How one UK aged home avoided Covid-19. A lesson for all places. Manager did what so many govt leaders and populations failed to do: he took Covid-19 seriously.

New Zealand looks on in horror at Melbourne Covid-19 crisis  (....lessons here for all places ...)

HK people, like people in most parts of Asia, are naturally inclined to co-operate with reasonable laws ... like wearing a mask. Yesterday on the streets I saw only one person not wearing a mask ... a man from another continent

Readings are from Simple Bible

1 Kings 1: When King David was very old and near the end of his life, Absalom's brother Adonijah plotted to become king. The prophet Nathan therefore advised Bathsheba to go to David and remind him that he had promised to let Bathsheba's son Solomon become king. David then summoned the priests and royal guards and ordered them and Nathan to anoint Solomon as king.
Dear God, please give the world good leaders

Psalm 17-18: Lord,  when trouble breaks out on every side, please protect and help me. For you are my strength, my rock, my fortress, my savior. I love you, Lord who save me because you love me. Lord, you are my lamp who lightens my life. I will praise you among the nations.
Lord, you are worthy of all praise

Listen

Acts 20.7-12: In the city of Troas Paul and his group joined the local believers for the Breaking of Bread one Saturday night. Paul's sermon went on till the middle of the night. As Paul went on and on, a young man who was sitting on the window-sill, went to sleep and fell to the ground three floors below. He was dead when they picked him up. Paul went down to the boy and prayed over him. The boy came back to life. Paul kept on talking till dawn. That same day he left Troas
Jesus, is it ok if I pray that someone who has died will come back to life?

Luke 24.36-49: The disciples were still talking about what had happened when suddenly Jesus himself stood among them. At first they were terrified and thought they were seeing a ghost. But he said "Look at my hands and feet. Yes, it is I indeed. Touch me and see for yourselves. A ghost has no flesh and bones as you can see I have". Their fear turned to joy but they still couldn't believe what they were seeing. So he asked them for something to eat, and they gave him some grilled fish which he ate in front of them. Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, and he said "So you see how it is written that the Christ would suffer, and on the third day rise from the dead. And that in his name repentance for the forgiveness of sins would be preached to all the nations. Soon I will send down to you what the Father promised (the Holy Spirit). Stay in Jerusalem until you are clothed with this power from on high"
Jesus,  increase my faith in your resurrection, and open my mind to  understand the Bible better

2 Samuel 16-24: When David was living in exile, some people helped him, some people insulted him. To insult his father and to claim the kingship Absalom publicly had sex with his father's concubines. Gradually David was able to re-build his army and his army defeated Absalom's soldiers in battle. In that battle, Absalom died and David mourned his death for a long time. Eventually David was able to become king of all Israel again.
Dear God, may Israel be a land of peace

Psalm 16:
Please protect me, Lord, I take refuge in you. You are the only source of all true happiness. I bless you, Lord, who guide and lead me. Even at night you direct my heart. And so my heart rejoices, my soul is glad. My body shall rest in safety now and always. You will show me the path of life, the fullness of joy in your presence, at your right hand, happiness for ever.
Thank you, Lord, for the little joys you give us each day .... and the big joy you've prepared for us in Heaven

Acts 19-20In Ephesus there was a silversmith who employed many craftsmen making shrines of the local idol, Diana. The silversmith called a meeting of the city's silversmiths and said to them "Not just here in Ephesus, but in many parts of the region, this man Paul has converted many people with his argument that gods made by hand are not gods at all. This is a threat to our trade". A mob was formed and dragged two of Paul's companions to a local theatre. The town clerk eventually calmed the mob and dismissed them. By now Paul had decided to leave Ephesus. He went to Greece and spent three months there

Luke 24.13-35: That same day, two of Jesus' disciples were on their way from Jerusalem to the village of Emmaus, about 7 km from Jerusalem. As they talked about all that had happened, Jesus himself joined them as they walked along. But they did not recognize him. When Jesus asked them what they were talking about, they said "About Jesus of Nazareth, and how our leaders had him crucified. And how some women in our group went to Jesus' tomb and were told by angels that he was alive". Jesus then explained the Scripture passages which predicted his suffering and resurrection. Jesus joined the two men for an evening meal. During the meal, he blessed  some bread and gave it to them. They then recognized him. But he immediately vanished from their sight. They said to each other "Did not our hearts burn within us as he talked to us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us?" Straight away they returned to Jerusalem where the eleven apostles said to them "Yes, it is true. The Lord has risen". Then they told their story of what had happened on the road, and how they had recognized Jesus at the breaking of bread

The top 3 Covid-19 countries are the US, Brazil and Mexico. Their presidents not only failed to take Covid-19 seriously but even delayed/hindered efforts by the medical profession to tackle the virus. What a difference a leader makes! Yesterday I watched this Youtube on leadership. It says there are 2 basic rules for good leadership. (And I would add a third rule for the speaker: when you give a Ted Talk, please speak clearly ... at times I could not understand what you were saying!)

Isaiah 54-55: Though the mountains may fall and the hills turn to dust, the love of the Lord will never cease. O come to the water, all you are thirsty, though you have no money, come. Why spend your money on what is useless, your wages on what fails to satisfy? Seek the Lord while he is to be found. Call to him while he is near.
Lord,  please help us give more time to things that are important ....and less time to things that are not so important

My recording of this reading

Psalm 144: Blessed be the Lord, my rock, who gives me strength for every situation. He is my love, my fortress. He is my stronghold, my savior. To you, O God, will I sing a new song, you who so often rescued David your servant. Happy the people whose God is the Lord. Please continue to bless your people, Lord. Let our sons flourish like saplings grown tall and strong from their youth; our daughters graceful as columns, adorned as though for a palace. Let our crops and stock be blessed. May there be no sound of weeping on our streets.
Lord, please help us love and honor you every day. Don't let us ever forget your love

Romans 8.35-39: Nothing can separate us from the love of Jesus, even if we are in big trouble of any kind. By the power of Jesus who loves us, we can get through any trouble

Matthew 14.13-21Once after Jesus had been healing and teaching many people all afternoon,  his disciples said to him "It's getting late and the people need to go and eat". Jesus replied "They don't need to go. You feed them". The disciples said "We have only 5 loaves and 2 fish". Jesus got the people to sit on the grass. There were about 20,000 of them. Then he blessed the loaves and fish. He handed the loaves and fish to his disciples. His disciples gave them to the crowd. Everyone had plenty to eat.
They even had 12 baskets of leftovers.

2 Samuel 14-15: When David had finished his time of mourning for Amnon, he allowed Absalom to return to Jerusalem. Only after two years did David agree to meet Absalom. He met him and pardoned him. But as time went on Absalom started to plot against David. Absalom  gathered enough supporters to overthrow David. David found out about the plot and fled from Jerusalem. David was very sad and prayed to God that someday he could return to Jerusalem.

Psalm 14-15:
So many people live and act as if God doesn't exist. Some foolish people even say there is no God. So many people have left the way of justice and truth. So many people follow the way of falsehood. Lord, help us to live as we should.
Help us not to slander, help us not to wrong others.

Acts 19.11-20: So remarkable were the miracles worked by God through Paul, that even handkerchiefs which had touched him, were taken to the sick, and they were healed and evil spirits came out of them. Some believers admitted how they had practised magic. They collected their expensive books on magic and burnt them in public. Things like these helped the word of the Lord to continue spreading

Luke 24.1-11: On Sunday morning, at daybreak, the women went to the tomb with the spices they had prepared. They found that the large stone which had been put at the tomb's entrance had been rolled away. They entered the tomb and found that the body of Jesus was not there. Suddenly two men in brilliant clothes appeared at their side. The men said to them "Why look among the dead for someone who is alive? He is not here. He has risen, just as he said he would". The women told all this to the eleven apostles. But the apostles did not believe them

2 Samuel 13: David had many wives and concubines. One of his sons, Amnon, fell in love with his step-sister Tamar and raped her. King David was very angry about this but did not punish Amnon, since he loved him. Amnon was his first-born son. But another son, Absalom, Tamar's full brother, hated Amnon and killed him. The women from Galilee who had come to Jerusalem with Jesus went with Joseph to the tomb. Then they left to prepare burial spices and ointments. They planned to put these on Jesus' body after the Saturday Sabbath day of rest

2 Samuel 12The Lord sent the prophet Nathan to David. Nathan said: "Why did you do what is displeasing to the Lord?" David replied: "I have sinned against the Lord." Nathan said: "The Lord forgives you, but because of your sin, the child will die." After the child died, Bathsheba conceived another son by David, whom she named Solomon. The Lord specially blessed Solomon.

I was at the High Court yesterday morning for two cases, then went to the Open University of HK to enrol a prisoner, then after lunch and rest and some office work at home I went to the church and then to the Alhambra Building in Yau Ma Tei to pay the monthly rent for 13 rooms for homeless people. God bless the kind friends who provided MercyHK with the HK$63,000 for this! The rent for 4 other rooms is due on the 21st of the month.

If Covid-19 is causing increased homelessness in a wealthy place like HK then I shudder to think what is happening in poor countries. Maybe we can do something to help some poor part of Africa?

2 Samuel 10-11: The Ammonites went to war with the Israelites, but David led the Israelites to victory. During a further war with the Ammonites, David stayed in Jerusalem and did not go to the battle. While in Jerusalem, he made love to Bathsheba the wife of Uriah who conceived and sent word to David, "I am with child." David recalled Uriah to Jerusalem and tried to get him to sleep with his wife. But Uriah loyally observed the custom of the time and refrained from marital relations since he was a soldier at war. David then arranged for Uriah to be killed in battle by having him stationed in a defenceless position. After a time of mourning for Uriah, Bathsheba became David's wife and bore him a son. The Lord was displeased with David.
Dear God, help us not to displease you

Psalm 7: Lord God, I take refuge in you. Please rescue me from people who are trying to hurt me. Lord, please stop bad people from doing bad things. Please help good people to keep on doing good things. Lord, I will sing to you and thank you for your goodness to me.
Lord, please help me to avoid evil and to do good

Luke 10.38-42 (for Feast of St Martha): Jesus came to a village, and a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. She had a sister called Mary, who sat down at the Lord's feet and listened to him speaking. Now Martha who was distracted with all the serving said, "Lord, do you not care that my sister is leaving me to do the serving all by myself? Please tell her to help me." But the Lord answered: "Martha, Martha," he said "you worry and fret about so many things, and yet few are needed, indeed only one. It is Mary who has chosen the better part; it is not to be taken from her."
 Recording

John 11.1-44 (for Feast of St Martha)Lazarus and his sisters Mary and Martha lived in the village of Bethany. When Lazarus became very sick, the sisters sent a message to Jesus "Lord, your dear friend is very sick". By the time Jesus and his disciples arrived in Bethany, Lazarus was dead and buried for 4 days. Martha said to Jesus "If you had been here, my brother would not have died". Jesus replied "I am the resurrection and the life. If anyone believes in me, he will have life after death". Jesus said to Mary and Martha "Where have you put him?"  Jesus cried as he went to the tomb. The tomb was a cave with a stone at the entrance. Jesus said "Take the stone away". Then he called out in a loud voice "Lazarus, come out!" The dead man came out, wrapped in burial clothes. Jesus said "Unwrap him and let him go free".
Jesus, you are the Resurrection and the Life. Please give eternal life to my friend (....name...) who died recently
