Virus: Today is a good day to pray for everyone with the Wuhan virus. Today is the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes ... World Day of the Sick - for which Pope Francis has published a special letter

"Super spreader" took virus from Singapore to UK via France *** HK 10 new cases in one day

Yesterday morning I continued to work through a bag log of mail etc. In the afternoon I went to the Chinese University office in Tsim Sha Tsui to enrol 11 prisoners ... and a bookstore to get textbooks for prisoners .... and Rosary Church for a bit of thank you time after trip to Africa and a bit of please time re the virus.

c.f. Readings for Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes

Isaiah 62-66: The Lord says: "My eyes are drawn to the humble and contrite person who lovingly meditates on my word. Towards Jerusalem I will send peace, flowing like a river. I am going to gather the nations of every language. All peoples will know and love me
Lord, please give me more love for the Bible. Please give the world more peace. Please help all peoples know and love you

My recording of this reading

Psalm 87: On the holy mountain is Jerusalem, the Lord's cherished city. Of you are told glorious things, O city of God. All nations are called to serve and love the Lord. And Jerusalem shall be called their spiritual mother, for all shall be her children. In Jerusalem everyone will be welcome and find a home.
Lord, may Jerusalem be a place of peace and prayer for all peoples

Listen

Revelation 12.1-6: A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman, dressed in the sun, standing on the moon, crowned with 12 stars. She was giving birth to a child, and she cried out in the pain of childbirth. Then a second sign appeared: a huge red dragon, which wanted to eat the child. The woman gave birth to a son, the ruler of all nations. The son was taken straight up to heaven, to God on his throne. The woman escaped to safety in the desert, to a place prepared for her by God.
Jesus, protect us from Satan who goes round like a hungry lion wanting to eat us
Listen

John 2.1-11: Jesus, his mother and his disciples were guests at a wedding at Cana in Galilee. The wine ran out, so Jesus' mother said to him "They have no wine". Jesus replied "Woman, my time for doing special things has not yet come". His mother said to the servants "Do whatever he tells you". There were 6 big containers there, used for holding water. Each could hold about 35 liters. Jesus said to the servants "Fill the containers with water" and they filled them up. Jesus then said "take some out and give it to the man in charge of the banquet".  When the man tasted the water, it had turned to wine. The man called the bridegroom and said "You have kept the best wine until now". This was the first public miracle done by Jesus
Jesus,  help me to do whatever you tell me to do

Listen

Reflection on the above readings: Without Mary's request, Jesus would not have changed water to wine. Our prayer requests also can get "water" (e.g. sickness) changed to wine (good health)

Virus:  Amazing dedication - and stress - of Wuhan medical staff (4 min video)

From a reader in South Africa: Corruption at Johannesburg airport - 2009 article (with the comment "Nothing has changed"!) *** Although ... two days ago something different happened: 3 drug mules arrested Johannesburg airport last Sat (one of them bound for HK!) ... maybe the recent press conference had an effect. And ... from a special source: another mule due to be arrested yesterday!

Early last night I had a canteen meal with two Indonesian women recently jury-acquitted of drug trafficking charges. Nothing makes a prison chaplain happier than to meet on the "outside" people who were visited on the "inside"!

Exodus 14: Not long after the Israelites left Egypt Pharaoh again changed his mind. He decided to catch the Israelites and make them return to Egypt. The Israelites were near the edge of the Red Sea when they saw the Egyptians approaching. The Israelites cried out in fear but Moses said to them "Do not be afraid. God will do the fighting for you." God then told Moses to stretch out his staff over the sea. After he did so, a strong wind blew all night and caused the waters to part. Then the Israelites walked through the sea on dry ground, with walls of water on both sides. The Egyptians gave chase and also went into the sea. When the Israelites had crossed to the other side Moses again stretched out his staff over the sea and this time the sea returned to its normal flow, drowning all the Egyptians. The people offered thanksgiving and praise to God.
Dear God, please rescue people in trouble, just as you rescued the Israelites when they were in trouble

My recording of this reading

Psalm 123: To you have I lifted up my eyes, you who dwell in the heavens. My eyes, like the eyes of slaves on the hand of their lords. Like the eyes of a servant on the hand of her mistress, so our eyes are on the Lord our God till he show us mercy. Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy. We are filled with contempt. Indeed all too full is our soul with the scorn of the rich, with the proud man's disdain.
Lord, please protect poor people from being exploited by rich people
Listen

Hebrews 1.1-4: At various times in the past and in various different ways, God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets. But in our own time, he has spoken to us through his Son, through whom he made everything. He is the radiant light of God the Father's glory. He has sacrificed himself for sinners. He has taken his place at the right hand of the Father. He is far greater than any angel
Jesus, deepen my understanding of who you are

Listen

Mark 1.40-45: A leper came to Jesus and on his knees pleaded "If you want to, you can heal me". Feeling sorry for him, Jesus stretched out his hand, touched him and said "Of course I want to heal you. Be healed!" The leprosy left him at that moment and he was healed. Jesus told the man not to tell people what had happened (in case people misunderstood Jesus' spiritual mission and tried to use him politically).  But the man told everyone. Soon Jesus could not go openly into any town (for fear the crowds would become unruly) so he stayed in remote places. Even so, people from all around the district would come to him.
Jesus, please heal people who are lepers

Reflection on the above readings: I can't find a good answer in Google to the question: "Where did the Egyptians get their horses .... weren't all animals killed in one of the plagues? (If you can find a good answer, please send to me: jdwomi@gmail.com)

Sun Feb 9

Yesterday I began the task of processing some 40 letters received while I was in Africa. Nearly all of them from prisoners in HK ....who write letters because ... they do not have access to the internet!

Yesterday a friend sent me a video on W/App about the terrible conditions under which doctors are working in Wuhan. It made me remember the Wuhan medical staff constantly in prayer during the day and last night. I will try to find the video - it will shift our concerns about ourselves in HK or other places to Wuhan.

This was being widely advertised when I was in South Africa last week. Now I understand why South Africa loves Federer! Record crowd for Federer-Nadal Cape Town exhibition

c.f. readings for Sunday 5

Isaiah 57-58: Tell my people their faults, tell the House of Jacob its sins. Tell them that their fasting is a sham. Fasting and injustice cannot go together. This is the sort of fast that pleases the Lord: breaking unjust fetters, sharing your bread with the hungry, sheltering and clothing the homeless poor. Do this and you will find healing and peace. Do this and the Lord will give strength to your bones.
Lord, please help me do more to help poor people

My recording of this reading

Psalm 112: Happy are people who love and honor the Lord, who take delight in his commands. The children of such people will be blessed. Such people are a light in the darkness for others. Such people are generous, merciful and just. They take pity and help those in need. They conduct their affairs with  integrity. Open-handed they give to the poor. Their justice and goodness will never be forgotten.
Lord, please help me do more for the poor

Recording

1 Corinthians 1.18 - 2.9: The language of the Cross doesn't make sense for some people. But for us it is God's power to save. While the Jews demand miracles and the Greeks require philosophy, here we are preaching a crucified Christ: to the Jews an obstacle they cannot get over, to the pagans madness. During my stay with you, I relied not on philosophy or my own efforts, but only on the power of the Spirit. The wisdom we teach is about things no eye has seen, and no ear has heard, things beyond human understanding - all that God has prepared for those who love him.
Jesus, crucified Lord, please increase my faith in you

Recording

Matthew 5.13-48: Jesus said to the crowds: You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its taste, it's no use for anything. You are the light of the world. Let the world see your light, your good deeds. When people see you doing good deeds, people will praise God. I have not come to abolish the Jewish religion. I have come to raise it to a higher level of goodness. Your goodness must not just be something superficial. Your goodness must be something from the heart. You must avoid anger and insult, just like you avoid murder. If you have offended someone, say "Sorry". You must avoid lustful looks and thoughts. Looking at someone lustfully is immorality of the heart. Love and pray for people who are unkind to you. This is the way to practise the highest level of goodness.
Jesus,  please help me practise a higher level of goodness

Recording

Reflection on the above readings: We have many opportunities each day to be "the light of the world" ....e.g. by helping poor people (today's first reading), by being forgiving/honest/compassionate/truthful at home/work/school etc .....and maybe a special way: by wearing a Cross ... which in this part of the world can have a second aim: to ask for protection from the Wuhan virus.

Sat Feb 8

Yesterday I was a Tai Lam women's prison from 9am to 6pm. Sad to meet some newly arrived drug mules (one from Malaysia, one from South America ... and one from Kenya on the way after temporary stop in hospital). Meeting them gave me energy to want to continue the anti-drug campaign: prevention better than cure ... the best way to help prisoners is to help them not go to prison!

Virus: Taiwan couple caught virus on HK flight *** Rage over death of whistleblower doctor *** Yesterday's Ming Pao editorial quotes one expert as saying that if the government allows the virus to spread, then 20-30% of HK's population might become infected, and the death toll will be too scary to imagine *** Airlines cancel 100s of flights to HK *** My reflection: Wear a mask ... and a Cross (and use Holy Water before going out of home ... like blood on doors - first reading, below)

Exodus 12-13: God said to Moses and Aaron "From now on, this month is to be the first month of your year. On the evening of the 14th day of this month each family must kill and eat a one year old male sheep or goat. Some of its blood must be put on your front door. You must eat it in a hurry, with a belt round your waist, sandals on your feet and a staff in your hand. This night I will go through the land of Egypt and strike every first-born Egyptian But when I see the blood on your doors I shall PASS OVER your homes and you shall be unharmed. Each year you must remember this night. Each year you must observe this feast of the Passover. You also must consecrate all first-born to me.

That night God indeed struck dead the first-born of all the Egyptians, including the son of Pharaoh. There was great mourning in Egypt and Pharaoh finally agreed to let the Israelites go. The Israelites now numbered about 600,000 men, having been in Egypt exactly 430 years.

As the people travelled, God went before them in the form of a pillar of cloud during the day and a pillar of fire at night.

Dear God, please help me understand the full meaning of the Passover story

Psalm 122: I rejoiced when I heard them say "Let us go to God's house." And now our feet are standing within your gates, O Jerusalem. For the peace of Jerusalem pray "Peace be to your homes." For love of the house of the Lord I will ask for your good.
Lord, may your peace be in our hearts and homes

Listen

Philemon 9-25: While here in prison, I have helped someone you know to become a believer. He is carrying this letter - Onesimus. I'm sending him back to you, no longer your slave, but your brother in Christ. Please welcome him as you would welcome me. And let me pay for anything he stole from you. May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you
Jesus, please put an end to slavery in the world

Listen

Mark 1.35-39: The next morning, long before dawn, Jesus left the house and went off to a lonely place to pray. When Simon and the other fishermen found him, they said "Everyone is looking for you". Jesus replied "We must go to the nearby towns,
so that I can preach there too, because that is why I came"
. Jesus went all through Galilee, preaching in the prayer halls and casting out devils.

Jesus, may every town on earth welcome you and hear your message

Reflection on the above readings: Jesus knew the future. He must have had mixed feelings each year when the Passover was celebrated

Exodus 11: One last time God sent Moses to Pharaoh, with this message: "Tonight at midnight, God's angel will pass through Egypt. All the first-born in the land of Egypt will die, except the first-born of the Israelites."
Dear God, please bless everyone in Egypt!

Psalms 120-121: I call to the Lord in the hour of my distress: "Lord save me from people who speak with lying lips". Long enough have I been dwelling with those who hate peace. I am for peace, but they are for fighting. I lift up my eyes to the mountains. From where shall come my help? My help shall come from the Lord who made heaven and earth. The Lord is our guard and our shade. Day and night we shall not be afraid. The Lord will guard our going and coming both now and forever.

Philemon 1-7: From Paul, a prisoner for Christ Jesus, and from our brother Timothy, to our dear fellow worker Philemon and the church that meets in your house. Mark 1.29-34: Jesus  went to the home of Simon and Andrew. Simon's mother-in-law was sick in bed with a fever. Jesus took her by the hand and helped her up. He also cast out many devils.

Thu Feb 6

My body is now back in HK but parts of my mind and heart are still in Africa. Yesterday I set up a W/App group with some key journalists in Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania and South Africa .... and an email group for some key government anti-drug officials in the 4 nations... hoping that this sort of thing will soon happen in Addis Ababa and Johannesburg:
This is good news! Malaysia tightens airport security (+ report in Chinese) ... Malaysian media and I pushed hard for this!

On the plane from Addis Ababa to HK two nights ago, I met a lady from Australia who belongs to a wonderful organization World Families Australia which has been most practical in helping poor people in Ethiopia. One of the organization's state presidents in Australia was formerly principal of a primary school in an O.M.I. parish in his state!

Exodus 10: Pharaoh's advisers urged him to let the Israelites go. They said to him "How much longer is this affair going to go on? Let the Israelites go before Egypt is ruined." Pharaoh agreed to let the men go, but not the rest of the people. So God sent two more plagues on the Egyptians: locusts which devoured all the plants and trees, and then three days of total darkness, except in the land where the Israelites lived. But even after the above nine plagues, Pharaoh still wouldn't let the Israelites go.
Dear God, stubbornness can sometimes be a good thing, but please don't let me be stubborn if that will hurt other people

Psalm 119: They are happy who follow God's word, those who seek God with all their hearts. How can young people avoid evil? By seeking you and obeying you, Lord. Open my eyes, Lord, that I may understand the beauty of your word. Lord, when I'm worried or in trouble, your word revives me and gives me strength. Lord, keep my eyes from what is false. Bend my heart to your word and not to love of gain. The word from your mouth means more to me than silver and gold. The unfolding of your word gives light and teaches simple people.
Lord, thank you for your word which gives peace to our hearts

Recording

Titus 3.8-15: Tell people to keep their minds occupied in doing good works. Avoid useless speculations about trivial matters. All believers, including elders, should try to be self-supporting. Grace be with you all
Jesus, help me be a doer and not just a talker

Listen

Mark 1.21-28: Jesus and the fishermen went to the town of Capernaum. On the Sabbath Jesus began to teach in the local  prayer hall. The listeners were deeply impressed by Jesus' teaching. Unlike the religious leaders, Jesus taught with authority. That very day in the prayer hall there was a man possessed by an evil spirit.  The spirit shouted out "Have you come to destroy me, Jesus of Nazareth?  I know who you are: the Holy One of God." Jesus said strongly "Be quiet! Come out of him!" The evil spirit threw the man on the ground and with a loud cry went out of him. The people in the prayer hall were amazed. They said
"Here is a teaching which has authority. Even evil spirits obey him." Jesus' reputation quickly spread throughout the whole district.

Jesus, Holy One of God, please protect my family from evil

Listen

Reflection on the above Bible readings: "Authority" in today's Gospel means power ... when you order something to happen ... it happens! In contrast to Jesus, the religious authorities were powerless to combat sickness and evil spirits.

Hello from HK where I arrived at 11.45pm last night from Addis Ababa via Manila. Thank you Jesus for so much safe travelling over the past few weeks. Please bless everyone I met in Africa, and bless the kind friends in HK who made the trip possible. Hopefully the trip to cause a slow down in the number of drug mules coming to HK from Africa ... and give hope and encouragement to the prisoners' families I met in Africa. I will try to prepare a summary of the trip over the next week.

Exodus 9: Through Moses, God kept saying to Pharaoh "Let my people go to offer me worship."
But Pharaoh kept refusing to let the people go.
So God sent three more plagues: all the Egyptians' animals died, then all the Egyptians were covered with boils, then the land was hit by a fierce hailstorm. During the hailstorm, Pharaoh said the people could go. But as soon as the storm stopped, he changed his mind again.

Dear God, please help us not to ignore your voice

My recording of this reading

Psalm 118:
Give thanks to the Lord for he is good. His love has no end. Let the sons of Israel say:
"His love has no end." Let those who honor the Lord say: "His love has no end." It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in humans. It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes. I was falling, falling, falling, but the Lord was my helper. The Lord is my strength and my song. He is my saviour. The Lord's right hand has triumphed. His right hand has raised me up. I shall not die, I shall live and recount all his deeds. The stone which the builders rejected has become the corner stone. This is the work of the Lord, a marvel in our eyes. This day was made by the Lord. We rejoice and are glad.

Lord, we give thanks to you, for you are good. Your love has no end

Listen

Titus 3.1-7: Remind everyone to be obedient to government officials; to be ready to do good at every opportunity; not to go slandering other people or picking quarrels; to be courteous and polite to everyone. There was a time when we too were ignorant; when we lived in wickedness and ill-will, hating each other and hateful ourselves. But then the kindness and love of God our Saviour were revealed, and God saved us because of his compassion. God saved us by the cleansing water of rebirth, and by renewing us with the Holy Spirit whom he has poured over us through Jesus Christ our Saviour. So we are justified by his grace, and look forward to eternal life
Jesus, Saviour of the world, you are our Saviour

Mark 1.14-20: Jesus went to Galilee and proclaimed the Good News from God. "The time has come" he said "and the kingdom of God is close at hand. Repent, and believe the Good News." As he was walking along by the sea of Galilee, he saw two fishermen Simon and his brother Andrew.  Jesus said to them "Follow me and I will make you into fishers of men".  Simon and Andrew then followed Jesus. Going a little further, Jesus saw two more fishermen James and his brother John. He called them also to follow him.  They left their nets and boat and followed him.
Jesus, please bless all the people who work full time as "fishers of men"
