Tues March 24

Most of my time these days is being spent "at the office" ... catching up on mail, messages, support letters etc to/for/from prisoners .... except for a walk in the afternoon to visit a church and to give out masks and hand washing liquid to poor people. HK is now more open than Australia or many parts of Europe - restaurants/hotels etc are still open. But HK govt, like govts everywhere, is asking people to stay home as much as possible. Problem is that the homes of most people in HK are tiny compared with homes in other countries ... and staying home is like living in a caravan or submarine!

Yesterday I finally got round to doing something I've been meaning to do for a long time: I installed Windows 8.1 on my PC whose Windows 8 kept sending "I've expired" messages!

Leviticus 26-27: God's words through Moses: "If you  keep my commandments I will bless you in every way: you will have rain at the right time, the earth shall give its produce, your land will know peace, you will be fruitful and multiply, I will be in your midst, I will be your God and you shall be my people.
But if you ignore my words and break my commandments you will have no peace, there will be no rain, the earth shall not yield its produce, sickness and pestilence will afflict you, you will be scattered among the nations".

Dear God,  please help us to keep your commandments

My recording of this reading

Psalms 20-21: May the Lord protect and help you, may he give you your heart's desire and fulfil every one of your plans. Some trust in chariots or horses, but we trust in the Lord.
Lord, may our plans and hopes be acceptable to you. Please bless our plans

Listen

1 Peter 4.13-19: If you have a share in the sufferings of Christ, be glad, because this means you will have an extra share of happiness in the life to come. It is a blessing for you when they insult you for being a Christian. It means you have the Spirit of God resting on you. People who experience suffering for God's sake, must trust themselves to the grace of the Creator, and keep on doing good
Jesus, give strength to persecuted Christians

Listen

Mark 11.1-11: Jesus sat on a donkey colt for the trip down the hill from the Mount of Olives into the city of Jerusalem. Big crowds accompanied Jesus down the hill. People spread their clothes on the road as a sign of honor. People cut branches from the trees and waved them singing "Hosanna to the Son of David. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.  Hosanna in the highest!"
Jesus, may you be warmly welcomed by every place and every person in the world

Leviticus 24-25: God's words through Moses: "Every seventh year your land is to have a rest, a sabbath for the Lord. Every fifty years will be a Year of Jubilee: no sowing, no harvesting, a time for freeing slaves".
Dear God, please help us understand and keep your word

My recording of this reading

Psalm 19: (sun + law = the "sun-in-law" psalm)
The heavens proclaim the glory of God, the starry skies are the work of his hands.
The stars can't speak, but they are God's handwriting. The sun is God's love shining on the whole world. The universe is a masterpiece, and so is God's law which shines in our hearts. The precepts of the Lord enlighten our lives each day. The law of the Lord gives joy and wisdom to our hearts. The decrees of the Lord are to be desired more than gold, they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb. But  often we are unaware of our errors. Lord, please protect us from making mistakes.
Lord, may the words of my mouth and the thoughts of my heart  be pleasing to you

Listen

1 Peter 4.3-5: You spent enough time in the past living a careless life, behaving indecently, drinking all the time, having wild parties. Now that you don't do these things anymore, people can't understand why you've changed, and they tell lies about you. They will have to answer for this to him who will judge everyone at the end of their lives
Jesus, rescue young people from wild party life

Listen

Mark 10.46-52: As Jesus was leaving Jericho on his way to Jerusalem, many people followed him along the road. Sitting by the road was a man  who had become blind. His name was Bartimaeus ("son of Timaeus"). When he heard that Jesus was going past, he called out "Son of David, have pity on me". Some people tried to stop him from calling out, but he shouted even more loudly "Son of David, have pity on me". Jesus stopped and said to him "What do you want me to do for you?" He replied "Lord, let me see again". Jesus said to him "Go, your faith has saved you". Immediately his sight returned, and he followed Jesus along the road
Jesus, please heal my blind friend (.. name ..)

Listen

Reflection on the above readings: Jesus did not say to the blind man "sorry, not today" etc. In fact, never once did Jesus refuse a request for healing. In 2020 we can ask the same Jesus for healing .... even healing from the virus

Virus: The Oblate response: Fr Louis Lougen O.M.I., Superior General (.. in fact Eugene de Mazenod not only in 1814 confronted typhoid ... in about 1835, as bishop of Marseilles, he also actively visited people affected by typhoid)

The virus has in weeks done what the Australian Federal Police and state counterparts have fought years to do.  It has smashed drug smuggling supply chains, created debts and friction for organised crime groups and is set to create desperate toilet roll-type demand for users of cocaine and Ice.  ((This no doubt is true for many other places. In HK, the Nigerian overseas "drug mule" supply chain will be hit hard, although HK will still receive supplies of drugs from across the border in China))

c.f. readings for Lent 4

1 Samuel 16: The Lord told Samuel to go to Bethlehem and anoint one of Jesse's sons as king. Samuel anointed Jesse's son David as king. The spirit of the Lord came down on David and stayed with him from that day on.
Dear God, may your Holy Spirit come down on more and more people
My recording of this reading

Psalm 23: The Lord is my shepherd, there is nothing I shall want. Fresh and green are the pastures where he gives me repose. Near restful waters he leads me, to revive my drooping spirit. He guides me along the right path. He is true to his name. If I should walk in the valley of darkness no evil would I fear. You are there with your crook and your staff; with these you give me comfort. You have prepared a banquet for me in the sight of my foes. My head you have anointed with oil. My cup is overflowing. Surely goodness and kindness shall follow me all the days of my life. In the Lord's own house shall I dwell for ever and ever.
Thank you, Lord, for being my good shepherd

 Recording

Ephesians 5.10-20: Try to discover what the Lord wants of you. Have nothing to do with the futile works of darkness. Wake up from your sleep, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you. Be very careful about the sort of life you live. Follow your enlightened mind, not your unruly passions. Avoid drunkenness. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. Sing prayer songs when you are together, and when you're by yourself, keep on singing to the Lord in your heart, always giving thanks to God.
Jesus, make my heart sing right through the day

 Recording

John 9.1-33: Once when Jesus was walking along the road, he saw a man who had been blind from birth. Jesus spat on the ground and made some mud with the spittle. He put the mud on the man's eyes, and said "Go and wash in the Siloam Pool". The blind man went and washed, and came away able to see. When the blind man heard people criticize Jesus, he said "Ever since the world began, it has never been recorded that someone opened the eyes of a man born blind. This man must be from God".
Jesus, please heal my blind friend ....(name)

 Recording

 Reflection on the above readings:
Today's Gospel reminds us of the story of John Newton, a former slave ship captain who in 1829 composed the words of Amazing Grace (with the lines "I was blind, but now I see"). Yesterday as I checked some info about Newton I was deeply saddened when I Googled  "slave trade" and found items like this

Leviticus 21-23: God's words through Moses: "Regard the priests as holy, for they offer holy sacrifice. Keep the sacred festivals:
- every Sabbath
- the Passover and the feast of Unleavened Bread
- the First Sheaf
- the Feast of Weeks
- the first day of the seventh month
- the Day of Atonement
- the Feast of Tabernacles".

Dear God, thank you for special worship days and seasons

My recording of this reading

Psalm 16: Please protect me, Lord, I take refuge in you. You are the only source of all true happiness. I bless you, Lord, who guide and lead me. Even at night you direct my heart. And so my heart rejoices, my soul is glad. My body shall rest in safety now and always. You will show me the path of life, the fullness of joy in your presence, at your right hand, happiness for ever.
Thank you, Lord, for the little joys you give us each day ....and the big joy you've prepared for us in Heaven.

Listen

1 Peter 3.8-11: Be agreeable and sympathetic. Love everyone. Have compassion and be self-effacing. Never pay back one wrong with another, or an angry word with another one. Instead, pay back with a blessing. Anyone who wants to have a happy life must banish malice from his tongue; he must avoid evil, do good and seek peace.
Jesus, when people are  unkind to me, help me to pray in my heart "Lord, please bless them"

Listen

Mark 10.35-45: The brothers James and John were two of Jesus' disciples. One day their mother said to Jesus "When you become king, allow my sons to sit at your right and left". Jesus said to his cousins James and John "Only my Father in heaven can allocate seats on my right and left". The 10 other disciples were angry at James and John for seeking honor.  So Jesus said to them all  "In most places, people in power like to dominate and control others. But this is not to be your way of exercising authority. You must exercise authority by serving others, not dominating them, just as I came not to be served, but to serve, and to give my life as a ransom for the world"
Jesus, please help me want to help and serve other people, not dominate and control them

Psalm 14-15: So many people live and act as if God doesn't exist. Some foolish people even say there is no God. So many people have left the way of justice and truth. So many people follow the way of falsehood. Lord, help us to live as we should.

1 Peter 5.1-4: To those of you who are elders I say: I am an elder myself, a witness to the sufferings of Christ. Be good shepherds of the flock that God has entrusted to you. Never be a dictator over any group that is in your charge, but be an example that the whole flock can follow. When the Chief Shepherd appears, you will be given the crown of unfading glory
Jesus, help pastors and elders be good shepherds

Mark 10.28-30: On behalf of all the disciples, Peter asked Jesus "What about us?  We have left everything to follow you." Jesus replied "You will be leaders in the church on earth. Virus: As long as even one country still has new virus infections, all other countries will at least need to have a compulsory 14 day quarantine on arrival policy .... which means we are in for a long battle, since the virus is only just starting in Africa and South America *** Experts back name "Wuhan virus" & slam wild meat trade in China *** Masses now suspended in Victoria, Australia

Virus means fewer airplanes in the air ... this will greatly reduce global warming

HK's compulsory 14 day quarantine policy for all arrivals will mean a great reduction in drugs-in-body drug mules arriving at HK airport?!

c.f. readings for Feast of St Joseph

2 Samuel 7: After David settled into his palace and the land enjoyed peace, David thought about building a temple for the Lord. Then through the prophet Nathan the Lord told David: "I will establish your dynasty for ever. But it will be your son, not yourself, who will build a temple for me." David praised God: "Who am I, Lord, and what is my House, that you have helped me so much and promised me so much? May my House continue in your presence for ever. May you bless my House forever."
Jesus, Son of David, give peace to our world

My recording of this reading

Psalm 134: I will sing for ever of your love, O Lord; through all ages my mouth will proclaim your truth. Of this I am sure, that your love lasts for ever,  that your truth is firmly established as the heavens. "I have made a covenant with my chosen one;  I have sworn to David my servant: I will establish your dynasty for ever, and set up your throne through all ages".
Jesus, Son of David, may your kingdom of peace come in our troubled world

Recording

Revelation 22.16-20: "I, Jesus, have sent my angel to make these revelations to you for the sake of the churches. I am of David's line, the Root of David, the Bright Star of the Morning". The Spirit and the Bride say: "Come". Let all who want eternal life say: "Come". Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!
Jesus, Son of David, come into our world!

Recording

Matthew 1.18-24: This is how Jesus Christ came to be born. His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph; but before they came to live together she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. Her husband Joseph, being a man of honour and wanting to spare her publicity, decided to divorce her informally. He had made up his mind to do this when the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, 'Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because she has conceived what is in her by the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son and you must name him Jesus, because he is the one who is to save his people from their sins.' When Joseph woke up he did what the angel of the Lord had told him to do.
Jesus, Son of David, save your people from war and strife

Recording

Reflection on the above readings:

Wed March 18

For the past two mornings I've been at the High Court, for 2 cases each morning.... with everyone from judges to defendants wearing masks! And I heard an interesting quote from a prominent barrister re the virus: "There has been an epidemic of incompetency". Matched by the comment of a lawyer: "I'm sick of hearing all this virus talk"!

As doctors continue to push the govt to take stronger action against the virus (... just like HK doctors 2 months ago ...) a teacher in Australia offers this comment to explain another reason why schools are not already closed:
Australian schools not closing down is reflective of a lack of leadership in the education system. Even if the govt hasn't ordered schools to close, schools are absolutely able to close down, by transferring to distance education mode. Unfortunately, educational leaders nowadays do not always have students' interests at heart - they often see their leadership roles in schools as a means to further their own career ambitions. As such, they care less about what's happening "on the ground" than about ivory tower theorists/research.

1 Peter 3.1-7: Wives, honor and respect your husbands. If some husbands are not yet believers, they may find themselves won over to the Lord, without a word spoken, by the goodness of their wives. Wives, do not dress up for show: special hair style, gold bracelets, expensive clothes - all outside stuff. What matters is what's inside: a sweet and gentle disposition - that's what God likes. Husbands, be kind and thoughtful to your wives, respecting them as equals

Mark 10.17-27: A young man asked Jesus "Master, what do I have to do to get to Heaven?" Jesus replied "Keep the commandments: do not kill;  do not commit adultery; honor your father and mother; care for others as much as you care about yourself". The young man said "I have kept all these commandments. What else do I need to do?" Jesus said "If you want to do something really special with your life, go and sell all your possessions, give the money to the poor, then come and follow me as one of my disciples". When the young man heard these words he went away sad, because he was very rich. Jesus then said to his disciples "It is hard for a rich person to get to Heaven".
