Short video interviews in Cantonese here with some of the 38 homeless people for whom MercyHK is providing accommodation at the Alhambra Building in Yau Ma Tei. Aim of videos is to lobby government to address the issue of homelessness in annual Policy Address to be published next month. Many thanks to Emily (MercyHK volunteer) and film maker Kenneth Bi for their dedicated work to produce these videos.

Life inside HK prisons (basically correct, but a few errors: e.g. young offenders are under 21, not 25; only men are sent to Lai Chi Kok, not "all offenders"; sketch of day room is not accurate; "hard labour" does not exist!

Readings for Feast of Mary of Sorrows
Hebrews 5.7-9:
During his life on earth, Christ offered up prayer and entreaty, aloud and in silent tears, to the one who had the power to save him out of death, and he submitted so humbly that his prayer was heard. Although he was Son, he learnt to obey through suffering; but having been made perfect, he became for all who obey him the source of eternal salvation.
My recording of this reading

Psalm 31: In you, O Lord, I take refuge. Let me never be put to shame. In your justice, set me free, hear me and speedily rescue me. Be a rock of refuge for me, a mighty stronghold to save me, for you are my rock, my stronghold. Into your hands I commend my spirit. It is you who will redeem me, Lord. I trust in you, Lord. You are my God. My life is in your hands, deliver me from the hands of those who hate me.

Recording

Luke 2.33-35: As the child's father and mother stood there wondering at the things that were being said about him, Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother: "You see this child: he is destined for the fall and for the rising of many in Israel, destined to be a sign that is rejected - and a sword will pierce your own soul too - so that the secret thoughts of many may be laid bare."
Recording

John 19.25-27: Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala. Seeing his mother and the disciple he loved standing near her, Jesus said to his mother, "Woman, this is your son".  Then to the disciple he said, "This is your mother". And from that moment the disciple made a place for her in his home

Reflection on the above Bible readings:

A traditional prayer on this day: The Stabat Mater which has the words:

O dear Mother, fount of love.
Touch my spirit from above,
make my heart with thine accord:

Make me feel as thou hast felt;
make my soul to glow and melt
with the love of Christ my Lord.

Mon Sep 14

Yesterday afternoon I was again at the Alhambra Building in Yau Ma Tei, where MercyHK is renting 25 rooms for about 40 homeless people. I was with Emily (a MercyHK volunteer) and Michael (MercyHK advisor) for the making of 6 more video interviews with homeless people .... with the aim of urging the HK govt to do more for the growing homeless population in HK. The final 2 interviews were with 2 men not long released from detention ....jobless, homeless and hungry .... for whom a room had just been made available at Alhambra. Followed by a cafe meal, followed by a visit to our shop at 191 Temple Street where the men obtained clothing and other items free. God bless all the volunteers, workers, donors and patrons who help the little shop to continue sailing smoothly and successfully.

Readings for Feast of The Cross
Numbers 21:
In order to avoid the land of Edom, the Israelites headed towards the coastline. But the people again criticized God and Moses. So God sent snakes among the people, and many people died. The people then said to Moses "We have sinned; please pray for us to save us". Moses prayed for them, and God heard his prayer. God told Moses to make a bronze snake and put it on a pole. Anyone bitten by a snake could then look at the bronze snake and live.
Jesus' words (John 3.13): "The Son of Man must be lifted up as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him".
Recording

Psalm 78b: May future generations not be like our ancestors who so often were unfaithful to God. Even though our ancestors had seen God part the sea, even though they had seen him provide food and water for them in the desert, still they went on sinning. Yet he who is full of compassion forgave and spared them. He remembered they were only weak humans. Eventually he brought them to the promised land and gave a home to each of Israel's tribes. But still they sinned by building mountain shrines and serving idols. Then God raised up David to be their leader. God called him from looking after sheep to be the shepherd of his people.
Lord, help us not to forget all you have done for us

Recording

Philippians 2.6-11: His state was divine, yet Christ Jesus did not cling to his equality with God, but emptied himself to assume the condition of a slave and became as humans are. And being as all humans are, he was humbler yet, even to accepting death, death on a cross. But God raised him high, and gave him the name which is above all other names, so that all beings in the heavens, on earth and in the underworld, should bend the knee at the name of Jesus, and that every tongue should acclaim Jesus Christ as Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Recording (song: The Philippians Hymn)

John 3.13-17: Jesus said to Nicodemus: "No one has gone up to heaven except the one who came down from heaven, the Son of Man who is in heaven; and the Son of Man must be lifted up, as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him". Yes, God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not be lost but may have eternal life. For God sent his Son into the world not to condemn the world, but so that through him the world might be saved.
Jesus, only Son of God the Father, thank you for coming into this world. Please help more and more people believe in you

Reflection on the above Bible readings:

For today's Feast of The Cross, a beautiful poem: Retreat by James McAuley

Soon you must return to tasks
That sicken and appall:
The calumnies will never cease,
Look only to the sign of peace,
The Cross upon the wall.

This is that sole instrument
That measures every chart;
This square and level overrules
The subtle calculus of fools
By a celestial art.

c.f. readings for Sunday 24

Sirach 25-28: Happy the husband of a really good wife. A good wife is the joy of her husband. Do not praise a person before they have spoken. A person's speech reveals what sort of person is speaking. Among stupid people look for an opportunity to leave, but among thoughtful people take your time. Sarcasm and abuse are the mark of an arrogant person. Resentment and anger are bad for everyone. Forgive others if they have offended you. Then when you pray, your own sins will be forgiven. Avoid quarrelling and losing your temper. Do not let your mouth speak scandal.
Lord, please give me the wisdom to control my speech

My recording of this reading

Psalm 103: My soul, give thanks to the Lord. All my being, bless his holy name. My soul, give thanks to the Lord and never forget all his blessings. It is he who forgives all your guilt, who heals every one of your ills. It is he who fills your life with good things, renewing your youth like an eagle's life. The Lord is compassion and love, slow to anger and rich in mercy. As the heavens are high above the earth so strong is his love for those who love him. As far as the East is from the West, so far does he remove our sins. As a father has compassion on his children, the Lord has pity on all who love and honor him. Give thanks to the Lord, all his angels, who heed the voice of his word. Give thanks to the Lord, everyone and everything. My soul, give thanks to the Lord!
Thank you, Lord, for your love and compassion

Listen

Romans 14-15: The life and death of each of us, has its influence on others. If we live, we live for the Lord. If we die, we die for the Lord. Alive or dead, we belong to the Lord. Never pass judgment on other people. Never treat other people with contempt. The kingdom of God is not about eating special food. The kingdom of God is about friendship with God, and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. Do whatever you can to help other people become stronger Christians.
Jesus, please help me be a good Christian

 Listen

Matthew 18.21-35: Peter asked Jesus "How many times must I forgive someone? 7 times?"  Jesus answered "Not 7, but 77 times. For the kingdom of heaven is like a king who cancelled the huge debt of one of his servants. But that same servant refused to cancel the tiny debt of one of his fellow servants. So the king said to the servant: 'When you appealed to me, I had pity on you and cancelled your big debt.  But you refused to have pity on your fellow servant who asked you for mercy. Therefore you must now go to prison until your big debt is paid.' If you refuse to forgive other people, you are making yourself ineligible for God's forgiveness."
Jesus, please help me to forgive other people, just as you forgive me....many times each day

Nehemiah 5: The people were very  poor and could not pay their debts. Therefore Nehemiah cancelled all debts owed by poor people. Nehemiah was a just and kind leader. He even used his own money to pay his expenses, and never took the salary that he could have claimed
Dear God,  to reduce government corruption in all countries, please raise up more leaders like Nehemiah

My recording of this reading

Psalms 79-80: O God, the nations have invaded your sacred land, they have profaned your holy temple. They have made Jerusalem a heap of ruins. We have become the taunt of our neighbours, the mockery and scorn of those who surround us. How long, O Lord, will all this last? How long will this sorrow keep going? Do not hold the guilt of our ancestors against us.
If their guilt is somehow influencing our situation now please give peace and healing to everyone and everything in our  history. Let the groans of the prisoners come before you. Let your strong arm reprieve those condemned to die. O Lord, our God, help us and save us. Let your face shine on us and we shall be saved.

Lord, please heal any problems in my family tree

Romans 7.14-25: Even though I'm on God's team, I don't always play as well as I should. At times I cannot understand my behavior. I fail to do good things, and I find myself doing bad things. It's as if there is a battle going on inside me. In my heart I dearly love God, but my will is weak, and I do things that I know are wrong. Who can help me keep going? Who can fix up things in my life? Jesus can. He is the one who sorts out things in my life, and changes chaos into order, by the working of the Holy Spirit
Jesus, my life is in your hands. Please arrange my life the way you want to

John 8.42-58: Jesus said to the people "If God were your father, you would love me, since I have come from God and I speak the truth. You avoid the truth, because your father is the father of lies, the Devil. Abraham rejoiced at the thought of my coming. He saw it in the future and was glad". The people said "You are not yet 50 years old. How could you have seen Abraham?" Jesus replied "I tell you, before Abraham ever was, I Am". The people then picked up stones to throw at Jesus for claiming to be God. But Jesus safely left the Temple
Jesus, you who existed as God the Son from all eternity, please increase my love for the truth, and help me avoid lies

Yesterday morning I went to the Malaysian Consulate in Wanchai for the signing of an affidavit to help a Kenyan woman on death row in Malaysia. My previous affidavit, signed by a kind lawyer in HK, was not sufficient for the Malaysian court. Court needs Consulate signature. But Consulate pointed out that the woman's legal team in Malaysia had failed to provide a necessary document. So, home I went, emailed the team, got the document, printed it out, and went back to the Consulate in the afternoon ... where staff were most helpful and sympathetic re my situation. Am due to collect the re-signed affidavit today or Monday ... then need to PDF it and send it to Malaysia for when the trial continues on Sep 22. Faith phoned me on March 19, 2019 - recording is here. The letter which Faith refers to in the recording is here. Jesus, please help Faith!

Nehemiah 1-4: Nehemiah was cupbearer for the king of Persia. He heard how the Jews who had returned to Jerusalem were facing many difficulties. Nehemiah received permission from the king to go to Jerusalem and help rebuild the city. Nehemiah then supervised the re-building of Jerusalem's wall, even though some foreigners in Jerusalem made fun of him. When the workers were ridiculed by foreigners, Nehemiah said to the workers: "Do not be afraid of them. Just keep your mind on the Lord."
Dear God, please help us to do what is right, even if we meet ridicule and opposition

My recording of this reading

Psalm 78: Listen, everyone, to my teaching. I will recount the lessons of our history. The things our parents have told us, we will not hide from our children, but will pass them on to the next generation. We want the next generation to know all that the Lord has done for us in the past. May the next generation in turn pass on this knowledge to their own children, so that they too will put their hope in God and never forget all that God has done for us. May future generations not be like our ancestors who so often were unfaithful to God. Even though our ancestors had seen God part the sea, even though they had seen him provide food and water for them in the desert, still they went on sinning. But then I realize that everyone someday has to pay the bill for any evil they have bought in the world. Sometimes when I see our world and religion in ruins, I wonder why has God abandoned us? Then I remember that God has promised to break the power of the wicked. He has promised to give strength to good people. So may all people honor the Lord our God and judge. Romans 6.3-11: When we were baptized, two things happened: 1: We went into Jesus' tomb and joined him in death. We died.

John 8.1-11: While Jesus was teaching in the Temple, the religious leaders brought to him a women who had been caught committing adultery. The leaders said to Jesus "According to the Law of Moses, this woman should be stoned to death. What do you say?"  They said this to test him, looking for something to use against him. Jesus bent down and started writing on the ground with his finger. Since they kept up their questioning, he looked up and said to them "If there is one of you who has not sinned, let him be the first to cast a stone". Then he kept writing on the ground. The leaders went away, beginning with the eldest, until Jesus was left alone with the woman. Jesus said to her "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?"No one, sir", she replied. "Neither do I condemn you", said Jesus. "Go and don't sin any more"
Jesus, what did you write on the ground? The leaders' sins? "If you, O Lord, should write a record of our sins, who could claim innocence?"
