Tues Nov 5

Yesterday I was in Tai Lam women's prison from 9am to 6pm .....with the final half hour as usual in the hospital section .... in whose maternity area I spent some time with 7 young mothers and their tiny babies. Wish I could have had my camera. The G7, make that G14, was a beautiful sight!

Only when I was in Malaysia two weeks ago did I learn about this: Am I allowed to touch a dog? (It's one reason why so many drugs pass through Kuala Lumpur Airport - no sniffer dogs!)

Today is Melbourne Cup Day ... but because of the recent revelations about the cruel destruction of race horses (and the deaths of several women jockeys) ... I have no interest in this year's Cup.

Readings are from Simple Bible

Daniel 1: There were many Israelite exiles in Babylon. The king of Babylon wanted some of them to work in his palace. The king told his officials to select 4 young men and train them in local customs and culture. The 4 selected were Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah. God blessed these 4 with great wisdom. God also blessed Daniel with the gift of understanding dreams. When the 4 began work for the king, they were much wiser than all the local officials.
Lord, please give us the gift of wisdom, as you gave it to Daniel and his friends

My recording of this reading

Psalm 17-18:
Lord,  when trouble breaks out on every side, please protect and help me. For you are my strength, my rock, my fortress, my savior. I love you, Lord who save me because you love me. Lord, you are my lamp who lightens my life. I will praise you among the nations.
Lord, you are worthy of all praise

Listen

Ephesians 4.22-32: You must give up your old way of life. You must put aside your old self and its delusions. Your mind must be renewed by a spiritual revolution, so that you can follow a way of life based on goodness and truth. From now on, no more lies. Delete anger from your mind at the end of each day. Anyone who was a thief must stop stealing. Try to find a decent job. Guard against foul talk. Let your conversation encourage people, not drag them down. Avoid grudges. Don't lose your temper.
Don't raise your voice to anyone. Don't call people names. Be friends with one another, and kind, forgiving one another as readily as God forgives us in Christ

Jesus, help me put these words into practice

Listen

Matthew 8.14-17: Jesus went to the home of Peter the "fisher of men". Peter's mother-in-law was sick in bed with a fever.
Jesus touched her hand, and the fever left her. She got up and began to serve her visitor. That evening, many sick people were brought to Peter's home. Jesus healed them all.

Jesus, please heal .....(names)....who are sick

Listen

Reflection on the above readings: Peter's mother-in-law was an immediate missionary for Jesus in her town ... letting others know about her visitor who could cure sick people. She didn't keep the knowledge of her cure to herself .... gratitude in her heart produced the fruit of being eager to help others. Eagerness was a strong trait in Peter's family!

In Kuala Lumpur two weeks ago, at a gathering for the families of prisoners in HK, I took a photo of three men and introduced them to each other. They are the father, husband and brother of three women in Tai Lam prison .... and all 3 women are friends working in the prison laundry. Women were pleased yesterday to know that the 3 men now also are friends.

I spent much time yesterday afternoon preparing a support letter for a Peru man due to be sentenced at the High Court later this month for drug trafficking. Ezekiel 35-38: Through Ezekiel, God kept calling on the people to turn from their sins and remember their Creator. God said he would bring back Israel's exiles to their homeland. He would give them a new start in life, like a skeleton coming back to life. God said the people would re-build the Temple in Jerusalem, and religious practice would once again flourish. The people would once again remember God. The people would once again be blessed by the Lord.
Lord, please help nations which have forgotten you to come back to you

My recording of this reading

Psalm 16: Please protect me, Lord, I take refuge in you. You are the only source of all true happiness. I bless you, Lord, who guide and lead me. Even at night you direct my heart. And so my heart rejoices, my soul is glad. My body shall rest in safety now and always. You will show me the path of life, the fullness of joy in your presence, at your right hand, happiness for ever.
Thank you, Lord, for the little joys you give us each day .... and the big joy you've prepared for us in Heaven

Listen

Ephesians 4.17-19: Do not go back to living the aimless kind of life that many non-believers live. Intellectually they are in the dark, because they have shut the door on God's grace. They have a poor sense of right and wrong, and have abandoned themselves to reckless living
Jesus, help people who are confused about the meaning of life

Listen

Matthew 8.5-13: In the town of Capernaum, a Roman army captain said to Jesus "Sir, my servant is paralyzed and in great pain." Jesus replied "I will go and heal him". But the captain said "Sir, I am not worthy that you should enter my house. Just say the word and my servant will be healed. For I understand orders. I give an order, and people act. I know that you also just need to give an order, and my servant will be healed". Jesus said "This foreigner's faith is greater than that of the local people. And I  tell you that in the future people from all parts of the world will be in the kingdom of heaven". Then Jesus said to the captain "Go home. Your request made in faith is granted". And the servant was healed at that moment.
Jesus, please give more people, from all parts of the world, the faith of the captain

Listen

Reflection on the above readings: How come the Roman captain had such great faith? For a start, he didn't have a mindset which said "I'm a Roman ... I've got nothing to learn from the Jews". And this openness to the truth led on to faith ... in miracles

c.f. readings for Sunday 31

Wisdom 10-19: Wisdom has been present in the world since the beginning of time. Wisdom has always been a close friend of good people. Wise people see God in the beauty of creation. Foolish people are blind to God's presence in creation. Wise people ponder God's goodness and kindness. Wise people  try to be good and kind to other people.
Lord, please help me see and imitate your goodness and kindness

My recording of this reading

Psalm 145: I will give you glory, O God my king. I will bless your name day after day. The Lord is great, worthy of all praise.
His greatness cannot be measured. Age to age shall proclaim your works, shall speak of your splendor and glory. The Lord is kind and full of compassion, slow to anger, abounding in love. How good is the Lord to all, compassionate to all his creatures. All your creatures shall thank you, O Lord, and tell all the world of your love. The Lord is faithful in all his words and loving in all his deeds. The Lord supports all who fall and raises all who are bowed down. The eyes of all creatures look to you and you give them their food each day. The Lord is close to all who call him, who call on him from their hearts. Let the whole world bless the Lord's holy name, for ever, for ages unending.

Thank you, Lord, for your love. Thank you for your love

Listen

2 Thessalonians 2.1-17: Regarding the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, don't be deceived by wild speculation. Stand firm in your faith and avoid speculation. Keep the traditions we taught you, whether by word of mouth or by letter. May God strengthen you in everything good you do or say
Jesus, stop people spreading false information

Listen

Luke 19.1-9: In Jericho there was a wealthy man named Zacchaeus, a senior tax collector. He wanted to see what kind of person Jesus was. But because of his short stature he couldn't see over the crowd. So he climbed a tree. Jesus saw him up the tree and said "Zacchaeus, come down, because I will stay at your house today". Zacchaeus hurried down and welcomed Jesus warmly. People complained "He's gone to stay at the house of an outcast". Zacchaeus replied "Sir, I am going to give half of my property to the poor. And if I have cheated anyone, I'll pay them back fourfold". Jesus said to him "Today salvation has come to this house"
Jesus, please help more people to want to know and love you

Listen

c.f. Readings for All Souls Day

Isaiah 25: On Mount Zion in Jerusalem, the Lord will prepare for all peoples a banquet of rich food, a banquet of fine wines. On this mountain he will delete Death. The Lord will wipe away the tears from every cheek. Lord, you are my God, I extol you, I praise your name. You, Lord, are a refuge for the poor, a refuge for the needy in distress.
Lord, please give hope and courage to people who are sad and troubled in the world today

My recording of this reading

Psalm 27: The Lord is my light and my help, whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life, before whom shall I shrink? Though an army encamp against me, even then would I trust. There is one thing I ask of the Lord, for this I long: to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life. It is your face, O Lord, that I seek. Hide not your face. I am sure I will see your goodness in the land of the living. Hope in the Lord, hold firm and take heart. Hope in the Lord!
Lord, please increase my remembering, my longing and my hope

Recording

Philippians 3.20-41: Our homeland is in heaven. We wait for the Savior from heaven who will transfigure these wretched bodies of ours into copies of his glorious body. He will do this by the same power he has as C.E.O. of the universe. So, do not stop running but remain faithful in the Lord.
Jesus, please increase my longing for heaven

Recording

Mark 16.1-8: Jesus died on Friday afternoon. Early on Sunday morning, Mary of Magdala and two other women went to Jesus' tomb to anoint his body with spices. They had been wondering how they would roll away the large stone, but when they arrived, the stone had already been rolled away. When they went into the tomb, they saw a young man in a white robe and they were full of awe. But he said to them  "Do not be afraid. You are looking for Jesus who was crucified. He is not here. He has risen from the dead. Go and tell his disciples he will see them in Galilee"
Jesus, when life seems hopeless, like a dead body in a tomb, please help us remember how you rose from the dead .... and you can help us "rise" from any "hopeless" situation

Recording

Reflection on the above Bible readings:

One thing that nearly all cultures share: an instinct to remember the dead, to pray for the dead, to honor the dead.

Fri Nov 1 ALL SAINTS DAY

Yesterday morning I was at the High Court building for the cases of an Indonesian woman and a man from Bolivia. Woman's Court of Appeal case was adjourned by a sympathetic bench of 3 judges. Man received 3 months discount for help to my anti-drug campaign. After which I had a lunch time meeting to do with the anti-drug campaign. Then last night I attended the usual Thursday night meal for 50 homeless people ... at a new location .... under the tent of one of the singing areas behind Kowloon Central Post Office. A very happy occasion.

But as I went to sleep last night, happy thoughts about the meal and about All Saints Day competed in my brain with fears about a toxic mix of violent protesters and Halloween revelers brewing in areas like Lan Kwai Fong where 21 people were killed and 62 injured in a large-scale human stampede whilst celebrating New Year in 1993.

c.f. Readings for All Saints Day

Revelation 7.9-17: I saw a huge number, impossible to count, of people from every nation, race, and language. They were standing in front of the throne, with palms in their hands. They shouted: "Victory to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb". One of the elders told me who these people are: "These are the people who have been through the great persecution. They now serve God day and night in his sanctuary. The Lamb is their Shepherd. He leads them to springs of living water. God has wiped away all tears from their eyes"
Jesus, please help sorrowing people who are crying today

My recording of this reading

Psalm 24: The Lord's is the earth and its fullness, the world and all its peoples. It is he who set it on the seas; on the waters he made it firm. Who shall climb the mountain of the Lord? Who shall stand in his holy place? People with clean hands and pure hearts, who desire not worthless things. They shall receive blessings from the Lord and reward from the God who saves them. Such are the people who seek him, seek the face of the God of Jacob.
God, by living a good life, help me to seek your face

Recording

1 John 3.1-3: Think of the love that the Father has lavished on us by letting us be called God's children. And God's love has even more in store for us in the future: we shall be like him because we shall see him as he really is. This is why we must try to live good lives. We must try to be as good as Christ.
Jesus, please help me be more like you

Recording

Matthew 5.1-12: Jesus said to the crowds: Blessed are poor and simple of heart people. They belong to the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are people who are going through great sorrow. Their hearts will be filled with peace. Blessed are people who lead just and honest lives. They will see the victory of goodness. Blessed are people who show mercy to others. God will be merciful to them. Blessed are people who have a clean heart. They will see God. Blessed are people who are peacemakers. They are God's children. Blessed are people who are persecuted for the cause of right. They will receive a great reward in heaven.
Jesus, please help me be merciful and kind and just

Yesterday afternoon I had the happiness of spending time with the Indonesian woman acquitted two days ago .... together with her compatriot acquitted in June who was a witness for her. The happiness of people just released from prison is a powerful image of what Day One in Heaven will be like!

Ezekiel 33-34: God told Ezekiel to say this to Israel's leaders: "Punishment is coming for you shepherds who have fed ourselves
but not looked after the sheep. You have failed to make the weak sheep strong, or to care for the sick ones. You have failed to bring back stray sheep or look for lost sheep. On the contrary, you have been cruel to the sheep and treated them badly. Therefore I will look after my flock myself. I will rescue them from where they have been scattered. I will look for the lost one, bring back the stray, bandage the injured, and make the weak strong. I will also judge the sheep themselves. I will judge the fat sheep which have bullied the weak sheep. I will raise up a special shepherd and put him in charge of all my sheep."

Lord, please help all leaders care for their people, like Jesus the Good Shepherd

Psalms 14-15: So many people live and act as if God doesn't exist. Some foolish people even say there is no God. So many people have left the way of justice and truth. So many people follow the way of falsehood. Lord, help us to live as we should.
Help us not to slander, help us not to wrong others.

Lord, help us to stand firm in the way of goodness

Recording

Ephesians 4.1-16: I implore you to lead a life worthy of your vocation. Bear with one another charitably, in complete selflessness, gentleness and patience. If we live by the truth and in love, we shall become more and more like Christ. We are parts of the Body of Christ. Christ is the head. Each part must do its bit to keep the Body healthy and growing in love
Jesus, help me understand how the Church is your Body

Matthew 8.1-3: In Jesus' time, it was illegal for anyone to touch a leper, and it was illegal for lepers  to go near other people. But one day a leper broke the law. He came right up to Jesus and said "If you want to, you can heal me." Jesus also broke the law. He stretched out his hand, touched the leper, and said "Of course I want to heal you. Be healed!" The man was healed immediately.
Jesus, I didn't know you were a law-breaker.  I guess this means that sometimes, in special cases,  it's ok to break the law

Wed Oct 30

Last June at the High Court of HK an Indonesian woman was acquitted 7:0 by a jury after being tricked by a Nigerian man in Cambodia to bring drugs to HK. After a couple of weeks with her family back in Indonesia, the woman returned to HK to be a witness at the trial of another Indonesian woman tricked by the same Nigerian in Cambodia. The second woman's trial finished yesterday - she also was jury-acquitted, 6:1. I could not attend the trial ... I was in Malaysia last week and was not free Monday or yesterday. But this morning at the monthly O.M.I. retreat I prayed and prayed for the second woman ...just as many other HK people and the woman's family/friends also were praying. Now for the part you don't have to believe: as I left Austin Station yesterday afternoon on the way home from the retreat, as I walked along Jordan Road, an Indonesian woman with a loaded shopping trolley coming in the opposite direction stopped and smiled at me. I smiled back, and we both kept walking. I have no idea who she was but I took it as a sign that the High Court trial had ended happily. Sure enough, just as I got home, the W/App messages from various friends started coming "She's free!" Thank you Jesus that D. is free!

Ezekiel 19-32: Ezekiel continued to speak God's message: "Since my people have forgotten me and followed false ways,

Lord, please help all peoples know and love you

Psalms 9-13: I will praise you, Lord, with all my heart. You have so often rescued me from trouble. Thank you! You are the best helper for people in trouble. Please keep on helping me when troubles come. Please stop bad people from hurting others.
Please let peoples in all countries know they must avoid evil and live a life of justice.

Ephesians 3.14-21: This is what I pray, kneeling before the Father from whom every family, whether spiritual or natural, takes it name: May he give you  power through his Spirit for your hidden self to grow strong. May Christ live in your hearts through faith. Planted in love and built on love, may you continually focus on the love of Christ, until your life is filled with that love. Glory be to him whose power  working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine. Glory be to him from generation to generation in the Church and in Christ Jesus for ever and ever. Amen
Listen

Matthew 7.1-27: Jesus said to the people: Do not judge other people, and God will not judge you. It's so easy to be aware of other people's faults yet be blind to your own faults. Persevere in prayer. Ask and you will receive. Search and you will find.
Knock and the door will be opened. You like to give good things to your children. God likes to give good things to you. Treat other people the way you would like them to treat you.

Beware of bad leaders. A sure way to know if someone is good or bad: are their actions good or bad?

If you put my words into practice, you are like someone who builds his house on rock. If you ignore my words, you are like someone who builds his house on sand.
Jesus, please help me put your words into practice

Tues Oct 8

The collapse of HK is continuing at exponential speed: Vandals bring HK to standstill. Yesterday before midday as I crossed the intersection of Nathan Road and Jordan Road to join two very special friends for a Yum Cha, I noticed the traffic and pedestrian lights were not working ... with pedestrians running the gauntlet between buses, trucks and cars to cross the road .... and vehicles blasting horns trying to force their way through the intersection .... with not a few near-misses. I actually made a video of a police car going through the intersection, but not stopping to help the situation.

More than an hour later when I returned to the same place, after the Yum Cha, the situation was just as chaotic. So, I went home, got my trusty bush hat, and went back to the intersection as a volunteer traffic guide .... for which, as the afternoon went on, many dozens of bus drivers and other drivers waved a thank you sign to me as they went past. Many pedestrians gave me bottles of water ... from a few of which I took a few mouthfuls before putting the bottles at an crossing island.

After about 30 minutes a police car stopped and several policeman told me to stop. I said I'd be happy to stop if they would do the job. They asked me to get in their car. I declined and walked to a footpath. Then I went home for a drink and toilet break. Then went back. Police still not helping. So I went back to work. Having a bus licence (in Australia and formerly in HK) I understand traffic and felt in no danger. Just got tired after another 90 minute stint. With a cramp in my left foot. So I went again to the footpath. Providential timing. Within a minute another police car came and two polite officers and I had the same conversation as above. They told me to go. I said I would go if they would do their job. My left foot and tiredness decided on a trip home, where I had a shower (very hot weather) and rest.

About 6.30pm I went back to the intersection ....as part of a prayer walk ...and was pleased to see 4 (!) traffic policeman on the job. But when I returned around 7pm they were just leaving ....walking away from a dangerous situation. So I ask myself, as on last night's menu: why are police not on the job? Why are they letting vandals have hours of freedom to wreck MTR stations and smash shops? Some people say the authorities want to see HK in chaos so that the PLA can come in and restore order and rule will be from Beijing. To this end, some people even say that some of the destruction is being done by undercover policemen .... maybe from the Mainland since some don't speak HK Cantonese.

Some people say that while the vast majority of protesters are peaceful, there's a small minority of radical vandals whose aim is anarchy. No mainstream media will talk much about this, but in private many people feel that former legislator "Long Hair" Leung Kwok Hung is one of the masterminds of the destruction that "spontaneously" breaks out at the same time at so many locations. Wikipedia's main article (with it's many links) shows he was/is a Trotskyist, anarchist and revolutionary Marxist.

So, the vandalising is maybe coming from more than one source, but it is turning one of the safest and most beautiful cities in the world into a place of destruction and despondency. I felt absolutely gutted last night as I walked down Nathan Road from Jordan Road to Waterloo Road, seeing the trail of destruction ...especially my beloved Kowloon Central Post Office whose doors and windows have been smashed and the front of the building covered in "campaign signs". And I noticed many groups of mainly young people in black carrying umbrellas (on a fine night) heading towards Mong Kok ....trouble brewing there.

Violence just makes things worse. And this is a lesson that the HK government is just not getting. It caused the original peaceful protests (by its crazy extradition amendment) and then by ignoring the peaceful protesters, the govt bred violence, bred radical vandals ..some of whom didn't need much breeding .... they were waiting for a chance to destroy HK. The govt has handed HK to them on a petrol bomb.

Is this all a bad dream? If only. But today is another day .... and how will people get to work and school with the MTR badly damaged and under threat after four nights of destruction (Frid, Sat, Sun, public holiday yesterday for Chung Yeung Festival)? God, please help HK get out of this mess! Please thwart the plans of the wicked!

The Book Blog:   4 readings + recordings
Comments welcome here
Readings are from Simple Bible

Jeremiah 7: At the gate of the Temple in Jerusalem, Jeremiah proclaimed the word of the Lord: "You people of Judah who come here to worship, amend your behavior and actions, and then I, the Lord,  will meet you here in this Temple. Do not exploit the stranger, the orphan and the widow. Do not follow alien gods, do not break the Commandments. If you don't care about bad behavior and yet keep on coming to my Temple for worship, your worship is useless and you are turning this Temple into a robbers' den. This nation refuses to listen to the Lord. Sincerity has vanished since worship and behavior are not related."
Lord, please help me "practise what I preach"

My recording of this reading

Psalm 137: By the rivers of Babylon we sat and cried, remembering Zion. On the poplars that grew there we hung up our harps. For it was there that they asked us, our captors, for songs. "Sing to us", they said, "one of Zion's songs". O how could we sing the song of the Lord on alien soil? If I forget you, Jerusalem, let my right hand wither. O let my tongue cleave to my mouth
if I remember you not, Jerusalem, above all my joys

Lord, please help  people who have been exiled from their homeland

Galatians 1.11-24: The Good News I preach is not a human message. It is something I received from Jesus Christ. I used to persecute the church, but then God called me to follow Jesus. I am a one-time persecutor who is now preaching the faith I had previously tried to destroy. When I visited Jerusalem three years after my conversion, the believers gave glory to God for what he had done for me
Jesus, please turn more persecutors into preachers!

John 20.1-10: Before dawn the next morning, Sunday, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb.  She saw the stone had been moved from the tomb's entrance. She ran to Peter and John and said "Someone has taken the Lord out of the tomb". They ran back to the tomb. Peter went in first. He saw that the linen cloths were on the ground. But the cloth that had been around Jesus' head was not on the ground. It was neatly folded and in a place by itself. Then John went into the tomb. He saw, and he believed
Jesus, I believe you rose from the dead. Please increase my faith
