Tues June 30

Yesterday morning I had a meeting with an Indonesian women recently jury-freed 7:0 after more than 3 years in prison. She is one of 7 Indonesian women freed over the past year or so .... all of them tricked by Nigerian boyfriends to collect/deliver parcels of drugs. My YouTube interviews with previous Indonesian women - here

I spent most of the rest of the day at the desk, trying to catch up on a backlog of jobs mainly related to prison ministry. Late afternoon on the way to church I went to Kowloon Central Post Office where I learnt that there is still no airmail service to Australia ... only sea mail.

I read every word of this:
The 3 Ds of cyber crime - wake up!

1 Samuel 1: Each year, Elkanah and his two wives Hannah and Peninnah,  went to Shiloh to worship the Lord. Peninnah had children, but Hannah was barren. Each year at the temple, Peninnah would taunt Hannah because she was barren. One year at the temple, Hannah prayed in great distress: "God, if you give me a child, I will dedicate him to you". Not long after, Hannah conceived a son whom she called "Samuel". When Samuel was weaned, she took him to the temple and gave him to the priest there to serve the Lord for the rest of his life.
Dear God, please bless all women who are unable to have a baby

My recording of this reading

Psalm 127: If the Lord does not build the house, in vain do its builders labor. If the Lord does not watch over the city, in vain does the watchman keep vigil. Success comes not from earlier rising or from going later to rest, but from the Lord's blessing. Success is from the Lord who blesses the womb of  his beloved while she sleeps. Truly, children are a gift from the Lord, a blessing, the fruit of the womb.
Lord, many people these days don't want children. Please help such people understand that children are a blessing

Acts 9.32-35: Peter visited churches in many areas. When he went to Lydda, he saw a man named Aeneas, a paralytic who had been bed-ridden for 8 years. Peter said to him "Aeneas, Jesus Christ cures you. Get up and fold up your sleeping mat". Aeneas got up immediately. The people of that area who saw him, were converted to the Lord

Luke 18.9-14: Some people prided themselves on being virtuous, and despised others. Jesus told them this story: Two men went to the Temple to pray, one a religious leader, the other a social outcast. The leader stood there and said "I thank you, God, that I am not greedy, unjust and adulterous like other people such as this outcast here". The outcast did not even raise his eyes, but beat his breast and said "God, be merciful to me, a sinner". The outcast, I tell you, went home a friend of God. The leader did not. People who exalt themselves will be humbled. People who humble themselves will be exalted.
Jesus, be merciful to me, a sinner

c.f. readings for Feast of Peter & Paul

Acts 12.1-17: About this time, King Herod began persecuting the church. He beheaded the apostle James, brother of John. He arrested Peter during Passover time. He put Peter in prison and planned to have him put on trial and killed after Passover. Each day Peter was in prison, the believers stormed heaven praying for him. On the night before he was to be put on trial, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, fastened with chains, with more soldiers at the prison entrance. Suddenly Peter's cell was filled with light, and an angel told him to get up. The chains fell from his hands. The angel led Peter out of the prison, without the guards knowing what was happening. Peter then left for another place. Herod was unable to find him.
Jesus, please help Christians who are in prison for their faith

My recording of this reading

Psalm 34: I will bless the Lord at all times, his praise always on my lips. In the Lord my soul shall make its boast, the humble shall hear and be glad. Glorify the Lord with me, together let us praise his name. I sought the Lord and he answered me. From all my terrors he set me free. The angel of the Lord is encamped around those who revere the Lord, to rescue them. Taste and see that the Lord is good. They are happy who seek refuge in him. The Lord is close to the broken-hearted. Those whose spirits are crushed he will save.
Lord, by our Bible reading and prayer, may we taste and see your goodness each day

2 Timothy 4.6-8:
As for me, my life of service to the Lord is nearly over. I have fought the good fight to the end. I have run the race to the finish. I have kept the faith. The Lord will soon give me the best of all prizes: eternal life in heaven. He will give it not only to me, but to everyone who has loved him sincerely in this life.
Jesus, help me keep running to the finish line

Recording

Matthew 16.13-20: One day Jesus asked his disciples "Who do people say the Son of Man is?" The disciples replied "Some people say you are one of the famous prophets". Jesus then asked them "And what about you. Who do you say I am?" Peter answered "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God". Jesus then said to Peter "Blessed are you, for my Father in heaven has revealed this to you. So I now say to you: you are Peter ('the rock') and on this rock I will build my church. I will give you the keys of the kingdom."
Jesus, Son of God,  please help the church to continue your work on earth

c.f. readings for Sunday 13

2 Kings 4: A poor  widow whose husband had been a prophet asked Elisha for help when a creditor demanded her two sons as slaves. All she had was a small pot of oil, not enough to pay her debts. Elisha told her to get many jars, and start pouring oil from the pot into the jars. As she and her sons did this, the oil did not run out. Elisha told her to sell the oil to pay off her debts. At another time Elisha  brought back to life a dead child. He also once brought about a miraculous multiplication of bread.
Dear God,  you once worked miracles by the prayers of Elisha. Please let  miracles be done in our day.

Psalm 89: I will sing for ever of your love, O Lord. Of this I am sure, that your love lasts for ever. The heavens proclaim your wonders, O Lord. The heavens are yours, the world is yours. Blessed the people who find joy in you, who walk, O Lord, in the light of your face.
Thank you, Lord, for our beautiful world

Romans 6.3-11: When we were baptized, two things happened - 1: We went into Jesus' tomb and joined him in death. We died. - 2: We rose from the dead with Jesus. We came back to life. This dying and rising means we have died to sin, and risen to a new life. We died to an old life, and we came back to a new life. We have been re-born, born again.
Jesus, please help me leave my old life behind. Help me live a new life with you

Matthew 10.17-42: Jesus said to his apostles "Because you follow me and speak my message, therefore you will be arrested and put in prison. But don't worry about what to say for your defense. What to say will be given you by the Holy Spirit. Boldly proclaim my message and do not be afraid of persecution. Take up your cross and follow me. Anyone who does not take up his cross and follow me is not worthy of me."
Jesus, please give me more courage

Yesterday morning I took part in the funeral mass of dear friend Audrey G. Donnithorne, a great lady of China. Mass was lead by Cardinal John Tong, with the homily given by Cardinal Joseph Zen! How many people (apart from Popes) have two cardinals at their funeral?! And Cardinal Zen, aged 88!, did something I've never seen anyone else do: before he began his homily, he put a face mask on the microphone at the reader's stand, then took off his own mask! ... reversing the process after he spoke.

Ruth 3-4: Naomi told Ruth to go to the threshing shed of Boaz and to sleep there at the feet of Boaz, this action symbolizing her wish to marry Boaz. When Boaz discovered Ruth there during the night, he praised Ruth for wanting to continue Elimelech's family. The next day, Boaz went to the gate of Bethlehem and met the only man who preceded him in the legal right to marry Ruth. The man agreed to let Boaz marry Ruth and so Boaz took Ruth as his wife. Boaz and Ruth had a son, Obed.
Obed was the father of Jesse whose son was King David.
Dear God, please

Psalm 126: When the Lord delivered Zion from bondage, it seemed like a dream. Then was our mouth filled with laughter,
on our lips there were songs. What marvels the Lord worked for us. Indeed we were glad. Those who are sowing in tears
will sing when they reap. They go out, full of tears, carrying seed for the sowing. They come back, full of song, carrying their sheaves.

Dear God, please bless all people who are sorrowful as they work

Acts 9.20-31: After a few days, Paul began preaching in the prayer halls that Jesus is the Son of God. People were amazed at Paul's conversion. As time passed, the Jews planned to kill Paul. Paul heard of this and decided to leave the city. The Jews kept watch at the city gates to stop him leaving. Then one night he was able to escape: some disciples lowered him in a basket from the city wall. He went to Jerusalem and began preaching boldly in the name of the Lord. Soon another plot was made to kill him. Therefore the disciples sent him to Tarsus. After this the churches throughout Judea, Galilee and Samaria were left in peace. They steadily grew, strengthened by the Holy Spirit
Holy Spirit, please strengthen me, as you strengthened Paul and the first believers

Luke
18.1-7: Jesus told his disciples a story about the need to pray continually and never lose heart: There was a judge who had neither fear of God nor respect for people. In the same town there was a widow who kept asking the judge for justice against someone who had wronged her. For a long time the judge refused to help her, but at last he said to himself "I must give this widow her rights or she will pester me to death". Even more so God will  see that justice is done for those who cry out to him for help day and night, even if he delays to help them
Jesus, please give me the perseverance to pray each day

Ruth 2: Naomi and Ruth arrived in Bethlehem at the time of the barley harvest. Ruth went to the fields to look for left-over ears of corn. She came to the attention of Boaz, Elimelech's clansman. Boaz was a kind man and he told the men harvesting his crop
to let Ruth take some sheaves of corn, not just left-overs. As one of Naomi's closest relatives, Boaz was in a group of several men from which one man was required by law to marry Ruth and produce children for Elimelech

Acts 9.1-19: Paul kept up his campaign against the Lord's disciples. He got the ok to arrest followers of the Way in Damascus. But on his way to Damascus, a light from heaven surrounded him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying "Paul, Paul, why are you persecuting me?" He said "Who are you, Lord?" The voice replied "I am Jesus, and you are persecuting me. Go into Damascus and you will be told what to do". Paul's eyes were open, but for more than a day he was without his sight, and he ate and drank nothing. The Lord got Ananias, a disciple in Damascus, to visit Paul and pray for him. The Lord said to Ananias "Paul  is my chosen instrument to bring my name to non-Jews and Jews. He will suffer much for me". Ananias went to Paul and prayed for him with the laying on of hands. Straight away, Paul could see again. Then Ananias baptized him

Luke 17.11-19: On the way to Jerusalem, Jesus entered a village where 10 lepers came to meet him. They stood at a distance and called out "Jesus, Master, take pity on us!" Jesus said to them "Go and show yourselves to the priests". As they went away, their leprosy disappeared. Seeing that he was healed, one of them turned back praising God at the top of his voice. He threw himself at Jesus' feet and thanked him. This made Jesus say "Were not all 10 healed? Where are the 9 others?

Ruth 1In the days of the judges, there was famine in the land. Because of the famine, a man from Bethlehem named Elimelech moved to Moab. Elimelech took with him his wife Naomi and his two sons. Elimelech died. The two sons married Moabite women: Orpah and Ruth. But then the two sons also died. Naomi was heart-broken. She had lost her husband and two sons. She decided to return to Bethlehem and told her daughters-in-law to go back to their own homes. Orpah went back to her people. But Ruth with great loyalty and love chose to go with Naomi. Ruth said: "Wherever you go, I will go. Wherever you live, I will live. Your people shall be my people. Your God shall be my God. Wherever you die, I will die, and there I will be buried."
Dear God, in time of trouble, please help people to be loyal and kind to each other

Psalm 124: "If the Lord had not been on our side", this is Israel's song. If the Lord had not been on our side when people rose against us, then would they have swallowed us alive when they were angry with us. Luke 16.19-26: Jesus told this story to the people: There was a rich man who used to dress in expensive clothes and feast magnificently every day. At his gate there was a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, who longed to eat scraps that fell from the rich man's table. Dogs even came and licked his sores. The poor man died and was carried away by the angels to be with Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried. In his torment in Hell, the rich man looked up and saw Abraham a long way off with Lazarus at his side. So the rich man cried out "Father Abraham, pity me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in agony in these flames". "My son", replied Abraham, "remember that during your life, good things came your way, just as bad things came the way of Lazarus. Now he is being comforted here, while you are in agony"

c.f. Readings for Birthday of John the Baptist

Isaiah 46-49: The Lord called me before I was born. From my mother's womb he knew my name. While I was thinking that I had toiled in vain, all the while my cause was with the Lord. The Lord who formed me in the womb and assigned me to rescue his people, that same Lord  said to me: 'I will make you the light of the nations, so that my salvation will reach to the ends of the earth'. The Lord also says to his people: "Does a woman forget her baby, or a mother the child within her womb? Yet even if these forget, I will never forget you".
Lord, please help me understand how you loved me even before I was born.

My recording of this reading

Psalm 139: O Lord, you search me and you know me. You know my resting and my rising. You know exactly what's going on in my life, all my ways are an open book to you. Before ever a word is on my tongue, you know, O Lord, what I'm going to say. Your knowledge is beyond my understanding, too high, beyond my reach. It was you who created my being, knit me together in my mother's womb. I thank you for the wonder of my life, for the wonders of all your creation.
Lord, thank you for the gift of life. Please help me follow the path to eternal life

 Listen

Acts 13: Paul said: God deposed Saul and made David their king, of whom he approved in these words, "I have selected David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart, who will carry out my whole purpose." To keep his promise, God has raised up for Israel one of David's descendants, Jesus, as Saviour, whose coming was heralded by John when he proclaimed a baptism of repentance for the whole people of Israel. Before John ended his career he said, "I am not the one you imagine me to be; that one is coming after me and I am not fit to undo his sandal." "My brothers, sons of Abraham's race, and all you who fear God, this message of salvation is meant for you.

Luke 1.67-80: When John was named, his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and said "Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel. He has visited his people. And you, little child, you shall be called a prophet of the Most High. You will go before the Lord to prepare a way for him". When John grew older, he lived in the wilderness until the time came for him to begin his ministry.
Jesus, please help me prepare your way by helping people to know you

 Listen

Reflection on the above readings: Why June 24 for John the Baptist? Because Jesus was conceived in the 6th month of Elizabeth's pregnancy .... so John was born 6 months (approximately) before Jesus ... and 6 months before Dec 25 is June 24. Every Christian is meant to be like John the Baptist - preparing a way for Jesus in whatever way we can.
