Today in Malaysia a woman from Kenya, Faith, is in court facing the death penalty for taking drugs from Africa to Malaysia. I visited her a couple of years ago and have been trying to use information from HK to help her legal team. Yesterday a kind HK lawyer signed an affidavit I had prepared .... and I sent a PDF copy to her legal team. Jesus, please help Faith today!

Man said to have disappeared/died during protest at MTR station now in UK!

Readings are from Simple Bible

2 Kings 20: King Hezekiah became ill and was dying. Hezekiah begged the Lord to cure him. The Lord told Isaiah the prophet to tell Hezekiah: "I will add 15 years to your life." The king recovered and lived for another 15 years.
Dear God, please cure (..a sick person..) the way you cured Hezekiah

My recording of this reading

Psalm 50: Have mercy on me, God, in your kindness, and cleanse me of my sin. My offences truly I know them. What is evil in your sight I have done. But in my defence please don't forget that sinfulness is part of the human condition, part of our DNA. A pure heart create for me, O God. Put a steadfast spirit within me. Give me again the joy of your help. With a spirit of fervor sustain me.
Lord,  you will not spurn a humbled, contrite heart

Listen

Romans 1.18-25: Everyone needs the Good News, especially people who put truth in prison. Ever since the world began, people could know God by seeing the wonders of creation. But even though they saw the beauty of creation, they refused to honor the Creator. They replaced honor for God with honor for images of men and beasts. They worshipped a god they made instead of God who made them
Jesus, may the beauty of creation help people know you and your Father and the Holy Spirit

Listen

John 6.35-40: Jesus said to the people "The bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world. I am the bread of life. Anyone who comes to me will never be hungry. Anyone who believes in me will never be thirsty. It is my Father's will that whoever believes in me will have eternal life".
Jesus, living bread from heaven, please help more and more people believe in you and love you

Each night at 8pm the staff of our 2nd hand shop in Temple Street have a simple prayer before closing down for the night. Last night during the prayer I was a bit distracted when I looked down at the items in front of me: diapers for the elderly (2nd hand but not used, if that makes sense). Wonder how long before I need them?!

Mon Aug 31

Yesterday, 4 more homeless men and a 72 year old homeless woman moved into rooms at the Alhambra Building in Yau Ma Tei. The woman had been sleeping in parks for several years. MercyHK  is now renting 25 rooms for 44 people .... thanks to donations from many kind people and to our little 2nd hand shop at 191 Temple Street where our sales record was broken yesterday: $6769 ... helped greatly by the sale of items displayed on our Carousell

Yesterday I had a lunch meeting with a group of Kenyan women waiting court cases after being badly treated  by their agent and their employers. Some of the women feature in this report. HK local woman agent who deceived them was arrested but released on bail ... and is now again deceiving others. Later in the afternoon the 4 homeless men above - all from India - all with HK ID cards - all chefs - told how their employers cruelly dismissed them and left them stranded .... also waiting courts cases but not allowed to work and no government help .... been sleeping in a park.

2 Kings 19: King Hezekiah asked the prophet Isaiah for advice. Isaiah said to the king: "The Lord says 'Do not be afraid of the King of Assyria. He shall not enter Jerusalem. I will protect this city and save it.'" That same night the angel of the Lord struck the Assyrian camp with a type of plague which killed thousands of men. The Assyrians then went back to their own land and did not attack Jerusalem.
Dear God, please protect ....... (the city where I am living now)

My recording of this reading

Psalms 49-50: I will turn my mind to a parable, with the harp I will solve a problem. The problem is: why do bad people prosper and succeed? The answer: at the end of their lives bad people will have to face death and judgement, just like everyone else. When we are rich, we often lack wisdom. Wealth blinds our minds and hearts. Let's not forgot God and his laws. Let's try to be good and lead good lives
Lord, please help me understand the meaning of life

Listen

Romans 1.8-16: I thank God for the way people everywhere speak of your faith. I never fail to mention you in my prayers.
I pray for the opportunity to visit you if God wills. I long to see you to encourage you and to be encouraged by you. For I am not ashamed of the Good News. It is the power of God saving everyone who has faith, Jews first then everyone else

Jesus, help me to pray for others the way Paul prayed for others

Listen

John 6.26-29: Jesus said to the people "You have come looking for me because you had so much bread to eat. Do not give so much concern to physical food. Be more concerned about the spiritual food that lasts forever. This is the food I am offering you"
Jesus, please give us the food that lasts forever

Sun Aug 30

End of month ... so these days I have been spending (no pun intended) much time at the Alhambra Building in Yau Ma Tei to pay rent for a large number of rooms for the coming month. Latest "date" is 2338:  that's 23 rooms for 38 homeless people. With 5 more people due to join the club this afternoon. A few days ago I heard that one of the 38 lived at HK airport for 20 years! As did many others for shorter times ... until following protest activity, access to the airport was restricted to passengers and staff.

c.f. readings for Sunday 22
Jeremiah 18-20:
Some officials decided to get rid of Jeremiah. They did not want to listen to his message any more. "Come on,", they said, "let us make a case against him." Jeremiah prayed to God: "Lord, you know that people are plotting against me. Please help me and keep me safe." One of the Temple priests had Jeremiah beaten and put in stocks for a day near the Temple. Again Jeremiah prayed to God: "You have seduced me, Lord. You have told me to proclaim a harsh message for the people. This has made me a laughing-stock. Being your messenger has caused me insult  all the day long. At one stage I even thought of not speaking your message any more. But then I felt a fire burning in my heart. I could not stop thinking of you. I just had to speak your message."
Lord,  please increase my love for you. Please give me more courage to speak your message to my family, friends and people I meet

My recording of this reading

Psalms 61-65: O God, hear my cry, you who are my refuge and help. In you alone is my soul at rest. My help comes from you. Take refuge in God, everyone in trouble. Trust him at all times. O God, you are my God, for you I long. My body and soul thirst for you like a dry, weary land without water. Your love is better than life, my lips will speak your praise. On my bed I remember you. On you I muse through the night. You are the Creator of the world. You care for the earth, you give it water. To you our praise is due, wherever we are on earth.
Lord, my soul clings to you. Your right hand holds me fast

Listen

Romans 12.1-2: I beg you, trust in God's mercy, and worship him in a spiritual way, not just in an external way. Offer your whole life to him as a holy sacrifice. Do not blindly follow the fashions of the world. Instead, let your behavior change, fashioned by your enlightened mind. This is the way to discover the will of God, the way to know what God wants us to do.
Jesus, help me give more time to things that are important, less time to things not so important

 Listen

Matthew 16.21-28: Jesus now began explaining to his disciples how he must go to Jerusalem to suffer, die and rise from the dead. He also said "If you want to be my disciple, you must deny yourself, take up your own cross, and follow me. Selfishness will ruin your life. Self-sacrificing will bless your life. What use is it to have everything in this world yet miss out on Heaven?"
Jesus, please help me find my life by losing it in service of others

 Listen

 Reflection on the above readings:

Never once did Jesus say to a sick person "your illness is your cross ... go and carry it".  Every time someone asked for healing, Jesus healed them or those for whom they asked healing. So what is our cross? Jeremiah gives the answer: it's ridicule, persecution for being a Christian ....for upholding Christian values ... like marriage (... just ask John the Baptist!)

2 Kings 14-18: After the death of Elisha, kings continued to come to power and be assassinated in Judah and Israel. It was then that the king of Assyria invaded Israel and Judah. Hezekiah, king of Judah, a good man, prayed to God for help
Dear God, please save us in time of trial

My recording of this reading

Psalm 47-48: All peoples, clap your hands, cry to God with shouts of joy. For the Lord, our Creator, we must love and honor,
great king over all the earth. Especially in his holy city is the Lord worthy to be praised. Praise is fitting in Mount Sion, our earth's most sacred site. O God, as we pray in your temple, our hearts meditate on your love. May peoples and rulers everywhere acknowledge and love you as Creator of the Universe

Let all the peoples praise you, Lord. Let all the peoples praise you

Romans 1.1-7: From Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, who has been called to be an apostle, and specially chosen to preach the Good News. This news is about the Son of God who, according to the human nature he took, was a descendant of David. This news is about Jesus Christ our Lord who, by his resurrection from the dead, proved he was the Son of God. From him I received my mission to preach the obedience of faith to non-Jewish nations. You are one of these nations. You belong to Jesus Christ. To you who are God's beloved friends in Rome, may God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give grace and peace
Jesus, Son of God,  may all nations know and love you

Mark 6.17-29 For feast of the Beheading of John the Baptist: Not long after Jesus began traveling and teaching, King Herod arrested John the Baptist and put him in prison. This was because John had told Herod he was breaking the Law by living with Herodias,  his brother's wife. During a birthday party for Herod, the daughter of Herodias danced. Her dancing so pleased Herod that he said he would give her anything she wanted. Herodias told her to ask for the head of John the Baptist on a dish. Herod then had John beheaded.

Yesterday at the monthly lunch gathering for formerly homeless people now living at the Alhambra Building in Yau Ma Tei, there were some special guests: Fr Jojo (who again sponsored the meal), Ying from the Salvation Army and Man from Eden. Both Ying and Man are registered social workers. They spoke and took questions re how the homeless can apply for government help despite setbacks and they, together with Fr Jojo, visited a number of people in their rooms to hear their stories in more detail. The two social workers will continue to visit people at Alhambra next week  - thank you Jesus!

2 Kings 7-13: During Elisha's life time, there were many kings in Israel and Judah. A number of these kings were assassinated. Elisha also died and was buried in a tomb. Once when a dead man was put in Elisha's tomb, the man came back to life

Psalm 46: (c.f. famous hymn by Martin Luther "A Mighty Fortress is our God",  and also the hymn "Be Still and Know that I am God")
God is for us a refuge and strength, in time of distress he is a helper close at hand. Therefore we shall not fear even though the earth should rock, even though the mountains fall into the sea. The Lord of hosts is with us. The God of Jacob is our stronghold. Come and consider the works of the Lord and always remember his words: "Be still and know that I am God".

Lord, help us to be more aware of your presence, especially when we are in trouble

Acts 28.17-31: Not long after his arrival in Rome, Paul had a meeting with a large number of Jews. The meeting went from early morning until evening. Paul talked to them about the kingdom of God. He tried to help them believe in Jesus. Some accepted Jesus. Paul was in detention for two years, in his own rented house. He welcomed everyone who came to visit him.  With boldness and without hindrance, he taught people about the Lord Jesus Christ.
Jesus, thank you for the Acts of the Apostles. May I help more people know and love you, like Paul

Listen

Luke 7.11-17 (for Feast of St. Augustine)Jesus and his disciples went to a town called Nain.  Many other people went with them. As they reached the town, a dead man was being carried out for burial, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. When the Lord saw her, he felt sorry for her. "Do not cry" he said. Then he said "Young man, I tell you to get up". The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him to his mother. Everyone was filled with awe and praised God saying "A great prophet has appeared among us. God has visited his people"
Jesus, please give me the faith to pray that dead people will come back to life - you who once told your disciples "to raise the dead"

It's now becoming "dangerous" (in a good sense) for me to go outside. Most times when I walk anywhere in the local area I come across homeless people .... who need to be taken to the Alhambra Building for a room rented in the name of MercyHK...then a visit to our 2nd hand shop for free clothing....and sometimes to nearby phone shop to buy a $240Nokia with sim card. See UCAN update report (script in Chinese, photos in Everyoneese) about the work of MercyHK for the homeless - here

2 Kings 6The king of Aram was at war with Israel. But each time he planned an attack, Elisha warned the king of Israel and the attack was foiled. The king of Aram therefore sent soldiers to capture Elisha. Elisha prayed to God for help and the soldiers were temporarily blinded. While they were blinded, Elisha led them to the king of Israel. The king of Israel asked Elisha "Shall I kill them?" Elisha told him not to kill them but to feed them and let them go. After this there was peace for a time between Aram and Israel.
Dear God, please bless our enemies, and help us be kind to them

Psalms 42-45: Like a deer that longs for running streams, so my soul is longing for you, my God. My soul is thirsting for you, the God of my life. I think of you all the time, here in my land of exile. People make fun of us here in exile. They taunt us saying "Where is your God?" Yet no matter what happens we will hope in you, for you are our saviour and our God. No matter where we are or what happens to us, our hearts will long for you, like a bride longing for her groom.
Lord, no matter what happens, may I always hope in you

Acts 28.11-16: After three months we set sail in a ship going to Italy. Our trip took us to Syracuse, Rhegium and Puteoli before we arrived in Rome. Believers in Rome heard of Paul's arrival and came to meet us. When Paul saw them, he thanked God with all his heart. Paul was allowed to stay in lodgings of his own, with a soldier to guard him

Rome safely. Thank you for protecting me on all my journeys

John 6.16-21: That evening, the disciples got into a boat to cross the sea to Capernaum. The wind became strong and the sea became rough. They had rowed about 4km when they saw Jesus walking on the sea, coming towards them. They were frightened, but he said "It is I. Do not be afraid". He got into the boat, and it quickly arrived at Capernaum
Jesus, help me remember that you are in my boat

2 Kings 5: Naaman was an army commander for the king of Aram. Naaman enjoyed success and favor, but he was a leper. He heard about Elisha and the king sent him to Elisha with  gifts of gold, silver and garments to request healing. When Naaman reached Elisha's house, Elisha sent him a message: "Bathe 7 times in the Jordan River." At first Naaman was angry at this message, having expected Elisha to see and heal him personally. But then he humbly bathed 7 times in the Jordan and his flesh became clean once more. Elisha declined Naaman's gifts. But after Naaman left Elisha, Elisha's servant Gehazi caught up with Naaman and deceitfully obtained some silver. Elisha confronted Gehazi about this and Gehazi became a leper.
Dear God, please heal everyone who has leprosy

Psalm 41: Blessed the person who helps the poor and the weak. He himself will be helped by the Lord when he is sick and in trouble. The Lord will help him on his bed of pain. The Lord will bring him back from sickness to health.

Acts 28.1-10: We were on the island of Malta. The local people were really kind to us. They made us welcome. They lit a huge fire because the weather was cold and rain was falling. Paul collected a bundle of sticks and was putting them on the fire, when a snake bit his hand and held on. The locals expected him to die. But he just shook the snake into the fire. He was ok. The local Roman governor kindly gave us hospitality for three days. The governor's father was very sick in bed with fever and dysentery. He was healed when Paul prayed for him with the laying on of hands. Word of the healing got around fast, and soon everyone on the island who was sick, came and got healed
Jesus, please bless the people of Malta

Listen

John 6.1-15: Near the Sea of Galilee, a large crowd followed Jesus, attracted by the way he healed so many sick people. Jesus climbed a hillside and sat there with his disciples. Seeing the huge crowd, Jesus said to one of his disciples  "How can we feed so many people?" The disciple Andrew said "There's a young boy here with 5 loaves and 2 fish. But what good is that for such a huge crowd?" Jesus said "Make the people sit down". The crowd of about 20,000 sat down on the grass. Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and gave them out to all the people. He did the same with the fish. Everyone ate as much as they wanted to. The people, seeing this miracle, said "He really is God's great prophet". Jesus, aware that they wanted to make him king, slipped away and went up the hill by himself
Jesus, please bless my prayers and actions to help others, just as you blessed the loaves and fish
