Yesterday morning I spent more than a hour at a local bank
setting up a special account for MercyHK's 2nd hand shop at 191 Temple Street ...
.which yesterday had it's 8th day of operation and continues to have average
daily takings of around HK$2,000 which is very, very pleasing. Updated financial report - here.
Shop is on target to greatly support the renting of rooms in nearby Ping On
building for homeless people. (New account number will be made public at end of
week after the account becomes a joint-account)
I

On yesterdays' menu I forgot to mention that last Sunday night I had a meeting

Judges
10-11: The
Israelites yet again served false gods,
and once more they were oppressed,
this time by the Ammonites. The
Israelites appealed to Jephthah to help them.
Jephthah was the son of a prostitute.
His brothers had driven him from home
and would not give him a share of their father's inheritance. Jephthah
went into exile and became a famous soldier. Jephthah
agreed to help the Israelites
after they agreed to make him their future leader. Jephthah
tried to reason with the Ammonite king,
but the king refused to negotiate a peace agreement. The spirit
of the Lord then came on Jephthah
and he led the Israelites to victory over the Ammonites.
Dear Lord, may
your spirit give courage to all leaders

Acclaim him, all you peoples! Strong is his love for us.
He is faithful for ever.
May all the nations love and

Acts
5.34-42:
One religious leader at the meeting, Gamaliel,
asked that the apostles be removed from the room. Then he spoke to the
other leaders: "Men of Israel, be careful how you deal
with these people. If this movement of theirs is of human origin, it will
die out of its own accord. But if it comes from God, you will not be able
to destroy it. You might even find yourselves fighting against God".
His advice was accepted. The apostles were
warned, flogged and released. They left the meeting glad to have had the
honor of suffering humiliation for the sake of Jesus. They resumed their
daily preaching, in the Temple and in private homes
Jesus, thank you for times
of suffering for you

Luke
13.18-35: Jesus said to the people "The kingdom of God is like a tiny seed
planted in the ground. It grows and becomes a big tree, and the birds
live in its branches.
The kingdom of heaven is like yeast mixed with flour until the flour
is leavened all through.
Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you kill the prophets who are sent to you. How
often have I longed to gather your children, as a hen gathers her
chickens under her wings, and you refused".
Jesus, may your kingdom grow in the hearts of more and more people

Judges
9: Gideon had seventy sons
by his wives and concubines.
One of his sons was Abimelech, son of a concubine. Abimelech became king
after murdering all but one
of his 70 half-brothers.
The half-brother who escaped was Jotham. Abimelech ruled over
Israel for 3 years.
Then God sent a spirit of discord
between Abimelech and the leaders of Shechem. The leaders of Shechem
rebelled against Abimelech.
Abimelech started attacking and destroying their towns. Abimelech besieged the
town of Thebez.
The people of the town took refuge in a tower. When Abimelech tried to
set fire to the tower,
a woman in the tower threw down a large rock
which crushed Abimelech's head.
Abimelech got his armor-bearer to kill him with a sword,
so that no one could say he was killed by a woman.
Dear

Psalm
116: I love the Lord for he has heard the cry of
my appeal.
He turned his ear to me in the day when I called him. They surrounded me, sorrow, distress and the
snares of death.
I was helpless, so the Lord saved me. Calm down my soul, for the Lord has been good.
I will walk in the presence of the Lord in the land of the living. How can I repay the Lord for his goodness to
me?
The cup of salvation I will raise to thank the Lord. O precious in the eyes of the Lord is the
death of his faithful.
Lord, you have loosened my bonds. I am your servant.

Acts
5.21-33: When the leaders had their big meeting later
that same morning, they sent for the apostles to be brought from prison. The police went to the prison, then came back
and reported to the leaders "We found that the prison was properly
locked, and the guards were on duty. But when we unlocked the door, there
was no one inside". Then a man arrived at the meeting with the
news "At this very moment, the men you imprisoned are now in the
Temple preaching to the people". The police again arrested the apostles and
brought them to the meeting.
When the main religious leader reminded them of his previous warning not
to preach, Peter and the apostles replied "Obedience to God comes
before obedience to men. God raised Jesus up to be the Savior. We are
witnesses to this, we and the Holy Spirit whom God gives to those who obey
him". This made the leaders so angry that they
wanted to kill the apostles.
Jesus, please help me put obedience to you
before all other obediences

Luke
13.10-17: One Sabbath day Jesus was teaching in a prayer hall. There
was a woman there who for 18 years had been possessed by a spirit
which left her bent over and unable to stand up straight.
When Jesus saw her, he called her over and said "Woman, you are rid of
your infirmity" and he laid his hands on her. At once she was healed
and could stand up straight, and she glorified God.
Jesus, please heal the people I know who are bent over and can't stand

Corpus

In a world which has so many problems .... when we often feel so weak and helpless ... it is good for us if we have the chance to spend some time in silent prayer before Jesus in the tabernacle of a church. No need to say much....just a word of praise ....quiet awareness of Jesus' presence....a reflection with Jesus on the day's Bible readings....a few prayers for special needs....a final prayer of thanks and praise. Yes, we can pray anywhere and at any time. But ten minutes spent before a tabernacle is one of the best things we can do for ourselves, our families, our nation, our world. May today's Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ give us the motivation to sometimes visit a church for prayer.
Yesterday
I had lunch with a wonderful group of people who regularly visit prisoners.
Since the group began last year, they have around 60 prisoners on their visit
list. God bless this beautiful group! At
the end of the meal one man in the group taught me something most valuable: on
my Android phone I can speak a message and it can be turned into the written
text of dozens of languages. Go to Settings, then System, then Language &
input, then click "Google voice typing", then click Languages ... and
select a maximum of 5 languages (at any time) ... then click Save, then at W/App
click "Type a message", then click keyboard icon
at bottom right of screen, then click Google
voice typing, then click "tap to speak" .... and what you say
(in any language you have selected) will be printed in that language!

continued his speech to the people: "Remember how the Lord your God led you
for 40 years in the wilderness, to humble you, to test you, to know your inmost
heart - whether you would keep his commandments or not. He humbled you, he
fed you with manna, to make you understand that we do not live on bread
alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God. Learn from this that
the Lord your God was training you as a man trains his child. Keep the
commandments of the Lord your God. Follow his ways and reverence him. When you
become prosperous in the land that God is giving you, do not become proud and
say your own efforts have brought you success. Take care and do not forget the

Yesterday morning I was at the High Court for the case of a young
South American woman charged with drug trafficking. Case was adjourned. In the
afternoon I spent time on jobs related to MercyHK's 2nd hand shop at 191 Temple

monthly rent for formerly homeless people now using using rooms at the Ping On

Judges 7: Gideon prepared to go
to war with the Midianites.
But God told him to reduce his number of soldiers. The army was told
"Let anyone who is frightened or fearful go home". 22,000 men went home;
10,000 stayed. The Lord said
there were still too many.
"So many men might cause Israel to claim that a victory
had nothing to do with the Lord".
So Gideon got the men to go to the river to drink. All those who lapped the water, like a
dog, he put on one side.
These numbered 300. The rest knelt down and used their
hands to drink.
These were sent home. Gideon divided his 300 men into 3
groups,
surrounding the Midianite camp. To each man he gave a horn and an empty
water container,
with a torch inside each container. In the middle of the night, they
attacked.
They sounded their horns and smashed their containers,
holding a horn in their right hand and a torch in their left. The Midianites woke in terror,
thinking that the Israelites had a huge number of men. In their panic, the Midianites attacked
each other
as they fled the camp. The Israelites drove the Midianites
from the Israelite homeland.

Judges 4-6: After Sisera's forces
were defeated,
the land enjoyed peace for 40 years. But then the Israelites
again lapsed into idolatry,
and so they were oppressed by the Midianites for 7 years. The Lord then raised up
Gideon to rescue the people. Following the Lord's
instructions,
Gideon at night time destroyed the altar to Baal
in his father's house. When the Midianites
heard what Gideon had done,
they prepared to attack the Israelites. The spirit of the Lord
came on Gideon and he rallied the Israelites.
Gideon asked for a sign
of success in battle,
and said to the Lord: "See now, I
spread out a fleece of wool on the ground;
tomorrow morning, if there is dew only on the fleece
and not on the surrounding ground,
then I know you will deliver Israel by my hand". And so it happened the
next morning:
the ground was dry but the fleece was drenched with dew. Gideon asked for a
second sign,
requesting that the fleece be dry but the ground covered with dew. And God did what Gideon
asked:
the fleece stayed dry, and there was dew on the ground

barns and build bigger ones, and store all my grain in them, and I will
say to my soul: My soul, you have plenty of good things laid by for many
years to come; take things easy, eat, drink, and have a good time". But God said to him "Fool! This very
night your earthly life will come to an end. And all your possessions, who
will get them?"
So it is when people store up treasure for themselves, instead of making themselves rich in the sight of God

and therefore again lost their freedom and peace. The Lord then used Deborah,
who was a judge and prophetess, to rescue the people. Deborah instructed Barak son
of Abinoam
to go and do battle with Sisera, the people's oppressor. Barak said he would go only if
Deborah went with him.
She agreed but then said that his hesitation would cause the Lord to give battle victory to a woman, not
Barak. When Barak's forces
routed those of Sisera,
Sisera fled and took refuge in the tent of Jael, wife of Heber. As Sisera slept from
exhaustion,
Jael drove a tent peg into his head and he died. So once again the Lord had
rescued the Israelites.
Dear God,
please give me more courage in the battle of life,
(and please protect and bless Barack Obama!)
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
111: I will thank the Lord with all my heart.
Great are the works of the Lord,
to be pondered by all who love him. His goodness stands firm for ever.
The Lord is compassion and love. His precepts are for all peoples and all
times.
He is to be honored by all nations. To love and honor the Lord
is the beginning of wisdom.
Dear Lord, please help me to
love and honor you every day

Acts 4.32-37: The apostles continued to witness to the
resurrection
of the Lord Jesus with great power. The whole group of believers was united, heart
and soul. They willingly shared everything they had with people who were
in need. Joseph was a Temple minister who had been born
in Cyprus. He sold a field he owned, and gave the proceeds to the
apostles. The apostles called him "Barnabas" ("Son of
Encouragement")
Jesus, help me to be more caring and
sharing

Luke
11.37-54: Jesus said to the religious leaders "You
worry so much about cleaning dirty dishes, but don't care about
having a dirty heart full of extortion and wickedness. At meetings and in the market, you like being
treated as people of importance. But in fact you are like unmarked tombs
that people walk on without knowing it. You expect ordinary people to observe
unreasonable laws, while you excuse yourselves from such laws. You don't care about obtaining real wisdom,
and you prevent others from obtaining wisdom". The leaders were stung by Jesus'
words, and they intensified their efforts to trap him in his speech
Jesus, help religious leaders be
sincere people
