New! A second Carousell shop selling 2nd hand items donated to MercyHK to help homeless people. Second shop is here. First shop is here. And 191 Temple Street shop is here! God bless the kind people running all 3 shops! And ... yesterday afternoon a kind volunteer joined me for a long visit to the Alhambra Building where MercyHK is renting 24 rooms for 40 homeless people .... during which video interviews were made with a number of people ... with a view to lobbying the HK govt to do more for homeless people.

For Feast of Birthday of Mary

Micah 5.1-4: The Lord says this: But you, Bethlehem, the least of the clans of Judah, out of you will be born for me, the one who is to rule over Israel. His origin goes back to the distant past, to the days of old. The Lord's help will be on hold until the time when she who is to give birth, gives birth. He will stand and feed his flock with the power of the Lord, with the majesty of the name of his God. He himself will be peace.
Listen

Psalm 12: Lord, I trust in your merciful love. Let my heart rejoice in your saving help. Let me sing to the Lord for his goodness to me, sing psalms to the name of the Lord, the Most High.
Listen

Romans 8.28-30: We know that by turning everything to their good, God co-operates with all those who love him, with all those he has called according to his purpose. They are the ones he chose specially long ago and intended to become true images of his Son, so that his Son might be the eldest of many brothers and sisters. He called those he intended for this; those he called, he justified, and with those he justified, he shared his glory.
Listen

Matthew 1.18-25: This is how Jesus came to be born. His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph. But before they lived together, Mary became pregnant by the power of the Holy Spirit. An angel  appeared to Joseph in a dream and said "Joseph, descendant of David, do not be afraid to live with Mary as your wife". Her baby has been conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son. You must name him 'Jesus' ('God saves') because he will save his people from their sins." Joseph  took Mary to his home as his wife. She gave birth to a son, Jesus
Dear Jesus, Son of God, son of Mary, step-son of Joseph, please help me understand how you are the Saviour of the world
 Listen

Reflection on the above Bible readings:

If it's Mary's birthday, how come the readings are all about Jesus' birth?! Because Mary is the moon, Jesus is the sun .... all of Mary's light/importance comes from Jesus and reflects Jesus' light/importance. Honoring Mary is a very ancient and very special way of honoring Jesus. Just like in any place/culture we give honor to a person by honoring their parents

As I sat at my PC yesterday afternoon I could hear this happening in Nanking Street just near my home: Arrests in Jordan ... so I phoned our nearby MercyHK shop in Temple Street to be ready to lower the iron shutter (... but this wasn't necessary ...). Longer video & many photos here (Circle K shop, in one photo, is at corner of Temple St and Nanking St, 40 metres from my home, 60 metres from MercyHK shop)

Ezra 5-6: The prophets Haggai and Zechariah encouraged the people in the rebuilding of the temple. Despite opposition, the Jews kept on rebuilding the temple.
Dear God, when anyone tries to stop us from doing good, please give us courage to keep going

My recording of this reading

Psalm 71: In you, O Lord, I take refuge. Please hear me and help me. Be a rock where I can take refuge. Rescue me from people who want to hurt me. It is you, O Lord, who are my hope. In you I have trusted since I was young. From my mother's womb you have been my help. My hope has always been in you. Now that I am old, please do not forget me. Now that my strength fails, do not abandon me. Now that I am old and grey-headed, may I continue to trust in you and proclaim your help. To you I will sing with the harp. All day long my tongue will tell of your goodness to me.
Lord, may all elderly people put their trust and hope in you

Listen

Romans 5.1-5: By faith and through Jesus we can live in the friendship of God. We look forward to heaven and an end to all suffering. In the meantime our suffering teaches us patience. Patience produces perseverance. Perseverance produces hope. This hope is not imaginary. It's real, since the love of God has been poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit who has been given to us
Jesus, through your Holy Spirit, please give me more hope

Listen

John 7.37-39: During the Feast of Tabernacles in Jerusalem, Jesus called out loudly  in the Temple "If anyone is thirsty, come to me. Anyone who believes in me, come and drink!" As Scripture says "From his heart will flow fountains of living water". Jesus was speaking of the Holy Spirit, which people who believed in him were to receive. The Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet been glorified
Holy Spirit, flowing from the heart of Jesus, please increase your influence in my life

c.f. readings for Sunday 23
Ezekiel 33-34:
God told Ezekiel to say this to Israel's leaders: "Punishment is coming for you shepherds who have fed yourselves but not looked after the sheep. You have failed to make the weak sheep strong, or to care for the sick ones. You have failed to bring back stray sheep or look for lost sheep. On the contrary, you have been cruel to the sheep and treated them badly. Therefore I will look after my flock myself. I will rescue them from where they have been scattered. I will look for the lost one, bring back the stray, bandage the injured, and make the weak strong. I will also judge the sheep themselves. I will judge the fat sheep which have bullied the weak sheep. I will raise up a special shepherd and put him in charge of all my sheep."
Lord, please help all leaders care for their people, like Jesus the Good Shepherd

My recording of this reading

Psalm 95: Come ring out our joy to the Lord. Hail the rock who saves us. Let us come before him giving thanks. With songs let us praise the Lord. A mighty God is the Lord, a great king above all gods. In his hand are the depths of the earth. The heights of the mountains are his. To him belongs the sea, for he made it, and the dry land shaped by his hands. Come in, let us bow and bend low. Let us kneel before the God who made us. For he is our God and we are the people who belong to his pasture.
Lord, you are our Creator. Our life comes from you. We praise and love you, Lord

Listen

Romans 13.8-9: Avoid getting into debt, except the debt of love we owe each other. Love other people as you should, and you will keep all the commandments. All the commandments concerning other people - You shall not commit adultery, you shall not kill, you shall not steal etc - are summed up in the words "You must care about your neighbor as much as you care about yourself"
Jesus, help me care about others as much as I care about myself

 Listen

Matthew 18.15-20:

Jesus said to his disciples: "If your brother does something wrong, go and have it out with him alone, between your two selves. If he listens to you, you have won back your brother. If he does not listen, take one or two others along with you: the evidence of two or three witnesses is required to sustain any charge. But if he refuses to listen to these, report it to the community; and if he refuses to listen to the community, treat him like a pagan or a tax collector.  I tell you solemnly, whatever you bind on earth shall be considered bound in heaven; whatever you loose on earth shall be considered loosed in heaven. I tell you solemnly once again, if two of you on earth agree to ask anything at all, it will be granted to you by my Father in heaven. For where two or three meet in my name, I shall be there with them."

Ezra 4: Having returned from exile, the Jews started to rebuild their temple in Jerusalem. But some enemies of Israel tried to frighten and dishearten the Jews from rebuilding the temple
Dear God, when anyone tries to stop us from doing good, please give us courage to keep going
My recording of this reading

Psalms 69-70: Save me, O God, for the waters have risen to my neck. I am sinking fast and can't keep afloat much longer. So many people hate me without cause. I have no more strength to resist them. May my situation not cause anyone to lose faith in you. May people realize that it is for your sake that I am taunted. Taunts have broken my heart. No one shows me any compassion. For food they give me poison. In my thirst they give me vinegar to drink. Lord, do not hide your face from your servant. Answer quickly for I am in distress. You are my rescuer, my help, O God. O Lord, do not delay to help me.
O God come to our assistance. Lord make haste to help us

Listen

Romans 4.1-25: Remember our ancestor Abraham. He put his faith in God, and this was how he became holy. We too must put our faith in God the Father who raised Jesus from the dead to make us holy.
Jesus, please increase my faith. Help me believe like Abraham

Listen

John 7.1-13: Jesus now stayed in Galilee. He could not stay in Judea because the religious leaders wanted to kill him. Not even his brothers believed in him. In Jerusalem, no one spoke about him openly, for fear of the religious leaders
Jesus, people were scared to talk about you, your brothers didn't believe in you, and the leaders wanted to kill you. How small my  problems are compared with yours

Fri Sep 4

I spent most of yesterday with a team of social workers (including a nurse) from the local Salvation Army centre ... visiting many of the 43 homeless people for whom MercyHK is now renting 25 rooms in the Alhambra building in Yau Ma Tei. A most worthwhile day which has produced a specific plan/policy: in future when homeless people ask me for a room .... yes, go ahead and give them a room in Alhambra ... for a one week trial ... during which they need to contact the SA social workers for an appointment to check on their status re eligibility for govt housing/funding/health care etc. Then, with all-clear from SA, keep paying rent for them as long as necessary... with SA continuing to monitor their (usually very complicated) situation .... thus stopping a very tiny handful of people from abusing kindness of MercyHK ... and helping the vast majority who have given up trying to get govt help.

Ezra 2-3: About 50,000 Jews returned to Israel after 70 years of exile in Babylon. The returnees gathered in Jerusalem for worship. They were overcome with joy.
Dear God, please help all exiles return to their homeland

My recording of this reading

Psalms 66-68: O God, be gracious and bless us and let your face shine its light upon us. Let all the peoples praise you, O God.
Let all the peoples praise you. O sing to the Lord, make music to his name. Rejoice in the Lord, exult at his presence. Father of the orphan, defender of the widow, God provides a shelter for the homeless. God gives his people strength.

May all the peoples of the earth know you and praise you, O God

Listen

Romans 3.20-24: Only by faith in Jesus can we really become holy in God's sight. This faith is a free gift of God's grace to us. Only when Jesus is in our hearts, can our hearts become holy in God's sight.
Jesus, please live in my heart! May you live in me, and I in you

Listen

John 6.59-69: After hearing what Jesus said about his flesh and blood, many of his disciples said "How can anyone believe in such crazy ideas?"  Many disciples then stopped following Jesus. Jesus said to the 12 apostles "What about you? Are you also going to leave me?" Peter replied "Lord, who shall we go to? You have the message of eternal life. We believe you are the Holy One of God"
Jesus, please don't ever let me stop following you

Listen

Reflection on the above Bible readings: Why didn't Jesus tell the crowd - including his disciples - that eating his body and drinking his blood would be done by way of bread and wine? Why did he leave them thinking of "cannibalism"? This seems to be a question for which there is no clear answer among Bible scholars. A question that will be answered only in Heaven?

Dear Holy Spirit, please fall afresh on all students/teachers/staff/parents for the start of school year this week!

I'm not sure what to say. The August financial report for MercyHK's project to help homeless people is here. Check the total donations. Check the amount used for renting rooms for the homeless (currently 25 rooms for 44 people who would otherwise be sleeping in parks or at McDonald's). Check the total sales of our little second hand shop at 191 Temple Street - $63,000 for August! (... at a time of economic downturn, with other businesses in Temple Street running at a loss or even closing down). Check the amount now in bank. Mind-blowing. So much to be grateful for. God bless all kind donors of money and goods, all volunteers and staff who run the shop, all who have bought items from the shop, all our homeless guests ....and our kind finance team (Eddie and Monica) for their dedicated work.

Ezra 1After the Jewish people had been in Babylon about 70 years, the Lord moved the heart of the king of Persia to free the Jews. The king also told the Jews to re-build their temple in Jerusalem.
Dear Lord, please give freedom to all the peoples of the world

Psalms 61-65: O God, hear my cry, you who are my refuge and help. In you alone is my soul at rest. My help comes from you. Take refuge in God, everyone in trouble. Trust him at all times. O God, you are my God, for you I long. My body and soul thirst for you like a dry, weary land without water. Your love is better than life, my lips will speak your praise. On my bed I remember you. On you I muse through the night. You are the Creator of the world. You care for the earth, you give it water. To you our praise is due, wherever we are on earth.
Lord, my soul clings to you. Your right hand holds me fast

Recording

Romans 2.13-29: People become holy in God's sight by doing what is right. Listening to God's Law is not enough. We have to put it into practice in our lives. Non-Jewish people who follow a good conscience and do what is right, have God's Law engraved on their hearts. What matters is not circumcision of the body, but circumcision of the heart. The real Jew is one who is a Jew in his heart
Jesus, help me to love you with all my heart. May my love for you not be just something external, but something real, in my heart

Listen

John 6.52-58: The people said among themselves  "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?" Jesus replied "If you refuse to eat my flesh, and drink my blood, you will not have life in you. Anyone who does eat my flesh and drink my blood has eternal life. For my flesh is real food, and my blood is real drink. Anyone who eats my flesh and drinks my blood lives in me, and I live in them. As I, who am sent by the living Father, myself draw life from the Father, so whoever eats me will draw life from me. This is the bread come down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will live for ever"
Jesus, thank you for the gift of your Body and Blood in Holy Communion

2 Kings 21-25: Josiah king of Judah was a good leader who loved the Lord and promoted religious reform. But most other kings of Judah and Israel at this time were not good. The country was invaded by the king of Babylon who deported most of the population to Babylon. Only the poorest people in the countryside were left behind.
Dear God,  please give the world good leaders

My recording of this reading

Psalms 52-60: Lord, I will tell everyone about how good you are. You are our Creator. Everyone should love you. Thank you for so often rescuing me from trouble. You uphold my life. Sometimes I have so many troubles and cares that I can't get to sleep. Sometimes I wish I was a bird and could fly away to a safe place. When I fear, I will trust in you, in you whose word I praise. My heart is ready, O God, my heart is ready. I will sing, I will sing your praise. Each morning I will sing of your strength, and each morning acclaim your love.

Romans 1.26-32: Refusing to honor the Creator is why people's behaviour went bad: why women turned from natural intercourse to unnatural practices, and why men gave up natural intercourse to be consumed with passion for each other, men doing shameless things with men, and getting an appropriate reward for their perversion. Since people refused to honor God, they have dishonored themselves

John 6.42-51: The people criticized  Jesus saying "We know his father and mother. How can he say he has come down from heaven?" Jesus replied "I am the bread of life. And the bread that I will give is my flesh, for the life of the world".
