Tues March 17 - St Patrick's Day!
From

was named after a HK governor born in Ireland!
How
HK celebrates St Patrick's Day
Virus:
Politicians in some countries who initially did not take the virus
seriously are now learning that you can fool people but you can't fool the
virus.... and ... the speed of change is astonishing. What a difference one
week, make that one day, can make in any part of the world as the virus spreads
***
In
this ABC report, Dr N. Swan says Singapore,
Taiwan and Hong Kong succeeded in controlling the epidemic without closing
schools. ???? In fact HK schools have been closed, because of the virus,
since Lunar New Year (Jan 25)!

My article in today's Ming Pao newspaper has the topic: Arrival health card is a joke. It's on Ming Pao website - click "Australian in HK". Text without recording

Leviticus
16-17: Instructions for the annual Day of Atonement:
Once a year Aaron or his successor must wear special vestments
and enter the sanctuary past the veil.
Then he is to offer two goats to pray for atonement
for the whole community of Israel.
One goat will be sacrificed in the Temple;
the other is to be set free to go out into the desert -
a symbol of the people's sins being carried away. (this story gives us the English word:
"scapegoat")
Dear God, please forgive
us, and help us to forgive others

Psalm
8: How great is your name, O Lord our God,
through all the earth. When I see the heavens, the work of your
hands,
the moon and stars which you have arranged,
then I stop and think:
what are we insignificant humans that you should care about us? Yet you have put us in charge of the world.
Everything is subject to our control.
How great is your name, O Lord
our God, through all the earth

Peter 2.19-25: If you are treated unfairly, put up with it
for the sake of God. Christ suffered for you and left an example
for you to follow.
He had done nothing wrong. He was insulted and tortured,
but did not retaliate. He bore our sins in his own body on the Cross,
so that we might die to sin and live for holiness. Through his wounds you have been healed.
You were like straying sheep,
but now have come back to the shepherd and guardian of your souls
Jesus, please help me put up with difficulties
for your sake
Listen

Mark
10-9: Some people brought their little
children to Jesus.
They hoped Jesus would put his hands on the children and bless them.
Jesus' disciples told the people to go away
and not bother Jesus.
But Jesus said "Don't stop the little children from coming to
me". Then he put his hands on them and blessed them. Jesus also said "Anyone who welcomes one
of these little children in my name, welcomes me. But anyone who causes
scandal to one of these little ones, commits a great
crime".
Jesus, please help all children
to know you from their earliest days.
Please don't let parents prevent children from coming to you.
Please heal children who have been scandalized by adults

Hello from HK where I arrived back yesterday morning after an 8 hour flight from Brisbane. Thank you Jesus for the past 3 weeks in Australia and a safe trip back to HK! On tomorrow's menu I'll put my thoughts about the useless health card which people at HK airport need to fill in on arrival.
If you'd like to forget your own problems and worries and the virus - try
watching The 1968 Last Sermon of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther
King. I saw it yesterday. Powerful, especially the second half. (Google
produced it when I asked for something about the Holy Spirit as Living Water ...
as in yesterday's readings!)

Mark
10.1-12: One day some religious leaders put Jesus to the test by asking him
"Is it against the Law of Moses for a man to divorce his wife?" Jesus replied "God created male and
female, for the two to become united as one body. What God has
united, no one should separate." The religious leaders then asked
"But why did Moses allow divorce?" Jesus replied "Moses allowed divorce
because people were so hard of heart. But divorce was not God's
plan. So I say to you, anyone who walks out on their
partner and marries someone else, is guilty of adultery."
Jesus, please help married
people stay together
Listen
Reflection on the above readings: I once heard the famous U.S. preacher Billy Graham speak about marriage statistics. Maybe his figures need updating, but he said that 1/2 marriages in the US end in divorce. But if a couple goes to church each week, the figure drops to 1/40. And if the couple also pray together each night, the figure drops to 1/400.

Exodus
17: In
one place where there was no water the people grumbled against Moses: "Give
us water to drink or else we will die." Moses
asked God for help and God told Moses to strike a large rock with his staff.
When Moses did this, water flowed from the rock. In another place the Israelites
were attacked by the Amalekites. Moses prayed while Joshua led the people in
battle. As long as Moses kept his arms raised up in prayer, the Israelites were
winning. But when Moses let his arms down, the Amalekites started winning. So
Aaron and Hur got Moses to sit on a rock and they supported his hands until
sunset. Joshua and the people then won the battle.
Dear God, please help us understand the power of
prayer
My
recording of this reading
Psalm
95: Come ring
out our joy to the Lord. Hail the rock who saves us. Let us come before him
giving thanks. With songs let us praise the Lord. A mighty God is the Lord, a
great king above all gods. In his hand are the depths of the earth. The heights
of the mountains are his. To him belongs the sea, for he made it, and the dry
land shaped by his hands. Come in, let us bow and bend low. Let
us kneel before the God who made us. For he is our God and we are
the people who belong to his pasture.
Lord, you are our Creator. Our life comes from
you. We praise and love you, Lord

Romans
5.1-5: By
faith and through Jesus we can live in the friendship of God. We look forward to
heaven and an end to all suffering. In the meantime our suffering teaches us
patience. Patience produces perseverance. Perseverance produces hope. This hope
is not imaginary. It's real, since the
love of God has been poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit who has been
given to us.
Jesus, through your Holy Spirit, please give me
more hope

John
4.1-14: Jesus
visited a Samaritan town. Near a well there, Jesus said to a Samaritan woman
"Give me a drink". He also said to her "If you drink water
from this well, you will get thirsty again. But if you drink the water that I
shall give, you will never be thirsty again. The
water that I shall give will turn into a spring of eternal life inside you".

please give me a drink of your eternal life water - which is your Holy

Leviticus 8-10: Moses followed God's instructions
and ordained Aaron and his sons as priests.
Moses washed them, put special clothing on them,
anointed their heads with chrism
and offered a special animal sacrifice on their behalf.
Then Aaron lifted up his hands towards the people
and blessed them. A flame from the Lord consumed the offering on the altar.
The people shouted for joy and fell on their knees.
But later on when two of Aaron's sons offered unauthorized fire
a fire from the Lord consumed them.
Moses then said:

Virus:
If
Australia follows the example of HK, then Australia might be able to contain and
stop the virus. HK's policy of closing schools, cancelling gatherings,
restricting/quarantining arrivals etc for the past two months has, at least
temporarily, stopped the spread of the virus ... to the extent that public
sports venues were reopened yesterday and public servants (including the courts)
are back at work. The alternative to such preventative measures is to face a
situation like South Korea or Italy or Iran. Prevention is better .... and much,
much easier, than cure. Watch HK

9.14-29: A man brought his son to Jesus and pleaded:

saw Jesus, it threw the boy into convulsions. Jesus asked the father "How long has this
been happening?"
He replied "From childhood .... please help us!" Jesus said "Everything is possible if you
have faith".
The father cried out "Please increase my faith!" Jesus rebuked the evil spirit: "Deaf and
dumb spirit, I command you: come out of him and never enter him again".
The spirit came out, but the boy seemed to
have died. Jesus took him by the hand and helped him up. Jesus' disciples asked "Why were we
unable to expel that spirit?"
Jesus replied "Only prayer can drive out that kind of spirit"
