Tues May 26

Yesterday afternoon a kind local Baptist pastor came to our MercyHK stalls in Temple Street Market  ... donating items for the stalls. I enjoyed meeting him and showing him around the Ping On Building where MercyHK is renting 14 rooms for 33 homeless people. Also had a drink with him at nearby McDonald's! During the afternoon while at the stalls I also received a donation from a lady who is not a Christian but who read about the work of MercyHK for the poor and prisoners. God bless the pastor and the lady!

My article in today's Ming Pao newspaper has the topic: Covid-19: Leaders and doctors. It's on Ming Pao website - click "Australian in HK". Text without recording

To prepare for Pentecost (May 31)  let's reflect on the Holy Spirit each day this week:
The
seal
is a symbol close to that of anointing. "The Father has set his seal" on Christ and also seals us in him. Because this seal indicates the indelible effect of the anointing with the Holy Spirit in the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Orders, the image of the seal (sphragis) has been used in some theological traditions to express the indelible "character" imprinted by these three unrepeatable sacraments.
CCC 698

In this week before Pentecost let's often pray each day:
Come Holy Spirit, fall afresh on our world!

Readings are from Simple Bible

Joshua 4: After the Israelites crossed the Jordan River, Joshua selected 12 men, one from each tribe, and told them to get 12 stones from the middle of the Jordan. The 12 stones were set up at Gilgal, east of Jericho, as a reminder of how God had helped the Israelites cross the river. When children in the future asked  "What do these stones mean?" parents were to answer: "The waters of the Jordan separated and stopped flowing when the Lord's Sacred Chest entered the river. These 12 stones are a permanent reminder of this." As soon as the Israelites had finished crossing the Jordan, its waters immediately started flowing again.
Dear Lord, please don't let me ever forget the many times you have helped me cross "Jordan" rivers

My recording of this reading

Psalm 98: Sing a new song to the Lord for he has worked wonders. His right hand has brought salvation. The Lord has made known his salvation. He has shown his justice to the nations. He has remembered his truth and love for the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. Shout to the Lord all the earth, ring out your joy. Sing psalms to the Lord with the harp, with the sound of music. Let the sea, the world and all peoples acclaim the King, the Lord. Let the rivers clap their hands and the hills ring out their joy at the presence of the Lord, for he comes to rule the earth. He will rule the world with justice and the peoples with fairness.
Lord, may all peoples in all countries know your love and goodness

Acts 1.1-5: Dear Friend of God, in my first book (the Gospel of Luke) I wrote about everything Jesus did until the day he was taken up to heaven. For 40 days after his death, he appeared to his apostles many times, and taught them about the kingdom of God. He told them to stay in Jerusalem and wait for what the Father had promised: "You will soon be baptized with the Holy Spirit"
Jesus, please baptize me with the Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit, increase your influence in my life

Luke 9.10-17: Once after Jesus had been healing and teaching all afternoon,  his disciples said to him "It's getting late and the people need to go and eat". Jesus answered "They don't need to go. You feed them". The disciples replied "We have only 5 loaves and 2 fish". Jesus got the people to sit on the grass. There were about 20,000 of them. Then he blessed the loaves and fish. He handed the loaves and fish to his disciples. His disciples gave them to the crowd. Everyone had plenty to eat. They even had 12 baskets of leftovers.
Jesus, please make leaders do more to help the starving people of the world

Reflection on the above readings: This week before Pentecost encourages to try to deepen our understanding of the words "be baptized with the Holy Spirit"

Yesterday morning I attended a meeting with Eddie Chan (chairman St Peter's Association) and about 10 kind volunteers for the MercyHK project in Temple Street Market to help homeless people. Then a lunch meeting with two kind priests who support the project ... with a visit to some of the rooms in the Ping On Building being rented for homeless people. Then much time at the stalls ... with so many kind visitors/supporters. God bless everyone I met yesterday! (And: our 3 stalls had their best ever day: A - $882; B - $1,055; C - 879. Deo Gratias!)

To prepare for Pentecost (May 31), let's reflect on the Holy Spirit each day this week:
Cloud
 and light
.
These two images occur together in the manifestations of the Holy Spirit. In the theophanies of the Old Testament, the cloud, now obscure, now luminous, reveals the living and saving God, while veiling the transcendence of his glory - with Moses on Mount Sinai, at the tent of meeting, and during the wandering in the desert, and with Solomon at the dedication of the Temple. In the Holy Spirit, Christ fulfills these figures. The Spirit comes upon the Virgin Mary and "overshadows" her, so that she might conceive and give birth to Jesus. On the mountain of Transfiguration, the Spirit in the "cloud came and overshadowed" Jesus, Moses and Elijah, Peter, James and John, and "a voice came out of the cloud, saying, 'This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to him!' Finally, the cloud took Jesus out of the sight of the disciples. (CCC 697)

Joshua 3: Instructed by the Lord, Joshua told the people to go to the bank of the Jordan River. He told the priests carrying the Sacred Chest to stand in the river on the edge of the water. As soon as the feet of the priests touched the water, the river stopped flowing. The people then went across the dry river bed towards Jericho.
Dear God, please help me to cross rivers of difficulty, doubt, conflict etc

My recording of this reading

Psalm 97: The Lord is king, let earth rejoice, the many coastlands be glad. Cloud and darkness are his robes. His throne is justice and goodness. The skies proclaim his goodness. All peoples see his glory. Let those who serve idols be ashamed. Let all creation worship the Creator. Light shines forth for good people and joy for the upright of heart. Rejoice in the Lord, all good people. Give glory to his holy name.
Lord, you indeed are God of the universe

Revelation 22.16-20: "I, Jesus, have sent my angel to make these revelations to you for the sake of the churches. I am of David's line, the Root of David, the Bright Star of the Morning". The Spirit and the Bride say: "Come". Let all who want eternal life say: "Come". Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!
Come Lord Jesus! Come into my heart! Come into our world!

Luke 9.1-6: Jesus called the 12 apostles together. He gave them power and authority to cast out devils and to heal sick people.
He sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. So they set out and went from village to village proclaiming the Good News and healing sick people

The Ascension of Jesus

Yesterday morning 6 adults, 2 small children and a baby attended a meeting in my home, discussing the topic of drug trafficking to and in Hong Kong. A most encouraging get together! Not sure if the baby should be counted as a number 9 to cause us to exceed the "maximum of 8 people" rule.

c.f. Feast of the Ascension

Acts 1.6-11: On the day he was taken up to heaven, Jesus said to his apostles "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you. Then you will be my witnesses in every part of the world". As he said this, he was lifted up while they watched. A cloud took him from their sight. Then two angels appeared to them and said "Jesus who has been taken up from you, will come back some day in the same way as you have seen him leave".
Jesus, help me be your witness by the way I think and speak and live

My recording of this reading

Psalms 47-48: All peoples, clap your hands, cry to God with shouts of joy. For the Lord, our Creator, we must love and honor, great king over all the earth. Especially in his holy city is the Lord worthy to be praised. Praise is fitting in Mount Sion, our earth's most sacred site. O God, as we pray in your temple, our hearts meditate on your love. May peoples and rulers everywhere acknowledge and love you as Creator of the Universe
Let all the peoples praise you,  Lord. Let all the peoples praise you

Ephesians 1.16-18: I never fail to remember you in my prayers and to thank God for you. May the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, give you more and more wisdom and knowledge to see ever more clearly his great love for you. May he enlighten your mind to hope for the glorious life he has prepared for us in heaven
Father, Son and Holy Spirit, may I see you more clearly, love you more dearly, follow you more nearly, day by day

Matthew 28.16-20: The 11 apostles went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had arranged to meet them. When they saw him they fell down before him in worship. Jesus said to them "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all the nations. Baptize them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Teach them to understand and live according to my words. And know that I am with you always, yes, to the end of time".
Jesus, "God-with-us", please help us live our lives according to your teaching ....and thank you, Matthew, for this beautiful Gospel Report

Reflection on the above readings: God the Son became a baby in Mary's womb when the Holy Spirit "overshadowed" Mary .... "shadow" ... cloud. Jesus went back to Heaven "when a cloud took him from their sight". Not Cathay Pacific or Qantas ... Jesus travelled by Holy Spirit Airways!

Joshua 2: Joshua sent two men as spies to explore the Jericho area. In Jericho they went to the house of Rahab the prostitute.
The king of Jericho was told about this and he sent men to capture the two Israelites. But Rahab hid the men and told the king that they had already gone. Rahab said to the men in their hiding place on her roof: "I know that the Lord has given you this land. My people are afraid of you. We have heard how the Lord dried up the sea for your crossing out of Egypt. We have heard how you defeated the 2 kings Sihon and Og. Since I have shown you kindness I now ask you to show kindness to my family and spare their lives when you attack this city."
The men agreed and told Rahab to tie a scarlet cord to her window so the Israelites would know her family were inside. Rahab helped the men go down from the window by a rope. The men stayed in the nearby hills for 3 days until it was safe to leave. The men returned to Joshua and told how the people of Jericho were already trembling at the thought of an Israelite attack.
Lord, please bless all women and girls caught up in prostitution

Psalm 96: O sing a new song to the Lord. Sing to the Lord, all the earth. O sing to the Lord, bless his name. Proclaim his help day by day. Tell among the nations his glory, and his wonders among all the peoples. It was the Lord who made the heavens.
Give the Lord, you families of peoples, give the Lord glory and honor. Bring an offering and enter his temple. Worship the Lord in his sacred place. Let the heavens rejoice and earth be glad. Let the sea and all within it thunder praise. Let the land and all it bears rejoice, all the trees of the forest shout for joy. Everyone and everything, give the Lord glory and honor.

Lord, you are our Creator. We love and praise you

Revelation 22.1-5: Then an angel showed me the River of Life, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb, flowing crystal-clear through the middle of the city. Here God's servants will worship him. They will see him face to face, and his name will be written on their foreheads. It will never be night again. They will not need lamplight or sunlight, because the Lord God will be shining on them
Jesus, may your name be written on my forehead

Luke 8.40-56: A prayer hall official came to Jesus and urgently asked him to go to his house, where his 12 year old daughter was dying. As Jesus and his friends were following the official to his home, a woman who had a hemorrhage for 12 years came up behind Jesus and touched his clothing.  Her bleeding stopped at that moment. Jesus knew what had happened  and said to her
"My daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace".
Before  Jesus arrived at the official's house, a messenger arrived and said to the official "Your daughter is dead. Do not trouble the Master any more". Jesus heard these words and said to the official "Do not be afraid. Have faith, and she will be ok". At the house Jesus allowed only Peter, James, John and the girl's parents to go with him inside.
To the mourners Jesus said "Stop crying. She is not dead, but asleep".  They laughed at him, since they knew she was dead. Jesus took the little girl by the hand and called to her "Child, get up".  Her spirit returned and she got up at once
Jesus, please increase my faith in your power to heal sick people
and raise the dead

Joshua 1: God said to Joshua: "I will be with you, as I was with Moses. I will not leave you or abandon you. Be strong and stand firm and be careful to keep all the Law which my servant Moses laid on you. Never swerve from this to right or left, and then you will be happy in all you do. Have the book of this Law always on your lips. Meditate on it day and night, so that you may carefully keep everything that is written in it. Be fearless, be confident, for wherever you go I the Lord your God am with you." Then Joshua said to the people: "Get ready, for in 3 days you will cross the Jordan River and take possession of the land which God is giving to you."
Dear God, thank you for the courage and confidence that you give us

My recording of this reading

Psalm 95: Come ring out our joy to the Lord. Hail the rock who saves us. Let us come before him giving thanks. With songs let us praise the Lord. A mighty God is the Lord, a great king above all gods. In his hand are the depths of the earth. The heights of the mountains are his. To him belongs the sea, for he made it, and the dry land shaped by his hands. Come in, let us bow and bend low. Let us kneel before the God who made us. For he is our God and we are the people who belong to his pasture.
Lord, you are our Creator. Our life comes from you. We praise and love you, Lord

Revelation 21.10-23: I saw the Holy City, the New Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven. It had God's glory, and glittered like a precious diamond. There was no temple in the city, since the Lord God and the Lamb were themselves the temple. The city did not need sun or  moon for light, since it was lit by the radiant glory of God and of the Lamb
Jesus, Light of the world, Light of Heaven, we adore you, Lord!

Luke 8.22-25: Jesus and his disciples got into a boat to cross the lake. Jesus was so tired that he went to sleep in the boat. Then a sudden storm caused big waves to lash the boat. Jesus' friends woke him up  and said "Master,  we are sinking". Jesus  ordered the wind and sea to be calm. Straight away the wind and sea were calm. The disciples said to each other "Who is this? Even the wind and sea obey him."
Jesus, please calm the storms in my life

Thu May 21

On this day in 1861, in Marseilles, a French bishop died at the age of 78. He had been born into an aristocratic family which was forced to flee from the French Revolution. His family went to Italy as refugees. His parents had an unhappy marriage and eventually divorced. In Italy the young Eugene de Mazenod had an overpowering experience of the love of Jesus on the Cross. Eugene became a priest and dedicated himself to serving the poorest parts of French society such as prisoners and domestic servants. To further his work he joined with other priests to form a new congregation in the Church. The group came to be known as the Oblates of Mary Immaculate. Today the Oblates have around 4,000 members working for the poor in most countries of the world. Saint Eugene de Mazenod, pray for us! And ... a special letter for today from O.M.I. Superior General Fr Louis Lougen - here

Yesterday I attended a Court of Appeal case from 10am to 1pm. In the afternoon I spent a couple of hours checking most of the 14 rooms now being rented at the Ping On building for 33 homeless people. I spent part of the evening at our 3 stalls in Temple Street Market .... which have had several good days/evenings lately ... and are now being helped by a growing number of kind volunteers.

Deuteronomy 33-34Before Moses died, he blessed the twelve tribes of Israel. Moses then went up Mount Nebo, opposite Jericho, where the Lord showed him the whole land that the Israelites would possess. Moses was buried in the land of Moab.
After the people mourned Moses for 30 days, Joshua son of Nun was filled with the spirit of wisdom, since Moses had laid his hands on him. From that time there has never been a prophet like Moses, the man who knew the Lord face to face.

Dear God, thank you for the life of Moses. May civic and church leaders be more like him, filled with love for you and for the people

Luke 8.19-21: Jesus' mother and his brothers came looking for him. They could not get to him because of the crowd. Jesus was told "Your mother and brothers want to see you". Jesus replied "My mother and brothers are people who hear the word of God and put it into practice"
Jesus, please help me put your word into practice in my daily life

Deuteronomy 32:  The Song of Moses: Listen, O heavens, and I will speak; let the earth hear the words on my lips. May my teaching fall like the rain, my speech descend like the dew, like rain drops on the young green, like showers falling on the grass. For I shall praise the name of the Lord. O give glory to this God of ours! The Rock - his deeds are perfect, and all his ways are just, a faithful God, without deceit, a God who is right and just. Those whom he begot unblemished have become crooked, false, perverse. Is it thus you repay the Lord, O senseless and foolish people? Is he not your father who created you, he who made you, on whom you depend? Remember the days of old, consider the years that are past; ask you father and he will show you, ask your elders and they will tell you. When the Most High gave the nations their heritage and disposed men according to his plan, in fixing the boundaries of the nations he thought first of Israel's sons. For Israel was the Lord's possession, Jacob the one he had chosen. God found him in a wilderness, in fearful, desolate wastes; he surrounded him, he lifted him up, he kept him as the apple of his eye. Like an eagle that watches its nest, that hovers over its young, so he spread his wings; he took him, placed him on his outstretched wings. The Lord alone was his guide and no other god was with him.
Dear Lord, thank you for life and all your love and care

Psalm 93: The Lord is king, with majesty enrobed, he has girded himself with power. The world you made firm, not to be moved. From all eternity, O Lord, you are. The oceans and coastlines of the world are majestic and powerful. But greater than the roar of mighty waters, more glorious than the surging of the sea is the Lord on high. Such a Lord, such a Creator, such a God. Truly your decrees are to be trusted. Holiness is fitting to your house O Lord, always and everywhere.
We praise you, Lord, our Creator

Revelation 21.1-4: Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth. The first heaven and the first earth had disappeared now, and there was no longer any sea. Here God lives among people. He will make his home among them. They shall be his people. He will be their God. His name is God-with-them. He will wipe away all tears from their eyes. There will be no more death, no more sadness. The world of the past has gone
Jesus, may the thought of heaven give us courage here on earth

Luke 8.4-15: One day Jesus told the people this story: A farmer was planting seeds in his field. Some seeds fell on the path. Birds ate them. Some seeds fell on rocky ground. They became sickly plants, without roots, and died. Some seeds fell among thorns. When they became plants, they were choked by the thorns. Some seeds fell on good soil and produced a rich harvest. People who hear God's word without good will are like the seeds on the path. They are easy prey for Satan. People who hear God's word only superficially are like the seeds on rocky ground. As soon as difficulties come, such people easily give up. People who hear God's word with one ear but with the other are listening to the call of greed and pleasure are like the seeds among thorns. Greed kills the word. People who hear God's word with good will and put it into practice are like the good seeds which produced a rich harvest
Jesus, please help me be good seed!

Reflection on the above readings: God, like parents, smiles when His children are good ... and grieves when they are not good

Two nights ago, because of storms and heavy rain, the 3 MercyHK stalls in Temple Street Market did very little business. But last night was a good one ... maybe because the Good Lord forgot to check the weather forecast for rain!

Tues May 19

Yesterday I was at Lai Chi Kok men's prison from 11am to 5pm .... not affected too much by the heavy rain since most of the prison is an indoor or semi-indoor type of place. These days ... never too late to start .... I try to remember to begin every conversation with a prisoner with the words "God is good" to which they reply "All the time". Only wish I could remember all the time!

The Book Blog:   4 readings + recordings
Comments welcome here
Readings are from Simple Bible

Deuteronomy 31: Moses said to the people: "I am 120 years old and can no longer come and go as I will. The Lord has told me I will not cross the Jordan." Moses then said to Joshua in the presence of all the people: "Be strong, stand firm. you are going with this people into the land promised by the Lord. The Lord himself will lead you; he will be with you; he will not fail you or desert you. Have no fear; do not be disheartened by anything.
Dear Lord, please help more and more people to choose life and blessings...and not to turn their backs on you

My recording of this reading

Psalm 92: It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to make music to your name, O Most High, to proclaim your love in the morning, and your truth right through the night. Your deeds, O Lord, have made me glad. For the work of your hands, I shout with joy. To me you give the wild ox's strength. You anoint me with the purest oil. May we love and praise you right through our lives, right till the end of our days. May we keep on proclaiming your goodness, proclaiming that in you, our rock, there is only goodness.
Lord, it is right and fitting to love and praise you

Revelation 20.11-15: Then I saw God sitting on a great white throne. I saw the dead, both great and small, standing in front of his throne, while the Book of Life was opened, in which was the record of everyone's life. Everyone was judged according to the way they had lived. Then Death and Hades were thrown into a burning lake. This burning lake is the second death. Anyone whose name could not be found in the Book of Life was thrown into the burning lake
Jesus, may all near and dear to me, be in the Book of Life

Luke 8.1-3: Jesus went to many towns and villages, proclaiming the Good News. The 12 apostles went with him, as did a group of women who had been healed of evil spirits and sicknesses: Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Susanna and several others. These women used their own money to support Jesus and the apostles
Jesus, thank you for all the women who support the spread of the Good News in today's world
