Today
in Malaysia a woman from Kenya, Faith, is in court facing the death penalty for
taking drugs from Africa to Malaysia. I visited her a couple of years ago and
have been trying to use information from HK to help her legal team. Yesterday a
kind HK lawyer signed an affidavit I had prepared .... and I sent a PDF copy to
her legal team. Jesus, please help Faith today!

2 Kings
20: King Hezekiah became ill and was dying.
Hezekiah begged the Lord to cure him. The Lord told Isaiah the prophet to tell
Hezekiah:
"I will add 15 years to your
life." The king recovered and lived for another 15
years.
Dear God, please cure (..a sick

the way you cured Hezekiah

Psalm
50: Have mercy on me, God, in your kindness,
and cleanse me of my sin. My offences truly I know them.
What is evil in your sight I have done. But in my defence please don't forget that
sinfulness is part of the human condition, part of our DNA. A pure heart create for me, O God.
Put a steadfast spirit within me. Give me again the joy of your help.
With a spirit of fervor sustain me.
Lord, you will not spurn
a humbled, contrite heart

Romans
1.18-25:
Everyone needs the Good News, especially
people who put truth in prison. Ever since the world began, people could know
God by seeing the wonders of creation. But even though they saw the beauty of
creation, they refused to honor the Creator. They replaced honor for God with honor for
images of men and beasts.
They worshipped a god they made instead of God who made them
Jesus, may the beauty of creation help people
know you and your Father and the Holy Spirit

John
6.35-40:
Jesus said to the people "The bread of
God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world. I am the bread of
life. Anyone who comes to me
will never be hungry. Anyone who believes in me will never be thirsty. It is my Father's will that whoever believes
in me will have eternal life".
Jesus, living bread from heaven, please help
more and more people believe in you and love you

Yesterday, 4 more homeless men and a 72 year old homeless woman
moved into rooms at the Alhambra Building in Yau Ma Tei. The woman had been
sleeping in parks for several years. MercyHK is now renting 25 rooms for
44 people .... thanks to donations from many kind people and to our little 2nd
hand shop at 191 Temple Street where our sales record was broken yesterday:
$6769 ... helped greatly by the sale of items displayed on our

Yesterday I had a lunch meeting with a group of Kenyan women
waiting court cases after being badly treated by their agent and their
employers. Some of the women feature in this
report. HK local woman agent who deceived them was arrested but released on
bail ... and is now again deceiving others. Later in the afternoon the 4
homeless men above - all from India - all with HK ID cards - all chefs - told
how their employers cruelly dismissed them and left them stranded .... also
waiting courts cases but not allowed to work and no government help .... been
sleeping in a park.

2 Kings
19:
King Hezekiah asked the prophet Isaiah for
advice.
Isaiah said to the king:
"The Lord says 'Do not be afraid of the King of Assyria.
He shall not enter Jerusalem. I will protect this city and save
it.'" That same night the angel of the Lord struck
the Assyrian camp
with a type of plague which killed thousands of men. The Assyrians then went back to their own land
and did not attack Jerusalem.
Dear God, please protect

Psalms
49-50: I will turn my mind to a parable,
with the harp I will solve a problem. The problem is: why do bad people prosper and
succeed? The answer: at the end of their lives bad
people will have to face death and judgement, just like everyone else. When we are rich, we often lack wisdom.
Wealth blinds our minds and hearts. Let's not forgot God and his laws.
Let's try to be good and lead good lives

End of month ... so these days I have been spending (no pun
intended) much time at the Alhambra Building in Yau Ma Tei to pay rent for a
large number of rooms for the coming month. Latest "date" is
2338: that's 23 rooms for 38 homeless people. With 5 more people due to
join the club this afternoon. A few days ago I heard that one of the 38 lived at
HK airport for 20 years! As did many others for shorter times ... until
following protest activity, access to the airport was restricted to passengers

c.f. readings for Sunday 22
Jeremiah 18-20: Some
officials decided to get rid of Jeremiah. They did not want to listen to his
message any more. "Come on,", they said, "let us make a case
against him." Jeremiah prayed to God: "Lord, you know that people are
plotting against me. Please help me and keep me safe." One of the Temple
priests had Jeremiah beaten and put in
stocks for a day near the Temple. Again Jeremiah prayed to God: "You
have seduced me, Lord. You have told me to proclaim a harsh message for the
people. This has made me a laughing-stock. Being your messenger has caused me
insult all the day long. At one stage I even thought of not speaking your
message any more. But then I felt a fire
burning in my heart. I could not stop thinking of you. I just
had to speak your message."
Lord, please increase my love for you. Please give me more courage to
speak your message to my family, friends and people I meet
My
recording of this reading

Psalms
61-65: O God, hear my cry, you who are my
refuge and help. In you alone is my soul at rest. My help comes from you.
Take refuge in God, everyone in trouble. Trust him at all times. O God, you are
my God, for you I long. My body and soul thirst for you like a dry, weary land
without water. Your love is better than life, my
lips will speak your praise. On my bed I remember you. On you I muse
through the night. You are the Creator of the world. You care for the earth, you
give it water. To you our praise is due, wherever we are on earth.
Lord, my soul clings to you.
Your right hand holds me fast
Listen

Romans
12.1-2: I beg you, trust in
God's mercy, and worship him in a spiritual way, not just in an external way.
Offer your whole life to him as a holy sacrifice. Do not blindly follow the
fashions of the world. Instead, let your
behavior change, fashioned by your enlightened mind. This is the way to
discover the will of God, the way to know what God wants us to do.
Jesus, help me give more time to things that are important, less time to
things not so important
Listen

Matthew
16.21-28: Jesus now began explaining to
his disciples how he must go to Jerusalem to suffer, die and rise from the dead.
He also said "If you want to be my disciple, you must deny yourself,
take up your own cross, and follow me. Selfishness
will ruin your life. Self-sacrificing will bless your life. What use is
it to have everything in this world yet miss out on Heaven?"
Jesus, please help me find my life by losing it
in service of others
Listen

Reflection on the above readings:
Never once did Jesus say to a sick person "your illness is your cross ... go and carry it". Every time someone asked for healing, Jesus healed them or those for whom they asked healing. So what is our cross? Jeremiah gives the answer: it's ridicule, persecution for being a Christian ....for upholding Christian values ... like marriage (... just ask John the Baptist!)

6.17-29 For feast of
the Beheading of John the Baptist: Not
long after Jesus began traveling and teaching, King Herod arrested John the

she was a widow. When the Lord saw her, he felt sorry for her.
"Do not cry" he said. Then he said "Young man, I tell you

Jesus gave him to his mother. Everyone was filled with awe and praised God
saying "A great prophet has appeared among us. God has visited his

2 Kings 6: The king of Aram was at war with Israel.
But each time he planned an attack,
Elisha warned the king of Israel

Elisha prayed to God for help and the soldiers were temporarily

2 Kings 5:
Naaman was an army commander for the
king of Aram.
Naaman enjoyed success and favor, but he was a leper. He heard about Elisha and the king sent him to
Elisha
with gifts of gold, silver and garments to request healing. When Naaman reached Elisha's house,
Elisha sent him a message: "Bathe 7 times in the Jordan River." At first Naaman was angry at this message,
having expected Elisha to see and heal him personally. But then he humbly bathed 7 times in the
Jordan
and his flesh became clean once more.
Elisha declined Naaman's gifts.
But after Naaman left Elisha, Elisha's servant Gehazi

20,000 sat down on the grass. Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and gave them out to all
the people. He did the same with the fish. Everyone ate as much as they
wanted to. The people, seeing this miracle, said "He really is God's great
prophet". Jesus, aware that they wanted to make him
king, slipped away and went up the hill by himself
Jesus, please bless my prayers and actions to
help others,
just as you blessed the loaves and fish
