This week I am attending the annual O.M.I. retreat which, because of Covid-19, is a day-time instead of a live-in activity ... with talks on Zoom by Cardinal Orlie Quevedo O.M.I. in the Philippines
Last night at 10.30pm, W/App said I still have 114 unanswered
messages. I will keep trying to answer 30-40 each day.

My article in today's Ming Pao newspaper has the topic: UK, US, Brazil: how leaders failed Covid-19 test . It's on Ming Pao website - click "Australian in HK". Text without recording

Deuteronomy
16-18: Moses' teaching:
"Remember the special feasts and days that you must observe.
Appoint judges for the people. Do not pervert the law.
You must be fair, you must not take bribes.
No bribes, no corruption.
Do not practise divination, soothsaying.
No one may be an augur or sorcerer.
Do not use charms, do not consult ghosts or spirits.
Instead, be entirely faithful to the Lord your God."
Dear
Lord, please help people avoid
astrology and fortune tellers
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
86: Turn your ear, O Lord, and give answer
for I am poor and needy.
O Lord, you are good and forgiving,
full of love to all who call to you. All the nations shall come to adore you
and glorify your name, O Lord,
you who alone are God. Show me, Lord, your way, and guide my heart
so that I may walk in your truth. I will praise you, Lord my God, with all my
heart
for your love to me has been great. O give your strength to your servant
and save your handmaid's son.
Dear Lord, thank you for
all your
love

Revelation
13.2-12:
The dragon gave authority and power to
a beast
with seven heads.
For a time, the beast waged war on the saints. Then I saw a second
beast. It was a servant of
the first beast, and made people everywhere worship the first beast.
Father, Son and Holy Spirit - may people
worship you,
and not worship Satan and the two beasts
Listen

Luke
6.41-45:
In his teaching, Jesus said "Why do you
notice the splinter in someone else's eye, but don't notice the plank in
your own eye? Deal with your own faults before you start correcting
other people. A good tree does not produce bad
fruit. A bad
tree does not produce good fruit. The fruit tells you what sort of tree it
came from. So with people: their words and actions tell
you what their heart is like - good or bad.
Jesus, please help me be a good person,
producing good fruit

Reflection
on the above readings: Wherever we see goodness -
e.g. someone helping an elderly person - we see goodness, make that Goodness
since wherever love is present, God is there.

strange if the all-clear is given for this coming Sunday, since a typhoon might

Psalm
85: I will hear what the Lord God has to say,
a voice that speaks of peace.
Peace for his people and his friends
and those who turn to him in their hearts. His help is near for those who love him
and his glory will dwell in our land.
Mercy and faithfulness have met.

Revelation
12.7-14: Then war broke out in
heaven. Michael and his
angels fought the dragon and his angels. Michael
won. Satan and his followers were driven out of heaven. The

All
three 2nd hand stalls arranged by MercyHK at Temple Street Market were operating
4pm to 9pm yesterday - thank you Jesus! And thank you Eddie Chan for all your
support and guidance! Stalls are located in front of a shop which is at 187
Temple Street. But I once again apologise to people waiting for replies to W/App
and email messages ... I had very little time to work on messages yesterday.
Last night (10.40pm) my mobile said I still have 171 W/App messages unanswered. And
urgent support letters for prisoners going to court also need to be done. All in

c.f. readings for Easter 5
Acts
6.1-7: About
this time as the number of disciples kept growing, the twelve apostles decided
to give other men the job of daily food distribution. The apostles said to the
whole group of believers "It is not right for us to neglect the
service of the word. Therefore you should choose seven men of good reputation,
filled with the Holy Spirit and with wisdom. We give them the food
distribution job, so that we can devote ourselves to prayer and the service of
the word". The whole assembly approved of this idea. They
chose seven men and presented them to the apostles who prayed over them with the
laying on of hands. The word of the Lord continued to spread. Even a
large number of priests became believers.
Jesus, please bless
all deacons. Fill them with the courage and wisdom of the first seven deacons
My
recording of this reading
Psalm 33: Ring
out your joy to the Lord, all good people, for praise is fitting for loyal
hearts. For the Lord loves justice and right; he fills the earth with his love.
By his word the heavens were made, he spoke and the universe came into being.
They are happy, whose God is the Lord, he
is the source of all true joy. May your love be upon us, O Lord, since we
place all our trust in you.
Lord,
we trust in your precious love

Peter 2.4-9: Jesus
is Mr Livingstone, the living stone rejected by men, but chosen by God.
Stay close to him, so that you too may be living stones in the spiritual house
of God's church. You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a consecrated
nation, a people set apart to sing the praises of God who called you out of
darkness into his wonderful light.
Jesus, you are the
foundation stone of my life. May I build my life on your teaching, your values,
your example

John
13.37 - 14.6: At
the meal, Peter said to Jesus "I will lay down my life for you". Jesus
replied "Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times. To all
of you I say, there are many rooms in my Father's house. I am going now to
prepare a place for you. I am the Way,
the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through
me".

truth and life

Reflection on the above readings:
Jesus
is the
Way: following him is the best way to travel on our journey in this
world.
Jesus is the
Truth: if we want to know if something or someone is true/truthful,
we just need to remember Jesus' words and behaviour about the issue involved.
Jesus is the
Life: if we follow him, we will follow the Culture of Life, not the
culture of death

Yesterday morning I was at the High Court for the case of an
African woman facing a drug trafficking charge. Then I went to the nearby
Chinese University office to enroll 6 prisoners for long-distance courses. Then
to the Catholic Centre in Central for a time of prayer, especially remembering
my dear mother for her birthday (109 ... in Heaven). Then back to the High Court
for the case of an Indonesian woman applying to the High Court for a hearing by
the Court of Appeal. Then to C.S.D. headquarters in Wanchai for a most
encouraging meeting between senior CSD staff and members of Voice for Prisoners.
Then to Temple Street Market for a meeting with stall workers and Eddie Chan,
Chairman of St. Peter's Revival Association who is working closely with MercyHK
for the Temple Street project. Not many opportunities yesterday to answer some
of the 161 (10.50pm) W/App messages not yet answered.

Deuteronomy 11: Moses continued his
speech to the people:
"You must love the Lord your God.
Remember this day, how it was you who heard these words,
not your children.
It is your eyes that have seen the great works God has done.
Keep the Lord's commandments,
so that you may have strength to conquer the land God is giving you.
That land is a land of hills and valleys watered by rain from heaven.
If you love the Lord your God with all your heart
the Lord will give your land its rain in due season,
autumn and spring,
so that you may harvest your corn, your wine and your oil.
But if you forget the Lord your God and worship other gods,
then the heavens will be closed and produce no rain.
See, I set before you today a blessing and a
curse:
a blessing if you obey the commandments of the Lord our God;
a curse if you disobey the commandments of the Lord our God."

You should set them free from the hand of the wicked". O God, please protect your people from

Luke
6.12-16: Jesus went to the hills to pray. He spent a
whole night praying.
In the morning he called all his disciples together. He chose 12 of them
and called them "apostles": Peter and his brother Andrew, James, John,
Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Simon, Judas
son of James - and Judas Iscariot who became a traitor. Jesus and the 12 came down from the hill to a
place of level ground.
Gathered there were his many disciples and a large crowd of people from
all over the country who had come to hear him and to be healed of
diseases. People in the crowd tried to touch Jesus
because power came out of him that cured everyone

Deuteronomy 10: Moses continued his

"And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God ask of you?
Only this: to love and honor the Lord, to follow all his ways,
to serve him with all your heart and all your soul,
to keep the commandments and laws of the Lord
that for your good I set before you today.
Circumcise your heart and be obstinate no longer.
The Lord your God is great and good.
He it is you must praise, he is your God.

They shouted: "Victory to our God,
who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb". One of the elders told me who these people

"These are the people who have been through the great persecution.

Luke 6.6-11: On another Sabbath Jesus visited a prayer hall.
A man with a withered hand was in the prayer hall. Some religious leaders were watching to see if
Jesus would heal the man (since no work was allowed on the Sabbath, and
they regarded healing as work). Jesus knew what they were thinking, so
he said to the man with the withered hand "Stand up! Come out into
the middle of the hall".
He came out and stood there. Jesus then asked the leaders
"Is it against the law on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil; to
save life or to destroy it?" Then he said to the man with the withered hand
"Stretch out your hand". He stretched it out. It was healed. The leaders were very
angry. They
left the prayer hall

Wed May 6
So many good people in this world! Last Saturday morning I received
an email from the welfare office at Lo Wu women's prison asking me to collect
and pay for
contact lens for an inmate (a repeat job every 7 months). Same morning I phoned the
only store in HK where lenses can be collected (a store in Mei Foo which has a
special arrangement with CSD) asking if lenses could be collected by midday
yesterday since I was committed to going to LW prison yesterday afternoon with a French-speaking
O.M.I. so he could visit a West African woman who speaks only French.
Store owner phoned around midday yesterday to say lenses were ready for
collection. Then when I collected the lenses he revealed that on Monday
afternoon a courier had delivered the lenses to an incorrect address, so the
owner used his own car yesterday morning for a two hour return trip to collect the lenses so they
could be delivered to the prison yesterday afternoon. Jesus,
please bless that good owner!
The

.... but yesterday I was not able to process many messages because of visits to
the prison and a hospital.

How long will this sorrow keep going? Do not hold the guilt of our ancestors against

If their guilt is somehow influencing our situation now

riches, wisdom, strength, honor, glory and blessing". I heard all living things in creation -
angels, people, animals - crying out: "To the One sitting on the
throne and to the Lamb, be all praise, honor, glory and power for ever and
ever"
"Thou are worthy, Thou art worthy, Thou
are worthy O Lord,
to receive glory, glory and honor, glory and honor and power"

Luke
6.1-5: One Sabbath day Jesus and his disciples were walking through a
cornfield. The disciples were hungry. They picked some ears of corn
and ate them. Picking corn on the Sabbath was regarded as unlawful by the
Pharisees.
So the Pharisees said to Jesus "Your disciples are
breaking the Sabbath law". Jesus replied "Don't you remember what King David and his
followers once did when they were hungry? They ate the Temple bread which
only the priests were allowed to eat. I am Master of the Sabbath"
Jesus, please help me understand that love is more important than law

Reflection on the above readings: At times of great trial (.. Covid-19 ...) today's reading from Revelation gives us hope that after the trials of this life, there's something that will make us forget all about this world's trials .... just like we have forgotten our first visit to a dentist.

Paddy was driving
down the street in a sweat because he had an important meeting and couldn't find
a parking place. Looking up to heaven he said, "Lord take pity on me. If
you find me a parking place I will go to Mass every Sunday for the rest of me
life and give up me Irish Whiskey". Miraculously, a parking place appeared.
Paddy looked up again and said, "Never mind, I found one."
