Last night, at the invitation of a kind professor at the City University of HK, I had my first experience of using a video conference program called Zoom ... during which I visited the professor's class ... which was, because of the virus, conducted online!

Virus: This calming article is well worth reading - Listen to facts, not rumours

My article in today's Ming Pao newspaper has the topic: The Wuhan virus .... and Africa. It's on Ming Pao website - click "Australian in HK". Text without recording

The Book Blog:   4 readings + recordings
Comments welcome here
Readings are from Simple Bible

Exodus 20: The Ten Commandments given by God to Moses:

1: I am the Lord your God. Do not worship anyone or anything else.

2: Use my name with respect. Do not insult my name.

3: Make the Sabbath Day a holy day each week.

4: Honor your father and your mother.

5: Do not kill.

6: Do not commit adultery.

7: Do not steal.

8: Do not tell lies.

9: Do not lust after someone else's wife.

10: Do not desire what belongs to someone else.

Dear God, please help us to put these commandments into practice
My recording of this reading

Psalm 130: Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord. Lord, hear my voice. If you, O Lord, should record our guilt, Lord, who would survive? But with you is found forgiveness. For this we revere you. My soul is waiting for the Lord. I count on his word. My soul is longing for the Lord more than watchman for the daybreak. With the Lord there is mercy and fullness of redemption. Israel indeed he will redeem from all its  iniquity.
Lord, please forgive me for all the bad things I have done

Listen

Hebrews 8.9 - 9.14: Jesus' priesthood is part of the new covenant predicted in the Scriptures: "See, the days are coming - it is the Lord who speaks - when I will establish a new covenant with the House of Israel". Jesus has come as High Priest of all the blessings that were predicted would be part of the new covenant. He has offered not the blood of animals like priests of the old covenant, but his own blood, by which he won our redemption. His blood can purify our inner self from dead actions, to help us in our life of dedication to the living God
Jesus, by your precious blood, purify my heart and protect me

Listen

Mark 3.13-19: Jesus went up a hill and called  his disciples. He chose 12 of them to be his special companions. He commissioned them for preaching. He gave them power to cast out devils. The names of the 12: Simon, to whom he gave the name Peter; James and John the sons of Zebedee. Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus,  Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot the one who would betray him.
Jesus, please bless and protect all Gospel workers

Listen

Reflection on the above readings: Even if we break all of the Ten Commandments .... Jesus' blood can purify us from dead actions .... since with the Lord is mercy and fullness of redemption

Mon Feb 17

On this day in 1826 Pope Leo XII approved the Oblates of Mary Immaculate as an international organisation. Special message for today from O.M.I. Superior General Fr Louis Lougen *** OMI chaplain's Jan 1 Mass in Congo prison

It was strange not to have a Sunday Mass in church yesterday. Please God the churches will be able to be used again soon. After my private home Mass yesterday morning, I spent much of the day working through a backlog of mail from prisoners. Late afternoon I hit the street to give out masks to homeless people ... for whom govt shelters were open for a free meal and accommodation last night because of the cold weather. As I walked in the wind and rain I again dreamed about an accommodation centre for homeless people - like Ozanam House in Melbourne

Exodus 19: The Israelites kept traveling and came to Mount Sinai (Mount Horeb). Through Moses, God told the people to prepare themselves for a special revelation from Heaven. Three days later a thick cloud covered the mountain accompanied by lightning and thunder and a trumpet blast which grew louder and louder. God then called Moses to the top of the mountain
and gave him "The Ten Commandments"

Dear God, please make us willing to hear your voice

My recording of this reading

Psalm 128: O blessed are those who love the Lord and walk in his ways. By the labor of your hands you shall eat. You will be happy and prosper: your wife like a fruitful vine in the heart of your house; your children like shoots of the olive, around your table. Indeed thus shall be blessed the people who love and honor the Lord. May the Lord bless you from Zion all the days of your life. May you see your children's children in a happy Jerusalem! On Israel, peace!
Dear Lord, may all married people live to see their children's children

Listen

Hebrews 7.1-28: Melchizedek was king of Salem and a priest of God. He blessed  Abraham.  Abraham gave Melchizedek 10% of all he had. Melchizedek's priesthood  continued down the ages in people dedicated to the service of God. It reached its perfection in the Son of God, the Eternal High Priest. The Son of God, our Lord, did not come from the priestly tribe of Levi. Everyone knows he came from the tribe of Judah. This is because he established a new priesthood, coming not from Levi, but from Melchizedek. This is why the prophecy was made of him "You are a priest of the order of Melchizedek, for ever". Jesus' priestly power to save us is utterly certain, since he is living for ever to intercede for all who come to God through him
Jesus, Eternal High Priest, please help all pastors and priests be more like you every day

Listen

Mark 3.7-12: Jesus went again to the Sea of Galilee. Great crowds of people from all over the country went to him. They had heard what he was doing and wanted to see him. Large crowds of  sick people pushed forward, trying to touch Jesus. They had heard how he had healed so many sick people.
Jesus, please heal my friend (.. name ..) who is sick

Sun Feb 16

Yesterday I joined some asylum seekers for a meeting, then spent much time on a support letter for the Court of Appeal, then attended the usual Sat night prayer time and meal at Notre Dame in Kowloon City, after which I spent some time in the Yau Ma Tei area giving out face masks (provided by kind donors). Two of the asylum seekers at morning meeting are from Kenya; they were domestic helpers until treated badly by employers; now urgently looking for new employers. They speak perfect English. c.f. readings for Sunday 6
Sirach 15-19:
Wisdom makes us happy. Foolishness makes us sad. Humility is the pathway to wisdom. We are free to choose good or evil, wisdom or foolishness. To live a good life is something everyone can try to do. If we have done something wrong, we must ask pardon of the Lord. We must turn our back on wrongdoing, and face towards the Lord. Do not indulge in luxurious living. Too much wine and luxury corrupts the heart. Avoid gossip and slander. Be someone who can keep a secret. The way people dress tells you what work they do. The way people walk also tells a lot about them.
Lord, please help me turn my back on wrongdoing. Help me face towards you

My recording of this reading

Psalm 119: They are happy who follow God's word, those who seek God with all their hearts. How can young people avoid evil? By seeking you and obeying you, Lord. Open my eyes, Lord, that I may understand the beauty of your word. Lord, when I'm worried or in trouble, your word revives me and gives me strength. Lord, keep my eyes from what is false.
Bend my heart to your word and not to love of gain. The word from your mouth means more to me than silver and gold. The unfolding of your word gives light and teaches simple people.

Lord, thank you for your word which gives peace to our hearts

 Recording

1 Corinthians 1.18 - 2.9: The language of the Cross doesn't make sense for some people. But for us it is God's power to save. While the Jews demand miracles and the Greeks require philosophy, here we are preaching a crucified Christ: to the Jews an obstacle they cannot get over, to the pagans madness. During my stay with you, I relied not on philosophy or my own efforts, but only on the power of the Spirit. The wisdom we teach is about things no eye has seen, and no ear has heard, things beyond human understanding - all that God has prepared for those who love him.
Jesus, crucified Lord, please increase my faith in you

 Recording

Matthew 5.13-48: Jesus said to the crowds: You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its taste, it's no use for anything. You are the light of the world. Let the world see your light, your good deeds. When people see you doing good deeds, people will praise God. I have not come to abolish the Jewish religion. I have come to raise it to a higher level of goodness. Your goodness must not just be something superficial. Your goodness must be something from the heart. You must avoid anger and insult, just like you avoid murder. If you have offended someone, say "Sorry". You must avoid lustful looks and thoughts. Looking at someone lustfully is immorality of the heart. Love and pray for people who are unkind to you. This is the way to practise the highest level of goodness.
Jesus,  please help me practise a higher level of goodness

 Recording

Reflection on the above readings:  We like our children to go to a school which has a high standard. We like food and other products produced by restaurants/factories with a high standard of hygiene.
As Christians we are called to aim for a high standard. Jesus hits the nail on the head in today's Gospel: he continually calls us to a higher level of goodness.

Exodus 18: Moses' father-in-law, Jethro, heard about all that God had done for Moses and the Israelites, so he visited Moses in the desert. Jethro saw that Moses was struggling to do so much administration by himself. Jethro suggested that Moses appoint men to help him: leaders of thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens. Moses accepted this advice and appointed judges as Jethro suggested. These judges handled all small issues and referred only difficult cases to Moses.
Dear God, please make us willing to share responsibilities with other people

My recording of this reading

Psalm 127: If the Lord does not build the house, in vain do its builders labor. If the Lord does not watch over the city, in vain does the watchman keep vigil. Success comes not from earlier rising or from going later to rest, but from the Lord's blessing. Success is from the Lord who blesses the womb of his beloved while she sleeps. Truly, children are a gift from the Lord, a blessing, the fruit of the womb.
Lord, many people these days don't want children. Please help such people understand that children are a blessing

Listen

Hebrews 6.11-19: May every one of you persevere in your Christian life. Never give up. Remember how Abraham persevered in following God, despite so many difficulties. Take a firm grip on the hope that is held out to us by God. This hope is an anchor for us, a lifeline going right up to heaven
Jesus, you are my anchor. You are my lifeline

Listen

Mark 3.1-6: Jesus again went to a prayer hall on the Sabbath. In the hall was a man with a withered hand. The religious leaders were watching Jesus to see if he would heal on the Sabbath, hoping for something to use against him. Jesus said to the man with the withered hand "Stand in the middle of the hall".  Then he said to the religious leaders "Is it against the law on the Sabbath to do good?" They remained silent. Grieved that they were so obstinate, Jesus looked angrily round at them, and said to the man "Stretch out your hand". He stretched it out and it was healed. The leaders left and began to plot how to get rid of Jesus.
Jesus, don't let my heart become obstinate

Valentine's Day:
There are so many bad things happening - and they get so much publicity - so it's good to let Valentine's Day remind us that "love makes the world go round" .... only love gives meaning to our lives .... when we do something good/loving we feel good .... when we do something bad/unloving we feel bad. The key to improving things for ourselves or our group or our world is ... more love/compassion/care towards others, especially people in need. As in the old song "What the World Needs Now" - at this simple but beautiful YouTube, with lyrics. And Valentine's Day unique opportunity for Church (let's reclaim St Valentine's Day!)

Now for the bad news:

This will be a cause of concern for HK and Macau Christians: New Beijing boss was responsible for destruction of 2,000 church crosses when he was in Zhejiang province - see final sentence of this article

Temple Street market (where I live) was like a morgue last night ... very few stalls operating, very few customers (because of virus and because of violent protests)

Virus: All HK Masses cancelled for 2 weeks starting tomorrow! (c.f. all churches closed in Macau two weeks ago) *** Schools to remain closed

Yesterday from 9.45 to 5.30 I was at Lo Wu women's prison where inmates and volunteers working round the clock are producing 80,000 masks each day!

Exodus 17: In one place where there was no water the people grumbled against Moses: "Give us water to drink or else we will die." Moses asked God for help and God told Moses to strike a large rock with his staff. When Moses did this, water flowed from the rock. In another place the Israelites were attacked by the Amalekites. Moses prayed while Joshua led the people in battle. As long as Moses kept his arms raised up in prayer, the Israelites were winning. But when Moses let his arms down,
the Amalekites started winning. So Aaron and Hur got Moses to sit on a rock and they supported his hands until sunset.
Joshua and the people then won the battle.

Dear God, please help us understand the power of prayer

Psalm 126: When the Lord delivered Zion from bondage, it seemed like a dream. Then was our mouth filled with laughter, on our lips there were songs. What marvels the Lord worked for us. Indeed we were glad. Those who are sowing in tears will sing when they reap. They go out, full of tears, carrying seed for the sowing. They come back, full of song, carrying their sheaves.
Dear God, please bless all people who are sorrowful as they work

Listen

Hebrews 4.12-16: The word of God is something alive and active. It goes deep into our hearts. In Jesus we have the supreme high priest who is now in the highest heaven. He knows how weak we are. He himself was tempted in every way, but did not sin. Let us be confident in approaching his throne of grace. He will give us grace when we are in need of help.
Jesus, our high priest, help me when I'm weak

Mark 2.23-28: One Sabbath day Jesus and his disciples were walking through a cornfield.  The disciples were hungry. They picked some ears of corn and ate them. Picking corn on the Sabbath was regarded as unlawful by the Pharisees.  So the Pharisees said to Jesus "Your disciples are breaking the Sabbath law". Jesus replied "Don't you remember what King David and his followers once did when they were hungry? They ate the Temple bread which only the priests were allowed to eat. Go and learn the meaning  of these words 'What I want is mercy, not superficial external offerings'. I am Master of the Sabbath."
Jesus, please help me understand that love is more important than law.

Thu Feb 13

I spent most of yesterday and early last night in support of a 73 year old Italian man, Adelchi, against whom the Department of Justice has justly dropped a drug trafficking charge. Such a dropping would normally be followed by a full acquittal and release from detention and return to one's own country. But because the courts are in recess due to the virus, only bail release could be obtained yesterday. Adelchi is now staying at the centre of an NGO until a final court date (hopefully) on Feb 25. One big problem yesterday: Adelchi cannot speak English and I cannot speak Italian. Mama mia!

Exodus 16: As the Israelites traveled through the desert they began to complain about not having enough food. So God rained down bread, manna, from heaven in the form of a coating of dew

For forty years the Israelites ate manna and quails, bread and birds

Hebrews 3.1-13: Focus on Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our religion. He was faithful to the one who appointed him, just like Moses. Take care not to turn away from the living God. Keep encouraging one another, so that sin does not cause you to turn away from God
Jesus, help me stay focused on you

Mark 2.13-17: Jesus went again to the Sea of Galilee. Many people came to him and he taught them there by the sea. Near the sea he saw a tax collector Levi (Matthew) working at the customs house. Jesus said to him "Follow me". He got up and followed him. Levi gave a dinner in his house for Jesus. Sitting with Jesus were some tax collectors and "sinners". In fact Jesus' followers included many tax collectors and "sinners". Some religious leaders asked Jesus' disciples "Why does he eat with tax collectors and 'sinners'?" Jesus himself answered them: "It is not the healthy who need the doctor, but the sick. I did not come to call the virtuous, but sinners."
Jesus, thank you for being a friend of people who are rejected and despised

Exodus 15: The Israelites used this prayer to thank and praise God: "The Lord has covered himself in glory, horse and rider he has thrown into the sea. The Lord is my strength and my song, he is my salvation. This is my God, I praise him. The Lord is his name. Lord, when you blew over the waters, they piled high on two sides. Lord, only you are God, there is no other. Lord, you are our king for ever."
Dear God, you are my strength and my salvation

My recording of this reading

Psalm 124: "If the Lord had not been on our side", this is Israel's song. If the Lord had not been on our side when people rose against us, then would they have swallowed us alive when they were angry with us. Blessed be the Lord who did not let us become a prey for their teeth. Our life, like a bird, has escaped from the snare of the hunter. Indeed the snare has been broken
and we have escaped. Our help is in the name of the Lord who made heaven and earth.

Thank you, Lord, for all the times you have rescued me from trouble

Hebrews 2.14-18The Son did not become an angel. He became a man, so that he could die for us. By his death he took away the power of the devil. He himself experienced temptation. He is able to help us when we are tempted
Jesus, please help me when I am tempted to do something wrong

Mark 2.1-12: After some time Jesus returned to Capernaum. Crowds quickly gathered at the house where he was staying. While he was preaching inside the house, four men carried a paralytic on a stretcher to the front door. They couldn't get in, because of the crowd, so they went up on the roof, took off some of the roof covering, and lowered the stretcher in front of Jesus. Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralytic "Your sins are forgiven". Some religious leaders present in the crowd  thought to themselves "Who does this man think he is? Only God can forgive sins". Jesus knew what they were thinking, so he asked them "Which is easier? To say 'Your sins are forgiven' or 'Get up and walk'? But to show you that I have authority to forgive sins I now say: get up, pick up your stretcher and go home." The man got up, picked up his stretcher and walked out in front of everyone. The crowd said "We have never seen anything like this".
Jesus, please heal my friend.....(name)....who is a paralytic
