The Book Blog:   4 readings + recordings
Comments welcome here
Readings are from Simple Bible

1 Kings 8-9: When the temple was finished, Solomon shifted the Sacred Chest to the temple. After the Chest was placed in the temple, the glorious cloud of the Lord filled the temple. Solomon then praised God and blessed the people. Solomon prayed that the temple would be a place of blessings. Solomon also prayed that all the peoples of the world would come to know the Lord from whom all life comes. The Lord again appeared to Solomon and said: "I will be near to all who enter the temple you have built."
Dear God, may all temples and churches in the world be places where people praise and love you

My recording of this reading

Psalms 24-26: The Lord's is the earth and all its peoples. It is the Lord who is Creator of the universe. May all hearts open their doors to the Lord. Let him enter, the king of glory. Lord I hope in you all the day long. Forgive my sins and help me walk in your truth.
God my savior, teach me your way of truth

Listen

Acts 21.15-40: In Jerusalem Paul gave a report to James and other Christian leaders of all that God had done for non-Jews through his ministry. But Paul was soon seen by Jews from where he had traveled. He was dragged out of the Temple and beaten by a wild crowd. The beating was stopped by a Roman captain who had Paul bound with chains. The crowd was calling out for Paul to be killed. Paul asked for permission to speak to the crowd and the captain  agreed. Paul then spoke to the crowd in Hebrew
Jesus, please protect Christians who live in dangerous places

Listen

John 2.1-11: Jesus, his mother and his disciples were guests at a wedding at Cana in Galilee. The wine ran out, so Jesus' mother said to him "They have no wine". Jesus replied "Woman, my time for doing special things has not yet come". His mother said to the servants "Do whatever he tells you". There were 6 big containers there, used for holding water. Each could hold about 35 liters. Jesus said to the servants "Fill the containers with water" and they filled them up. Jesus then said "take some out and give it to the man in charge of the banquet".  When the man tasted the water, it had turned to wine. The man called the bridegroom and said "You have kept the best wine until now". This was the first public miracle done by Jesus
Jesus,  help me to do whatever you tell me to do

Listen

Reflection on the above readings: Without Mary's request, Jesus would not have changed water into wine. So we can say that our prayer requests to Jesus can generate more of his help for other people. ... just as parents/teachers respond to the reasonable requests of their children/students. Our prayers for any person, place or issue can make a difference.

Mon Aug 10

Two nights ago a homeless man was given a bed at the Alhambra Building in Yau Ma Tei .... as was a homeless woman yesterday afternoon. In cricket terms that makes 18 for 31 (18 rooms for 31 people) ... being rented by MercyHK. The numbers fluctuate because some people are gradually able to find their own accommodation .... and because ... in the case of a tiny few ....people are asked to leave by landlords for not caring enough about hygiene etc.

Readings are from Simple Bible

1 Kings 6-7: Solomon built the temple of the Lord with finest wood and many precious materials. The temple took 7 years to build. Solomon also built a palace for himself. This took 13 years to build.
Dear God, may all temples and churches in the world be places of prayer and peace

My recording of this reading

Psalm 23:
The Lord is my shepherd, there is nothing I shall want. Fresh and green are the pastures where he gives me repose.
Near restful waters he leads me, to revive my drooping spirit. He guides me along the right path. He is true to his name. If I should walk in the valley of darkness no evil would I fear. You are there with your crook and your staff; with these you give me comfort. You have prepared a banquet for me in the sight of my foes. My head you have anointed with oil. My cup is  overflowing. Surely goodness and kindness shall follow me all the days of my life. In the Lord's own house shall I dwell for ever and ever.

Thank you, Lord, for being my good shepherd

Listen

Acts 21.1-14: Our sea voyage took us to the city of Caesarea. A prophet there took Paul's belt and used it to tie up his own feet and hands, as a sign of what would happen to Paul in Jerusalem. Everyone implored Paul not to go to Jerusalem. Paul replied "I am ready not only to be tied up, but even to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus". And so we packed up and headed for Jerusalem
Jesus, please give me a bit of Paul's courage

Listen

John 1.35-51: John the Baptist told his disciples Andrew and John that Jesus was the Chosen One of God. Andrew and John then followed Jesus. Andrew took his brother Simon to Jesus. Jesus changed Simon's name to Peter, and Peter followed Jesus. Jesus met  Philip and said to him "Follow me".  Philip called one more man, Nathanael (Bartholomew) and said to him "we have found the one Moses and the prophets wrote about. He is Jesus, son of Joseph, from Nazareth"
Jesus, please help me introduce more people to know and love you

Listen

Reflection on the above readings: It's interesting how Psalm 23 (one of the most beautiful and most encouraging psalms) comes straight after Psalm 22 ... since 3 follows 2 ... one of the most distressful psalms. Maybe order of arrangement is not historical ... but just maybe David experienced great consolation one day thinking about his sheep and The Shepherd ... a day after some terrible experience. Bottom line ....when we are having a Psalm 22 day, try reading/praying Psalm 23!

-------------------------

In today's Gospel Jesus gives Simon a new name "Peter" (meaning "rock"). In I Peter 2. 4, Peter describes Jesus as "the living stone".

c.f. readings for Sunday 19

1 Kings 19: Elijah once spent a night in a cave. The Lord then told him to stand at the mouth of the cave. Then there was a mighty wind that shattered trees and rocks. But the Lord was not in the wind. Then there was an earthquake. But the  Lord was not in the earthquake. Then there was a gentle breeze. And the Lord was in the breeze. Not long after this Elijah called Elisha to become his follower.
Dear Lord, please help us be aware of your presence in our lives

My recording of this reading

Psalm 85: I will hear what the Lord God has to say, a voice that speaks of peace. Peace for his people and his friends and those who turn to him in their hearts. His help is near for those who love him and his glory will dwell in our land. Mercy and faithfulness have met. Justice and peace have embraced. Faithfulness shall spring from the earth and justice shall look down from heaven. The Lord will make us prosper and our earth shall yield its fruit. Justice shall march before him
and peace shall follow his steps

Lord, please give more peace to our world

Recording

Romans 9.1-5: There is a great sorrow in my heart. It's with me day and night. It's the situation of the Jewish people, how they will not accept the Anointed One. I am willing to do anything to help them accept Jesus. I am willing to undergo the greatest suffering if that would help them believe. They are my nation, my family. They have been so blessed by God. From their flesh and blood came Christ, who is God.
Jesus, God-made-flesh, I pray with Paul that the Jewish people will believe in you
 Recording

Matthew 14.22-33: After feeding the crowd with 5 loaves and 2 fish, Jesus told his disciples to go by boat across the nearby lake. Jesus stayed to send the crowds away. Then he went up into the hills to pray. When darkness came, the boat was far from land, but it was battling large waves caused by a strong head-wind. Jesus then walked on the water towards the boat. He called out to his disciples "Courage. It is I. Don't be afraid." Peter answered "Lord, if it is you, tell me to walk on the water to you."  Jesus said "Come". Peter then started walking on the water, but he became afraid and began to sink. "Lord, save me" he called out. Jesus took him by the hand and helped him to keep walking on the water. "Man of little faith, why did you doubt?" asked Jesus. As they got into the boat, the wind stopped. The men in the boat bowed to Jesus and said "You really are the Son of God".
Jesus, please help me not to lose faith in you

 Recording

 Reflection on the above readings:

As long as Peter focused on Jesus, he was ok. But as soon as he focused on the wind and waves....trouble. Same with us - especially at wind and wave times - the more we can focus on Jesus, the more calmly and clearly and wisely and safely will be our footsteps...even on water!

Readings are from Simple Bible

1 Kings 4-5: Solomon enjoyed peace with all his neighbouring countries. He was blessed by God with great wisdom and understanding. He composed 3,000 proverbs and 1,000 songs. People from all nations went to hear Solomon's wisdom. Solomon made preparations for building a temple for the Lord. Hiram, king of Tyre, made a treaty with Solomon. Hiram provided wood for building the temple.
Dear God, please help all nations live peacefully with each other

My recording of this reading

Psalm 22: (Many things in this psalm happened to Jesus when he was put to death. This psalm prophesizes Jesus' death):
My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? I call to you for help, but day and night you give no reply.
I am a worm and not a man. Everyone who sees me makes fun of me. They taunt me: "He trusted in the Lord, why doesn't the Lord help him?" Like water I am poured out, my bones no longer connected. My throat is parched, my tongue sticks to my jaws. Many evil people attack me. They make holes in my hands and my feet. They await my death. They divide my clothing among them, they throw a dice for my robe. Yet I know Lord, that  you are good and holy. I know how you heard the cries of our ancestors and you helped them. It was you who took me from the womb and entrusted me to my mother's breast. To you I was committed from my birth, from my mother's womb you have been my God. Lord, I trust in you even now. I trust you will not scorn my prayer. Even now I praise you as my Creator. May all the nations know and worship you.
Lord, please help people who are in big trouble right now, especially people whose lives are in danger

Listen

Acts 20.28-38: Paul continued "You elders are the leaders of the Church of God. Be on your guard against bad leaders trying to mislead people. Remember my example. I never asked anyone for money or clothes. You know how my work as a tentmaker earned enough to support my companions and me. Remember Jesus' words There is more happiness in giving than in receiving". When he finished speaking, he knelt down with them and prayed. Then they took him to the ship
Jesus, please help Gospel workers imitate Paul

Listen

John 1: 5, 19-34 John the Baptist was sent by God as a witness to the people about the presence of the Word among them. When religious leaders asked John "Who are you?", he replied "I am, as the prophet Isaiah prophesied, a voice crying out: make a straight way for the Lord". When Jesus came to the river Jordan where John was baptizing, John said "Look, there is the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. He is far more important than I am, because he existed (as the Word) before I was born. I saw the Holy Spirit come down on him like a dove. He will baptize people with the Holy Spirit.  He is the Chosen One of God"
Jesus, lamb of God, Chosen One of God, please baptize me with the Holy Spirit

Listen

Reflection on the above readings: John the Baptist did not call Jesus the messenger of God or the prophet of God or the priest of God ... but ... the lamb of God ... indicating sacrifice ... since just as the blood of a lamb once rescued the Hebrews from Egypt so Jesus' blood rescues us from all sorts of Egypts

1 Kings 3: The Lord appeared to King Solomon in a dream and said "Ask me for anything you'd like." Solomon asked for wisdom: "Give your servant a heart to understand how to discern between good and evil." God replied: "I now give you a heart full of wisdom, wisdom greater than anyone else has ever had. And I also give you what you did not ask for: riches and glory and long life." Not long after this, two prostitutes came for judgement: they lived in the same house and both had given birth to a son, but one of the babies died during the night. The mother of the dead baby changed babies during the same night and claimed that the living baby was hers. Solomon  asked for a sword to cut the living baby in two and give half to each mother. The lying woman agreed, but the real mother said "No. Don't kill the baby. Give it to the other woman." Solomon then knew the real mother was telling the truth and gave the baby to her. For wisdom such as this, Solomon's reputation spread far.
Dear Lord, please give me more wisdom for my life

My recording of this reading

Psalm 20-21: May the Lord protect and help you, may he give you your heart's desire and fulfil every one of your plans. Some trust in chariots or horses, but we trust in the Lord
Lord, may our plans and hopes be acceptable to you. Please bless our plans

Listen

Acts 20.22-24: Paul continued "Now you see me a prisoner already in spirit. I am on my way to Jerusalem, and have no idea what will happen to me there. The Holy Spirit has made it clear that imprisonment and persecution await me there. But life to me is not a thing to waste words on. What matters is that when I finish my race, I have carried out the mission the Lord Jesus gave me - to bear witness to the Good News of God's grace"
Jesus, please help me live a worthwhile life

Listen

John 1.1-14: From all eternity the Word existed. The Word was with God the Father. The Word was God the Son. The Word was the source of life for all creatures. The Word became a man, and lived among us. We saw his glory, full of grace and truth. Many people did not recognize and did not accept the Word. But to everyone who did accept him, he gave power to become children of God
Jesus, please help me understand how you are the Word-made-flesh

Listen

Reflection on the above Bible readings: Today's Gospel clearly states the divinity of Jesus. But some groups like the Jehovah's Witnesses change the text to deny the divinity of Jesus. "When you don't agree with something in the Bible, change the Bible's words to agree with you".

c.f. readings for Feast of the Transfiguration

Daniel 7: Once when Daniel was asleep, he had a vision of heaven: "Thrones were put in place and one of great age took his seat. His robe was white as snow, his hair as pure as wool. A thousand thousand waited on him, ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him. Then coming on the clouds of heaven was one like a son of man. On him was conferred  glory and kingship, and people of all nations became his servants. His kingship is eternal. His empire will never be destroyed."
Jesus, please help me understand that you are the "Son of Man" whose kingship is eternal

My recording of this reading

Psalm 97: The Lord is king, let earth rejoice, the many coastlands be glad. Cloud and darkness are his robes. His throne is justice and goodness. The skies proclaim his goodness. All peoples see his glory. Let those who serve idols be ashamed. Let all creation worship  the Creator. Light shines forth for good people. and joy for the upright of heart. Rejoice in the Lord, all good people. Give glory to his holy name.
Lord, you indeed are God of the universe

Recording

2 Peter 1.12-18: As long as I am in this passing world, my duty is to keep on reminding you of the truths we hold dear. Writing this letter is one way of making sure that after my departure you will still have a way of recalling the truths we hold dear. These truths are not cleverly invented myths. I myself saw the majesty of our Lord Jesus Christ. He was honored and glorified by God the Father,  when the Sublime Glory himself spoke to him and said "This is my Son, the Beloved. He enjoys my favor". I heard this myself, spoken from heaven, when I was with Jesus on the holy mountain.
Jesus, Beloved Son, may more and more people accept the truth of your Good News

 Recording

Matthew 17.1-8: One day Jesus took his disciples Peter, James and John up a high mountain. On the mountain Jesus' whole appearance changed. His face shone like the sun. His clothes were as white as snow. The  prophets Moses and Elijah appeared and spoke with him. Peter said to Jesus "Lord, how good it is for us to be here!" Then a bright cloud covered them with its shadow. From the cloud came a voice: "This is my Son, the Beloved. Listen to him." The disciples bowed to the ground. When they got up, they saw only Jesus in his normal appearance.
Jesus, Beloved Son of God, how good it is to spend time with you in prayer

And despite stalls and shops around it not opening or even closing permanently because of the economic downturn, our little MercyHK 2nd hand shop at 191 Temple Street continues to go against the trend ..... sales yesterday HK$2,100.  Jesus, please bless everyone working/helping at the shop ... and our customers ... and donors of items! Readings are from Simple Bible

1 Kings 2: Before King David died, he encouraged his son Solomon to love the Lord with all his heart and soul. Solomon executed his main enemies and rivals, including Adonijah who had again plotted to become king. Solomon then was secure and safe as king.
Dear God, thank you for the life of David who, despite his faults, loved you with all his heart

My recording of this reading

Psalm 19 (sun + law = the "sun-in-law" psalm): The heavens proclaim the glory of God, the starry skies are the work of his hands. The stars can't speak, but they are God's handwriting. The sun is God's love shining on the whole world. The universe is a masterpiece, and so is God's law which shines in our hearts. The precepts of the Lord enlighten our lives each day. The law of the Lord gives joy and wisdom to our hearts. The decrees of the Lord are to be desired more than gold, they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb. But  often we are unaware of our errors. Lord, please protect us from making mistakes.
Lord, may the words of my mouth and the thoughts of my heart  be pleasing to you

Listen

Acts 20.17-21: Paul's journey took him to Meletus where he met the elders of the church from Ephesus. He said to them. "You know what my way of life has been from the first day I arrived among you. I have served the Lord in all humility, facing all the sorrows and trials that came to me through the plots of the Jews. I have not hesitated to do anything that would be helpful to. you. I have preached to you and instructed you, both in public and in your homes, urging everyone to believe in our Lord Jesus"
Jesus, please help me be a bit more like Saint Paul

Listen

Luke 24.50-53: Jesus then took his disciples out of Jerusalem to the village of Bethany. Lifting up his hands, he blessed them.
As he blessed them, he was carried up to heaven. They worshipped him, then went back to Jerusalem full of joy. They were continually in the Temple praising God

Jesus, thank you for the Gospel of Luke. Please increase my faith in you as the One who came down from heaven, and went back to heaven

  Listen

Reflection on the above readings: The above final story from Luke's Gospel finishes in the same place where his very first story in chapter one took place: The Temple in Jerusalem
