against us, then would they have swallowed us alive when they were angry with us. Blessed be the Lord who did not let us become a prey for their teeth. Our life, like a bird, has escaped from the snare of the hunter. Indeed the snare has been broken
and we have escaped. Our help is in the name of the Lord who made heaven and earth

Thank you, Lord, for all the times you have rescued me from trouble

Listen

1 Corinthians 16.5-24: I hope to visit you after I have been to Macedonia. I will stay at Ephesus until Pentecost, because an important door has opened for my work, despite opposition. Be brave and strong. Let everything be done in love. The grace of the Lord Jesus be with you
Jesus, help me be brave and strong, like Paul

Listen

John 18.1-11: After their Last Supper, Jesus and his disciples went to a garden near the Kedron valley. Judas knew they would be there, since they had often gathered there. Judas led the police and soldiers there to arrest Jesus. Jesus said to Judas' group "Who are you looking for?" They replied "Jesus the Nazarene".  Jesus said "I am the one you are looking for. Let these other men go free". The group then arrested Jesus and bound him. They took him to the religious leaders
Jesus, please bless everyone who is arrested today, in every country

Listen

Reflection on the above readings: It's not a very pleasant thing to be arrested and lose your freedom. The reception section of any prison with recently-arrested people is a place where people are in shock/sadness at being a criminal. Yet he who is the C.E.O. of the Universe subjected himself to this humiliation ... for our sake.

Mon Sep 23

Last night I was very unhappy .... when I saw video reports of radical protesters vandalising MTR stations .... and desecrating the flag of China. It's almost as if they are trying to destroy HK and brazenly daring Beijing to take over Hong Kong ... assisted by a HK govt which is unable/unwilling to engage in meaningful dialogue with the protest movement and whose inaction is radicalising protesters. Lord, have mercy on HK!

During lunchtime yesterday I watched 13 Hours That Saved Britain - how greatly outnumbered British pilots, by skill and courage, stopped the German air force in the Battle of Britain. After watching the video, the thought struck me: what is happening now is The Battle of Hong Kong. May HK gain wisdom and courage from the video in responding peacefully to Beijing bullying.

Peaceful explorer? Who was Zheng He, China's Muslim symbol of diplomacy?

Pope's letter to young people:
130. In these three truths - God loves you; Christ is your Saviour; he is alive - we see God the Father and Jesus. Wherever the Father and the Son are, there too is the Holy Spirit.  He is the one who quietly opens hearts to receive that message.  He keeps alive our hope of salvation, and he will help you grow in joy if you are open to his working. The Holy Spirit fills the heart of the risen Christ and then flows over into your lives.  When you receive the Spirit, he draws you ever more deeply into the heart of Christ, so that you can grow in his love, his life and his power.

Isaiah 52-53: See, my servant will prosper, he shall be lifted up and exalted. As the crowds were appalled on seeing him - so disfigured did he look - so will the crowds be astonished at him, for they will see something that has never happened before. Without beauty, without majesty,  we saw him. He was despised and rejected, a man of sorrows and familiar with suffering. He was despised and we took no account of him. And yet ours were the sufferings he bore, ours the sorrows he carried. He was pierced through for our faults, crushed for our sins. On him lies a punishment that brings us peace, and through his wounds we are healed. We had all gone astray like sheep, and the Lord burdened him with our sins. Harshly dealt with, he bore it humbly,
never opening his mouth. He let himself be taken for a sinner, and all the time he was suffering and praying for sinners.

Jesus, these words refer to you. Thank you for all you suffered to redeem the world.

My recording of this reading

Psalm 123: To you have I lifted up my eyes, you who dwell in the heavens. My eyes, like the eyes of slaves on the hand of their lords. Like the eyes of a servant on the hand of her mistress, so our eyes are on the Lord our God till he show us mercy. Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy. We are filled with contempt. Indeed all too full is our soul with the scorn of the rich, with the proud man's disdain.
Lord, please protect poor people from being exploited by rich people

Listen

1 Corinthians 15.54-58: When this mortal nature has put on immortality, then the words of Scripture will come true: "Death has been defeated. Death, where is your victory? Death, where is your sting?" Never give up, dear friends, never admit defeat. Keep on working at the Lord's work always. Know that, in the Lord, no work is in vain
Jesus, please give me more faith  to "keep going"

Listen

John 17.1-21: After saying many things to his disciples at the meal, Jesus looked up to heaven and prayed "Father, my time has come. Give eternal life to everyone you have entrusted to me. Eternal life is this: to know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. I have glorified you on earth, and finished the work you gave me to do. Now, Father, it is time for you to glorify me with the glory I had with you before the world existed. Protect those you have given me. Protect them from Satan. Consecrate them in the truth. As you sent me into the world, so I am sending them into the world. May all my followers be united, so that the world will believe it was you who sent me"
Jesus, please protect our world from lies and deception. Please bless people who witness to the truth in difficult situations

Listen

Reflection on the above readings:
Jesus once said that the greatest love was to die for others.
Maybe this is why Jesus, God the Son, died for us .... to provide the greatest possible expression of God's love for us. Jesus was "crushed with suffering" (Isaiah) so that we could most clearly see how much God loves us.

c.f. readings for Sunday 25

Amos 1-9: It was God who formed the mountains and created the wind. The Lord is his name. He says to the House of Israel: Seek me and you shall live. Do not go to the places of idol worship. Seek good and not evil, so that you may live. Hate evil and love good. Injustice and swindling, exploitation of the poor, this is the reason for earthquakes and disaster.
Lord, please help me to do good and avoid evil

My recording of this reading

Psalm 113: Praise, O friends of the Lord, praise the name of the Lord. May the name of the Lord be blessed both now and for evermore. From the rising of the sun to its setting praised be the name of the Lord. Who is like the Lord our God, above the heavens his glory. From the dust he lifts up the lowly, to put them in the company of royalty. To the childless wife he gives a home and gladdens her heart with children.
May the Lord be praised from sunrise to sunset

Listen

1 Timothy 2.1-8: My advice is that, first of all, there should be prayers offered for everyone - petitions, intercessions and thanksgiving - and especially for kings and others in authority, so that we may be able to live religious and reverent lives in peace and quiet. To do this is right, and will please God our saviour: he wants everyone to be saved and reach full knowledge of the truth. For there is only one God, and there is only one mediator between God and mankind, himself a man, Christ Jesus, who sacrificed himself as a ransom for them all. He is the evidence of this, sent at the appointed time, and I have been named a herald and apostle of it and - I am telling the truth and no lie - a teacher of the faith and the truth to the pagans.

Luke 16:

Jesus said to his disciples:  use money, tainted as it is, to win you friends, and thus make sure that when it fails you, they will welcome you into the tents of eternity. The man who can be trusted in little things can be trusted in great; the man who is dishonest in little things will be dishonest in great. If then you cannot be trusted with money, that tainted thing, who will trust you with genuine riches? And if you cannot be trusted with what is not yours, who will give you what is your very own? No servant can be the slave of two masters: he will either hate the first and love the second, or treat the first with respect and the second with scorn. You cannot be the slave both of God and of money.

c.f. readings for Feast of St Matthew

Isaiah 51-52:
Pay attention to me, you peoples. Listen to me, you nations. The islands put their hope in the Lord. They put their trust in his strength. How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of one who brings good news, who proclaims peace and salvation, and tells Zion "Your God is king!" Break into shouts of joy, you ruins of Jerusalem, for the Lord is redeeming his people. All the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.
Lord, may more and more people in more and more countries know you and love you.

My recording of this reading

Psalm  117:
O Praise the Lord, all you nations. Acclaim him, all you peoples! Strong is his love for us. He is faithful for ever.
May all the nations love and praise you, Lord

Recording

Ephesians 4.1-16: I implore you to lead a life worthy of your vocation. Bear with one another charitably, in complete selflessness, gentleness and patience. If we live by the truth and in love, we shall become more and more like Christ. We are parts of the Body of Christ. Christ is the head. Each part must do its bit to keep the Body healthy and growing in love.
Jesus, help me understand how the Church is your Body

Matthew 9.9-13: One day when Jesus was walking past a customs house he said to a tax collector named Matthew "Follow me". Matthew got up and followed Jesus. Matthew invited Jesus and Jesus' friends to a dinner in his house. Some tax collectors and "bad" people sat at Jesus' table. Religious leaders saw this and complained to Jesus' friends "Why does your master eat with tax collectors and bad people?" Jesus' answer was "It is not the healthy who need the doctor, but the sick. Go and think about the Bible words 'What I want is mercy, not sacrifice'. I have a special concern for rejects and down-and-outs."
Jesus, please help religious leaders in today's world to care more about people who are rejected by society

Reflection on the above Bible readings:

For the Feast of St Matthew who was a tax collector:
A man was driving along the road when all of a sudden he has to swerve to avoid a box falling off the lorry in front. Seconds later a policeman pulled him over for reckless driving. As the policeman starting writing the ticket he noticed the box was full of nails and tacks. "I had to swerve or I'd have run over those and blown my tyres!" protested the driver. "Ok", replied the officer, ripping up the ticket, "but I'm still bringing you in." "What for?!" retorted the man. "Tacks evasion", answered the policeman.

Fri Sep 20

On this blog on August 8 I said how I had on August 7 seen protesters blocking traffic at the intersection of Nathan Road and Jordan Road .... and how unhappy I had been that people were going to miss planes because airport buses were being blocked. Yesterday I was surprised to find myself in a FB video about August 7 .... as one of 3 "foreign commanders of the protesters"! Post has had more than 400,000 views and more than 5,000 comments. Lucia (Mercy HK NGO) last night helped me put a reply in English - select "new" for comments at this link. In case you can't find it (it takes a lot of scrolling down), here is my comment: From guy wearing hat - I was not commanding, I was BEGGING! ...asking them not to block the airport buses .... not to damage footpath safety rails ... not to cause suffering to ordinary people

Using a letter received two days ago from a Tanzanian prison in HK ( ... and previous info from a number of sources) yesterday I put this file on my Tz website ... in the hope it will stop Tanzanians from going to prison in HK.  I also put the file on East Africa's biggest blog ... and set up a new FB page: Tanzania Drug Trade (with the file)

Isaiah 50: The Lord has opened my ear to hear his message. The Lord has given me words to proclaim his message. For my part, I made no resistance, neither did I turn away. I offered my back to those who struck me, my cheeks to those who tore at my beard. I did not protect my face from insult and spittle. I set my face like flint. The Lord will help me.
Jesus, please help me understand how these words refer to you

My recording of this reading

Psalm 122: I rejoiced when I heard them say "Let us go to God's house." And now our feet are standing within your gates, O Jerusalem. For the peace of Jerusalem pray "Peace be to your homes." For love of the house of the Lord I will ask for your good.
Lord, may your peace be in our hearts and homes

1 Corinthians 15.20-22: Christ has been raised from the dead, the first to rise of all who have died. Death came through one man, Adam, and rising from the dead has come through one man, Jesus. Just as all people die because of Adam, so all people can live because of Christ.
Jesus, may all people have eternal life

John 16.7-33: Jesus said to his disciples at the meal "I will leave you soon. After I go, I will send the New Friend to you. The New Friend will teach you all about right and wrong. The New Friend will help you know the truth about everything. You are sad now because I am leaving you. But I will see you again, and your hearts will be full of joy. No one will be able to take that joy from you. I have told you all these things so that you may find peace in me. In the world you will have trouble, but be brave: I have conquered the world
Jesus, thank you for your peace, your joy, and your Holy Spirit

Reflection on the above Bible readings: People say we now live in the "post-truth era" where truth so often is replaced by lies, fake news, half-truths etc. More than ever we need to pray each day: "Spirit of Truth, fall afresh on us!"

Just as I arrived at a local canteen for last night's weekly meal with about 30 homeless people, a "street lady" who works nearby came walking past in the opposite direction, overloaded with luggage. .... going back to the Mainland for a long weekend. She recognized me (some years ago I had a weekly breakfast with her group) and asked me to help her carry one large item - a load of laundry - to a laundry shop two blocks away. After the laundry shop I went back to explain things to the smiling homeless guests who were sitting at the footpath tables outside the canteen.

Pope's letter to young people:
124. There is a third truth, inseparable from the second: Christ is alive! We need to keep reminding ourselves of this, because we can risk seeing Jesus Christ simply as a fine model from the distant past, as a memory, as someone who saved us two thousand years ago. But that would be of no use to us: it would leave us unchanged, it would not set us free. The one who fills us with his grace, the one who liberates us, transforms us, heals and consoles us is someone fully alive

Isaiah 46-49: The Lord called me before I was born. From my mother's womb he knew my name. While I was thinking that I had toiled in vain, all the while my cause was with the Lord. The Lord who formed me in the womb and assigned me to rescue his people, that same Lord  said to me: 'I will make you the light of the nations, so that my salvation will reach to the ends of the earth'. The Lord also says to his people: "Does a woman forget her baby, or a mother the child within her womb? Yet even if these forget, I will never forget you".

Psalms 120-121: I call to the Lord in the hour of my distress: "Lord save me from people who speak with lying lips". Long enough have I been dwelling with those who hate peace. I am for peace, but they are for fighting. I lift up my eyes to the mountains. From where shall come my help? My help shall come from the Lord who made heaven and earth. 1 Corinthians 15.9-11: I am the least of the apostles. In fact, since I persecuted the Church of God, I hardly deserve the name apostle. But by God's grace I am what I am, and the grace that he gave me has not been fruitless. On the contrary, I, or rather the grace of God in my heart, have worked harder than any of the others, preaching the same message that they preach
Jesus, may your grace in me be more fruitful

As the Scripture says 'They hated me for no reason'. I am telling you these things now, so that when they happen, your faith will not be shaken.
Jesus, if people are unfriendly because I am a Christian, please give me strength and courage

I was at the High Court building yesterday morning in support of a woman from Venezuela in her case at the Court of Appeal. Then back home to Jordan for lunch and rest and some office work. Pope's letter to young people:
120. We are saved by Jesus because he loves us and cannot go against his nature.  We can do any number of things against him, yet he loves us and he saves us.  For only what is loved can be saved.  Only what is embraced can be transformed.  The Lord's love is greater than all our problems, frailties and flaws. Yet it is precisely through our problems, frailties and flaws that he wants to write this love story.  He embraced the prodigal son, he embraced Peter after his denials, and he always, always, always embraces us after every fall, helping us to rise and get back on our feet.  Because the worst fall, and pay attention to this, the worst fall, the one that can ruin our lives, is when we stay down and do not allow ourselves to be helped up

Isaiah 43-45: The Lord says: Do not be afraid, for I have redeemed you. I have called you by your name, you are mine. If you travel over the seas, I will be with you. If you travel on great rivers, I will protect you. For I am the Lord, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your savior. They are ignorant, those who carry around an idol made of wood, those who pray to a lump of wood that cannot hear. Turn to me and be saved all peoples of the world.
Lord, please help me be more aware of your protection each day and night

My recording of this reading

Psalm 119: They are happy who follow God's word, those who seek God with all their hearts. How can young people avoid evil? By seeking you and obeying you, Lord. Open my eyes, Lord,  that I may understand the beauty of your word. Lord, when I'm worried or in trouble, your word revives me and gives me strength. Lord, keep my eyes from what is false. Bend my heart to your word and not to love of gain. The word from your mouth means more to me than silver and gold. The unfolding of your word gives light and teaches simple people.
Lord, thank you for your word which gives peace to our hearts

1 Corinthians 15.1-8: Let me remind you of the basic facts of the Good News: Christ died for our sins. He was buried. He was raised to life on the third day. He appeared to Peter, then to the other apostles, then to more than 500 of the believers - most of whom are still alive. Then he appeared to James and the other disciples. Last of all he appeared to me. I was like an unexpected child
Jesus, I have not yet seen you, but I believe in you and I love you

John 15.9-13: At the meal, Jesus said to his disciples "As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you. Remain in my love by keeping my commandments, especially this commandment: love one another, as I have loved you. A man can have no greater love than to lay down his life for his friends"
Jesus, thank you for loving us. Help us to love one another as you have loved us

Oh.... so this is what my ears are for!! - 2nd "top comment" on Beethoven's 9th - here - after beautiful 1st top comment from Xiaohan Yu: I was writing Beethoven's essay when I listen to this piece, when it comes to 2nd movement I literally burst into tears, this piece is his late period work, he was fully deaf, totally isolated, and extremely moody and suspicious, he faced financial problem, health problem, family problem, but his music is always full of hope, I am just speechless, he is a great man, I admire him with all my heart

Gay marriage: an elephant in the room (by John W)

Video: What "gay marriage" did to Massachusetts
同志婚姻自2004年立法後,美國麻省的改變 ( 廣東話附字幕版)

Frightening YouTube reports: LGBT radical impact on educational institutions (No. 5); LGBT infiltrating churches (No. 6); US corporations massively supporting LGBT agenda (No. 7). What has happened in the US is now starting to happen in other places. Some day our children will ask "why didn't you do more to stop this evil?"
