Tues May 5

Last Saturday morning when I was overwhelmed by more than 100 W/App messages in 12 hours, I asked Jesus to help me find someone to help me look after the Temple Street stall project which had attracted so many kind offers of help. Less that one hour later I received a message from a dear friend who has been visiting prisoners for many years ... asking if I could help find a job for a 22 year old guy whom she highly recommended. How to you spell "PROVIDENCE"?! That night I met the young man, with the lady who recommended him. And yesterday he started work - supervising the stall project (which is about to grow in a few days with the addition of two more stalls employing more homeless people... thanks to the enormous level of support the project has received). So, if anyone has enquiries about offering items etc for the stall, please phone or W/App Michael Lau - +852 92811545. Welcome Michael!

This sign continues on my phone .... and I was horrified yesterday to find I had missed a large number of messages from last week! Now I am being more careful and today will try to process unprocessed messages from ... last Friday! Total number of messages over the past 4 days is approaching 300!

Deuteronomy 8: Moses continued his speech to the people: "Remember how the Lord your God led you for 40 years in the wilderness, to humble you, to test you, to know your inmost heart - whether you would keep his commandments or not. He humbled you, he fed you with manna, to make you understand that we do not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God. Learn from this that the Lord your God was training you as a man trains his child. Keep the commandments of the Lord your God. Follow his ways and reverence him. When you become prosperous in the land that God is giving you, do not become proud and say your own efforts have brought you success. Take care and do not forget the Lord your God.
Dear Lord, don't let me ever forget all you have done for me

My recording of this reading

Psalm 78: Listen, everyone, to my teaching. I will recount the lessons of our history. The things our parents have told us, we will not hide from our children, but will pass them on to the next generation. We want the next generation to know all that the Lord has done for us in the past. May the next generation in turn pass on this knowledge to their own children, so that they too will put their hope in God and never forget all that God has done for us. May future generations not be like our ancestors who so often were unfaithful to God. Even though our ancestors had seen God part the sea, even though they had seen him provide food and water for them in the desert, still they went on sinning. Yet he who is full of compassion forgave and spared them. He remembered they were only weak humans. Eventually he brought them to the promised land and gave a home to each of Israel's tribes. But still they sinned by building mountain shrines and serving idols. Then God raised up David to be their leader.  God called him from looking after sheep to be the shepherd of his people.
Lord, help us not to forget all you have done for us

Revelation 5.1-10: I saw a sealed scroll that no one could open. Then I saw a Lamb, which seemed to have been sacrificed. The Lamb took the scroll, and the 24 elders sang a new song: "You are worthy to take the scroll and break its seals because you were sacrificed, and by your blood you ransomed us for God out of every race, language, people and nation".
Jesus,  Lamb of God in heaven. We praise you Lord

Luke 5.27-32: As Jesus walked along, he noticed a tax collector sitting by the customs house. The collector's name was Levi (Matthew). Jesus said to him "Follow me".  Leaving everything, he got up and went with Jesus. In Jesus' honor Levi held a banquet in his house. Many  tax collectors and social outcasts were present. The religious leaders complained "Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and outcasts?" Jesus replied "It is not those who are well who need the doctor, but the sick. I have come to call sinners, not the virtuous, to repentance"
Jesus, thank you for befriending people who were looked down on. Please help me do likewise

Reflection on the above readings: Deuteronomy and Psalm 78 have the same message: pass on the Message of God's Love to the next generation!

Our stall takings last night were not that great because very few people attended the market, but when another seller asked me how we went and I somewhat embarrassingly told her, she said "that's much more than most other stalls!

HK Chinese Catholic Media report about MercyHK helping homeless people and here

Over the past four days I have answered around 200 W/App messages, but I still have more than another 100 to go. Please be patient. I will eventually reply to all messages. I have been using Google translate for messages in Chinese! It has been very moving to experience the concern so many people have for the homeless. And I feel like I now have another 200+ special friends in HK! God bless everyone!

Today is the 101st anniversary of the May 4 Movement which saw China's emerging leaders turn to Marxism because China was treated so shamefully at the Treaty of Marseilles. See my 2016 article Are HK students radicalised? (.. but now in 2020, because of the "deafness" of the HK govt, some students - a tiny minority - have, sadly, become radicalised)

Deuteronomy 7: Moses continued his speech to the people: "You are a people consecrated to the Lord your God. It is you that the Lord our God has chosen to be his very own people out of all the peoples on the earth. But know this: if the Lord set his heart on you and chose you, it was not because you outnumbered other peoples. In fact you were the least of all peoples. It was for love of you and to keep his promise to our ancestors that the Lord chose you. Listen then to these ordinances, be true to them and observe them, and in return the Lord your God will be true to you. He will love you and bless you and increase your numbers. He will bless the fruit of your body and the produce of your soil, your corn, your wine, your oil, the issue of your cattle, the young of your flock. No man or woman among will shall be barren, no male or female of your beasts infertile. The Lord will keep all sickness far from you. Be loyal then to the Lord and have nothing to do with the religious practices of the people you will conquer."
Dear God, please help us to love you as we should

Psalms 73-77: Sometimes when I see how bad people prosper, I wonder what's the use in trying to be good? But then I realize that everyone someday has to pay the bill for any evil they have bought in the world. Sometimes when I see our world and religion in ruins, I wonder why has God abandoned us? Then I remember that God has promised to break the power of the wicked. He has promised to give strength to good people. So may all people honor the Lord our God and judge. May the Lord give us his loving help.
Lord, you are goodness itself. Please help us to be good and to trust you always

Revelation 4.1-11: In my vision I saw a door open in heaven. The same voice as before said to me "Come up here. I will show you what is to come in the future". I saw God in all his glory, being worshipped by the angels who sang: "Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord God, the Almighty". And I saw 24 elders around the throne. They were praising God saying "You are our Lord and our God. You are worthy of glory and honor and power because you are the Creator of the universe".
"Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God, Almighty. Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee"

Luke 5.17-26: God's power was on display when Jesus healed people. People came from far and near to hear him teach, and to ask for healing. One day some people carried  a paralyzed man through a crowd to Jesus. The man was on a stretcher. Jesus knew that these people believed he could help them, so he said to the paralyzed man "My friend, your sins are forgiven". Some religious leaders in the crowd were thinking to themselves that Jesus was wrong to say he could forgive sins. So Jesus said to the leaders "Which is easier: to say 'Your sins are forgiven', or to say 'Get up and walk'?" Then to prove that he had authority to forgive sins, he said to the paralyzed man "Get up, pick up your bed and go home". The man got up, picked up his stretcher and went home. The crowd praised God for what they had seen.
Jesus, please give me more faith in your power to forgive, your power to heal

Sun May 3

Two days ago at the opening of the MercyHK 2nd hand stall in Temple Street Market, so many kind people donated clothing that there was too much for our two stall trolleys ... therefore many items needed to be stored in my nearby home overnight (see final photo here). In fact yesterday I gave some items to a charity group which will send the items next week to a group in the Philippines which distributes clothing to slum dwellers.

Yesterday was Day Two for the 2nd hand stall. Went really well Thank Goodness. Many thanks to all helpers, advisers, donors and patrons!

Also two days ago, thanks to so much help from so many people, I rented another room at the Ping On building, this time a room for three men. That makes 10 rooms for 22 homeless people.

For the 3rd day in a row W/App has been displaying the 99+ image. Each day I try to reply to 30-40 messages (nearly all offering kind help for the street stall) but I can't seem to get that 99+ image to go away! Please be patient and I will try to answer all messages.

c.f. readings for Easter 4

Acts 2.37-47: The crowd was deeply moved by Peter's words, and asked "What should we do?" Peter replied "You must repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then you too will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit". That day about 3,000 people were baptized. These remained faithful to the teaching of the apostles, to a life of sharing and caring, to the Breaking of Bread, and to prayer. Many miracles were worked by the apostles, and this made a deep impression on everyone. Each day the Lord added new members to their group.
Jesus, please help me remain faithful to the Christian way of life

My recording of this reading

Psalm 23: The Lord is my shepherd, there is nothing I shall want. Fresh and green are the pastures where he gives me repose. Near restful waters he leads me, to revive my drooping spirit. He guides me along the right path. He is true to his name. If I should walk in the valley of darkness no evil would I fear. You are there with your crook and your staff; with these you give me comfort. You have prepared a banquet for me in the sight of my foes. My head you have anointed with oil. My cup is overflowing. Surely goodness and kindness shall follow me all the days of my life. In the Lord's own house shall I dwell for ever and ever.
Thank you, Lord, for being my good shepherd

Recording

1 Peter 2.19-25: If you are treated unfairly, put up with it for the sake of God. Christ suffered for you and left an example for you to follow. He had done nothing wrong. He was insulted and tortured, but did not retaliate. He bore our sins in his own body on the Cross, so that we might die to sin and live for holiness. Through his wounds you have been healed. You were like straying sheep, but now have come back to the shepherd and guardian of your souls
Jesus, please help me put up with difficulties for your sake

 Recording

John 10.1-10: Jesus said to the religious leaders "I am the gate of the sheepfold. If anyone enters the sheepfold by some other means than the gate, that person is a thief. The person who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the flock. The sheep hear his voice as he calls each one by name and leads them out of the sheepfold. When he has brought them out, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I have come so that people may have life, not just now but for ever".
Jesus, Good Shepherd, please help more and more people hear your voice and follow you

-------------------------------

Hour of Love HK radio program 8.30 pm HK time tonight - with items about HK prison inmates

-------------------------------

  To go with today's Gospel:

A shepherd was herding his flock in a remote pasture when suddenly a brand-new BMW advanced out of a dust cloud towards him. The driver, a young man in a Broni suit, Gucci shoes, Ray Ban sunglasses and YSL tie, leans out the window and asks the shepherd, "If I tell you exactly how many sheep you have in your flock, will you give me one?" The shepherd looks at the man, obviously a yuppie, then looks at his peacefully grazing flock and calmly answers, "Sure, Why not?"

The yuppie parks his car, whips out his Dell notebook computer, connects it to his AT&T cell phone. He surfs to a NASA page on the internet, where he calls up a GPS satellite navigation system to get an exact fix on his location which he then feeds to another NASA satellite that scans the area in an ultra-high-resolution photo. The young man then opens the digital photo in Adobe Photoshop and exports it to an image processing facility in Hamburg, Germany. Within seconds, he receives an email on his Palm Pilot that the image has been processed and the data stored. He then accesses an MS-SQL database through an ODBC connected Excel spreadsheet with hundreds of complex formulas.

He uploads all of this data via an email on his Blackberry and, after a few minutes, receives a response. Finally, he prints out a full-color, 150-page report on his hi- tech, miniaturized HP LaserJet printer and finally turns to the shepherd and says, "You have exactly 1,586 sheep."

"That's right. Well, I guess you can take one of my sheep," says the honest shepherd. He watches the young man select one of the animals and looks on amused as the young man stuffs it into the trunk of his car. Then the shepherd says to the young man, "Hey, if I can tell you exactly what your business is, will you give me back my sheep?"

The young man thinks about it for a second and then says, "Okay, Why not?"
"You're a consultant." says the shepherd. "Wow! That's correct," says the yuppie, "but how did you guess that?"
"No guessing required." answered the savvy shepherd, "You showed up here even though nobody called you; you want to get paid for an answer I already knew; to a question I never asked; and you don't know anything about my business.......now give me back my dog."

Deuteronomy 6: Moses continued his speech to the people: "Listen Israel. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your strength. Let these words I urge on you today be written on your heart. You shall repeat them to your children and say them when you are resting in your house or going for a walk, when you are lying down and when you get up. You shall fasten them on your hand as a sign and on your forehead as a circlet. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates."
Dear Lord, please help us to love you with all our hearts

My recording of this reading

Psalm 72: O Lord, please bless the king, that he might serve your people with justice. May the mountains bring forth peace for the people and the hills, justice. The kings of Sheba and Seba bring him gifts. All nations will serve him. He will save the poor when they cry for help and the needy who are helpless. He will have pity on the weak and save the lives of the poor. May every tribe be blessed in him. May every nation bless his name.
May all the nations know and love you, Lord

Revelation 3.14-17: He gave me this message for the church in Laodicea: "You are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were one or the other. But since you are lukewarm, you are cutting yourself off from me. You are rich in this word's goods, but you are spiritually poor. Listen to this message and repent"
Jesus, please don't ever let me become a lukewarm Christian

Listen

Luke 5.12-16: In one town that Jesus went to, a leper fell on his face and pleaded "Sir, if you want to, you can heal me". Jesus stretched out  his hand, touched him, and said "Of course I want to!  Be healed!" And the leprosy left him at once. Jesus' reputation continued to grow.  Large crowds gathered to hear him speak and to have their sicknesses cured. But afterwards Jesus would always go to a quiet place where he could be alone and pray.
Jesus, please help me understand that you want sick people to be healed

Listen

Reflection on the above readings: Never once did Jesus say "No" to a request for healing. His policy was, and is, "Of course I want to heal you"

Fri May 1

Feast of St Joseph the Worker
- & Labour Day - an ideal date for the blessing and opening our MercyHK's stall in Temple Street Market tonight! Yesterday, together with a team of volunteers and 3 formerly homeless people now staying at the Ping On building, I spent much time in the setting up of the stall. God bless everyone involved in the operation and all kind donors of items for sale.

No change in the W/App situation of my phone. Even though I have processed maybe 70 messages since two nights ago, there are still more than a hundred to go. Messages from kind HK people offering to help the Temple Street stall and our homeless group. God bless all the message senders & all kind donors of help for the homeless.

c.f. readings for St Joseph the Worker (For International Labor Day)

Genesis 1-2: God made the world. God made  the sun, the moon and the stars....the whole universe. God said "Let there be light" and there was light. God made the earth with all its plants and trees and animals and fish and birds. God made the first people.....the first man and first woman. God made them in his own image and said to them "Be fruitful, multiply and fill the earth." God saw all that he had made, and all of it was good, very good.
Dear God, thank you for making such a beautiful world!

My recording of this reading

Psalm 90: O Lord you have been our refuge from one generation to the next. Before the earth or the world existed, you are God, without beginning or end. For you, a thousand years are like yesterday, come and gone so quickly. We humans have a short life, our life is over like a sigh. Our span is 70 years, or 80 for those who are strong. Make us know the shortness of our life, that we may gain wisdom of heart. In the morning, fill us with your love. Give success to the work of our hands.
Lord, help us realize the shortness of our life,  that we may live our lives more wisely

Recording

Colossians 3.18 - 4.1: Wives and husbands, understand and support each other. Children, be obedient to your parents. Parents, treat your children fairly or else they will rebel. Slaves, be obedient and respectful to your owners. Offer up your work to the Lord, our Heavenly Owner. Owners, be just and fair to your slaves. Remember your Heavenly Owner.
Jesus,  help families to live together in harmony

 Recording

Matthew 13.53-58: One day Jesus went to Nazareth, his home town. In the prayer hall there he taught the local people. But the local people would not accept him.  They said "Where did he get such wisdom and miraculous power? He is just a carpenter's son. His mother is that woman called Mary. His brothers are James, Joseph, Simon and Jude. His sisters are here, too.  He's nobody special." Jesus said to them "A prophet is despised only in his own country and his own house". And he did not work many miracles there because of their lack of faith.
Jesus, please give me more faith in you .... and don't let me reject people

 Recording

Reflection on the above readings: On this International Workers/Labor Day, may the example of the carpenter whom Jesus called "father" help us to offer up our work as a prayer to the Lord ... like a woman who used to pray "Jesus, I don't really like washing and ironing, but I offer it up as a prayer asking that you would keep my family safe". Let us also pray for the 50% of the world's workers who might lose their jobs because of Covid-19 (... including 30 million out of work in US)

Dear God, please bless all Buddhists

This appeared on my phone early last night and is unlikely to go away for a few days! Nearly 200 Whats/App messages from kind people in HK offering items for the MercyHK stall due to open in Temple Street Market tomorrow night! God bless them all! A humbling thought I had: this shows the extraordinary readiness and potential of ordinary good people to "get involved" if they have a chance. Maybe in the Church they don't have the opportunities they could have. Now that my strength fails, do not abandon me. Now that I am old and grey-headed, may I continue to trust in you and proclaim your help. To you I will sing with the harp. Luke 5.1-11: One day when Jesus was standing near the Lake of Gennesaret, with people pressing round him listening to the word of God, he saw two fishing boats near the bank. He got into one boat, it belonged to Simon Peter, and taught people from the boat, away from the shore a little distance. When he'd finished speaking he said to Simon "Go out further to deep water and use your nets for a catch of fish". Simon replied "Master, we worked hard all night and caught nothing, but if you say so I'll lower the nets". They soon caught so many fish that the nets began to tear. They called to their friends in the second boat to come and help. Both boats were soon filled with fish. Peter fell at Jesus' knees and said "Leave me, Lord, I am a sinful man", for he was overcome by the catch they had made, as were James and John who were his partners. But Jesus said to Simon "Don't be afraid. From now on, you will be fishers of men".  Simon and his friends then left everything to follow Jesus
Jesus,  bless and protect  all "fishers of men"

Wed April 29

Yesterday morning at the High Court I attended the sentencing of two young Malaysians for drug trafficking to HK .... heroin in their shoes. Both were given 3 months discount for help to my anti-drug campaign. From the HC I went to a nearby restaurant for lunch with a kind lawyer who is trying to help a number of special prisoners. Then to Chinese University office to enrol some prisoners. Then to two book stores to get text books for prisoners. No lockdown in HK!

The Book Blog:   4 readings + recordings
Comments welcome here
Readings are from Simple Bible

Deuteronomy 2-4: Moses continued his talk to the Israelites: "God has been with us these 40 years, watching over us and providing for us. God gave us many victories and continually told us not to be afraid of any enemies. So now, Israel, do not forget God's goodness and help and laws. Do not forget the things your eyes have seen. Make sure to tell these things to your children's children. God has brought you out of Egypt to be his special people. If you seek God with all your heart and soul
you will find him. Understand this today, therefore, and take it to heart: The Lord is God indeed, in heaven above as on earth below, he and no other. Keep his laws and commandments as I give them to you today, so that you and your children may prosper and live long in the land that the Lord your God gives you forever
."
Lord, please help me to seek you with all my heart

My recording of this reading

Psalms 69-70: Save me, O God, for the waters have risen to my neck. I am sinking fast and can't keep afloat much longer. So many people hate me without cause. I have no more strength to resist them. May my situation not cause anyone to lose faith in you. May people realize that it is for your sake that I am taunted. Taunts have broken my heart. No one shows me any compassion. For food they give me poison. In my thirst they give me vinegar to drink. Lord, do not hide your face from your servant. Answer quickly for I am in distress. You are my rescuer, my help, O God. O Lord, do not delay to help me.
O God come to our assistance. Lord make haste to help us

Listen

Revelation 3.1-3: He gave me this message for the church in Sardis: "I know all about you. You are a shining red apple on the outside, but inside you are rotten. Wake up, revive your faith and love. Remember the eagerness you showed when you first heard the Good News. Listen to this message and repent"
Jesus, don't ever let me become a rotten apple

Listen

Luke 4.38-44: Jesus went to the home of Simon Peter. Simon's mother-in-law was sick in bed with a fever. Jesus was asked to help her. He bent over her, rebuked the fever and it left her. She immediately got up and served her guests. After the Sabbath finished at sunset, everyone who had sick friends brought them to Jesus. Laying his hands on each of them, he healed them. The next morning Jesus got up early and went to a lonely place to pray.  People found him and asked him not to leave the area. But he replied "I must proclaim the Good News of the kingdom of God to other towns too, because that is what I was sent to do"
Jesus, heal my friend ... (name)... who is sick

Tues April 28

Yesterday I paid my second visit to Dignity Kitchen (a wonderful social enterprise empowering handicapped people) at 618 Shanghai Street in Mong Kok - for lunch with 3 members of the No More Mules Team. We 4 guests were privileged to meet a blind man named Ming ... one of whose jobs is to make deliveries for DK, using Google Location to guide him!

On the way back to Jordan with 2 of the NMM team, I did some shopping for the MercyHK stall due to open this Friday night in Temple Street market. Shopping included the ordering of this banner to be displayed in the stall:

Is India heading for a crisis?

My article in today's Ming Pao newspaper has the topic: What is a "quisling"? It's on Ming Pao website - click "Australian in HK". Text without recording

Readings are from Simple Bible

Deuteronomy 1: After wandering in the desert for 40 years, the Israelites reached the land of Canaan. Moses then assembled the people and recalled all that had happened over the past 40 years: "When God first told us to take this land, I said to you: Do not be afraid. God goes ahead of you and will be fighting on your side, as he did in Egypt. I also said how God carried you, as a man carries his child, all along the road you travelled to this place. But you did not trust God and God closed the door to Canaan for 40 years, causing us to wander in the desert until now."
Dear God, please help me to trust you a bit more

My recording of this reading

Psalms 66-68:
O God, be gracious and bless us and let your face shine its light upon us. Let all the peoples praise you, O God.
Let all the peoples praise you. O sing to the Lord, make music to his name. Rejoice in the Lord, exult at his presence. Father of the orphan, defender of the widow, God provides a shelter for the homeless. God gives his people strength.

May all the peoples of the earth know you and praise you, O God

Listen

Revelation 2.18-22: He gave me this message for the church in Thyatira: "I know how charitable you are. I see your faith and devotion, and your courage in suffering. But some of you are being misled by a false teacher. You are imitating her bad behavior. Listen to this message and repent"
Jesus, please don't let me imitate bad behavior

Listen

Luke 4.31-37: Jesus went to Capernaum, a town in Galilee. On the Sabbath day he taught in the local prayer hall. In the hall there was a man possessed by a devil which shouted "What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are: the Holy One of God". Jesus said sharply "Be quiet! Come out of him". And the devil left the man without hurting him. People in the hall said "He gives orders to unclean spirits and they obey him". Jesus' reputation continued to spread through the district
Jesus, please protect my family from evil

Listen

Reflection on the above readings: False teachers do exist (Revelation). Evil spirits do exist (Gospel). May the Lord protect us from both!
