Isaiah
62-66: The Lord says:
"My eyes are drawn to the humble and contrite person
who lovingly meditates on my word. Towards Jerusalem I will send peace,
flowing like a river. I am going to gather the nations of every language.
All peoples will know and love me
Lord, please give me more love
for the Bible. Please give the world more peace. Please help all peoples know and love you
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
87: On the holy mountain is Jerusalem,
the Lord's cherished city. Of you are told glorious things, O city of God.
All nations are called to serve and love the
Lord.
And Jerusalem shall be called their spiritual mother,
for all shall be her children. In Jerusalem everyone will be welcome and find
a home.
Lord, may Jerusalem be a place
of peace and prayer for all peoples

Revelation
12.1-6:
A great sign appeared in heaven:
a woman, dressed in the sun, standing on the moon,
crowned with 12 stars. She was giving birth to a
child,
and she cried out in the pain of childbirth. Then a second sign appeared:
a huge red dragon, which wanted to eat the child. The
woman gave birth to a son, the ruler of
all nations. The
son was taken straight up to heaven, to God on his throne.
The woman escaped to safety in the desert,
to a place prepared for her by God.
Jesus, protect us from Satan
who goes round like a hungry lion wanting to eat us

John
2.1-11:
Jesus, his mother and his disciples were
guests at a wedding at Cana in Galilee. The wine ran out, so Jesus' mother said to him
"They have no wine".
Jesus replied "Woman, my time for doing special things has not yet
come". His mother said to the servants
"Do whatever he tells you". There were 6 big containers there, used for
holding water. Each could hold about 35 liters. Jesus said to the servants
"Fill the containers with water" and they filled them up. Jesus then said "take some out and give
it to the man in charge of the banquet". When the man tasted
the water, it had turned to wine. The man called the bridegroom and said
"You have kept the best wine until now". This was the first public miracle done by
Jesus

me to do

Reflection on the above readings: Without Mary's request, Jesus would not have changed water to wine. Our prayer requests also can get "water" (e.g. sickness) changed to wine (good health)

Virus: Amazing dedication - and stress - of Wuhan medical staff (4 min video)
From a reader in South Africa: Corruption
at Johannesburg airport - 2009 article (with the comment "Nothing has
changed"!) *** Although ... two days
ago something different happened: 3
drug mules arrested Johannesburg airport last Sat (one of them bound for
HK!) ... maybe the recent press conference had an effect. And ... from a special
source: another mule due to be arrested yesterday!
Early last night I had a canteen meal with two Indonesian women
recently jury-acquitted of drug trafficking charges. Nothing makes a prison
chaplain happier than to meet on the "outside" people who were visited
on the "inside"!

123:
To you have I lifted up my eyes,
you who dwell in the heavens. My eyes, like the eyes of slaves
on the hand of their lords. Like the eyes of a servant on the hand of her
mistress,
so our eyes are on the Lord our God till he show us mercy. Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy.

1.1-4: At various times in the past and in various
different ways, God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets. But in our own time, he has spoken to us
through his Son,
through whom he made everything.
He is the radiant light of God the Father's glory. He has sacrificed himself for sinners.
He has taken his place at the right hand of the Father.
He is far greater than any angel

Mark
1.40-45: A leper came to Jesus and on his knees
pleaded
"If you want to, you can heal me". Feeling sorry for him, Jesus stretched out his
hand,
touched him and said "Of course I want to heal you. Be healed!"
The leprosy left him at that moment and he was
healed. Jesus told the man not to tell people what had
happened
(in case people misunderstood Jesus' spiritual mission and tried to use
him politically). But the man told everyone. Soon Jesus could not go openly into any town
(for fear the crowds would become unruly) so he stayed in remote places. Even so, people from all around the district
would come to him.
Jesus, please heal people who
are lepers

Yesterday I began the task of processing some 40 letters received while I was in Africa. Nearly all of them from prisoners in HK ....who write letters because ... they do not have access to the internet!
Yesterday a friend sent me a video on W/App about the terrible
conditions under which doctors are working in Wuhan. It made me remember the
Wuhan medical staff constantly in prayer during the day and last night. I will
try to find the video - it will shift our concerns about ourselves in HK or
other places to Wuhan.
This was being widely advertised when I was in South Africa last
week. Now I understand why South Africa loves Federer! Record

c.f. readings for Sunday 5
Isaiah
57-58: Tell my people their faults,
tell the House of Jacob its sins. Tell them that their fasting is a
sham.
Fasting and injustice cannot go together. This is the sort of fast that
pleases the Lord:
breaking unjust fetters,
sharing your bread with the hungry,
sheltering and clothing the homeless poor. Do this and you will find healing
and peace.
Do this and the Lord will give strength to your bones.
Lord, please help me do more to
help poor people
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
112: Happy are people who love and honor the Lord,
who take delight in his commands.
The children of such people will be blessed. Such people are a light in the darkness for
others.
Such people are generous, merciful and just. They take pity and help those in need.
They conduct their affairs with integrity. Open-handed they give to the
poor.
Their justice and goodness will never be forgotten.
Lord, please help me do more
for the poor

Corinthians 1.18 - 2.9: The language of the Cross doesn't make sense
for some people. But for us it is God's power to save. While the Jews demand miracles and the Greeks
require philosophy, here we are preaching a crucified Christ: to the Jews
an obstacle they cannot get over, to the pagans madness. During my stay with you, I relied not on
philosophy or my own efforts, but only on the power of the
Spirit. The wisdom we teach is about things no eye has
seen, and no ear has heard, things beyond human understanding - all that
God has prepared for those who love him.
Jesus, crucified Lord, please increase my
faith in you
Matthew
5.13-48: Jesus said to the crowds:
You are the salt of the
earth.
But if salt loses its taste, it's no use for anything. You are the light of
the world.
Let the world see your light, your good deeds.
When people see you doing good deeds,
people will praise God.
I have not come to
abolish the Jewish religion.
I have come to raise it to a higher level of goodness. Your goodness must not
just be something superficial.
Your goodness must be something from the heart. You must avoid anger
and insult, just like you avoid murder.
If you have offended someone, say "Sorry". You must avoid lustful
looks and thoughts.
Looking at someone lustfully is immorality of the heart. Love and pray for
people who are unkind to you.
This is the way to practise the highest level of goodness.
Jesus, please help me
practise a higher level of goodness

Reflection on the above readings: We have many opportunities each day to be "the light of the world" ....e.g. by helping poor people (today's first reading), by being forgiving/honest/compassionate/truthful at home/work/school etc .....and maybe a special way: by wearing a Cross ... which in this part of the world can have a second aim: to ask for protection from the Wuhan virus.

Yesterday I was a Tai Lam women's prison from 9am to 6pm. Sad to
meet some newly arrived drug mules (one from Malaysia, one from South America

better than cure ... the best way to help prisoners is to help them not go to

Pharaoh's
advisers urged him to let the Israelites go.
They said to him "How much longer is this affair going to go on?
Let the Israelites go before Egypt
is ruined."
Pharaoh agreed to let the men go, but not the rest of the people.
So God sent two more plagues on the Egyptians:
locusts which devoured all the plants and trees,
and then three days of total darkness,
except in the land where the Israelites lived.
But even after the above nine plagues,
Pharaoh still wouldn't let the Israelites go.

1.21-28: Jesus and the fishermen went to the town of
Capernaum.
On the Sabbath Jesus began to teach in the local prayer hall.
The listeners were deeply impressed by Jesus' teaching.
Unlike the religious leaders, Jesus taught with authority. That very day in the prayer hall there was a
man possessed by an evil spirit. The spirit shouted out "Have
you come to destroy me, Jesus of Nazareth? I know who you are: the
Holy One of God." Jesus said strongly "Be quiet! Come out
of him!"
The evil spirit threw the man on the ground and with a loud cry went out
of him. The people in the prayer hall were amazed.
They said
"Here is a teaching which has
authority. Even evil spirits obey
him." Jesus' reputation quickly spread throughout
the whole district.
Jesus, Holy One of God, please
protect my family from evil

"Let my people go to offer me worship."
But Pharaoh kept refusing to let the people

So God sent three more plagues:
all the Egyptians' animals died,
then all the Egyptians were covered with boils,
then the land was hit by a fierce hailstorm.
During the hailstorm, Pharaoh said the people could go.
But as soon as the storm stopped, he changed his mind again.

Psalm 118: Give thanks to the Lord for he is good.
His love has no end. Let the sons of Israel say:
"His love has no end."
Let those who honor the Lord say: "His love has no end." It is better to take refuge in the Lord than
to trust in humans.
It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes. I was falling, falling, falling,
but the Lord was my helper. The Lord is my strength and my song.
He is my saviour. The Lord's right hand has triumphed.
His right hand has raised me up. I shall not die, I shall live
and recount all his deeds. The stone which the builders rejected
has become the corner stone. This is the work of the Lord,
a marvel in our eyes. This day was made by the Lord.
We rejoice and are glad.

Titus
3.1-7: Remind everyone to be obedient to government
officials; to be ready to do good at every opportunity; not to go
slandering other people or picking quarrels; to be courteous and polite to
everyone. There was a time when we too were ignorant;
when we lived in wickedness and ill-will, hating each other and hateful
ourselves. But then the kindness and love of God our
Saviour were revealed, and God saved us because of his compassion. God saved us by the cleansing water of
rebirth, and by renewing us with the Holy Spirit whom he has poured over
us through Jesus Christ our Saviour. So we are justified by his grace, and look

he saw two fishermen Simon and his brother Andrew. Jesus said to
them "Follow me and I will make you into fishers of men".
Simon and Andrew then followed Jesus.
Going a little further, Jesus saw two more fishermen James and his brother
John. He called them also to follow him. They left their nets and
boat and followed him.

people who work full time as "fishers of men"
