Yesterday afternoon I was at the High Court for the case of a local man on a drug trafficking charge .... case adjourned. After which I visited him in the holding centre of the High Court. Then I went to the Kenyan Consulate on behalf of a prisoner from Kenya ... then to the Admiralty office of the Chinese University of Hong Kong to register 6 prisoners for courses. Grateful to be able to move around freely ... no lockdown in HK

Readings are from Simple Bible

Numbers 25: For a while the Israelites settled in the area of Shittim. In that place the Israelite men gave themselves over to debauchery with the women of Midian. The Israelites joined these women in sacrifices to local idols. God therefore sent a plague to punish the Israelites and thousands of people died. God commanded Moses to execute Israelites who had taken part in sacrifices to local idols. Phinehas the priest, son of Eleazar, son of Aaron showed his loyalty and zeal by personally executing one of the main offenders, at a time when most people didn't care what was happening
Dear God, please help us to care about what goes on around us and what is happening in the world

My recording of this reading

Psalms 47-48: All peoples, clap your hands, cry to God with shouts of joy. For the Lord, our Creator, we must love and honor,
great king over all the earth. Especially in his holy city is the Lord worthy to be praised. Praise is fitting in Mount Sion, our earth's most sacred site. O God, as we pray in your temple, our hearts meditate on your love. May peoples and rulers everywhere acknowledge and love you as Creator of the Universe

Let all the peoples praise you, Lord. Let all the peoples praise you

Revelation 1.4-8: From John, to the seven churches of Asia province: grace and peace to you from him who is, who was, and who is to come, from the seven spirits at his throne, and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the First-born from the dead,
the Ruler of the kings of the earth. Jesus Christ loves us and has washed away our sins with his blood, and made us a line of kings and priests to serve his God and Father. It is he who will come on the clouds. Everyone, in every part of the world, will see him. All hearts will be moved by his coming. "I am the beginning and the end", says the Lord God. "I am the originator and goal of all things"

Jesus, please help more and more people know who you are

Luke 3.10-14:
People asked John the Baptist how they should reform their lives. He replied: "If anyone has extra clothing, share with people who have none. If anyone has plenty to eat, share with people who have nothing". Tax collectors asked John what they should do. He replied "Don't cheat anyone". Soldiers asked him "What about us? What must we do?" He replied "No bullying. No extortion. Be content with your pay".
Jesus, what about me? What should I do?
Listen

Reflection on the above readings: Because circumstances keep on changing (... Covid-19 being a dramatic example ...) so we need to keep on asking the Lord "What should I do?"  Maybe the Lord wants us to something special (in our family, in our neighbourhood, in our city) during Covid-19 ... rather than sitting around doing nothing.

About a year or so ago, the police just happened to arrest prominent protesters right after a very sensitive election ...they waited until day or so after election was held ... "No coincidence" said Department of Justice. Last Saturday, 15 prominent protesters were arrested a few days after Beijing's HK office "beat the drum" about cracking down on protest .... again "No coincidence" said DoJ ... "police action just happened to be ready that day" (to take action re protests in August last year!) HK had/has one of the best police forces in the world, but the DoJ's misuse of the police is destroying people's respect for the force

Numbers 23-24: When Balaam came to the king of Moab, the king again tried to get Balaam to curse the Israelites. But Balaam followed God's words and said: "How can I curse people that God does not curse? These people are specially blessed by God.
How beautiful are your tents, O Jacob. How lovely are your dwellings, O Israel. From you will come a mighty one who will reign over countless peoples. A star from Jacob will be leader".

Dear God, please bless the Jewish people with peace and love

My recording of this reading

Psalm 46: (c.f. famous hymn by Martin Luther "A Mighty Fortress is our God",  and also the hymn "Be Still and Know that I am God"): God is for us a refuge and strength, in time of distress he is a helper close at hand. Therefore we shall not fear even though the earth should rock, even though the mountains fall into the sea. The Lord of hosts is with us. The God of Jacob is our stronghold. Come and consider the works of the Lord and always remember his words: "Be still and know that I am God". Lord, help us to be more aware of your presence, especially when we are in trouble

Jude: From Jude, servant of Jesus Christ and brother of James, to those who are dear to God the Father and kept safe, wishing you mercy and peace and love. I write with urgency to appeal to you: stand up for the faith that has been entrusted to us. Some false teachers have infiltrated our ranks. They reject the teaching of our Master and Lord, Jesus Christ. They say "anything goes" in the area of morality. Such teaching, such people, must be opposed. Be kind to such people, but with great caution. To God who saves us through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory and all honor, now and forever
Jesus, please protect your church from false teachers

Luke 3.1-6: In the 15th year of the Roman Emperor Tiberius Caesar, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judaea, Herod was ruler of Galilee and during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, God's message entered the heart of John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. John went through the whole Jordan River area proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. This had been foretold by the prophet Isaiah when he said "A voice cries in the wilderness: Prepare a way for the Lord"
Jesus, help us prepare your way, like John

c.f. readings for Easter 2

Acts 2.37-47: The crowd was deeply moved by Peter's words, and asked "What should we do?" Peter replied "You must repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then you too will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit". That day about 3,000 people were baptized. These remained faithful to the teaching of the apostles, to a life of sharing and caring, to the Breaking of Bread, and to prayer. Many miracles were worked by the apostles, and this made a deep impression on everyone. Each day the Lord added new members to their group.
Jesus, please help me remain faithful to the Christian way of life
My recording of this reading

Psalm 118: Give thanks to the Lord for he is good. His love has no end. Let the sons of Israel say: "His love has no end." Let those who honor the Lord say: "His love has no end." It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in humans. It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes. I was falling, falling, falling, but the Lord was my helper. The Lord is my strength and my song. He is my saviour. The Lord's right hand has triumphed. His right hand has raised me up. I shall not die, I shall live and recount all his deeds. The stone which the builders rejected has become the corner stone. This is the work of the Lord, a marvel in our eyes. This day was made by the Lord. We rejoice and are glad.
Lord, we give thanks to you, for you are good.  Your love has no end

1 Peter 1.3-9: Blessed be God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. In his great mercy, he has made us his children. He has prepared a place in heaven for us to live with him forever. This is a cause of great joy for you, even though life in this world has many trials. You did not see Jesus, yet you love him, and you believe in him. Faith gives you confidence to look forward to the salvation of your souls.
Jesus, I have never seen you with my physical eyes, but I love you and believe in you

John 20.21-29: That same Sunday evening, the doors were locked in the room where the disciples had gathered, for fear of the religious leaders. But Jesus appeared and stood before them, saying "Peace be with you". He showed them his hands and his side and said "As the Father sent me, so I am sending you". Then he breathed on them, saying "Receive the Holy Spirit". Thomas, one of the 12 apostles, was not there that night. When the other disciples said they had seen the Lord, he replied "Unless I see and touch his wounded body, I refuse to believe". Eight days later, the group was again in the same house, with the doors locked. This time Thomas was with them. Jesus again appeared and stood before them saying "Peace be with you". Then he said to Thomas "Put your hand into my side. Doubt no longer, but believe". Thomas replied "My Lord and my God!" Jesus said "You believe because you can see me. Blessed are those who have not seen me and yet believe".
Jesus, my Lord and my God, I believe in you. Help me live and grow and die in your friendship

Sat April 18

A few days ago I was contacted by a lady who works for an NGO which helps the poor. Turns out she was a student at Notre Dame O.M.I. College several decades ago. Yesterday at 4pm she and a colleague of hers joined me for a visit to the poor area of YMT, starting with the Ping On building where MercyHK has been renting rooms ... and where a most generous restaurant provides free meals each day for the poor. Then after a visit to nearby Temple Street park where we met a number of homeless people, we mixed with (and gave out masks to) the hundred or more poor people lining up for the bi-monthly O.M.I. rice box service. Two unexpected visitors also were there, two colleagues from another organisation which helps the poor ... and one of them used to be a student at the O.M.I. Primary School! Then Notre Dame College supervisor Fr Slawek O.M.I. came with his team to give out the rice boxes. So many Oblate connections! Oblate founder St Eugene de Mazenod would have been smiling as he looked down from Heaven.

Update about MercyHK's on-going project to help homeless people in YMT-Jordan area (Covid-19 on top of the protests has caused a big increase in the number of homeless people in HK ... society needs to do more to help them)

Numbers 21-22: As the Israelites continued their journey, a number of kings did battle with them. One of these was Og, king of Bashan. God said to Moses: "Do not be afraid of him, for I have given him into your power". Israel then easily defeated Og and occupied his land. The king of Moab also wanted to attack the Israelites, but before attacking, he consulted Balaam son of Beor
who was a type of prophet and could see the future. Several times the king asked Balaam to curse the Israelites, but each time he blessed them, because this is what God told him to do: "You are not to curse this people, for they are blessed". The king then summoned Balaam to his presence. Balaam began his journey to the king, travelling on a donkey. God sent an angel with a sword to block Balaam's way. The donkey could see the angel, so she left the road to make a detour. Balaam hit her and made her return to the road. On the road the donkey again saw the angel and just lay down on the road. Balaam was very angry and hit her with a stick. Then God made the donkey speak: "Why did you hit me? Haven't I always been faithful to you?" God now opened Balaam's eyes and he saw the angel with a sword. Balaam realized that the donkey had saved his life. The angel then told Balaam to continue his journey but to say to the king only what God said to say.

Psalms 42-45:
Like a deer that longs for running streams, so my soul is longing for you, my God. My soul is thirsting for you, the God of my life. I think of you all the time, here in my land of exile. People make fun of us here in exile. They taunt us saying "Where is your God?" Yet no matter what happens we will hope in you, for you are our saviour and our God. No matter where we are or what happens to us, our hearts will long for you, like a bride longing for her groom.
Lord, no matter what happens, may I always hope in you

Mark 16.9-20: After he rose from the dead, Jesus appeared first to Mary of Magdala, from whom he had cast out 7 devils. Next  he appeared to two of his disciples while they were on a journey. Then he appeared to the 11 apostles. He said to them "Go everywhere in the world. Proclaim the Good News to all creation. Anyone who believes and is baptized, will be saved.
Anyone who refuses to believe, will be condemned. These are the signs that will be associated with believers: in my name they will cast out devils; they will have the gift of tongues; they will pick up snakes in their hands; they will be unharmed if they drink poison; they will lay their hands on the sick, who will be healed". And so, the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up to heaven, while they, going out, preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming their message by the miracles that accompanied the message

Lord Jesus, may more and more people all over the world believe in you

Numbers 21: In order to avoid the land of Edom, the Israelites headed towards the coastline. But the people again criticized God and Moses. So God sent snakes among the people and many people died. The people then said to Moses "We have sinned; please pray for us to save us". Moses prayed for them, and God heard his prayer. God told Moses to make a bronze snake and put it on a pole. Anyone bitten by a snake could then look at the bronze snake and live

2 John: In our life of truth and love, we have grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father. I write not to give you any new commandment, but the one we were given at the beginning: let us love one another; let us live a life of love. Keep to what Jesus taught. John 21.1-14: Jesus also appeared to the disciples at the Sea of Galilee, when Peter, John and 5 other disciples were fishing. They had spent all night in their boat, but had caught nothing. In the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, though the disciples did not recognize him. He called out "Lower your net on the right side of the boat". Immediately the net filled with fish. John realized that the man on the shore was Jesus. John said to Peter "It is the Lord", and they returned to the shore, which was only about 100 meters away. The net had 153 big fish, but did not break. Jesus had prepared some bread. He also had some fish cooking on a charcoal fire. He said "Come and have breakfast"
Jesus, Risen Lord, without you, no fish. With you, 153 fish. Please help me be more aware of your presence in my life

Thu April 16

Yesterday I was at Tai Lam women's prison from 9am to 6pm .... with my final visit being to the mother & babies section of the prison hospital .... where I met with 6 or was it 7 mothers and their 7 or was it 8 children ... one mother has 2 children .... in a group together. They are a great group .... supporting and encouraging each other.

At one stage at the prison I found myself in a lift with about 20 women - one guard and about 19 prisoners. Someone asked me if I was afraid, to which I replied with the old adage "I'm afraid of no man and very few women"

Numbers 20: The Israelites arrived at Kadesh in the desert of Zin. They had no water, and complained bitterly to Moses and Aaron. Moses and Aaron pleaded with God for help. God told Moses to hit a rock with a branch and in this way, order the rock to give water. Water did in fact flow when Moses hit the rock, but through lack of faith, Moses hit it twice. So God said to Moses and Aaron: "Because you did not fully trust me, therefore you will not lead the people  to the promised land". When the Israelites moved on from Kadesh, they asked the Edomites for permission to go through their land. But the Edomites refused this request. Later, on Mount Hor, Aaron died  and was succeeded as High Priest by his son Eleazar

Luke 24.36-49: The disciples were still talking about what had happened when suddenly Jesus himself stood among them. At first they were terrified and thought they were seeing a ghost. But he said "Look at my hands and feet. Yes, it is I indeed. Touch me and see for yourselves. A ghost has no flesh and bones as you can see I have". Their fear turned to joy but they still couldn't believe what they were seeing. So he asked them for something to eat, and they gave him some grilled fish which he ate in front of them. Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, and he said "So you see how it is written that the Christ would suffer, and on the third day rise from the dead. And that in his name repentance for the forgiveness of sins would be preached to all the nations. Soon I will send down to you what the Father promised (the Holy Spirit). Stay in Jerusalem until you are clothed with this power from on high"

Luke 24.13-35: That same day, two of Jesus' disciples were on their way from Jerusalem to the village of Emmaus, about 7 km from Jerusalem. As they talked about all that had happened, Jesus himself joined them as they walked along. But they did not recognize him. When Jesus asked them what they were talking about, they said "About Jesus of Nazareth,  and how our leaders had him crucified. And how some women in our group went to Jesus' tomb and were told by angels that he was alive". Jesus then explained the Scripture passages which predicted his suffering and resurrection. Jesus joined the two men for an evening meal. During the meal, he blessed  some bread and gave it to them. They then recognized him. But he immediately vanished from their sight. They said to each other "Did not our hearts burn within us as he talked to us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us?" Straight away they returned to Jerusalem where the eleven apostles said to them "Yes, it is true. The Lord has risen". Then they told their story of what had happened on the road, and how they had  recognized Jesus at the breaking of bread
Jesus, please make my heart burn within me as I read the Bible

Reflection on the above readings: One of the two disciples in the Gospel was Cleopas, whose wife Mary was at the foot of the Cross when Jesus died. An ancient tradition says that Cleopas was a brother of St Joseph! (which makes him Jesus' uncle!)
