Tues June 10

Yesterday was the first business day for MercyHK's 2nd hand shop at 191 Temple Street. A dreadful day weather-wise: storms and heavy rain. Yet at the end of the day our sales amounted to $1,877. Thank you Jesus! And God bless all staff, helpers, patrons and donors! An updated financial report for June is here. Several times yesterday I heard local Chinese people in complimentary voices use the phrase "Waan bo" ("protect the environment" ... by reusing used items ...recycling) as they passed the shop.

My article in today's Ming Pao newspaper has the topic: 191 Temple Street. It's on Ming Pao website - click "Australian in HK". Text without recording (one change: business hours now 11am to 8pm, not 10am to 7pm)

Judges 3: Some of the Israelites forgot the Lord their God and worshipped false gods. As a result, they were enslaved by the king of Edom for 8 years. They cried to God for help and God raised up Othniel, a nephew of Caleb, to lead and rescue them. Then the land enjoyed peace for 40 years. But when Othniel died, the Israelites again began to do what displeases the Lord,
and were again enslaved, this time by Eglon king of Moab, for 18 years. Once more they cried to the Lord for help and he raised up Ehud, a left-hander. As Ehud presented tribute to Eglon, he said to Eglon: "I have a secret message for you". When they were alone, Eglon thought he was safe, because Ehud's knife was on his right thigh. Ehud then used his left-hand to grab the knife unexpectedly and killed Eglon. Ehud escaped from the king's quarters before the king's attendants knew Eglon was dead. Ehud then roused the Israelites to fight and defeat the Moabites, after which the land enjoyed peace for 80 years

Lord, please raise up good leaders in every country

Psalms 109-110: O God whom I praise, do not be silent, for people are bombarding me with  words of hate. They speak to me with lying tongues and attack me without cause. They repay me evil for good. While I pray for them, they show me hatred. I have become an object of scorn. Help me, Lord my God.
Lord, when people are unkind to me, please give me the grace to pray for them

Listen

Acts 4.23-31: When Peter and John were released, they went to a gathering of apostles and friends and told them everything that had happened. The group then prayed "Master, it is you who made heaven and earth and sea. Please protect us from leaders who threaten us. Help us to proclaim your message with great boldness. Bless us to heal and work miracles through the name of your holy servant Jesus". As they prayed, the building rocked. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to proclaim the word of God boldly.
Jesus, by the grace of your Holy Spirit, please help me to proclaim your message boldly

Listen

Luke 11.27-32: While Jesus was speaking, a woman in the crowd called out "Blessed the womb that bore you and the breasts that nursed you". Jesus replied "Even more blessed are those who hear the word of God and put it into practice!" Jesus also said "On Judgement day, the Queen of the South will rise up with the people of this generation and condemn them, because she came from a distant country to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and there is something greater than Solomon here"
Jesus, greater than Solomon, please help me put your teaching into practice

Listen

Reflection on the above readings: Acts encourages us to witness to Jesus with boldness (... which does not mean recklessness ...)

The MercyHK 2nd hand shop at 191 Temple Street has CCTV ... for insurance reasons as well as normal security reasons ... and the shop's management team can watch proceedings 24 hours a day on our mobile phones. Even when the shop is in darkness at night,  the CCTV keeps going with black and white images.

Readings are from Simple Bible

Judges 1-2: After the death of Joshua, the Israelites continued their campaign to occupy all parts of the land of Canaan. But as time went on, the Israelites began to forget the Lord their God. As a result, things went wrong for the Israelites. To help them, the Lord appointed judges to lead them. For a while the people followed the judges. But as soon as a judge died, the people again lapsed into idolatry.
Dear God, please don't let me forget you. Please help me pray to you and love you every day

My recording of this reading

Psalm 108: My heart is ready, O God. I will sing, sing your praise. Awake, lyre and harp. I will awake the dawn. I will thank you, Lord, among the peoples, praise you among the nations, for your love reaches to the heavens and your truth to the skies. O Lord, come and deliver us today. Help us with your right hand. Give us help in difficult situations. With your help we shall be brave.
Lord, we need your help every day

Listen

Acts 4.13-22: The religious leaders were astonished that two uneducated men like Peter and John could speak so confidently. The leaders also realized that a miracle had taken place: the crippled man was standing next to Peter and John. The leaders gave Peter and John a formal legal warning not to speak in future about Jesus. Peter and John replied "Which is right? To obey you, or obey God? We cannot stop proclaiming what we have seen and heard". The leaders released the two apostles. They were afraid to punish them since all the people were giving glory to God for the miracle that had happened
Jesus, please help me obey you always

Listen

Luke 11.9-13: Jesus said to his disciples "Ask, and it will be given to you. Search, and you will find. Knock, and the door will open. If children ask their parents for something good, their parents will always give it to them. Even more so  will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him
Heavenly Father, please give me your Holy Spirit!

Listen

Reflection on the above readings: A new term "prophetic obedience" helps understand the situation in Acts ....when it's ok and maybe even necessary to disobey legal authorities if their teaching is not in line with Jesus' teaching.

Yesterday with volunteers and workers at the MercyHK shop at 191 Temple Street I twice enjoyed a lovely meal (12.30 & 6pm) at the Pakistan restaurant opposite 191 ... managed by an old friend. I thoroughly recommend the menu (especially the pizzas!)

Trinity Sunday

Yesterday morning there was a long but happy meeting for volunteers preparing to help at the MercyHK 2nd hand shop at 191 Temple Street - now due to open this afternoon. After the meeting, the volunteers joined HK Vicar General Fr Dominic Chan with Deacon Simon and Deacon Vincent and cathedral parishioners for a lunch meeting followed by a visit to some of  the formerly homeless people now staying at rooms in the YMT Ping On Building rented by MercyHK. Photos at FB page of MercyHK here. Fr Dominic mentioned visit in his Cantonese homily last night - here

c.f. readings for Trinity Sunday

Exodus 34: Again Moses went up the mountain and stood before God. God described himself: "I am the Lord, a God of tenderness and compassion, slow to anger, rich in kindness and faithfulness." When Moses came down from the mountain the skin on his face was radiant after speaking with God.
Dear God, we praise your tenderness and compassion

My recording of this reading

Daniel 3.52-55: You are blest, Lord God of our fathers. To you glory and praise for evermore. Blest your glorious holy name. To you glory and praise for evermore. You are blest in the temple of your glory. To you glory and praise for evermore. You are blest on the throne of your kingdom. To you glory and praise for evermore. You are blest who gaze into the depths. To you glory and praise for evermore. You are blest in the firmament of heaven. To you glory and praise for evermore.

Recording

2 Corinthians 13.1-13: Soon I will be with you for a third time. What I ask is that you live the way God wants you to live. So, grow in your Christian life. Help one another. Be united. Live in peace, and the God of love and peace will be with you. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God the Father, and the friendship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
Father, Son and Holy Spirit, help me live the way you want me to live

 Recording

John 3.13-17: Jesus said to the religious leader: "The Son of Man must be lifted up on a cross, as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him". God loved the world so much, that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not be lost, but may have eternal life. For God sent his Son into the world, not to condemn the world, but so that through him the world might be saved.
Jesus, only Son of God the Father, thank you for coming into this world. Please help more and more people believe in you

   For Trinity Sunday:
The Trinity decide to go on a vacation. The Son proposes to go to San Fransisco, but the Father finds that place too liberal minded. So the Father proposes to go to Jerusalem. "I can't go on vacation there!" says the Son, "That's where I got killed!"
The Holy Spirit leaves to take a phone call. When the Holy Spirit returns, the Father and the Son propose going to Rome.  "Great idea" says the Holy Spirit. "I've never been there!"

Joshua 23-24: As Joshua neared the end of his life, he urged the Israelites to stay faithful to the Lord while living with many foreign neighbours: "Continue to observe everything written by Moses. Do not mingle with the foreign peoples still among you.
Do not utter the names of their gods. Stay loyal to the Lord your God. Love the Lord your God. If you stay faithful, the Lord will bless you. If you are unfaithful, everything will go wrong for you. Choose today whom you will serve: the Lord our God, or false gods. As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord."

Dear Lord, may Joshua's dying words be true for me: "As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord".

My recording of this reading

Psalm 107: O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His great love is without end. Let them say this, those the Lord has helped, people from east and west, north and south. Some people wandered in the desert, lost and unable to find their way to safety. In their hunger and thirst they cried to the Lord for help. He rescued them and showed them the way to safety. Let them thank the Lord for his love, for he fills the hungry with good things.
Some people were prisoners in misery and chains, living in darkness and gloom. In their distress they cried to the Lord for help. He rescued them and restored their freedom. Let them thank the Lord for his goodness, for he shatters the iron bars of prisons.
Some people were sick on account of their sins, unable to eat,  and close to death. They cried to the Lord in their need. He healed them and saved them from the grave. Let them thank the Lord for his love, for the wonders he does for us.
Some people sailed to the sea in ships and were caught in terrifying storms. They cried to the Lord in their need and he calmed the sea and wind. Let them thank the Lord for his love, for the wonders he does for us.
Whoever is wise should meditate on these things and reflect on the love of the Lord.

Thank you Lord, for your rescuing love

Acts 4.1-12: While Peter was talking to the crowd, some religious leaders and soldiers came and arrested Peter and John. The next day the leaders held a meeting and asked the prisoners: "By what power and by whose name did you heal the crippled beggar?" Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, replied "The cripple is able to stand up perfectly healthy because he was healed by Jesus the Nazarene, the one you crucified, whom God raised from the dead. Salvation comes no other way. Only by the name of Jesus can we be saved"
Jesus, your name means "God
saves", you are indeed the Saviour of the world

Luke 11.1-4: Once when Jesus had finished praying in private, one of his disciples asked him "Lord, teach us to pray". Jesus replied "Pray like this: Father, may everyone love and honor you. Your kingdom come. Thank you for enough food for today.
Forgive us as we forgive others. Save us in time of trial"

Jesus, please teach me how to pray

Fri June 5

Yesterday morning I was at the High Court for the successful application by an African man for his case to go to the Court of Appeal.

In the late afternoon I was back on HK side for a committee meeting of Voice for Prisoners

Preparation work for MercyHK's 2nd hand shop at 191 Temple Street was held up yesterday morning when power was not available for the whole of the building of which our shop is on the GF. On the positive side (no pun intended ... positive electricity..) Eddie Chan and helper Ignatio yesterday ordered shelves for the shop ... due to be delivered tomorrow.

Joshua 22: The campaign to subdue the whole land had taken a long time. Joshua especially thanked the tribes from across the Jordan for their help. These tribes - Reuben, Gad and Manasseh - had been given land on the Eastern side of the Jordan,  but still helped in the campaign to control the Western side. Joshua said to them: "Despite the fact that the campaign has lasted so long, you have loyally helped your brothers. Keep on loving the Lord your God, following his paths. Be loyal to him and serve him with all your heart."
Dear Lord, please help me to be loyal - to you, to my family and to my country

My recording of this reading

Psalm 106:
O give thanks to the Lord for he is good. His great love is without end. They are happy who do what is right, who at all times remember what is just. When our ancestors came out of Egypt, they forgot the greatness of God's love. Each time they strayed, God forgave them. But still they continued to forget God who was their saviour, God who had done such great things for them in Egypt.
O Lord, our God, please don't let us forget your love

Listen

Acts 3.9-16: When people saw the former crippled man walking, they couldn't believe their eyes. So Peter said to them "Why are you so surprised? Do you think John and I made this cripple walk? It is by our faith in Jesus that this man has been restored to health. Jesus is the Holy One, the Just One, the Prince of Life whom you handed over to Pilate for crucifixion. But God raised him from the dead
Jesus, Prince of Life, please increase my faith in you. Please give me a faith that can bring your  healing to handicapped people

Listen

Luke 10.29-37: The religious leader then asked another question: "Who is my neighbor?" Jesus replied "A man on a journey was attacked by robbers. They beat him, took all he had, and left him seriously injured. A priest came by and saw the man, but did not help him. A temple worker also saw him, but did not help.  But a lowly foreigner who saw him was moved with pity. The foreigner bandaged his wounds, and used his own donkey to take the man to an inn. He paid the innkeeper to look after the man. Which of the three was a neighbor to the injured man?" The leader replied "The one who helped him". Jesus then said "Go, and do the same"
Jesus, please don't let me ignore people who need help

Thu June 4

O Holy Spirit, please may this night in HK be peaceful!

I spent most of yesterday working with others in the setting up of MercyHK's new 2nd hand shop (how can a second hand shop be new?! .. you know what I mean) at 191 Temple Street. Please God today the electricians will finish installing lights, power points, fans etc  ... and shelves will arrive. For the sake of protecting the planet - and to save a lot of money - we have made a decision to use fans instead of air conditioning.

Joshua 11-21Some kings in the north combined to fight the Israelites. But the Lord delivered them into the power of Israel. Eventually the whole country had rest from war, and the land was divided up among the 11 tribes. So it was that the Lord gave the Israelites all the land he had sworn to give their ancestors. They took possession of it and settled there. The Lord granted them peace on all their frontiers just as he had sworn to their ancestors. Of all the promises that the Lord had made to the House of Israel, not one failed.  All were fulfilled.
Dear Lord, please give peace to nations troubled by war

Recording

Psalm 105: Give thanks to the Lord, make known his deeds among all the peoples. O sing to him, sing his praise. Tell all his wonderful works. Be proud of his holy name. Let hearts that seek the Lord rejoice. Consider the Lord and his strength.
Constantly seek his face. Never forget how the Lord has helped us in the past, how he has protected Israel from its beginning till now.

Dear God, please help me understand how you have been loving and protecting me since the beginning of my life

Recording

Acts 3.1-10: One afternoon about 3pm, Peter and John went to the Temple for prayer. A beggar asked them for money. He was crippled from birth. Peter said to him "I don't have any silver or gold. But I do have something to give you: in the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, get up and walk!" Peter then took him by the hand and helped him to stand up. Immediately, his feet and ankles became firm and he could walk. He was so happy he started jumping around. He went into the Temple, praising God
Jesus, there are so many crippled people in the world. Please heal them

Luke 10.25-28: To test Jesus, a religious leader asked him in public "Master, what must I do to inherit eternal life?" Jesus replied "What does the Law say?" He replied "You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, and you must care for others as much as you care about yourself". "You are correct", said Jesus, "do this and life is yours".
Jesus,  help me to love you with all my heart .... and to care for others as much as I care about myself

Joshua 10:  Five kings in the southern part of the land made war on Gibeon. The Gibeonites appealed to Joshua for help.
Joshua and his soldiers marched through the night and caught the armies of the 5 kings by surprise and defeated them. The Israelite army also attacked other southern towns and captured them. Joshua and his army were victorious in the south because the Lord supported and helped them

Dear God, please help me in the battles of life

My recording of this reading

Psalm 104: Bless the Lord, my soul! Lord God, how great you are. You make the clouds your chariot. You walk on the wings of the wind. You make springs gush forth in the valleys. They give drink to all the animals of the field. You make grass grow for the cattle and plants to provide food for people. You give us wine to cheer our hearts and oil to make our faces shine. You made the moon to mark the months. The sun knows the time for its setting. How many are your works, O Lord. In wisdom you have made them all. The earth is full of your riches and the sea is swarming with life. All things, great and small, look to you for food.
You open your hand, they have their fill. You send forth your spirit, and life is created. You renew the face of the earth. I will sing to the Lord all my life. May my thoughts be pleasing to him.

Bless the Lord, my soul!

Acts 2.37-47: The crowd was deeply moved by Peter's words, and asked "What should we do?" Peter replied "You must repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then you too will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit". That day about 3,000 people were baptized. These remained faithful to the teaching of the apostles, to a life of sharing and caring, to the Breaking of Bread, and to prayer. Many miracles were worked by the apostles, and this made a deep impression on everyone. Each day the Lord added new members to their group
Jesus, please help me remain faithful to the Christian way of life

Luke 10.1-9:
The 72 came back rejoicing. "Lord", they said, "even the devils submit to us when we use your name". Jesus replied "Yes, I have given you  power to tread underfoot the whole strength of the enemy. Yet do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you. Rejoice rather that your names are written in heaven. Blessed are the eyes that see what you see. For I tell you that many prophets and kings wanted to see what you see, and never saw it; to hear what you hear, and never heard it".
Jesus, thank you for the gift of faith
