As I read about the situation in places like like
Syria, Yemen and Africa, I ask myself: Is there anything we in HK can/should do
to help other parts of the world in deep crisis?
I
work as a medic in Syria, where an unreported Covid-19 crisis is unfolding
Jesus, please move the hearts of the
nations using Yemen as a place for proxy warfare .... to stop. To stop using
religion as an excuse for war. To stop making money by arms sales

2 Kings
4: A poor widow whose husband had been a
prophet asked Elisha for help when a creditor demanded her two sons
as slaves. All she had was a small pot of oil, not enough
to pay her debts.
Elisha told her to get many jars,
and start pouring oil from the pot into the jars. As she and her sons did this,
the oil did not
run out.
Elisha told her to sell the oil to pay off her debts. At another time Elisha brought back to
life a dead child. He also once brought about a miraculous
multiplication of bread.Dear
God, you once worked
miracles by the prayers of Elisha.
Please let miracles be done in our day.
My
recording of this reading
Psalm 40: I waited, I waited for the Lord and he
stooped down to me.
He heard my cry. He saved me from
distress.
He put fresh hope into my heart. How many, O Lord my God, are the times you
have helped me.
They are too many for me to describe. My God, in the depth of my heart I delight in
your law.
You do not want external offerings.
You want my heart. Lord, I offer you my heart, my
love. You deserve all my love
Listen

Acts
27.39-44:
The next day they could see land: a bay with a beach. They tried to reach the beach, but the ship ran aground on a
reef and began to break up. The soldiers wanted to kill the prisoners to
stop them from escaping, but Julius would not allow this.
Some people swam. Some used pieces of wreckage. All of them got to shore
safely
Jesus, help people in danger of
shipwreck today
Listen

John
5.36-46:
Jesus said to the religious leaders "The
healing and teaching my Father has given me to do,
testify that the Father sent me. You study the Scriptures, realizing that in
them there is the message of life. Now these same Scriptures focus on me,
and yet you refuse to come to me for life. If you really believe what Moses wrote, you
would believe in me, since it was I that he was writing about"
Jesus, please help me understand how
everything in the Bible is related to you. Help me understand that
"ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of you"
Listen

Reflection on the above readings: It was the great Bible translator Saint Jerome who said "Ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of Christ". Another author has said that the Bible is a love letter from God to every human person. To refuse to read it is ....?

2 Kings
2-3:
The Lord revealed to Elisha and other
prophets
that Elijah would be taken up to heaven in a whirlwind.
Elisha said to Elijah
"Let me inherit a double share of your spirit."
Then a chariot of fire appeared with horses of fire,
and Elijah went up to heaven in a
whirlwind.
The spirit of Elijah then came to rest on Elisha
and he began to do miracles by the power of the Lord.
Holy Spirit of God, please
increase your influence in my life
My
recording of this reading

Psalms 38-39: O Lord, please forgive my sins and heal me.
Heal my body which is sick because of my sins. Protect me, Lord, from those who gloat over me
now that I am brought low and unable to help myself. Lord, you have shown me how short a time I
have on earth.
Lord, give me wisdom of heart to live my life better.
Lord, help us understand the
meaning of life

Acts
27.21-37: Paul then spoke to everyone: Don't despair.
There will be no loss of life. Last night an angel of God said to me:
"Do not be afraid, Paul. You are destined to go to Rome. Therefore
God grants you the safety of all who are sailing with you". On the 14th day, Paul took some bread, gave
thanks to God in front of them all, broke it and gave it to everyone
to eat. This gave them courage. There were 276 of them on the ship.
Jesus, thank you for the courage that
Communion gives us
Listen

John
5. 17-30: Jesus said to the religious leaders "My
Father goes on working, and so do I. Whoever
refuses honor to the Son, refuses honor to the Father who sent him. The Father judges no one. He has entrusted all
judgement to the Son. A time will come when the dead will
leave their graves at the sound of the Son's voice. Those who did good,
will rise again to life. Those who did evil, will face condemnation".
Jesus, some day you are going to be my judge.
On that day may I hear you say "I was hungry, and you gave me food
etc" (Matthew 25. 31 - 46)
Listen
Reflection on the above readings: Many Bible scholars say that today's reading from Acts describes a Eucharistic service ... i.e. Paul gave First Communion to 274 people who were not baptised! Special circumstances call for special practices!

Thanks largely to the sale of shirts
donated by actor Dicky Cheung, our 2nd hand shop at 191Temple Street in
Jordan had another big day yesterday: total sales of $3943. God bless all
donors of items, all volunteers/staff and all customers! August report - here
- shows we have quite a bit in the bank, but we are using about $100,000 per
month to rent rooms for homeless people. Current "score" is
"22/36" ... 22 rooms for 36 people.
One of the saddest conflicts in today's world is the civil war in
YEMEN where 13 million people face starvation from famine caused by the war.
According to Wikipedia,
the conflict is a proxy-war between Saudi
Arabia (with weaponry from the US, the UK and Australia) and Iran
(with weaponry from Russia and North Korea) following religious lines: Saudi Arabia being Sunni
Islam, Iran being Shi'i Islam. Pope
Francis is asking urgent prayers for Yemen. Let's pray each day
this week for peace in Yemen!

Isaiah
51-52: Pay
attention to me, you peoples. Listen to me, you nations. The islands put their
hope in the Lord. They put their trust in his strength. How beautiful on the
mountains are the feet of one who brings good news, who proclaims peace and
salvation, and tells Zion "Your God is king!" Break into shouts of
joy, you ruins of Jerusalem, for the Lord is redeeming his people. All
the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.
Lord, may more and more people in more and more countries know you and love you.
My
recording of this reading

Psalm
138: I thank you, Lord,
with all my heart. You have heard the words of my mouth. With the angels I will
bless you. I will adore you in your holy temple. I thank you for your
faithfulness and love which are far above what we can understand. On the day I
called you answered. You increased the strength of my soul. All earth's kings
shall thank you when they hear the words of your mouth. They shall sing of the
Lord's ways: "How great is the glory of the Lord!" Though
I walk in the midst of affliction you give me life and frustrate my foes.
Your love, O Lord, is eternal. Do not abandon us whom you have made.

Romans
10-11: If your lips confess
that Jesus is Lord, and if you believe in your heart that God raised him from
the dead, then you will be saved. How wonderful is God! How great his

infinite Creator? All that exists comes
from him. To him be glory for ever!
Jesus, Father, Spirit - three persons, one God - to you be glory for

Matthew
16.13-20: One day Jesus asked his
disciples "Who do people say the Son of Man is?" The disciples replied
"Some people say you are one of the famous prophets". Jesus then asked
them "And what about you. Who do you say
I am?" Peter answered "You are the Christ, the Son of the living
God". Jesus then said to Peter "Blessed are you, for my Father in
heaven has revealed this to you. So I now say to you: you
are Peter ('the rock') and on this rock I will build my church. I will
give you the keys of the kingdom."
Jesus, Son of God, please help the church to continue your work on earth

2 Kings 1:
Ahaziah, king of Israel, was seriously ill
after a fall.
He tried to send messengers to the temple of a false god
to ask about his future. But the Lord sent Elijah the prophet to
intercept the messengers
and tell them that the king would die. The king sent 50 soldiers to arrest Elijah
but as they approached Elijah, fire from heaven destroyed them. The king sent another 50 soldiers.
They too were destroyed by fire from heaven. A third group of 50 was sent.
They begged
Elijah to spare them.
The Lord told Elijah to go with them to the king. Elijah then told the king to his face that he
would soon die
because he had tried to ask a false god about his future.
Not long after this, Ahaziah died.
Dear Lord, please don't let us
ever get involved
with false religion
My
recording of this reading

Psalms
35-37: O Lord, please save me from people who slander
me,
you who rescue the weak from the strong, you whose love is so precious,
you in whose light we see light. We believe that if we find our delight in you,
you will grant our heart's desire. And so we commit our lives to you,
confident you will help us in time of trouble.
Lord, please deepen our trust
in you,
especially in time of trouble

Acts
27.9-20:
Navigation at that time of the year was
dangerous, since winter was starting. But the ship's captain set sail
hoping to reach Phoenix, a harbor in Crete. Suddenly a fierce storm began and the ship
could not be turned head-on to the wind. We had to let ourselves be driven
by the wind. The ship was badly damaged by the storm. On
the second day, the cargo was dumped overboard. For several days both sun stars were invisible
as the storm raged. We lost all
hope of surviving

John
5. 1-14: Jesus again went up to Jerusalem for a Jewish
festival. In a building near the Sheep Gate, he saw many sick people.
One paralyzed man had been ill for 38 years. Jesus
said to him "Do you want to be well again?
Get up, pick up your bed and walk".
The man was healed at once. He picked up his bed and walked away.
After a while Jesus met him in the Temple and said to him "Now that
you are well, do not sin any more"
Jesus, if my sickness is due to some sin,
please forgive me and heal me

Reflection on the above Bible readings: Today's Gospel records one of the very few times when Jesus linked sickness with sin. (Interesting: the letters "s i n" are contained in "sickness")

Yesterday two more rooms for homeless people were rented at the
Alhambra Building in Yau Ma Tei - one in the morning for an older man with
health issues, the other last night for a younger man with special difficulties.
The "date" now is "2135" ... 21 rooms for 35 people. God
bless the kind people whose donations enable this project of MercyHK. News last
night from Eddie Chan (C.E.O. of St Peter's Association and unofficial CEO of
the Temple Street project): yesterday he deposited $158,310 of recent donations
into the project bank account. That's enough to pay our Alhambra rent bills for
another 6 weeks. See our financial reports here.
With the help of income from our 2nd hand shop at 191 Temple Street we have
enough for about one year. But we're in for a long haul since Covid-19 is making
worse an already bad situation (from downturn following protests) ....
homelessness is rapidly increasing. You might ask what's the government doing
for homeless people? (... I just ran out of space....)
