The collapse of HK is continuing at exponential speed: Vandals bring HK to standstill. Yesterday before midday as I crossed the intersection of Nathan Road and Jordan Road to join two very special friends for a Yum Cha, I noticed the traffic and pedestrian lights were not working ... with pedestrians running the gauntlet between buses, trucks and cars to cross the road .... and vehicles blasting horns trying to force their way through the intersection .... with not a few near-misses. I actually made a video of a police car going through the intersection, but not stopping to help the situation.

More than an hour later when I returned to the same place, after the Yum Cha, the situation was just as chaotic. So, I went home, got my trusty bush hat, and went back to the intersection as a volunteer traffic guide .... for which, as the afternoon went on, many dozens of bus drivers and other drivers waved a thank you sign to me as they went past. Many pedestrians gave me bottles of water ... from a few of which I took a few mouthfuls before putting the bottles at an crossing island.

After about 30 minutes a police car stopped and several policeman told me to stop. I said I'd be happy to stop if they would do the job. They asked me to get in their car. I declined and walked to a footpath. Then I went home for a drink and toilet break. Then went back. Police still not helping. So I went back to work. Having a bus licence (in Australia and formerly in HK) I understand traffic and felt in no danger. Just got tired after another 90 minute stint. With a cramp in my left foot. So I went again to the footpath. Providential timing. Within a minute another police car came and two polite officers and I had the same conversation as above. They told me to go. I said I would go if they would do their job. My left foot and tiredness decided on a trip home, where I had a shower (very hot weather) and rest.

About 6.30pm I went back to the intersection ....as part of a prayer walk ...and was pleased to see 4 (!) traffic policeman on the job. But when I returned around 7pm they were just leaving ....walking away from a dangerous situation. So I ask myself, as on last night's menu: why are police not on the job? Why are they letting vandals have hours of freedom to wreck MTR stations and smash shops? Some people say the authorities want to see HK in chaos so that the PLA can come in and restore order and rule will be from Beijing. To this end, some people even say that some of the destruction is being done by undercover policemen .... maybe from the Mainland since some don't speak HK Cantonese.

Some people say that while the vast majority of protesters are peaceful, there's a small minority of radical vandals whose aim is anarchy. No mainstream media will talk much about this, but in private many people feel that former legislator "Long Hair" Leung Kwok Hung is one of the masterminds of the destruction that "spontaneously" breaks out at the same time at so many locations. Wikipedia's main article (with it's many links) shows he was/is a Trotskyist, anarchist and revolutionary Marxist.

So, the vandalising is maybe coming from more than one source, but it is turning one of the safest and most beautiful cities in the world into a place of destruction and despondency. I felt absolutely gutted last night as I walked down Nathan Road from Jordan Road to Waterloo Road, seeing the trail of destruction ...especially my beloved Kowloon Central Post Office whose doors and windows have been smashed and the front of the building covered in "campaign signs". And I noticed many groups of mainly young people in black carrying umbrellas (on a fine night) heading towards Mong Kok ....trouble brewing there.

Violence just makes things worse. And this is a lesson that the HK government is just not getting. It caused the original peaceful protests (by its crazy extradition amendment) and then by ignoring the peaceful protesters, the govt bred violence, bred radical vandals ..some of whom didn't need much breeding .... they were waiting for a chance to destroy HK. The govt has handed HK to them on a petrol bomb.

Is this all a bad dream? If only. But today is another day .... and how will people get to work and school with the MTR badly damaged and under threat after four nights of destruction (Frid, Sat, Sun, public holiday yesterday for Chung Yeung Festival)? God, please help HK get out of this mess! Please thwart the plans of the wicked!

Jeremiah 7: At the gate of the Temple in Jerusalem, Jeremiah proclaimed the word of the Lord: "You people of Judah who come here to worship, amend your behavior and actions, and then I, the Lord,  will meet you here in this Temple. Do not exploit the stranger, the orphan and the widow. Do not follow alien gods, do not break the Commandments. If you don't care about bad behavior and yet keep on coming to my Temple for worship, your worship is useless and you are turning this Temple into a robbers' den. This nation refuses to listen to the Lord. Sincerity has vanished since worship and behavior are not related."
Lord, please help me "practise what I preach"

My recording of this reading

Psalm 137: By the rivers of Babylon we sat and cried, remembering Zion. On the poplars that grew there we hung up our harps. For it was there that they asked us, our captors, for songs. "Sing to us", they said, "one of Zion's songs". O how could we sing the song of the Lord on alien soil? If I forget you, Jerusalem, let my right hand wither. O let my tongue cleave to my mouth
if I remember you not, Jerusalem, above all my joys
.

Lord, please help  people who have been exiled from their homeland

Galatians 1.11-24: The Good News I preach is not a human message. It is something I received from Jesus Christ. I used to persecute the church, but then God called me to follow Jesus. I am a one-time persecutor who is now preaching the faith I had previously tried to destroy. When I visited Jerusalem three years after my conversion, the believers gave glory to God for what he had done for me
Jesus, please turn more persecutors into preachers!

John 20.1-10: Before dawn the next morning, Sunday, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb.  She saw the stone had been moved from the tomb's entrance. She ran to Peter and John and said "Someone has taken the Lord out of the tomb". They ran back to the tomb. Peter went in first. He saw that the linen cloths were on the ground. But the cloth that had been around Jesus' head was not on the ground. It was neatly folded and in a place by itself. Then John went into the tomb. He saw, and he believed
Jesus, I believe you rose from the dead. Please increase my faith

c.f. readings for Feast of the Rosary

Genesis 3: A creature hostile to God took the form of a snake and tempted the first man and first woman. The snake tempted them to disobey God. When God asked them why they disobeyed him, the man blamed the woman, and the woman blamed the snake. God said to the snake: "You are the enemy of the human race. Someday a member of the human race will defeat you."
God said to the man and woman: "From dust you came, and to dust you will return." The first man's name was
Adam (meaning "man"). The first woman's name was Eve (meaning "life").
Dear God, please help me understand how evil in the world started when Adam and Eve disobeyed you
My recording of this reading

Luke 1.46: My soul glorifies the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God, my Saviour.  He looks on his servant in her lowliness; henceforth all ages will call me blessed. The Almighty works marvels for me. Holy his name! His mercy is from age to age, on those who fear him. He puts forth his arm in strength and scatters the proud-hearted. He casts the mighty from their thrones and raises the lowly. He fills the starving with good things, sends the rich away empty. He protects Israel, his servant, remembering his mercy, the mercy promised to our fathers, to Abraham and his sons for ever.

Acts 1.12: After Jesus went up to heaven from the Mount of Olives, the apostles went back down to Jerusalem, a walk of about half a kilometer. They gathered in an upstairs room which they used as a meeting place. The 11 apostles were Peter, John, James, Andrew, Philip, Thomas, Bartholomew, Matthew, James son of Alphaeus, Simon and Jude. They spent a long time praying. With them were several women, including Mary the mother of Jesus, and also Jesus' brothers.

Luke 1.26: In the sixth month of Elizabeth's pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to the town of Nazareth in Galilee, to a virgin named Mary who was betrothed to a man named Joseph. The angel said to her "Mary, Rejoice! You have been greatly blessed by God. You are to conceive and have a son whom you must name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of God". Mary said to the angel, "How can this happen since I am a virgin?" The angel replied "The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will specially bless you. Know this too: your cousin Elizabeth has, in her old age, conceived a son, and is now in her sixth  month". "I am the handmaid of the Lord", said Mary, "let what you have said, be done for me".  And the angel left her

Reflection on the above readings:

Many religions use beads to help pray. Beads help us to remember what we're doing. Beads help us to focus on praying ... even as we ride a bus or walk along the street. My own custom is to pray an Our Father and a Hail Mary at the start of each decade of the Rosary, and then for the 9 other beads to use words from the Bible readings of the day. So for today, the first decade might use a bead or two for each of these words: "the snake tempted them", "they disobeyed God", "Someday a member of the human race will defeat you", "from dust you came, to dust you will return", the first people were named "man" and "woman". Then the Glory be to the Father, then the "O my Jesus" prayer. Then to the next decade

HK paralysis continues with no trains, banks shut *** This report has these extraordinary words: For three hours, not one police officer was visible in the district. c.f. readings for Sunday 27

Minor prophets: Pride of heart leads us astray. See how they are listless, those whose souls are not at peace. Lord, I have heard of all your wonderful deeds in the past. Do them again in our day, Lord! Even when everything seems hopeless, I trust in you Lord, I praise you Lord. Seek the Lord, all you humble people. Seek integrity, seek humility. In the days to come, people will say
"We want to go with you, since we have learnt that God is with you". Rejoice heart and soul, people of Jerusalem. See, your king comes to you. He is humble and riding on a donkey.

Dear God, thank you for all the beautiful teachings and stories in  "The Old Testament", ("The First Testament"). I now look forward to your message in "The New Testament" ("The Second Testament")

My recording of this reading

Psalm 95: Come ring out our joy to the Lord. Hail the rock who saves us. Let us come before him giving thanks. With songs let us praise the Lord. A mighty God is the Lord, a great king above all gods. In his hand are the depths of the earth. The heights of the mountains are his. To him belongs the sea, for he made it, and the dry land shaped by his hands. Come in, let us bow and bend low. Let us kneel before the God who made us. For he is our God and we are the people who belong to his pasture.
Lord, you are our Creator. Our life comes from you. We praise and love you, Lord

Listen

2 Timothy 1.6-8: I remind you to fan into a flame the gift that God gave you when I prayed over you with the laying on of hands. God's gift was not a spirit of timidity, but the Spirit of power, and love and self-control. Never be ashamed of witnessing to the Lord. Like me and with me, put up with hardships for the sake of the Good News
Jesus, help me put up with hardships for the sake of the Good News

Listen

Luke 17.5-10: The apostles said to the Lord, "Increase our faith." The Lord replied, "Were your faith the size of a mustard seed you could say to this mulberry tree, "Be uprooted and planted in the sea," and it would obey you. Which of you, with a servant ploughing or minding sheep, would say to him when he returned from the fields, "Come and have your meal immediately"? Would he not be more likely to say, "Get my supper laid; make yourself tidy and wait on me while I eat and drink. You can eat and drink yourself afterwards"? Must he be grateful to the servant for doing what he was told? So with you: when you have done all you have been told to do, say, "We are merely servants: we have done no more than our duty."

Reflection on the above readings: With the apostles let us often pray "Jesus, please increase my faith"!

Sat Oct 5

This is good news, and how HK needs it in the midst of so much bad news: Feeding HK - an organisation linking food companies to charities for the redistribution of surplus food  it is plentiful, to where there is a need.

This is terrible news: HK enacts emergency laws to ban masks at protests as NGOs criticise "draconian" measure. This will make things worse. It will lead to underground/clandestine attacks/bombings etc. Doesn't the HK govt have even one rocket scientist? Many "D" words can describe this law:  desperate, dangerous, dumb, disastrous. Missing is the one word that is absolutely necessary to end this crisis: dialogue. *** Schools get notice to warn pupils over face masks (notice the students' reactions ...this new law will be totally counter-productive). Last night I was due to attend a diocesan function for organisations which serve the poor. Function was cancelled because of risk that public transport might be attacked. (A wise decision: MTR closes line after line as vandals hit stations). Hope weekend Masses are not affected. God, please stop the protesters from using violence, and please make the govt to agree to dialogue. Govt's refusal to listen to the voices of millions of peaceful protesters has bred violent vandals *** Mask ban sparks protests in business district as malls close early

Jeremiah 3-6: The country has no rain because its people have forgotten the Lord. The people refuse to repent and so the land has many sorrows. Stop and think about the past: which was the good way to live? Follow that way now and you will find peace for yourselves and the land.

Psalm 136: O give thanks to the Lord for he is good, for his great love is without end. It was his wisdom which made the skies,

It was he who rescued and protected his people Israel, for his great love is without end. He gives food to all living things, for his great love is without end. c.f. Feast of St Francis of Assisi

Galatians 6: The only thing I can boast about is the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom the world is crucified to me, and I to the world. It does not matter if a person is circumcised or not; what matters is for each person to become an altogether new creature. Peace and mercy to all who follow this rule, who form the Israel of God. I want no more trouble from anybody after this; the marks on my body are those of Jesus. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you

O Divine Master, Grant that I may not so much seek To be consoled as to console; To be understood as to understand; To be loved as to love. Happy 150th Birthday Mahatma Gandhi! Your example of NON-VIOLENCE is urgently needed in HK!

Late yesterday afternoon when I left home in Jordan to get a bus to Kowloon Hospital to visit a prisoner I found Nathan Road occupied by protesters and police instead of buses. Hundreds of riot police hurried by me, in pursuit of radical protesters who had just left a trail of vandalism in Jordan, including my beloved Jordan MTR station. I eventually walked to and from the hospital, walking along Nathan Road for the final part of the return trip. An eerie experience. Usually busy shops closed, almost no traffic ... just a trail of destruction. And I wondered what the Chinese soldiers were thinking in the base only a few minute walk from Jordan MTR station. If the HK police are unable/unwilling to protect the MTR, I for one would welcome the Chinese soldiers doing the job. Enough is enough!

Pope's letter to young people:
138.  The love of God and our relationship with the living Christ do not hold us back from dreaming; they do not require us to narrow our horizons. On the contrary, that love elevates us, encourages us and inspires us to a better and more beautiful life.

Readings are from Simple Bible

c.f. Feast of the Guardian Angels

Exodus 23: The Lord says this: "I myself will send an angel before you to guard you as you go and to bring you to the place that I have prepared. Give him reverence and listen to all that he says. Offer him no defiance; he would not pardon such a fault, for my name is in him. If you listen carefully to his voice and do all that I say, I shall be enemy to your enemies, foe to your foes. My angel will go before you."

Psalm 91: He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High says to the Lord "you are my refuge in whom I trust". The Lord will hide you and protect you. Under his wings you will find refuge. You will not fear any night time terror, nor any attack during the day. Upon you no evil shall fall, no plague approach where you dwell. For you has he commanded his angels to keep you safe in all your ways.

Acts 12: When Peter was rescued from prison, he went to the house of Mary the mother of John Mark where people were praying for him, thinking he was still in prison. A servant girl opened the door when Peter knocked. She ran inside to tell the group that Peter was at the door. The group did not believe Peter was there. One of them said  "it must be his angel". Eventually they opened the door and Peter described how an angel had rescued him from prison.

Matthew 18.1: The disciples came to Jesus and said, "Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?" So he called a little child to him and set the child in front of them. Then he said, "I tell you solemnly, unless you change and become like little children you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. And so, the one who makes himself as little as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Anyone who welcomes a little child like this in my name welcomes me. See that you never despise any of these little ones, for I tell you that their angels in heaven are continually in the presence of my Father in heaven."

Reflection on the above readings:

I recommend this little prayer which I've said each morning and night for 60 years:
Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God's love commits me here. Ever this day (night) be at my side to light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen

Today is also the feast day of the inspiring African saint St Josephina Bakhita

Frightening YouTube reports: LGBT radical impact on educational institutions (No. 5); LGBT infiltrating churches (No. 6); US corporations massively supporting LGBT agenda (No. 7). What has happened in the US is now starting to happen in other places. Some day our children will ask "why didn't you do more to stop this evil?"
