Yesterday I was at Tai Lam women's prison from 9am to 5.45pm .... sad to meet several new drug mules from Africa and Thailand .... but hoping the flow of drug mules will be greatly reduced by the virus  - as explained in this article:
How virus is affecting drug trafficking

My article in today's Ming Pao newspaper has the topic: Life in post-Covid-19 Hong Kong. It's on Ming Pao website - click "Australian in HK". Text without recording

Numbers 10: The Israelites made two silver trumpets. When both trumpets sounded, the whole community would go to where Moses was. When only one trumpet sounded, only the leaders would assemble. The trumpets were also used on special feast days, to remind the people to praise God
Dear God, when we hear trumpets being used in an orchestra or band, may their sound remind us of you

My recording of this reading

Psalm 28: To you, O Lord, I call, my rock, hear me. If you do not heed, I shall become like people in the grave. Lord, you are my strength and my shield. In you my heart trusts. Thank you, Lord, for so often hearing my prayer. I will always thank and praise you. You are the strength of your people Israel. Save your people. Be our shepherd and carry us for ever.
Lord, please help people who are in big danger today

Listen

1 John 1.1-2: Something which has existed since the beginning, that we heard, that we saw with our own eyes, that we touched with our hands: the Word, who is life - this is our subject. That life was made visible. We saw it, and we are giving our testimony, telling you of the eternal life which was with the Father and has been made visible to us
Jesus, Word-made-flesh, you are the Way, the Truth and the Life

Listen

Mark 13.1-37: Jesus spoke to his disciples about the future: "On account of my name you will be hated, tortured and killed.
But the Good News of the kingdom will spread to every nation before the end of the world. At the end of the world, the sun and moon will stop shining. Stars will fall from the sky. Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky and all peoples will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds with power and glory. He will send his angels with a loud trumpet to gather good people from all parts of the earth. Therefore you  should live a good life and you will have nothing to fear on your last day"

Jesus, please help me live and grow and die in your love ... and not be afraid of death

Listen

Reflection on the above readings: Numbers mentions 3 uses for a trumpet. Gospel add one more

As I reached the main entrance of Tai Lam women's prison yesterday at 8.55am, there was a wild pig on the roadway not far from where I was standing. I took some photos ....will be on menu in next couple of days (.. the photos, not the pig). As I waited at the prison bus stop for 6pm mini-bus I saw a banner which had the words "What to do if you see a wild pig". One item was: don't take photos of the pig! I took photos of the sign ... also for tomorrow's menu.

Mon March 30

I watched this yesterday while preparing for a prison visit today. It is gripping. This guy was behind the kidnapping of HK booksellers, he infiltrated the protest movement in HK, he was supposed to manipulate the Taiwan elections: 60 Minutes - Chinese spy spills secrets to expose Communist espionage (4.5m views)

The "ranting" style of this report takes away from its message. But the basic message is worthy checking. When I was in Ethiopia in January I learned first hand that the Ethiopian director of WHO would not criticise China and would not push his own country to introduce the quarantine of passengers from China because .... Ethiopia is beholden to China for economic reasons (like Cambodia): Corruption in W.H.O. helped virus spread

Is factory farming to blame for coranvirus? The way meat is produced - and not just in China - contributed to Covid-19. This gives us an opportunity to question our lifestyle choices - because chicken isn't cheap if it costs a million lives - and vote for politicians who hold agribusiness to higher standards of ecological, social and epidemiological sustainability.

Yesterday while packing/preparing for a prison visit today, I really enjoyed this most interesting video: Iran in the Bible. The forgotten story

Numbers 9: Whenever the Israelites pitched camp the Cloud of God's presence covered the Sacred Tent. From nightfall until morning, the Cloud took the appearance of fire. Whenever the Cloud lifted above the Tent, the Israelites broke camp.
Wherever the Cloud stopped, there the Israelites pitched camp. Sometimes the Cloud stayed in one place for one day, sometimes for a month, sometimes a year. However long the Cloud stayed above the Tent the Israelites remained in camp. In this way they pitched camp and broke camp at the Lord's command

The Cloud in Christian tradition is understood to be God the Holy Spirit, so we can pray:
Dear Holy Spirit, please lead me and guide me just as you guided the Israelites through the desert

My recording of this reading

Psalm 27: The Lord is my light and my help, whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life, before whom shall I shrink? Though an army encamp against me, even then would I trust. There is one thing I ask of the Lord, for this I long: to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life. It is your face, O Lord, that I seek. Hide not your face. I am sure I will see your goodness in the land of the living. Hope in the Lord, hold firm and take heart. Hope in the Lord!
Lord, you are my light and my help. I will always praise you

Listen

2 Peter 1.20 - 3.18: We must be careful to understand Scripture according to God's mind. We are not free to make up our own interpretations as we like. In the past there were false prophets. So there will always be false prophets and teachers who twist the truth to suit their own tastes and corrupt behavior. They will have much to answer for when the Day of the Lord comes. Our brother Paul has written to you about this issue. Sometimes his writing is not easy to understand, and is distorted by false teachers. Avoid false teaching. Stand firm in the truth. Go on growing in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
To him be glory, in time and in eternity. Amen

Jesus,  protect me from people who distort the Bible message

Listen

Mark 12.41-44: Jesus sat down in the Temple area and noticed people putting money into a donation box to help the poor. Many rich people put in a lot of money. A poor widow put in two small coins. Jesus said to his disciples "That poor widow has donated more than all the other people, for they put in money they had left over, but she  put in the only money she had"
Jesus, please make me more generous in helping poor people

c.f. readings for Lent 5:

Ezekiel 35-48: Through Ezekiel, God kept calling on the people to turn from their sins and remember their Creator. God said he would bring back Israel's exiles to their homeland. He would give them a new start in life, like a skeleton coming back to life. God said the people would rebuild the Temple in Jerusalem, and religious practice would once again flourish. The people would once again remember God. The people would once again be blessed by the Lord.
Lord, please help nations which have forgotten you to come back to you

My recording of this reading

Psalm 130: Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord. Lord, hear my voice. If you, O Lord, should  record our guilt, Lord, who would survive? But with you is found forgiveness. For this we revere you. My soul is waiting for the Lord. I count on his word. My soul is longing for the Lord more than watchman for the daybreak. With the Lord there is mercy and fullness of redemption. Israel indeed he will redeem from all its iniquity.
Lord, please forgive me for all the bad things I have done

Romans 8.9-13: You are on God's team. God the Father is the manager. Jesus is the captain. The Holy Spirit is the coach, a coach living in your heart. If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead, is living in you, then he who raised Jesus from the dead will help you live a risen life. By the grace of the Holy Spirit you can stop doing bad things.
Holy Spirit of Jesus, Holy Spirit of the Father, fall afresh on me!

John 11.1-44: Lazarus and his sisters Mary and Martha lived in the village of Bethany. When Lazarus became very sick, the sisters sent a message to Jesus "Lord, your dear friend is very sick". By the time  Jesus and his disciples arrived in Bethany,
Lazarus was dead and buried for 4 days. Martha said to Jesus "If you had been here, my brother would not have died". Jesus replied "I am the resurrection and the life. If anyone believes in me, he will have life after death". Jesus said to Mary and Martha "Where have you put him?"  Jesus cried as he went to the tomb. The tomb was a cave with a stone at the entrance. Jesus said "Take the stone away". Then he called out in a loud voice "Lazarus, come out!" The dead man came out, wrapped in burial clothes. Jesus said "Unwrap him and let him go free".

Jesus, you are the Resurrection and the Life. Please give eternal life to my friend (....name...) who died recently

Reflection on the above readings: The topic of death from Covid-19 is on everyone's lips these days. One question we will have to wait till Heaven for an answer: Why can't the virus be stopped by prayer? Maybe this sickness is being used to save the world from an out-of-control lifestyle .... like people who radically change their dangerous lifestyle after they've had a big accident/illness.

Sat March 28

Yesterday morning I spent much time, unsuccessfully, trying to find accommodation for some of the dozens of people in my area who used to spend the night at McDonald's (God bless McDs for their compassion) but have nowhere to sleep because McDs now serves only take-a-ways from 6pm because of virus restrictions.

Numbers 7-8: When Moses went into the Tent of Meeting to speak with God, Moses heard God's voice. Specially dedicated to God were the Levites. They were responsible for the worship ministry in the Tent. They served this ministry from when they were twenty five years old until they were fifty years old
Dear God, please bless all pastors and ministers

My recording of this reading

Psalms 24-26: The Lord's is the earth and all its peoples. It is the Lord who is Creator of the universe. May all hearts open their doors to the Lord. Let him enter, the king of glory. Lord I hope in you all the day long. Forgive my sins and help me walk in your truth.
God my savior, teach me your way of truth

Listen

2 Peter 1.12-18: As long as I am in this passing world, my duty is to keep on reminding you of the truths we hold dear. Writing this letter is one way of making sure that after my departure you will still have a way of recalling the truths we hold dear. These truths are not cleverly invented myths. I myself saw the majesty of our Lord Jesus Christ. He was honored and glorified by God the Father, when the Sublime Glory himself spoke to him and said "This is my Son, the Beloved. He enjoys my favor". I heard this myself, spoken from heaven, when I was with Jesus on the holy mountain
Jesus, Beloved Son, may more and more people accept the truth of your Good News

Listen

Mark 12.38-40: Jesus told the people to beware of religious leaders who like to walk about in long robes, who like to be greeted obsequiously in the market places, who like to take the places of honor at prayer halls and banquets, who steal the property of widows, while making a show of lengthy prayers
Jesus, help religious leaders to be good people

Dear God, please bless everyone in the world

Psalm 23: The Lord is my shepherd, there is nothing I shall want. Fresh and green are the pastures where he gives me repose.
Near restful waters he leads me, to revive my drooping spirit. He guides me along the right path. He is true to his name. If I should walk in the valley of darkness no evil would I fear. You are there with your crook and your staff; with these you give me comfort. You have prepared a banquet for me in the sight of my foes. My head you have anointed with oil. My cup is overflowing. Surely goodness and kindness shall follow me all the days of my life. In the Lord's own house shall I dwell for ever and ever.

Thank you, Lord, for being my good shepherd

2 Peter 1.1-11: From Simon Peter, servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, to all who have faith through our God and Saviour Jesus Christ. May you have more and more grace and peace as you come to know our Lord more and more. By his divine power, he has given us all we need for life and faith. He has called us to share his divine nature in his eternal kingdom. So we must do our best to live lives of goodness, understanding, self-control, patience, a love for prayer, kindness and love
Dear Jesus, may I see you more clearly, love you more dearly, follow you more nearly, day by day

Mark 12.28-30: In Jerusalem a religious leader asked Jesus "Which is the most important commandment?" Jesus replied "You must love the Lord your God with all your heart. Numbers 1-5: A census was taken of all the men aged twenty years and above. The twelve tribes were told to pitch their tents all around the Sacred Tent site. Each time they moved to a new place and pitched their tents, they would do so in the place allocated to each tribe.

Psalm 22: (Many things in this psalm happened to Jesus when he was put to death. This psalm prophesizes Jesus' death)
My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? I call to you for help, but day and night you give no reply.
I am a worm and not a man. Everyone who sees me makes fun of me. They taunt  me: "He trusted in the Lord, why doesn't the Lord help him?" Like water I am poured out, my bones no longer connected. My throat is parched, my tongue sticks to my jaws. Many evil people attack me. They make holes in my hands and my feet. They await my death. They divide my clothing among them, they throw a dice for my robe. Yet I know Lord, that  you are good and holy. I know how you heard the cries of our ancestors and you helped them. It was you who took me from the womb and entrusted me to my mother's breast. To you I was committed from my birth,
from my mother's womb you have been my God. Lord, I trust in you even now. I trust you will not scorn my prayer. Even now I praise you as my Creator. May all the nations know and worship you.

Lord, please help people who are in big trouble right now, especially people whose lives are in danger

Recording

1 Peter 5.5-14: To everyone else I say: do what the elders tell you. Wrap yourselves in humility to be servants of each other.
God refuses the proud and favors the humble. Bow down before the power of God, and he will raise you up. Unload all your worries on to him, since he is looking after you. Be calm, but careful, because your enemy the Devil is prowling round like a roaring lion, looking for someone to eat. Stand up to him, strong in faith. Peace to all who are in Christ

Jesus, please protect me from Satan

Mark 11.15-19: When Jesus arrived in Jerusalem, he went to the Temple. In the Temple there were money changers and people selling pigeons. Jesus tipped over their tables and drove them out of the Temple. He said to them "My house is a house of prayer for all the peoples of the world, but you have turned it into a place for robbery"
Jesus, protect  all places of prayer from corruption

Isaiah 7: A foreign king and his army attacked Jerusalem. The king of Judah and his people were full of fear. God told Isaiah to say to the king of Judah: "Keep calm, have no fear. You will not be defeated. The Lord himself gives you a sign of his protection: a maiden is with child and will give birth to a son whom she will call God-with-us."
Lord,  please help me understand how you are God-with-me every day

My recording of this reading

Psalm 40: You do not ask for sacrifice and offerings, but an open ear. You do not ask for holocaust and victim. Instead, here am I. In the scroll of the book it stands written that I should do your will. My God, I delight in your law in the depth of my heart. Your justice I have proclaimed in the great assembly. My lips I have not sealed, you know it, O Lord. I have not hidden your justice in my heart, but declared your faithful help. I have not hidden your love and your truth from the great assembly.
Here I am, Lord. I come to do your will

Luke 1.26-38 (a) In the sixth month of Elizabeth's pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to the town of Nazareth in Galilee, to a virgin named Mary who was betrothed to a man named Joseph. The angel said to her "Mary, Rejoice! You have been greatly blessed by God. You are to conceive and have a son whom you must name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of God". Mary said to the angel, "How can this happen since I am a virgin?"

Luke 1.26-38 (b) The angel replied "The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will specially bless you. Know this too: your cousin Elizabeth has, in her old age, conceived a son, and is now in her sixth  month". "I am the handmaid of the Lord", said Mary, "let what you have said, be done for me". And the angel left her.
