Samuel 8-9: Wherever David went, the Lord gave him success
and victory. David showed kindness to Saul's
family.
Meribbaal, son of Jonathan and grandson of Saul
was crippled in both feet.
David restored Saul's property to Meribbaal
and arranged for Meribbaal to eat at the royal table each day.
Lord, help us show kindness to
people who treat us badly

Acts
18.5-11:
In Corinth, Paul was rejected by the Jews, so
he spent his time preaching to non-Jewish people. Many Corinthians became
believers and were baptized. One night the Lord spoke to Paul in a vision:
"Do not be afraid to speak out, nor allow yourself to be silenced. I
am with you". So Paul stayed in Corinth for 18 months preaching the word
of God
Jesus, give Christians more courage to

Luke
23.39-43:
One of the criminals hanging on a cross mockingly

"Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us as well". But the other criminal rebuked the first one
and said "We are paying the penalty for our crimes. But this man has
done nothing wrong". "Jesus", he said, "remember me
when you come into your kingdom". Jesus replied "I promise you, this day
you will be with me in Paradise"
Jesus, remember me when you come into your
kingdom

Samuel 7:
After David settled into his palace and the
land enjoyed peace,
David thought about building a temple for the Lord.
Then through the prophet Nathan the Lord told David:
" I will establish your dynasty for ever.
But it will be your son, not yourself,
who will build a temple for me."
David praised God:
"Who am I, Lord, and what is my House,
that you have helped me so much
and promised me so much?
May my House continue in your presence for
ever.
May you bless my House forever."

5: At the start of this day I pray to you, O
Lord, my King and my God. I offer you my prayer and ask for your
help. Through the greatness of your love, I have
access to your friendship. I bow down in reverence and worship. Lead me, Lord, in the way you want me to go.
It is you, Lord, who bless good people.
You surround them with favors, as with a shield.
Lord, I adore you as my Creator

Acts
18.1-4: Paul left Athens and went to the city of
Corinth. He met a Jewish couple who had recently left Italy when the
Emperor Claudius expelled all Jews from Rome. The couple were tentmakers, like Paul
himself.
Paul stayed with them and they worked together. Each Sabbath Paul preached in the prayer
halls,
trying to convert Jews as well as non-Jewish people
Jesus, thank you for the example of Paul who
worked to support himself and didn't live off others

Luke
23.33-38: When they reached the place called The Skull,
they crucified Jesus there, and the two criminals also, one on his right,
the other on his left. Above his head was placed a sign
"This is the King of the Jews". Jesus prayed "Father, forgive them. They
do not know what they are doing". The leaders made fun of him "He saved
others, let him save himself if he is the Christ of God". The soldiers mocked him too "If you are
the king of the Jews, save yourself"
Jesus, you forgave those who mocked you and
crucified you. I forgive anyone who has been unkind to me

Reflection on the above readings: Yesterday I was reading a book which said that our prayers are like a bucket. Our "bucket" sometimes has a whole in it. The whole is called unforgiveness .... which is why we constantly need to remember the greatest act of forgiveness in human history ... in today's Gospel

c.f. readings for Sunday 17
1 Kings 3: The
Lord appeared to King Solomon in a dream and said "Ask me for anything
you'd like." Solomon asked for
wisdom: "Give your servant a heart to understand how to discern
between good and evil." God replied: "I now give you a heart full of
wisdom, wisdom greater than anyone else has ever had. And I also give you what
you did not ask for: riches and glory and long life."
Dear Lord, please give me more wisdom for my
life
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
119: They are happy who follow God's word,
those who seek God with all their hearts. How can young people avoid evil? By
seeking you and obeying you, Lord. Open my eyes, Lord, that I may
understand the beauty of your word. Lord, when I'm worried or in trouble, your
word revives me and gives me strength. Lord,
keep my eyes from what is false. Bend my heart to your word and not to love of
gain. The word from your mouth means more to me than silver and gold. The
unfolding of your word gives light and teaches simple people.
Lord, thank you for your word which gives peace to our hearts

Romans
8.26-29: When we are not sure
of what to say in prayer, we ask the Spirit to pray in us. We
know that by turning everything to their good, God blesses everyone who loves
him. God the Father wants us to become living images of his Son, so that
his Son will be the eldest of many brothers and sisters.
Jesus, brother Jesus, please help me to be more like you

Matthew
13: Jesus said to the people: The kingdom
of heaven is like a mustard seed.
It's the smallest of all seeds. But it becomes a big bush, then a big tree that
the birds live in. The kingdom of heaven is like yeast
which leavens flour. The kingdom of heaven is like treasure
in a field. Someone finds it, then sells all they have to buy the field.
The kingdom of heaven is like a fishing
net that catches all sorts of fish. Good fish are put in a basket.
Useless fish are thrown away. So at the end of time, bad people will be thrown
into hell.
Jesus, may your kingdom come, your will be done

Yesterday, I think, was the hottest day so far this year - 34 degrees (that's 93.2 fahrenheit). I went to the High Court in the morning for the appeal application of a man from Latin America, then to nearby McD's for lunch, then to chapel in Central for a bit of prayer .... the more our problems increase (Covid-19, HK's political situation, China-US relations), the more we need prayer to keep going through it all. After chapel I went to the Open University of HK to enrol a prisoner .... and boy, was it hot walking there from Ho Man Tin MTR station.

John for seeking honor. So Jesus said to them all
"In most places, people in power like to dominate and control others. But
this is not to be your way of exercising authority. You
must exercise authority by serving others, not dominating them, just as I
came not to be served, but to serve, and to give my life as a ransom for the

Acts 17.16-28: In Athens, Paul was sad see so much idol worship.

Good news from Tanzania:
last week at Lo Wu women's prison, welfare staff asked me to talk with a woman
from Tanzania who was quite distraught after just hearing in a phone call to her
family that her teenage son had lost the use of both legs. The next day I sent a message to a
kind Jesuit priest I know in the woman's city, and he checked with the family
and yesterday sent good news: the son has now fully recovered ..... which news I
emailed to welfare .... and posted to the woman. God is Good!

c.f. readings for Feast of Mary Magdalene
Song of Songs 3.1-4: The
bride says: On
my bed, at night, I sought him
whom my heart loves. I sought but did not find him. So I will rise and
go through the City; in the streets and in the squares, I will seek him whom
my heart loves. I sought, but did not find him. The watchmen came upon me on
their rounds in the City: "Have you seen him whom my heart loves?"
Scarcely had I passed them, when I found him whom my heart loves.
Jesus, please increase my love for you, my longing
for you.
My recording of this reading![]()

Psalm 63: O
God, you are my God, for
you I long. My body and soul thirst for you, like a dry, weary land
without water. Your love is better than life, my lips will speak your praise.
On my bed I remember you. On you I muse through the night.
Lord, our hearts are restless, until they rest in you

Corinthians 5.14-19: The
love of Christ is like a tsunami. It overwhelms
us and sweeps us away when we remember how Jesus
died for everyone. God, through Christ, has repaired his friendship with
humanity. We must spread the news of this reconciliation.
"And when I think, that God his Son not
sparing, sent him to die, I scarce can take it in"
- from "How Great Thou Art"
Recording ![]()

John 20.11-18: Peter
and John went home. Mary
Magdalene remained at the tomb, crying. When she looked inside the
tomb, she saw two angels in white. She also saw Jesus standing there, though
she did not recognize him. Jesus said "Woman, why are you crying?".
Mary thought he was the gardener so she said to him "If you have taken
him away, tell me where you have put him". Jesus said "Mary"
and she recognized him. Jesus then said "I will ascend to my
Father". Mary went and told the disciples all she had seen and heard.
Jesus, please bless people who are crying at
funerals today. May awareness of your presence bring them peace and
strength for the days ahead
Recording ![]()

Reflection on the above readings:
Apostles' "right brain" said "no use staying at empty tomb. Can't do anything. Useless to stay". Mary Magdalene's feminine intuition said "Stay. Not sure why. But it's best to stay".
