Tues July 14
Yesterday morning I was at the High Court for the case of an
African woman on a drug trafficking charge. Also went to the Chinese University
office to enroll some prisoners. Then to a bookshop to get a text book for a
prisoner. After lunch I packed up for a prison visit today. In the late
afternoon I attended an O.M.I. meeting.
Maybe
this means no public Masses for the time being? (To be confirmed):

Samuel 13-15: Not long after he became king, Saul began
doing things
that caused Samuel to stop supporting him. Samuel clearly told Saul what the Lord wanted
Saul to do,
but Saul insisted on doing things his own way. Saul seemed more concerned about his own
popularity
than about being obedient to the Lord. This displeased the Lord, and he rejected Saul.
Dear God, please help us
not to disobey you.
"Your will be done".
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
144: Blessed be the Lord, my rock,
who gives me strength for every situation. He is my love, my fortress.
He is my stronghold, my savior. To you, O God, will I sing a new song,
you who so often rescued David your servant. Happy the people whose God is the
Lord.
Please continue to bless your people, Lord. Let our sons flourish like saplings
grown tall and strong from their youth;
our daughters graceful as columns,
adorned as though for a palace.
Let our crops and stock be blessed.
May there be no sound of weeping on our streets.
Lord, please help us love and
honor you every day.
Don't let us ever forget your love
Listen

Acts
15.36-40: Some time after this, Paul said to Barnabas
"Let's revisit the towns where we preached the word of the
Lord". Barnabas suggested taking John Mark with them,
but Paul opposed this, since John Mark had deserted them on the previous
trip when the situation became dangerous. After a violent argument, Paul and Barnabas
split up. Barnabas went with John Mark to Cyprus. Silas joined Paul for
his next journey
Jesus,
at your Last Supper you
prayed for the unity of your followers. Help us avoid
arguments

Luke
22.12-20:
On the evening of the Passover feast, Jesus and his apostles ate the
Passover Lamb in a large upper room furnished with couches. While they were having the meal, Jesus took some bread, and when he
had given thanks, broke it and gave it to his apostles saying: "This
is my body. Do this in memory of me".
Then he took a cup of wine and said "This cup is the new
covenant
in my blood which will be poured out for you"
Jesus, please help me understand how your Body
and Blood
are present in a Communion service

Samuel 12: As the elderly Samuel handed over leadership
to Saul,
he said to all the people:
"In future it is the king who will lead you. The Lord is my witness that I have never
treated you unjustly. You must follow the Lord with all your
heart.
Do not turn your back on the Lord's way.
Do not follow false ways."

Psalm
140-143: Lord, save me from
people who do evil,
you who do justice for the needy. I have no way out of
this situation.
And no one wants to help me. Lord, I beg you tonight
to make haste and give me an answer,
for my spirit fails within me. In the morning let me know your love
for I put my trust in you.
Lord, please help people who
are in big trouble

Acts
15.1-29: Some Jewish Christians came to Syrian
Antioch from Judea and said that non-Jewish Christians should be
circumcised. Paul and Barnabas argued against such an
idea, and decided to
go to Jerusalem to discuss this issue with the apostles there. During a long meeting, Peter reminded everyone
how the Holy Spirit had been poured out on non-circumcised people. James spoke
of how all peoples are meant to be consecrated to the Lord. James then issued a teaching for non-Jewish
believers:
"All we ask you to do is to abstain from food sacrificed to idols,
from blood from the meat of strangled animals, from fornication. Avoid these, and you will do what is right"
Jesus, please don't let me make unreasonable
demands on other people
Listen

Luke
22.1-6: Big crowds were in Jerusalem for the feast of
the Passover which was only a few days away. The
religious leaders were afraid that the crowds would prevent them
from killing Jesus. But then Satan entered into Judas Iscariot who
was one of the 12 apostles. Judas went to the leaders to plan how to
capture Jesus. The leaders agreed to give Judas some money for his
help. Judas then began looking for an opportunity to
betray Jesus at a time when there were no crowds around
Jesus, please protect me from Satan's
influence, and from any sort of pride that might make me want to abandon
your friendship

Sun July 12
Yesterday morning I accompanied a social worker for a visit to
the Alhambra (Ping On) building in Yau Ma Tei. The social worker will keep
regular contact with the formerly homeless people for whom MercyHK is now
renting rooms at the building. From Alhambra I went back to Temple Street for a
short 3 hour meeting with Eddie Chan (chairman of St Peter's Association) and
volunteers who kindly help at our 2nd hand shop at 191 Temple St
During the above meeting when at one stage I checked my email, I
was saddened to learn that my former novice-master, Pat
Slattery, left this world a few hours before the meeting began. He was
one of the kindest people I have ever known. I last saw him in 2007 when I
visited his home in Melbourne - photos here
(Aug 8). Earlier in the morning when I made my weekly check of the O.M.I.
website I learned that one of the early pioneers in HK, Fr
Richard Haslam, aged 93, also went home to Heaven, on July 5. May the
prayers of these two good men on the other side of the veil in Heaven help us on
this side each day. R.I.P.

c.f. readings for Sunday 15
Isaiah 55: Thus says the Lord: "As the rain and the snow come down from the heavens and do not return without watering the earth, making it yield and giving growth to provide seed for the sower and bread for the eating, so the word that goes from my mouth does not return to me empty, without carrying out my will and succeeding in what it was sent to do."

Psalms
61-65: O God, hear my cry, you who are my
refuge and help. In you alone is my soul at rest. My help comes from you.
Take refuge in God, everyone in trouble. Trust him at all times. O God, you are
my God, for you I long. My body and soul thirst for you like a dry, weary land
without water. Your love is better than
life, my lips will speak your praise. On my bed I remember you. On you I
muse through the night. You are the Creator of the world. You care for the
earth, you give it water. To you our praise is due, wherever we are on earth.
Lord, my soul clings to you.
Your right hand holds me fast

Romans
8.14-21: Everyone
moved by the Spirit is a child of God. The Spirit lets us use children's
language to speak to God tenderly as "Abba, Father". Since we are
God's children, we are also his heirs, coheirs with Jesus, sharing his suffering
so as to share his glory. What we suffer in this life can never be compared with
the glorious life we will have in heaven. The whole of creation looks forward to
sharing the same glory, to sharing immortality.
Abba, Father, may everyone love and honor you.
Help everyone get to heaven

Matthew 13.1-23: One day Jesus told the people this story: A farmer was planting seeds in his field. Some seeds fell on the path. Birds ate them. Some seeds fell on rocky ground. They became sickly plants, without roots, and died. Some seeds fell among thorns. When they became plants, they were choked by the thorns. Some seeds fell on good soil and produced a rich harvest.
People
who hear God's word without good will are like the seeds on
the path. They are easy prey for Satan. People who hear God's word only
superficially are like the seeds on
rocky ground. As soon as difficulties come, such people easily give up.
People who hear God's word with one ear but with the other listen to the call of
greed and pleasure are like the seeds among
thorns. Greed kills the word. People who hear God's word with good will
and put it into practice are like the
good seeds which produced a rich harvest.
Jesus, please help me be good seed!

Samuel 11:
The people of Jabesh-gilead told Saul
that the Ammonites were threatening them. The spirit of the Lord stirred up Saul

You know my resting and my rising. You know exactly what's going on in my life,
all my ways are an open book to you. Before ever a word is on my tongue,
you know, O Lord, what I'm going to say. Your knowledge is beyond my understanding,

Acts
14.19-27:
Some Jewish leaders arrived from Pisidian
Antioch and Iconium.
They turned the people of Lycaonia against Paul and Barnabas. The people stoned Paul and, thinking he was
dead, dragged him outside the town. The disciples gathered around Paul's body. As
they did so, he stood up. The next day he and Barnabas went to the town of
Derbe. After Derbe, they went back to Pisidian
Antioch via Lystra and Iconium. In each place they encouraged the
believers to persevere in the faith, especially during difficult times in
their lives. In each place they also appointed elders to be
church leaders.
Eventually Paul and Barnabas arrived back in Syrian Antioch, where they
gave an account of how God had opened the door of faith to non-Jewish
people

Luke
21.3-38: Jesus said to his disciples that Jerusalem
would be destroyed and its people scattered throughout the world. He also spoke of how his followers would be
persecuted, and of the end of the world: "The planets will be
shaken, nations will be in agony, bewildered by the force of the oceans.
Then they will see me coming in a cloud with great power and
glory. To prepare for your own end of earthly life,
stay faithful to prayer and goodness. Don't let your heart be coarsened by
debauchery, drunkenness and material cares". In this his final week on earth, Jesus spent
the daytime in the Temple, teaching. From early morning the people would
gather round him to listen to him. Then he would spend the night on the
Mount of Olives.
Jesus, help me be faithful to prayer
and goodness

1 Samuel 9-10:
Among the men of the tribe of Benjamin
there was a very tall and very handsome man named Saul. Once when he went in search of his father's
stray donkeys,
he met up with Samuel. The Lord had told Samuel that he would meet
Saul,
and that he should be anointed as king. And so Samuel took some oil and poured it on
Saul's head.
He told Saul that the Lord had chosen him to be king. Samuel presented Saul to the people.

138: I thank you, Lord, with all my heart.
You have heard the words of my mouth. With the angels I will bless you.
I will adore you in your holy temple. I thank you for your faithfulness and love
which are far above what we can understand. On the day I called you answered.
You increased the strength of my soul. All earth's kings shall thank you
when they hear the words of your mouth. They shall sing of the Lord's ways:
"How great is the glory of the Lord!" Though I walk in the midst of affliction
you give me life and frustrate my foes. Your love, O Lord, is eternal.
Do not abandon us whom you have made. Lord, when we remember how much

Acts
14.8-18:
In Lycaonia, there was a man who had never
walked in his life, because his feet were crippled from birth. As he listened to Paul preaching,
Paul noticed
him and saw that he had the faith to be cured. Paul said in a loud voice "Get to your
feet! Stand up!"
The crippled man jumped up and began to walk. The local people thought that Paul and
Barnabas must be gods, so Paul said to them "We are only human beings
like you. We have come with Good News to help you turn from empty idols to
the living God who made heaven and earth. It is he who sends you rain and
who makes your crops grow"

They like the front seats in prayer halls and the places of honor at

1 Samuel 8: When Samuel grew old, the people asked him to

Jews became believers, as did many non-Jewish people. During their stay in
Iconium, Paul and
Barnabas preached fearlessly for the Lord. And the Lord supported them by
allowing miracles to be worked by them. But their success again aroused

preached the Good News there

the sellers. According to the Scripture", he said, "my house

1 Samuel 7:
The Sacred Chest was taken from the town of
Beth-shemesh
to the town of Kiriath-jearim, to the house of Abinadab,
whose son Eleazar was consecrated to guard the Chest. After 20 more years, the Israelites again
longed for freedom from the Philistines. Samuel gathered all the Israelites at
Mizpah,
where after prayer,
battle was joined with the Philistines who were defeated. The Philistines no longer came into Israelite
territory.
Samuel was judge over all Israel for the rest of his life.
During Samuel's time, the Philistines no longer troubled Israel.
There was peace also between Israel and the Amorites. Each year Samuel went on circuit around the
country
to judge cases of law. He would then return to his home town of Ramah
and continue his work as a judge from there.
Dear God, please give the world
more leaders like Samuel

Psalm
136: O give thanks to the Lord for he is good,
for his great love is without end. It was his wisdom which made the skies,
for his great love is without end. It was he who made the sun, moon and stars,
for his great love is without end. It was he who rescued and protected his people
Israel,
for his great love is without end. He gives food to all living things,
for his great love is without end. To the God of heaven give thanks,
for his great love is without end.

Acts
13.13-52: Paul and Barnabas went to another Antioch,
Antioch in Pisidia.
Out of jealousy, the local Jewish leaders there stopped Paul from preaching to
the Jewish community. Paul and Barnabas then turned their attention to non-Jewish
people, and so the word of the Lord spread through the whole countryside.
But the Jewish leaders kept up their campaign,
and had Paul and Barnabas expelled from Pisidia.
Jesus, please don't let Gospel workers be

Luke
19.28-40: When Jesus came near to Jerusalem, he
sent two disciples to a nearby village to get a donkey colt which no one
had ever ridden. Jesus sat on the colt and began the descent
from the Mount of Olives down the hill to Jerusalem. The disciples spread their clothes on
the road,
and joyfully praised God for all the miracles they had seen. They cried
out "Blessings on the King who comes in
the name of the Lord!" Some religious leaders told Jesus to stop the
disciples from calling out. Jesus replied "If these keep silence, the
stones will cry out".
Jesus, you who came in the name of the Lord,
we praise and love you

Reflection on the above readings: The message of God's endless great love (Psalm 136), with its corollary of the need to live honestly and justly (Samuel) is something about which we cannot keep silent (Gospel), even if we suffer persecution for proclaiming it (Acts)

Parish, everyone received a lovely statue of St Paul. Mine was immediately put
in a prominent place near the counter of MercyHK's 2nd hand shop at 191 Temple
Street (since shop is in St Paul's Parish ... good to ask Paul's help) ....
attached by much Blue Tak in case someone tries to buy him/it!
