Tues June 23

Yesterday from 1pm to 4pm I took part in two most useful meetings connected with my anti-drug campaign to stop drug mules coming to HK. In between meetings I was able to obtain an updated business licence for MercyHK. Licence is now on display at our 2nd hand shop at 191 Temple Street ... which is now giving free clothing/shoes etc to asylum seekers. Temple Street updated financial report - here

Judges 17-21: After Samson's death, there was no leader in Israel and everyone did as they pleased as lawlessness and anarchy became widespread.
Dear Lord, please don't let lawlessness increase in our world.

My recording of this reading

Psalm 123: To you have I lifted up my eyes, you who dwell in the heavens. My eyes, like the eyes of slaves on the hand of their lords. Like the eyes of a servant on the hand of her mistress, so our eyes are on the Lord our God till he show us mercy. Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy. We are filled with contempt. Indeed all too full is our soul with the scorn of the rich, with the proud man's disdain.
Lord, please protect poor people from being exploited by rich people

Acts 8.4-8: The believers who escaped from Jerusalem went from place to place spreading the Good News. One of these believers was Philip. He preached about Jesus in a Samaritan town. The Samaritans welcomed Philip's message because of the miracles he worked. Unclean spirits came out of many possessed people, and a number of handicapped people were cured. Such miracles caused great rejoicing in that town
Jesus, let there be more miracles in our day, especially the healing of handicapped people

Luke 15.11-24: Jesus told this story: a man had two sons. The younger said to his father "Father, give me the share of the estate that would come to me". So the father divided his property between them. A few days later, the younger son left for a distant land where he wasted his money in wild living. When he had used all his money, that country had a severe famine, and he began to feel the pinch, so he got a job on a farm  feeding  pigs. He would willingly have eaten the pigs' food, but no one offered him anything. Then he came to his senses and said "How many of my father's paid servants have more food than they want, and I am dying of hunger. I will leave this place and go to my father and say: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I no longer deserve to be called your son. Treat me as one of your paid servants." So he left the place and went back to his father.
While he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was moved with pity. He ran to the boy, clasped him in his arms and kissed him tenderly. Then the son said "Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I no longer deserve to be called your son". But the father said to his servants "Quick! Bring out the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the calf we have been fattening, and kill it. We are going to have a feast, a celebration, because this son of mine was dead and has come back to life. He was lost and is found."

Jesus, please help me understand how much you love me, no matter what  mistakes I make

Two more homeless people - a woman and a man - had a bed to sleep in last night at the Ping On Building in Yau Ma Tei after Eddie Chan (St Peter's Association) assessed their situation and I booked them in during the afternoon .... thanks to the help of so many kind HK people who are supporting MercyHK's project to help the homeless.

Judges 16: Samson went to Gaza and entered the house of a prostitute. The men of Gaza tried to capture Samson but he eluded them. Samson then fell in love with a woman called Delilah. The Philistine leaders pressured Delilah to find out the secret of Samson's great strength. Day after day Delilah pestered Samson until he told her his secret: "A razor has never touched my head, because I have been specially dedicated to God from my birth. If my hair is cut, I will lose my strength." Delilah then cut Samson's hair while he was asleep and called the Philistines to capture him. The Philistines bound Samson, put out his eyes
and chained him in a prison in Gaza. But in prison, Samson's hair began to grow again. The Philistines held a special ceremony in a large building to celebrate the capture of Samson. They paraded Samson at the ceremony and then made him stand between two pillars. Samson prayed to God for strength one more time and the Lord heard his prayer. He then used his great strength
to pull down the main pillars supporting the building. In this way, at his death, Samson killed more Philistines than before he went to prison.

Dear Lord, you once gave special strength to Samson. Please give me strength to face the battles of life.

Psalm 122: I rejoiced when I heard them say "Let us go to God's house." And now our feet are standing within your gates, O Jerusalem. For the peace of Jerusalem pray "Peace be to your homes." For love of the house of the Lord I will ask for your good.
Lord, may your peace be in our hearts and homes

Acts 7.55-8.3: Stephen, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked up and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at God's right hand. "I can see heaven thrown open", he said, "and Jesus standing at the right hand of God". At this, the religious leaders at the meeting covered their ears with their hands. They sent Stephen out of the city and stoned him. The false witnesses (who were required to throw the first stones) put down their clothes at the feet of a young man named Paul. As they were stoning him, Stephen prayed "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit". Then he knelt down and prayed "Lord, do not hold this sin against them". Then he died. Paul entirely approved of the killing. That day a bitter persecution started against the church in Jerusalem and everyone except the apostles fled to the countryside. Paul  began working for the destruction of the church. He went from house to house arresting men and women and sending them to prison
Jesus, thank you for the example of Stephen who, like yourself, forgave those who were killing him

Luke 14.12-14: Jesus said to the meal guests "When you give a lunch or a dinner, do not ask your friends, family, or rich neighbors. Rather, when you have a party, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind. That they cannot repay you means you are fortunate, because repayment will be made to you when the virtuous rise again"

Yesterday I attended a 2 hour meeting to do with my anti-drug campaign .... and spent much time on office jobs (.. the usual weekend catch-up operation) ... distracted as the day went on by football in Australia ...where the Lions had another good win.

Late afternoon on the train to Tai Wai for a special O.M.I. Mass, I met a man from Zambia who I had met some years ago .. and he clearly remembered the conversation we had then. Good memory!

c.f. readings for Sunday 12

Jeremiah 18-20: Some officials decided to get rid of Jeremiah. They did not want to listen to his message any more. "Come on,", they said, "let us make a case against him." Jeremiah prayed to God: "Lord, you know that people are plotting against me. Please help me and keep me safe." One of the Temple priests had Jeremiah beaten and put in stocks for a day near the Temple. Again Jeremiah prayed to God: "You have seduced me, Lord. You have told me to proclaim a harsh message for the people. This has made me a laughing-stock. Being your messenger has caused me insult  all the day long. At one stage I even thought of not speaking your message any more. But then I felt a fire burning in my heart. I could not stop thinking of you. I just had to speak your message."
Lord,  please increase my love for you. Please give me more courage to speak your message to my family, friends and people I meet

My recording of this reading

Psalms 69-70: Save me, O God, for the waters have risen to my neck. I am sinking fast and can't keep afloat much longer. So many people hate me without cause. I have no more strength to resist them. May my situation not cause anyone to lose faith in you. May people realize that it is for your sake that I am taunted. Taunts have broken my heart. No one shows me any compassion. For food they give me poison. In my thirst they give me vinegar to drink. Lord, do not hide your face from your servant. Answer quickly for I am in distress. You are my rescuer, my help, O God. O Lord, do not delay to help me.
O God come to our  assistance. Lord make haste to help us

Romans 5.12-21: Through one man, Adam, the virus of sin entered the world, and sin infected everyone with death. Through one man, Jesus, the divine anti-virus of grace entered the world, and brought the gift of eternal life to everyone who allows it to be installed in their heart. The divine anti-virus of grace is more powerful than any sin virus.

Matthew 10.17-42: Jesus said to his apostles "Because you follow me and speak my message, therefore you will be arrested and put in prison. But don't worry about what to say for your defense. What to say will be given you by the Holy Spirit. Boldly proclaim my message and do not be afraid of persecution. Take up your cross and follow me. Anyone who does not take up his cross and follow me is not worthy of me."
Jesus, please give me more courage

Sat June 20

Yesterday I was at Lai Chi Kok men's prison from 11am to 4pm .... my first visit in about a month .... very different from a few years ago when I used to visit Lai Chi Kok several times a week. When the MercyHK 2nd hand shop at 191 Temple Street is running smoothly I hope I can get more time for prison visits. I suppose I shouldn't say this (although even the women officers at the women's prisons say the same thing): men's prisons not as complicated as women's prisons!

Judges 15: When Samson found out his wife had been given to someone else he took his revenge on the Philistines by setting fire to their crops. The Philistines then attacked the land of Judah, trying to capture Samson. To avoid war with the Philistines,
the men of Judah bound Samson with ropes and handed him over to the Philistines. But as the Philistines approached him, Samson was filled with the spirit of the Lord and broke free from the ropes. He saw a dead donkey's jawbone on the ground
and used this to strike down many Philistines before making his escape.
Samson was judge in Israel for 20 years.
My recording of this reading

Psalms 120-121: I call to the Lord in the hour of my distress: "Lord save me from people who speak with lying lips". Long enough have I been dwelling with those who hate peace. I am for peace, but they are for fighting. I lift up my eyes to the mountains. From where shall come my help? My help shall come from the Lord who made heaven and earth. The Lord is our guard and our shade. Day and night we shall not be afraid. The Lord will guard our going and coming both now and forever.
Lord, please protect us from danger, day and night

Acts 7.1-54: The meeting of religious leaders had falsely accused Stephen of being disloyal to Moses. So Stephen gave a long speech, full of loyalty to Moses. Then he made a stinging attack on the leaders: "You stubborn people, with your pagan hearts and pagan ears. You are always resisting the Holy Spirit, just as your ancestors did. Your ancestors killed the prophets who foretold the coming of the Just One. You have gone further: you have killed the Just One himself". When the leaders heard these words, they were very angry and wanted to kill Stephen
Jesus, Just One from heaven, please don't let me resist the Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit of God, please increase your influence in my life

For today's Feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary:
Luke 2.15-19: After the angels went away, the shepherds said to one another "Let's go to Bethlehem and see what the Lord has told us about". So they quickly went and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger. People who heard the shepherds talk about the angels were amazed. As for Mary, she treasured every moment of what had happened and pondered the whole event in her heart
Mary, please help us be people of reflection and prayer

"Over the top" - the love in Jesus' heart (John W)

Yesterday morning I was at the High Court for the sentencing of a man from Africa on a drug trafficking charge. The rest of the day was spent on jobs to do with MercyHK's 2nd hand stall at 191 Temple Street ... one job being the finalising of a special bank account (with a joint signatory) for the project and the transfer of funds to the new account. While at the two banks concerned I said a few special prayers for the kind people whose donations provided the funds (which will be used mainly to pay rent for rooms for homeless people .... including a man recently released from prison who is due to be repatriated to his own country on June 28, but needs to be in a nursing home until then because he is paralysed).

Readings from Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

2 Corinthians 5.14-19: The love of Christ is like a tsunami. It overwhelms us and sweeps us away when we remember how Jesus died for everyone. God, through Christ, has repaired his friendship with humanity. We must spread the news of this reconciliation.
"And when I think, that God his Son not sparing, sent him to die, I scarce can take it in"
- from "How Great Thou Art"
My recording of this reading

Ephesians 3.14-21: This is what I pray, kneeling before the Father from whom every family, whether spiritual or natural, takes it name: May he give you  power through his Spirit, for your hidden self to grow strong. May Christ live in your hearts through faith. Planted in love and built on love, may you continually focus on the love of Christ, until your life is filled with that love.
Glory be to him whose power  working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine. Glory be to him from generation to generation in the Church, and in Christ Jesus for ever and ever. Amen

Matthew 11.25-30: One day Jesus prayed: Father, Lord of heaven and earth, I am joyfully amazed at the way simple people understand and accept what I'm saying, while proud and clever people miss the plot. And he said to the ordinary people: Come to me, all you who are treated unfairly by unjust religious laws. I will give you peace and justice. Learn from me, and you will know peace, for I am gentle and humble of heart.
Jesus, please help people who are suffering from unjust religious laws

John 19.31-37: The next day was the Passover. To prevent the bodies remaining on the crosses during the Passover, the soldiers broke the legs of the two men crucified with Jesus. But when they came to Jesus, they saw that he was already dead. Instead of breaking his legs, they pierced his side with a spear.  Immediately there came out blood and water. And so the Scriptures were fulfilled "Not one of his bones will be broken" and "They will look on the one they have pierced".
Jesus, please help me understand how blood and water are symbols of the Eucharist and Baptism

Thu June 18

Yesterday afternoon at Yau Ma Tei I was privileged to take part in a Mass led by Bishop Joseph Ha to mark the 40th anniversary of the ordination of Fr David Lau, parish priest of Yau Ma Tei parish. Bishop used Fr David's love for football (soccer) as a common binding theme in his homily! Congrats Fr David!

Yesterday was trading Day 10 for the MercyHK 2nd hand shop at 191 Temple Street, with sales once again near the $2,000 mark ... very, very pleasing. Shop is on target to not only cover its own expenses but also to greatly support the renting of rooms in nearby Ping On building for homeless people. God bless all kind workers, volunteers, patrons and supporters of the shop!

Tomorrow is the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus .... a good day to get to Mass or visit a church or do some special work of kindness. A good day to ask Jesus' mercy on our troubled world

Judges 14Samson wanted to marry a Philistine woman, even though custom required he marry an Israelite. On his way to visit the woman in Philistine territory, Samson was confronted by a young lion. The spirit of the Lord filled Samson and he tore the lion to pieces with his bare hands. On his next visit to the woman's home, Samson saw that in the carcass of the dead lion
there was a swarm of bees, and honey.
The people of the village made a wedding feast for 7 days. But they were scared of Samson so they assigned 30 men to stay with him. Samson challenged them to answer a riddle: if they got the right answer before the 7 days were over, he would give them 30 pieces of silver and 30 festal robes. But if they failed to get the right answer, they had to give Samson 30 pieces of silver and 30 robes. They agreed to the challenge. Samson stated his riddle: "Out of the eater came what is eaten, out of the strong came what is sweet". Three days went by and they could not solve the riddle.
So they asked Samson's wife to find out the answer. Day after day she pestered Samson with pleading and tears until, on the 7th day, he told her. She then told the men. The men then said to Samson: "What is sweeter than honey, and what is stronger than a lion?" Samson then went to a nearby Philistine town and killed 30 men there. He took their robes and gave them to the 30 wedding feast guests. Full of anger, he stormed out of the village and returned to his parents' house. His wife was then given to the companion who had been his best man.

Dear God, please help me control my anger

Psalm 119: They are happy who follow God's word, those who seek God with all their hearts. How can young people avoid evil? By seeking you and obeying you, Lord. Open my eyes, Lord, that I may understand the beauty of your word. Lord, when I'm worried or in trouble, your word revives me and gives me strength. Lord, keep my eyes from what is false. Bend my heart to your word and not to love of gain. The word from your mouth means more to me than silver and gold. The unfolding of your word gives light and teaches simple people.
Lord, thank you for your word which gives peace to our hearts

Acts 6.8-15: One of the seven deacons, Stephen, was filled with grace and power. He began to do many miracles. A group of Jews tried to beat Stephen in a debate. But they could not win, because the Holy Spirit was guiding Stephen in his speech. The group then got some men to falsely accuse Stephen of being disloyal to Moses and to God. The group had Stephen arrested and brought before a meeting of the religious leaders. At the meeting, false witnesses accused Stephen of speaking against Moses and the Law
Jesus, please protect people who are accused by false witnesses

Luke 14.7-11: At the leader's house, Jesus noticed how the guests picked the places of honor. He said to them "When someone invites you to a meal, do not choose a seat of honor. Rather, when you are a guest, make your way to the lowest place and sit there. Maybe your host will ask you to move to a seat of honor. Everyone who exalts himself, will be humbled. Whoever humbles himself, will be exalted"
Jesus, please help me  choose the lowest place

Wed June 17

Yesterday morning I attended a sharing session with 12 priests from the CICM congregation - at St Paul's retreat centre in Sheung Shui, after which I spent the rest of the day at nearby Lo Wu women's prison (which is now housing an extra 100 remand prisoners from Tai Lam prison during renovations at TL). At one stage as I traversed the lower ground tunnel of the prison I saw huge rolls of material to be used for the making of millions (!) of face masks ... the prisoners continuing to work most diligently in helping keep up the supply of masks for HK .... producing something like 100,000 masks per day.

Judges 12-13: Jephthah was judge in Israel for 6 years. For the following 25 years, Ibzan (7 years), Elon (10 years) and Abdon  (8 years) were judges. After these judges, the Israelites again were unfaithful to the Lord and so they were oppressed by the Philistines for 40 years. It was then that the angel of the Lord appeared to Manoah's wife and said to her: "You are barren and have had no child. But you will soon conceive and bear a son. No razor is to touch his head, for he shall be dedicated to the Lord from his mother's womb. It is he who will rescue Israel from the Philistines". The woman gave birth to a son and called him Samson. The child grew and the Lord blessed him.
Dear Lord, please bless all barren women

Psalm 118: Give thanks to the Lord for he is good. His love has no end. Let the sons of Israel say: "His love has no end." Let those who honor the Lord say: "His love has no end." It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in humans. It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes. I was falling, falling, falling, but the Lord was my helper. The Lord is my strength and my song. He is my saviour. The Lord's right hand has triumphed. His right hand has raised me up. I shall not die, I shall live and recount all his deeds. The stone which the builders rejected has become the corner stone. This is the work of the Lord, a marvel in our eyes. This day was made by the Lord. We rejoice and are glad.
Lord, we give thanks to you, for you are good. Your love has no end

Acts 6.1-7: About this time as the number of disciples kept growing, the twelve apostles decided to give other men the job of daily food distribution. The apostles said to the whole group of believers  "It is not right for us to neglect the service of the word. Therefore you should choose seven men of good reputation, filled with the Holy Spirit and with wisdom. We give them the food  distribution job, so that we can devote ourselves to prayer and the service of the word". The whole assembly approved of this idea. They chose seven men and presented them to the apostles who prayed over them with the laying on of hands. The word of the Lord continued to spread. Even a large number of priests became believers
Jesus, please bless all deacons. Fill them with the courage and wisdom of the first seven deacons

Luke 14.1-6: One Sabbath day Jesus went for a meal to the house of a religious leader. In the house Jesus saw a man with dropsy. Jesus asked the leaders present there "Is it against the Law to cure a man on the Sabbath?" But they remained silent.
Jesus took the man, healed him, and sent him away. Then Jesus said to the leaders "Which of you here, if his son falls into a well, will not pull him out on a Sabbath day?" Again the leaders remained silent

Jesus, help me understand that "the Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath"

Reflection on the above readings:  God bless all the deacons in the world .... and bless the Pope's re-convened commission to study the possibility of women deacons!

Yesterday morning's sharing session (see top of today's menu) at St Paul's, Sheung Shui,  was about the Temple Street project to help homeless people. In fact the project's early beginnings go back to the same St Paul's in 2017 during the O.M.I. annual retreat ... when our retreat speaker from the Philippines issued these challenging words: "You priests, how often each week do you have a meal with middle-class friends .... and ... how often each week do you have a meal with poor people?!
