Ezekiel 12-18: Ezekiel spoke God's message for the false prophets: "You have misled my people.
You have not bothered to protect my people".
Ezekiel also called on the people to stop their idolatry. He reminded them how to follow the Lord:
a good person is law-abiding and honest; a good person oppresses no one, never steals; a good person gives food and clothing to the poor. "God takes no delight in the death of a sinner. God hopes the sinner will renounce wickedness and live."
Lord, please help me to avoid evil ..... and do more good

My recording of this reading

Psalm 8: How great is your name, O Lord our God, through all the earth. When I see the heavens, the work of your hands, the moon and stars which you have arranged, then I stop and think: what are we insignificant humans that you should care about us? Yet you have put us in charge of the world. Everything is subject to our control.
How great is your name, O Lord our God, through all the earth

Listen

Ephesians 2.19-21: In God's Church you are not foreigners. You are citizens. You are part of a building that has the apostles and prophets for its base. Christ Jesus himself is the foundation stone. You are being built into a house where God lives.
Jesus, be the foundation stone of my life

Listen

Matthew 6.25-34: Jesus said to the crowds that life is about more than food and clothing. Pointing to some birds flying around, Jesus said: Look at the birds. They don't sow or reap, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. And you are more precious than the birds. Pointing to flowers in the field Jesus said: How beautiful are the flowers. They are more beautiful than King Solomon's clothing. If God cares so much about the life of flowers won't he care even more about human life? So, don't spend your day worrying about what you are going to eat and drink and wear. Put God first in your life, God and a right way of life, then  God will look after your physical needs. Don't waste your energy worrying about tomorrow. Live life one day at a time.
Heavenly Father, thank you for caring for the birds and flowers....and me!

Reflection on the above readings: If he was speaking in 2019 with the assistance of modern technology, Jesus could say "Notice how the Creator has marvellously programmed the world so that no two people have the same finger prints, no two zebras have the same stripes, no two snowflakes are the same"

All snowflakes are six-sided .... and all different!  (how do you spell "Creator"?)

Ezekiel 4-11: Ezekiel used many images to describe the fall of Jerusalem. But the people and their leaders would not believe him. God used Ezekiel to say to the exiles: "I will bring you back to your homeland of Israel. I will give you a new heart and a new spirit. Then you will keep my commandments. Then you will know that I am the Lord."
Grant to us, O Lord, a heart renewed

My recording of this reading

Psalm 7: Lord God, I take refuge in you. Please rescue me from people who are trying to hurt me. Lord, please stop bad people from doing bad things. Please help good people to keep on doing good things. Lord, I will sing to you and thank you for your goodness to me.

Ephesians 2.11-14: You non-Jews  were once without hope and without God. But now by the blood of Christ, you who had nothing in common with us Jews, have been united with us into one family. Christ is the peace between us. He has broken down the barrier which used to keep us apart

John 14.22-24 (for Feast of Saints Simon and Jude): Judas - this was not Judas Iscariot - said to Jesus: "Lord, what is all this about? Do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?" Sun Oct 27

Hello from HK where I arrived back last night on a flight from Kuala Lumpur that was rescheduled four hours later than its original departure time. Which turned out to be a blessing for me because it gave me time to have a most important meeting at KLIA airport. Trip included meetings with families of 9 prisoners in HK, two media conferences, meetings with authorities, a meeting at Nigerian High Commission, and two separate meetings with two Drug Lords responsible for sending drug mules to HK (...I kid thee not ...).  Thank you Jesus for a safe trip - please bless everyone I met on the trip ... and those who made the trip possible

For my two Masses this morning I had been thinking about a sermon based on the Gospel (the Pharisee and the outcast). But last night on the plane I watched a 2019 movie that had me in tears from about the 25%. mark - based on a true story from Canada .... about a teenage boy dead for nearly an hour after a drowning accident .... but who, to the astonishment of the doctors but the joy of so many praying for him ...CAME BACK TO LIFE ....and to their further astonishment and joy ....SUFFERED NO BRAIN OR OTHER ORGAN DAMAGE .... and was back at school a few weeks later, playing his beloved basketball. With all sorts of sub-stories about growth in self-awareness, growth in relationships, grow in faith. Name of movie so perfect for many reasons: BREAKTHROUGH! So, my sermon will be about the line in the first reading "The humble person's prayer pierces the clouds" because it was his mother's prayers, his adopted mother's prayers, through which the miracle happened. As the doctor said in his case summary "Patient died; mother prayed; patient came back to life". Praise God!

Protests might cause 1,000 restaurants to close? Causing suffering to innocent people is an irresponsible way to protest. Gandhi did not cause suffering to ordinary people. HK protesters need to imitate Gandhi, not imitate the Red Guards.

c.f. readings for Sunday 30

Sirach 35-37: Be generous as the Lord has been generous to you. Be cheerful when you make a gift to the Lord. The humble person's prayer pierces the clouds, so love the Lord with a humble heart. If a property has no fence, it will be plundered. If a man has no wife, he is like a boat without an anchor. Be careful when you consult other people. After all consultation, follow the advice of your own heart.
Lord, please give me a cheerful and humble heart

My recording of this reading

Psalm 34: I will bless the Lord at all times, his praise always on my lips. In the Lord my soul shall make its boast, the humble shall hear and be glad. Glorify the Lord with me, together let us praise his name. I sought the Lord and he answered me. From all my terrors he set me free. The angel of the Lord is encamped around those who revere the Lord, to rescue them. Taste and see that the Lord is good. They are happy who seek refuge in him. The Lord is close to the broken-hearted.
Those whose spirits are crushed he will save.

Lord, by our Bible reading and prayer, may we taste and see your goodness each day

Listen

2 Timothy 4.6-8: As for me, my life of service to the Lord is nearly over. I have fought the good fight to the end. I have run the race to the finish. I have kept the faith. The Lord will soon give me the best of all prizes: eternal life in heaven. He will give it not only to me, but to everyone who has loved him sincerely in this life
Jesus, help me keep running to the finish line

Listen

Luke 18.9-14: Some people prided themselves on being virtuous, and despised others. Jesus told them this story: Two men went to the Temple to pray, one a religious leader, the other a social outcast. The leader stood there and said "I thank you, God, that I am not greedy, unjust and adulterous like other people such as this outcast here". The outcast did not even raise his eyes, but beat his breast and said "God, be merciful to me, a sinner". The outcast, I tell you, went home a friend of God. The leader did not. People who exalt themselves will be humbled. People who humble themselves will be exalted
Jesus, be merciful to me, a sinner

Ezekiel 1-3: About 5 years after the first group of Jews were exiled to Babylon, Ezekiel received a vision while he was with the exiles in Babylon. Ezekiel saw the glory of the Lord and he heard a voice saying: "I am choosing you to speak my message to the people. Whether the people listen to you or not, you must keep on proclaiming my message. You are to be a sentry to the House of Israel, a lookout who warns them of danger coming." Matthew 6.16-24: Jesus said to the crowds: When you do a bit of fasting, don't run round telling the world what you are doing. Secret fasting is spiritually powerful. Jeremiah 46-52: Jeremiah predicted that the powerful nations involved in Israel's capture would all fall: the Egyptians, the Philistines, the Moabites, the Ammonites, the Babylonians and others. Jeremiah also reminded Israel to rely on the help of the Lord more than the help of other nations: "Our redeemer is strong. The Lord is his name. He will bring peace to the world".
Lord, help us to rely on you more than on human help

My recording of this reading

Psalm 5: At the start of this day I pray to you, O Lord, my King and my God. I offer you my prayer and ask for your help. Through the greatness of your love, I have access to your friendship.  I bow down in reverence and worship. Lead me, Lord, in the way you want me to go. It is you, Lord, who bless good people. You surround them with favors, as with a shield.
Lord, I adore you as my Creator

Ephesians 1.19-23: God the Father raised Christ from death, and put him on the divine throne. Christ is the C.E.O. of  the universe, in charge of everything, from galaxies to governments. No one and nothing is exempt from his rule. At the center of everything is the church. It is Christ's body, in which he speaks and acts.
Jesus, help me understand how the church is the heart of the world, pumping your life and love to all parts of the world

Listen

Matthew 6.1-15: Jesus said to the crowds: When you do a good deed, do it for its own sake, not just to get people to praise you. When you pray, love to pray in private in your heart. Don't be looking for people to notice and praise you. When you pray, there's no need to rave on and on. God is not deaf. Prayer is not a lawyer arguing a case. Prayer is a child speaking with simple trust like this: Our Father in heaven, may every one love and honor you. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as in heaven. Thank you for enough food for today. Forgive us as we forgive others. Save us in time of trial. Protect us from evil.
Jesus, help me remember that each time I pray "The Our Father", you are praying with me. "Your Father = my Father = our Father"

Thu Oct 24

Hello again from Kuala Lumpur. Yesterday morning I was up at 5.15 for Mass and breakfast before kind friend from Star Media gave me a ride to Star's FM988 for breakfast show which was live on FB and is now here. Was seen/heard by a huge audience and hopefully will help stop young Chinese Malaysians from drug trafficking to HK and other places. Many thanks to Star team for arrangements. And see   below!

From the radio station I went to the High Commission of Nigeria where the staff were super-friendly and super-helpful .... re the cases of a number of prisoners in HK recruited by people who unfortunately give their beloved nation a bad name.

From the Commission I went to a gathering for families of prisoners in HK ... assisted by two media teams who are assisting my anti-drug campaign. Apart from a break from about 5pm to 7.15pm, the gathering went from 1pm to 11pm!

Jeremiah 37-45: Jeremiah was arrested and put into a muddy well to die. But a good official persuaded the king to free Jeremiah. When the Chaldaeans captured Jerusalem, they sent many people to Babylon as exiles. Jeremiah was spared from exile and he kept trying to get the people to accept defeat as God had told them. But most of the people would not listen to Jeremiah, even though all his prophecies about defeat had come true. God protected the good officials who had helped Jeremiah.
Lord, please help government leaders be good, like the good officials who helped Jeremiah.

Psalm 4: At the end of this day I praise you, Lord, for all your love and help. O people of the world, how long will you close your hearts to God? How long you will keep on chasing false goals? Lord, you have put into my heart a joy that cannot be obtained by big meals and plenty of wine. I will lie down in peace and sleep comes at once, for you, Lord, make me dwell in safety and peace
Thank you, Lord, for your love and help right through today

Ephesians 1.16-18: I never fail to remember you in my prayers and to thank God for you. May the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, give you more and more wisdom and knowledge
to see ever more clearly his great love for you. May he enlighten your mind to hope for the glorious life he has prepared for us in heaven

Father, Son and Holy Spirit, may I see you more clearly, love you more dearly, follow you more nearly, day by day

Matthew 5.13-48: Jesus said to the crowds: You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its taste, it's no use for anything. You are the light of the world. Let the world see your light, your good deeds. When people see you doing good deeds, people will praise God. I have not come to abolish the Jewish religion. I have come to raise it to a higher level of goodness. Your goodness must not just be something superficial. Your goodness must be something from the heart. You must avoid anger and insult, just like you avoid murder. If you have offended someone, say "Sorry". You must avoid lustful looks and thoughts. Looking at someone lustfully is immorality of the heart. Love and pray for people who are unkind to you. This is the way to practise the highest level of goodness. Jesus, please help me practise a higher level of goodness

Jeremiah 36:  God told Jeremiah to write down all the messages he had spoken for God. So Jeremiah got Baruch to make a written record of all his messages. Baruch wrote the messages on a scroll. Some good officials took the scroll to the king to read. The officials hoped the king would obey the words of the scroll. The king had the scroll read aloud for him. As each section was read, the king used a knife to cut off the section, and then threw the section into a fire. Eventually the whole scroll was burnt. The king then issued an order for Jeremiah to be arrested. God protected Jeremiah and did not allow him to be arrested for the time being. God also told Jeremiah to have another scroll made.
Lord, please move world leaders' hearts to be open to your message of justice and peace and love

My recording of this reading

Psalm 3: When people make fun of me for believing in you, Lord, I deeply remember how you are my help and my shield. Even when the whole world seems against me, I can go to bed and sleep easy, knowing that you protect me. O Lord, please rescue me from people who plot against me.
Lord our savior, please bless everyone who needs help.

Lord, thank you for your protection and help

Ephesians 1.9-13: God the Father has let us know his sacred plan: the whole show, everything in heaven and everything in earth, is one big orchestra with Christ as the conductor. We Jews are special instruments in the orchestra. We were chosen to put our hope in Christ before he came. And you non-Jews are also on the stage, now that you have believed the truth of the Good News. All of us have been stamped with the Holy Spirit. He's the composer whose music we are playing
Father, Son and Holy Spirit, thank you for the gift of life and the gift of faith. Help me play well!

Matthew 5.1-12: Jesus said to the crowds: Blessed are poor and simple of heart people. They belong to the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are people who are going through great sorrow. Their hearts will be filled with peace. Blessed are people who lead just and honest lives. They will see the victory of goodness. Blessed are people who show mercy to others. God will be merciful to them. Blessed are people who have a clean heart. They will see God. Blessed are people who are peacemakers. They are God's children. Blessed are people who are persecuted for the cause of right. They will receive a great reward in heaven.
Jesus, please help me be merciful and kind and just

Tues Oct 8

The collapse of HK is continuing at exponential speed: Vandals bring HK to standstill. Yesterday before midday as I crossed the intersection of Nathan Road and Jordan Road to join two very special friends for a Yum Cha, I noticed the traffic and pedestrian lights were not working ... with pedestrians running the gauntlet between buses, trucks and cars to cross the road .... and vehicles blasting horns trying to force their way through the intersection .... with not a few near-misses. I actually made a video of a police car going through the intersection, but not stopping to help the situation.

More than an hour later when I returned to the same place, after the Yum Cha, the situation was just as chaotic. So, I went home, got my trusty bush hat, and went back to the intersection as a volunteer traffic guide .... for which, as the afternoon went on, many dozens of bus drivers and other drivers waved a thank you sign to me as they went past. Many pedestrians gave me bottles of water ... from a few of which I took a few mouthfuls before putting the bottles at an crossing island.

After about 30 minutes a police car stopped and several policeman told me to stop. I said I'd be happy to stop if they would do the job. They asked me to get in their car. I declined and walked to a footpath. Then I went home for a drink and toilet break. Then went back. Police still not helping. So I went back to work. Having a bus licence (in Australia and formerly in HK) I understand traffic and felt in no danger. Just got tired after another 90 minute stint. With a cramp in my left foot. So I went again to the footpath. Providential timing. Within a minute another police car came and two polite officers and I had the same conversation as above. They told me to go. I said I would go if they would do their job. My left foot and tiredness decided on a trip home, where I had a shower (very hot weather) and rest.

About 6.30pm I went back to the intersection ....as part of a prayer walk ...and was pleased to see 4 (!) traffic policeman on the job. But when I returned around 7pm they were just leaving ....walking away from a dangerous situation. So I ask myself, as on last night's menu: why are police not on the job? Why are they letting vandals have hours of freedom to wreck MTR stations and smash shops? Some people say the authorities want to see HK in chaos so that the PLA can come in and restore order and rule will be from Beijing. To this end, some people even say that some of the destruction is being done by undercover policemen .... maybe from the Mainland since some don't speak HK Cantonese.

Some people say that while the vast majority of protesters are peaceful, there's a small minority of radical vandals whose aim is anarchy. No mainstream media will talk much about this, but in private many people feel that former legislator "Long Hair" Leung Kwok Hung is one of the masterminds of the destruction that "spontaneously" breaks out at the same time at so many locations. Wikipedia's main article (with it's many links) shows he was/is a Trotskyist, anarchist and revolutionary Marxist.

So, the vandalising is maybe coming from more than one source, but it is turning one of the safest and most beautiful cities in the world into a place of destruction and despondency. I felt absolutely gutted last night as I walked down Nathan Road from Jordan Road to Waterloo Road, seeing the trail of destruction ...especially my beloved Kowloon Central Post Office whose doors and windows have been smashed and the front of the building covered in "campaign signs". And I noticed many groups of mainly young people in black carrying umbrellas (on a fine night) heading towards Mong Kok ....trouble brewing there.

Violence just makes things worse. And this is a lesson that the HK government is just not getting. It caused the original peaceful protests (by its crazy extradition amendment) and then by ignoring the peaceful protesters, the govt bred violence, bred radical vandals ..some of whom didn't need much breeding .... they were waiting for a chance to destroy HK. The govt has handed HK to them on a petrol bomb.

Is this all a bad dream? If only. But today is another day .... and how will people get to work and school with the MTR badly damaged and under threat after four nights of destruction (Frid, Sat, Sun, public holiday yesterday for Chung Yeung Festival)? God, please help HK get out of this mess! Please thwart the plans of the wicked!

The Book Blog:   4 readings + recordings
Comments welcome here
Readings are from Simple Bible

Jeremiah 7: At the gate of the Temple in Jerusalem, Jeremiah proclaimed the word of the Lord: "You people of Judah who come here to worship, amend your behavior and actions, and then I, the Lord,  will meet you here in this Temple. Do not exploit the stranger, the orphan and the widow. Do not follow alien gods, do not break the Commandments. If you don't care about bad behavior and yet keep on coming to my Temple for worship, your worship is useless and you are turning this Temple into a robbers' den. This nation refuses to listen to the Lord. Sincerity has vanished since worship and behavior are not related."
Lord, please help me "practise what I preach"

My recording of this reading

Psalm 137: By the rivers of Babylon we sat and cried, remembering Zion. On the poplars that grew there we hung up our harps. For it was there that they asked us, our captors, for songs. "Sing to us", they said, "one of Zion's songs". O how could we sing the song of the Lord on alien soil? If I forget you, Jerusalem, let my right hand wither. O let my tongue cleave to my mouth
if I remember you not, Jerusalem, above all my joys

Lord, please help  people who have been exiled from their homeland

Galatians 1.11-24: The Good News I preach is not a human message. It is something I received from Jesus Christ. I used to persecute the church, but then God called me to follow Jesus. I am a one-time persecutor who is now preaching the faith I had previously tried to destroy. When I visited Jerusalem three years after my conversion, the believers gave glory to God for what he had done for me
Jesus, please turn more persecutors into preachers!

John 20.1-10: Before dawn the next morning, Sunday, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb.  She saw the stone had been moved from the tomb's entrance. She ran to Peter and John and said "Someone has taken the Lord out of the tomb". They ran back to the tomb. Peter went in first. He saw that the linen cloths were on the ground. But the cloth that had been around Jesus' head was not on the ground. It was neatly folded and in a place by itself. Then John went into the tomb. He saw, and he believed
Jesus, I believe you rose from the dead. Please increase my faith
